Basisdaten zur Kartenerstellung und räumlichen Analyse ihrer Bevölkerungsdaten
an. Der folgende Bericht zeigt die Möglichkeiten und Einschränkung
der angebotenen räumlichen Daten für die Bevölkerungskartographie auf und
stellt die vorhandenen Verwaltungsgrenzdateien bis zur kleinsten Einheit, dem so
genannten ‚dissemination block‘, in ihrer Struktur vor. Die räumlich sehr ungleiche
Verteilung der Bevölkerung Kanadas stellt eine besondere Herausforderung bei
der kartographischen Visualisierung dar. Üblicherweise angewendete Methoden
wie die Choroplethen-Methode sind im Falle Kanadas streng genommen nur zur
Visualisierung kleinräumiger Bevölkerungsdichte geeignet. Um die Darstellung
der Bevölkerungsdichte und -verteilung auch für größere Raumeinheiten, z. B.
den so genannten ‚census divisions‘ oder die Provinzen, zu ermöglichen, veröffentlicht
Statistics Canada einen Datensatz, der die Abgrenzung der Ökumene,
also der bewohnten Fläche, des Landes veranschaulicht. Diese Datei ermöglicht
es dem Nutzer die Bevölkerungsdichte und -verteilung des Landes angemessen
und detailliert zu visualisieren.
N2  - Statistics Canada, Canada’s national statistics agency, offers a suite of spatial
files for mapping and analysis of its various population data products. The following
article showcases possibilities and shortfalls of the existing spatial files
for mapping population data, and provides an overview of the structure of the
available boundary files from the regional to the dissemination block level. Due
to Canada’s highly dispersed population, mapping its distribution and density can
be challenging. Common mapping techniques such as the choropleth method are
suitable only for mapping spatially high resolution data such as data at the dissemination
area level. To allow for mapping of population data at less detailed levels
such as census divisions or provinces, Statistics Canada has created a so-called
ecumene boundary file which outlines the inhabited area of Canada and can be
used to more accurately visualize Canada’s population distribution and density.

NUTS2-Gebieten der Europäischen Union verglichen. Es wird gezeigt, wie sich deutsche ländliche Gebiete im europäischen Rahmen positionieren. Die Analyseergebnisse werden durch Tabellen und Karten zur räumlichen Verteilung von Ressourcen veranschaulicht. Für die vier ländlichen Kreistypen in Deutschland werden Nachhaltigkeitsbilanzen zusammengefasst und mit europäischen ländlichen Raumtypen verglichen. Abschließend werden Überlegungen für raumspezifische Pfade der Regionalentwicklung für jeden analysierten ländlichen Kreistyp zur Diskussion gestellt. Die Autorinnen sind langjährige Mitarbeiterinnen der Forschungsgruppe "Umweltsoziologie" der Wirtschafts- und Sozialwissenschaftlichen Fakultät der Universität Potsdam.

N2  - “Why,” Francisca Isidro wonders, “did we have to leave our families and move so far away, only to come back as cooks, waitresses, sales assistants, and the like?” And she recalls: “We came back from our time in East Germany with professions that were not held in particu-larly high regard in Mozambique. Nobody understood why we didn’t return as engineers, doctors and teachers. ‘A waitress?,’ they would wonder. ‘Why, they could have become a waitress in Mozambique. Nobody needs to spend so many years in school for that.’”2And with that, Ms. Isidro puts her fi nger right on a misapprehension at the heart of an ambitious state-led education migration program that saw 900 Mozambican children attend the School of Friendship (Schule der Freundschaft  , SdF) in Staßfurt in the district of Magdeburg, in what today is Saxony-Anhalt, in the German Democratic Republic (GDR, or East Germany) from 1982 to 1988.3 Ms. Isidro returned to Mozambique as a trained salesperson for clothing, a profession she neither chose nor ever worked in again subsequently. Like her, these 900 children had to navigate the diverging values that particular environments bestowed upon knowledge. What they learned was interpreted diff  erently in their home communities, at the SdF, and in their German host families

N2  - Das in den USA bereits weit verbreitete Predictive Policing, die vorhersagende
Polizeiarbeit, entwickelt sich seit zwei bis drei Jahren auch auf dem deutschen
Sicherheitsmarkt sehr dynamisch. Unter Nutzung und Weiterentwicklung von
Geographischen Informationssystemen sowie raumbasierter Algorithmen und
Modellierungen werden für beliebige Orte die Auftrittswahrscheinlichkeiten von
Straftaten ermittelt. In der Praxis erhält damit die Polizei ortsbezogene Hinweise
für die strategische Planung ihrer Einsätze. Für die Humangeographie und die
Geoinformatik ist Predictive Policing also ein äußerst interessantes Beobachtungsund
Betätigungsfeld, das in diesem Beitrag unter die Lupe genommen werden soll.
Dabei wird es weniger um die GIS-technischen und mathematisch-statistischen
Hintergründe des Predictive Policing gehen. Vielmehr sollen einige Gedanken
geäußert werden, weshalb sich dieses Instrument auf dem Sicherheitsmarkt etablieren
konnte und über welche Potenziale und Grenzen des Predictive Policing
von Vertreter(inne)n aus Politik, Polizei, Kriminalsoziologie und Geographie diskutiert
wird.

verdient, weil geographische Namen dort wichtige Funktionen erfüllen.
Sie identifizieren zwar nicht ein geographisches Objekt, erleichtern aber das
Kartenlesen, ermöglichen die Suche nach geographischen Objekten, weisen auf
Merkmale geographischer Objekte hin und lassen die kulturelle Einbettung eines
Ortes erkennen. Für Leser, denen der Name und der durch ihn bezeichnete Ort
bekannt sind, haben sie die zusätzliche Funktion von Etiketten und die Eigenschaft,
emotionale Bindungen zum Ort zu unterstützen. Es werden zudem sechs allgemeine
Grundsätze für die Verwendung von geographischen Namen in Atlanten genannt, ferner spezielle Grundsätze für die beiden Haupttypen von Atlanten, nämlich
wissenschaftliche Atlanten, die sich an ein internationales Publikum wenden, und populäre Atlanten, die v. a. ein heimisches Publikum ansprechen wollen.
N2  - The use of geographical names on maps and in atlases is a neglected field in
cartographic methodology, but deserves attention because geographical names
have important functions there. They do not identify a geographical feature, but
facilitate map reading, allow the search for geographical features, point to their
characteristics and let the cultural embedding of a place seen. For readers, where
the name and the place designated by him are known, they have the additional
function of labels and the ability to support emotional ties to the place. There are
also six general principles for the use of geographical names in atlases highlighted,
further specific principles for the two main types of atlases, namely scientific
atlases that call for an international audience and popular atlases that want to
reach a domestic audience.

N2  - Die bisherigen Missionen ins Sonnensystem lieferten eine enorme Fülle an Daten in unterschiedlichen Formaten und in Form von Bildern und digitalen Messergebnissen. Die Oberflächenprozesse der planetaren Körper, die mit Hilfe dieser Daten erforscht werden können, sind äußerst vielfältig und reichen von Einschlagskratern über Vulkanismus und Tektonik zu allen Formen der Erosion und Sedimentation. Um diese Prozesse verstehen zu können werden Verfahren angewendet, die für die Datenanalyse auf der Erde entwickelt wurden. Allerdings ist es notwendig all diese Verfahren zum Teil mit erheblichem Aufwand und unter Berücksichtigung der jeweiligen physikalischen Rahmenbedingungen anzupassen. Die Entwicklung kartographischer Verfahren zur Abstraktion der hier angesprochenen Informationen, also die Erfassung, geomorphologische Analyse und Visualisierung planetarer Oberflächen und Prozesse, hat jedoch gerade erst begonnen. Um diese Entwicklungen voranzutreiben, hat das Deutsche Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt in Kooperation mit der Universität Potsdam (Institut für Geographie, Fachgruppe Geoinformatik, Prof. Dr. Asche), im Rahmen von Dissertationen und Forschungsvorhaben, in einem ersten Schritt kartographische Analyseverfahren für den Mars und die Asteroiden Ceres und Vesta entwickelt.
