Hermetische Offenheit

Hermetic openess

  • Hermetic openness - Nietzsche's Thus spake Zarathustra as book for all and none. "A book for all and none" is the subtitle of Nietzsche's Thus spake Zarathustra. But what appears paradoxical actually points to the manifest structural dimension of a work, which is mostly studied for its rich narrative content. In reference to the subtitle, this research investigates in how far the structure, or form, of the text can be understood as philosophical content. The intention is demonstrate that the subtitle is not only a self-referential key to the understanding of the text, but that the structure furthermore conveys information independently of the content - information of a philosophical horizon of meaning that opens exactly because of the seeming methodological exception of the possibility of understanding. I intent to show that Zarathustra unfolds its philosophical content through the workings of its very own dynamic - and that the text effaces itself as the result of network of reference existing between various levels of the text, which I will investigate. I will show how this is accomplished, why the philosophical content of this dynamic is a structural demand on the text and how the subtitle functions as a code for the understanding of the text as well as a manipulating catalyst for the mentioned dynamic. This research will establish what so far only works as a premiss: that the dynamic of self-effacement, as well as the elimination of communicable singular truths in the course of the text, results in the dissolution of the supposed philosophical core elements, as the topos of the "Übermenschen" (superman), the will to power or the eternal recurrence. Thus we can no longer talk of the lesson, doctrine, or school of thought, of Thus spake Zarathustra. This investigation will show that the philosophical value and meaning of the text of Zarathustra lies less in its content but rather in the workings of its structure. In this way Zarathustra can be seen as a paradigm of a philosophy which has critically transcended the binary dichotomy of 'true' and 'false' of occidental epistemology.show moreshow less
