Er hat Geheimpapiere der US-Regierung veröffentlicht. Die betrachtet ihn als „Gefahr für die nationale Sicherheit“ und will ihn erledigen. Plötzlich wurde er sexueller Übergriffe auf zwei schwedische Frauen beschuldigt und in Schweden wurde Anklage erhoben. Daraufhin flüchtete Assange in die ecuadorianische Botschaft in London und bat um politisches Asyl. Britische Diplomaten erklärten, das britische Recht erlaube die Erstürmung der Botschaft zwecks Verhaftung Assanges; britische Medien dagegen betonten, dies wäre ein offener Bruch internationalen Rechts.

Daraus wurde abgeleitet, man müsse Soldaten nach Afghanistan schicken, um Entwicklungsperspektiven zu sichern. Dies wurde sodann abgewandelt: "Ohne Sicherheit keine Entwicklung". Mit dem Scheitern der Intervention im Land der Afghanen wurde daraus: "Ohne Entwicklung keine Sicherheit". Dies hat Auswirkungen auf die Entwicklungszusammenarbeit: Frieden als Ziel ist verschwunden, sie wird zur Funktion der "Sicherheit Deutschlands", die am Hindukusch verteidigt werden soll. Dafür wird passendes Personal gesucht.

At its core it oscillates between the Polish striving for power in the EU and the toleration for cultural difference in Europe. The opposite of the latter has been particularly significant during the referendum debates in France and the Netherlands, which let to the rejection of the constitutional treaty.
