N2  - Le centenaire de la publication du Cours de linguistique générale (1916) de Ferdinand de Saussure nous a invité à reconsidérer l’importance de cet ouvrage et le rôle de son auteur pour la fondation d’une linguistique intégrée dans une sémiologie. Il n’y a aucun doute que cet auteur fut extrêmement important pour le développement de la linguistique structurale en Europe et qu’avec son concept du signe linguistique il a fait œuvre de pionnier pour le tournant sémiologique. Mais l’accueil favorable d’une théorie dans le milieu scientifique ne s’explique pas seulement par sa qualité intérieure, mais par plusieurs conditions extérieures. Ces conditions seront analysées sur trois plans: (1) l’arrivée de la méthode des néogrammairiens à ses limites qui incitait alors à l’étude de l’unité du signifiant et du signifié; (2) la simplification et l’outrance de la pensée structurale dans le Cours, publié en 1916 par Charles Bally et Albert Sechehaye et (3) la préparation de la réception de la pensée sémiologique par plusieurs travaux parallèles.

N2  - The assumption of linguistics relativity and the definition of languages as epiphenomena are certainly known as two contradictory positions from the last century. But I will start my discussion of them in the period of their appearance and then use this as a basis to evaluate the heuristic value of these positions in present day linguistics. I will start with the definition of language as an epiphenomenon and then I will go on with the linguistic relativity.
The notion of ʽepiphenomenon’ is usually used to exclude certain aspects of a scientific object because they are considered to be deduced from others. In linguistics, restrictions of the research object were made, invoking the notion of ʽepiphenomenonʼ, which was partially done with a polemical attitude, and was always responded to polemically.

N2  - The term "analysis" came into use in Spanish school grammars during the first half of the nineteenth century. Following a process of simplification still evident today, the teaching of this concept in Spain distinguished between logical analysis and grammatical analysis, i.e. the separation or the division of sentences into clauses and of clauses into their immediate constituents and, on the other hand, the study of the parts of speech. A close perusal of various grammars, however, reveals that analysis is a concept used with different meanings, which minimises the distinction between logic and grammar. The term "analysis" includes elements of scholastic grammar and also aspects of the general grammar of the Port Royal School, which was introduced in Spain rather late, as well as ideological features associated with the impact of French ideas in Spain in the early nineteenth century. This paper shall explore the different concepts of "analysis" in Elementos de gramática c astellana by Juan Manuel Calleja, Análisis lógica y gramatical de la lengua espanola by Juan Calderón and Gramática de la lengua castellana destinada al uso de los americanos by Andrés Bello.

N2  - The use of the word functional in the most diverse theories and approaches has contributed in no small measure to the confusion in linguistics today. This article does not claim to give an overview of the different directions of functionalism in linguistics. Rather, the aim is to present what Coseriu‘s view characterised as functional in his time and to what extent his theory outlined a path that still makes sense in functional-cognitive linguistics today. This will involve an examination of Coseriu‘s difficult-to-identify concept of function. Furthermore, the article will also show that functional thinking is relevant for current grammatography.

L’une concerne la possibilité rare de trouver l’adjectif verbal d’obligation avec la négation non assertive μή, alors que la très grande majorité des occurrences négatives comporte la négation assertive οὐ. L’autre est liée à l’emploi au potentiel de cet adjectif verbal d’obligation : dans ces énoncés, se pose la question de la combinaison entre la modalité du potentiel et la modalité déontique de l’adjectif verbal. Il nous semble que ces deux particularités peu fréquentes sont révélatrices du fonctionnement de la modalité déontique dans l’adjectif verbal d’obligation à l’époque classique (Xénophon et Platon en font ainsi un usage abondant).
N2  - In this study on ancient Greek, we point to two barely noticed specificities of the verbal adjective in –τέος, both linked to deontic root modality. One specificity deals with the rare possibility to find the verbal adjective of obligation in co-occurrence with non assertive negation μή, when assertive negation οὐ occurs in the great majority of the negative uses of this form. The other one is associated with the use of the potential: in these utterances, what is at stake is the combination of two kinds of modality, potential modality and deontic modality (attached to the –τέος form). Such specificities, it seems, are quite revealing as to the working of the ancient Greek verbal adjective of obligation in classical times (when Xenophon and Plato used it frequently).

N2  - In 1797 a rather short work appeared in Paris in two volumes, under the title Pasigraphie in both its French and German versions. The author, Joseph de Maimieux (1753–1820), is said to have coined the term pasigraphie. With the invention of pasigraphy, Maimieux pursued the goal of creating a conceptually based writing system that could be applied to all languages. In this way, a text written in this script could be read in all languages. The pasigraphic system is based on an a priori system of conceptual classification to which written characters are assigned. It is therefore initially an exclusively written language, on which Maimieux two years later also built a spoken language with the Pasilalie. The first arguments against the endeavour represented by the Pasigraphie were brought forward by Maimieux' immediate contemporaries, the ideologues. These objections were re-affirmed in particular by Johann Severin Vater. The decisive difference between Maimieux and his critics lies in the determination of the role of signs in the formation of concepts. While for Maimieux the signs only name the finished concepts, his critics argued that signs have a function in the constitution of the concepts. A universal language is therefore ultimately not possible, since there are no universal concepts and the individual languages lead to different conceptual structures.
N2  - En 1797 se publicó en París una obra poco extensa en dos volúmenes bajo el título de Pasigraphie en las versiones francesa y alemana. Se dice que el término pasigrafía fue creado por el autor Joseph de Maimieux (1753-1820). Con la invención de la pasigrafía, Maimieux tuvo como objetivo crear una escritura conceptual que pudiera aplicarse a todos los idiomas. De esta manera, un texto escrito en esta escritura podría ser leído en todos los idiomas. El sistema pasigráfico se basa en un sistema de clasificación conceptual a priori al que se le asignan caracteres escritos. Se trata, pues, inicialmente de una lengua exclusivamente escrita sobre la que Maimieux dos años más tarde construyó también una lengua hablada o Pasilalía. Ya desde el círculo de los ideólogos se presentaron argumentos serios contra el intento de la Pasigrafía que fue afirmado particularmente por Johann Severin Vater. La diferencia decisiva entre Maimieux y sus críticos radica en la determinación de la función de los signos en la formación de conceptos. Mientras que para Maimieux los signos solo nombran los conceptos preestablecidos, para sus críticos los signos tienen una función en la constitución de los conceptos. Por lo tanto, un lenguaje universal no es posible en última instancia, ya que no hay conceptos universales y los lenguajes individuales conducen a estructuras conceptuales diferentes.

N2  - The focus of this paper is on the modal uses of verb forms and the contribution of shifters (aujourd"hui "today", ici "here") to polyphony. The alternation between indicative and subjunctive and the modal use of the imperfect will be studied from a pragmatic point of view. The imperfect enables the opening of another speaker deixis, without requiring the naming of the other deictic center. Imperfect verb forms can indicate double deixis, allowing the speaker to refer to a source of the communicated information without, however, naming this source.

N2  - Ramón Campos was very much influenced by the sensationist views current in French
linguistic theory and developed these further, even to the point of drawing radical
conclusions. In his opinion, abstraction is solely possible by using words. According to
his ideas, articulated spoken language is the essential prerequisite for higher thought
processes. Furthermore, the adjectives which name characteristics are derived from
nouns. Memory and the formation of general ideas are the result of the “gift of the
word” and by no means are actions of the human mind. Sign language, which was
accepted in French linguistic theory as a precursor of spoken language, is not enough
for carrying out abstractions. The tendency of thought to concretise contributes to the
dissemination of abstractions. No dependent or referential word can be understood as
the original word. He also developed these ideas in his treatise De la desigualdad
personal en la sociedad civil (‘On personal inequality in civil society’), where they
became the basis of a new ethics of communication. This paper intends to explore the
concept of the “gift of the word”, which according to Campos is the only instrument of
abstraction and analysis. Applying this concept, human thought can be divided into two
capacities or powers: imagination and memory.

pensamiento lingüístico francés, el que había incluso llevado a sus extremos más
radicales. Para él, la abstracción se llevaba a cabo por medio de las palabras, del
lenguaje articulado, sin intervención del pensamiento. Los nombres adjetivos son en su
origen sustantivos. La memoria y la formación de las ideas generales son efectos del
don de la palabra, y de ningún modo operaciones del pensamiento. El lenguaje de
acción no es suficiente para la operación de la abstracción. La tendencia del
pensamiento hacia la concretización hace cundir las abstracciones. Ninguna palabra
dependiente o referencial es palabra primitiva. Estas ideas se reafirman también en el
contexto de su obra De la desigualdad personal en la sociedad civil donde sirven de
base para una nueva ética de la comunicación. Estudiaré el concepto de ‘el don de la
palabra’, que en este contexto es el instrumento único de la abstracción o
descomposición, capaz de partir el pensamiento en dos facultades o potencias
diferentes, ‘imaginación’ y ‘memoria’.

N2  - The notion of ‘epiphenomenon’ is usually used to exclude certain
aspects of a scientific object because they are considered to be deduced from others. In linguistics, restrictions of the research object were made, invoking the notion of ‘epiphenomenon’, which was partially done with a polemical attitude, and was always responded to polemically. The best-known definition of languages as an epiphenomenon is that proposed by Chomsky, who declared that the specific realisations of language do not warrant scientific attention, but there were early relegations of properties of individual languages to the domain of an epiphenomenon of grammar, to the domain of an art and not a science. These relegations from a certain point of abstraction did advance theories of language, even though they took a point of abstraction that did not correspond to the complexity of language.

N2  - The name Ideologues refers to a group of philosophers, psychologists, grammarians, educational theorists and medical specialists who for a short period from 1795 to 1805 determined the intellectual climate in France and sought to develop a science of ideas (idéologie). The Ideologues had a rather reserved attitude to Condillac’s (1714–1780) ideas and his sensualist sign theory. They strove for the perfection of language for the needs of thought and of scientific knowledge. The connections with the Ideologues can also be discerned in Russia. In the educational theory, Jean-Baptiste Maudru (1740–1808) was close to the Ideologues and, despite his insufficient knowledge of the Russian language, made some interesting remarks on the connection between the language and the national character. According to Maudru and in agreement with the Ideologues, different typologies of word order are not just an indication of greater or lesser closeness to the natural order. Rather, they indicate differences in national character, which manifest themselves in the specific character of individual languages. Maudru taught at the military academy in Saint Petersburg and published the first Russian grammar in France (Maudru 1802). In his grammar, he sought to link mechanically the specific features of languages and of national characters with the climatic influences. His attempt to revive the theory of climatic influences was criticized by Karamzin. Karamzin also treated the discussion of the metaphoric extension of word meanings as an absurd undertaking, which had no place in grammar.
N2  - Под именем идеологов известна группа философов, психологов, грамматиков, педагогов и медиков, которая в течение непродолжительного периода (1795–1805) определяла духовную жизнь во Франции и хотела создать науку об идеях (idéologie). Общим для представителей данного движения было сдержанное отношение к идеям Кондильяка (1714–1780) и его сенсуалистской теории знаков, а также стремление усовершенствовать язык во имя развития мышления и научного познания. Именно идеологам мы обязаны постановкой ряда принципиальных вопросов, касающихся влияния знаков на идеи, а также изданием целой серии учебников по грамматике и трудов о значении знаков для мышления. Идеологи поддерживали личные контакты в том числе и в России. К идеологам был близок, в частности, Жан-Батист Модрю (1740–1808, Maudru), которому удалось, несмотря на ограниченность его познаний в русском языке, сделать ряд интересных наблюдений касательно связи между языком и национальным характером. Согласно Модрю и в полном соответствии с толкованием идеологов, характерное для того или иного языка расположение членов предложения указывает на нечто совершенно иное, чем просто бóльшую или меньшую степень близости к естественности, а именно на различия в национальном характере, который налагает отпечаток на особенный характер соответствующего языка. Модрю преподавал языки в CанктПетербургском Кадетском корпусе и опубликовал первый во Франции учебник по русской грамматике. Модрю попытался механически соединить специфические особенности языка и национального характера народа, возлагая ответственность на климатические факторы. Его попытку реанимировать климатическую теорию критиковал, в частности, Карамзин, который также считал толкование переносных значений слов абсурдным занятием, которому не место в рамках грамматики.
