N2  - In a previously published article in HIN under the title of “Eduard Dorsch and his unpublished poem on the occasion of Humboldt’s 100th birthday,” I elaborated on Dorsch’s poem that was read in Detroit in front of a German-American audience on Sept. 14, 1869, a day widely celebrated in the US in honor of Humboldt. Although it was not surprising that Dorsch wrote the occasional poem in the first place given his affinities with Humboldt’s world of thought, a discovery of a second occasional poem upon further research in Dorsch’s voluminous papers was indeed unexpected, in this case read on the same date in Monroe, Michigan. Although there are a number of similarities between the Detroit and Monroe versions, there are enough differences that warrant this addendum to my original article.
N2  - In einem bereits in HIN veröffentlichten Artikel mit dem Titel Eduard Dorsch und sein unveröffentlichtes Gelegenheitsgedicht zu Humboldts 100. Geburtstag ging ich auf Dorschs Gedicht ein, das am 14. September 1869 vor einem deutsch-amerikanischen Publikum in Detroit verlesen wurde, an einem Tag, der überall zu Ehren Humboldts in den USA gefeiert wurde. Obwohl es nicht überraschend ist, dass Dorsch angesichts seiner Affinität zu Humboldts Gedankenwelt das Gedicht überhaupt schrieb, war der Fund eines zweiten Gelegenheitsgedichts in Dorschs umfangreichem Nachlass dennoch unerwartet, in diesem Falle am selben Tag in Monroe, Michigan verlesen. Obwohl es eine Reihe von Ähnlichkeiten zwischen den Detroit- und Monroe-Versionen gibt, tauchen auch genug Unterschiede auf, um diesen Nachtrag zu meinem ursprünglichen Artikel zu rechtfertigen.
N2  - En un artículo ya publicado en HIN bajo el título de "Eduard Dorsch y su poema inédito con motivo del centenario de Humboldt", abordé el poema de Dorsch leído en Detroit frente a una audiencia germano-estadounidense el 14 de septiembre de 1869, un día ampliamente celebrado en los Estados Unidos en honor a Humboldt. Aunque no sorprende que Dorsch escribiera el poema de ocasión debido a sus afinidades con la cosmovisión de Humboldt, lo inesperado fue el hallazgo de un segundo poema para la misma ocasión durante un estudio adicional de los voluminosos papeles de Dorsch. Este segundo poema fue leído en la misma fecha en Monroe, Michigan. Si bien existe una serie de similitudes entre las versiones creadas para Detroit y Monroe, también hay suficientes diferencias que justifican este apéndice a mi artículo original.

N2  - Los estudios del viaje se centran en las experiencias, publicaciones y aportes científicos de Humboldt. El artículo estudia la situación política española en 1799, la posición y el influjo del poderoso ministro Urquijo, cuya caída y sus eventuales consecuencias en territorios americanos, son mencionados en forma pasajera y preocupada por Humboldt. Se transcribe el inusual registro de Humboldt como pasajero de la corbeta Castor, con detalles, algunos tergiversados, sobre el influjo de Georg Forster en su formación, su continuado empleo prusiano, su avance hacia territorio portugués y las dudas por la velocidad del viaje. Estos datos, junto con algunas críticas en Quito, contemporáneas y posteriores, así como problemas de al menos dos de sus interlocutores con la Inquisición limeña, ofrecen una “mirada americana”, ciertamente parcial, a Humboldt y explican, posiblemente, los pocos datos y la percepción negativa de su estadía en Lima.
N2  - Die Humboldtstudien erforschen vorzüglich die Erfahrungen, Veröffentlichungen und wissenschaftlichen Beiträge seiner Reise. Der Artikel befasst sich mit der politischen Situation Spaniens im Jahr 1799, dem Einfluss des mächtigen Ministers Urquijo, dessen Sturz und die eventuellen Folgen in Amerika, von Humboldt besorgt, wenn auch nur kurz erwähnt. Der ungewöhnliche Eintrag im Logbuch der Korvette Castor mit detaillierten, teils verdrehten Daten zu Humboldt, den Einfluss Georg Forsters auf seine Ausbildung, sein weiterbestehendes preussisches Dienstverhältnis, sein Vordringen auf portugiesisches Gebiet sowie die Geschwindigkeit seiner Reise, ergibt, zusammen mit teils zeitgenössischen, teils späteren Kritiken in Quito sowie den Problemen mindestens zweier seiner Gesprächspartner mit der peruanischen Inquisition, einen, sicherlich parteiischen „amerikanischen“ Blick auf Humboldt und erklärt möglicherweise die wenigen Daten und seine negative Sicht auf den Aufenthalt in Lima.
N2  - Humboldt research concentrates on the experiences, publications and scientific contributions of his voyage. This article discusses Spain´s political situation in 1799, the influence of powerful minister Urquijo, his fall and eventual consequences in America, as mentioned shortly but with a certain concern by Humboldt. The unusually detailed Callao log-book register with partly misleading information on Humboldt, Georg Forster´s importance in his education, his ongoing services to the Prussian king, his advance on to Portuguese territory and the speed of his voyage, together with certain criticisms in Quito, some during his stay, others some years later as well as problems with the Peruvian Inquisition of at least two of his Lima interlocutors offer an “American”, though certainly partial view on Humboldt and may explain his limited journal information and negative vision of the Lima sojourn.
