The ability to efficiently process rapid changes in auditory information is important for decoding speech and thereby crucial during language acquisition. Investigating functional networks of speech perception in infancy might elucidate neuronal ensembles supporting perceptual abilities that gate language acquisition. Interhemispheric specializations for language have been demonstrated in infants. How these asymmetries are shaped by basic temporal acoustic properties is under debate. We recently provided evidence that newborns process non-linguistic sounds sharing temporal features with language in a differential and lateralized fashion. The present study used the same material while measuring brain responses of 6 and 3 month old infants using simultaneous recordings of electroencephalography (EEG) and near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). NIRS reveals that the lateralization observed in newborns remains constant over the first months of life. While fast acoustic modulations elicit bilateral neuronal activations, slow modulations lead to right-lateralized responses. Additionally, auditory-evoked potentials and oscillatory EEG responses show differential responses for fast and slow modulations indicating a sensitivity for temporal acoustic variations. Oscillatory responses reveal an effect of development, that is, 6 but not 3 month old infants show stronger theta-band desynchronization for slowly modulated sounds. Whether this developmental effect is due to increasing fine-grained perception for spectrotemporal sounds in general remains speculative. Our findings support the notion that a more general specialization for acoustic properties can be considered the basis for lateralization of speech perception. The results show that concurrent assessment of vascular based imaging and electrophysiological responses have great potential in the research on language acquisition. Moreover, investigations with American-English- and Dutch-learning infants suggest that processing prosodic boundary markings involves a weighting of these cues. This weighting seems to develop with increasing exposure to the native language and to underlie crosslinguistic variation. In the following, we report the results of four experiments using the headturn preference procedure to explore the perception of prosodic boundary cues in German infants. We presented 8-month-old infants with a sequence of names in two different prosodic groupings, with or without boundary markers. Infants discriminated both sequences when the boundary was marked by all three cues (Experiment 1) and when it was marked by a pitch change and preboundary lengthening in combination (Experiment 2). The presence of a pitch change (Experiment 3) or preboundary lengthening (Experiment 4) as single cues did not lead to a successful discrimination. Our results indicate that pause is not a necessary cue for German infants. Pitch change and preboundary lengthening in combination, but not as single cues, are sufficient. Hence, by 8 months infants only rely on a convergence of boundary markers. Comparisons with adults' performance on the same stimulus materials suggest that the pattern observed with the 8-month-olds is already consistent with that of adults. We discuss our findings with respect to crosslinguistic variation and the development of a language-specific prosodic cue weighting. The stimuli were recorded by a native German female speaker. Results revealed that these French/German bilingual 6-month olds have a trochaic bias (as evidenced by a preference to listen to the trochaic pattern). Hence, their listening preference is comparable to that of monolingual German-learning 6-month-olds, but differs from that of monolingual French-learning 6-month-olds who did not show any preference (Noble et al., 2009). In particular, prosodic phrase boundaries divide the continuous speech stream into chunks reflecting the semantic and syntactic structure of an utterance. This chunking or prosodic phrasing plays a critical role in both spoken language processing and language acquisition. Aiming at a better understanding of the underlying processing mechanisms and their acquisition, the present work investigates factors that influence prosodic phrase boundary perception in adults and infants. Using the event-related potential (ERP) technique, three experimental studies examined the role of prosodic context (i.e., phrase length) in German phrase boundary perception and of the main prosodic boundary cues, namely pitch change, final lengthening, and pause. With regard to the boundary cues, the dissertation focused on the questions which cues or cue combination are essential for the perception of a prosodic boundary and on whether and how this cue weighting develops during infancy. Using ERPs is advantageous because the technique captures the immediate impact of (linguistic) information during on-line processing. Moreover, as it can be applied independently of specific task demands or an overt response performance, it can be used with both infants and adults. ERPs are particularly suitable to study the time course and underlying mechanisms of boundary perception, because a specific ERP component, the Closure Positive Shift (CPS) is well established as neuro-physiological indicator of prosodic boundary perception in adults. The results of the three experimental studies first underpin that the prosodic context plays an immediate role in the processing of prosodic boundary information. Moreover, the second study reveals that adult listeners perceive a prosodic boundary also on the basis of a sub-set of the boundary cues available in the speech signal. Both ERP and simultaneously collected behavioral data (i.e., prosodic judgements) suggest that the combination of pitch change and final lengthening triggers boundary perception; however, when presented as single cues, neither pitch change nor final lengthening were sufficient. Finally, testing six- and eight-month-old infants shows that the early sensitivity for prosodic information is reflected in a brain response resembling the adult CPS. For both age groups, brain responses to prosodic boundaries cued by pitch change and final lengthening revealed a positivity that can be interpreted as a CPS-like infant ERP component. In contrast, but comparable to the adults’ response pattern, pitch change as a single cue does not provoke an infant CPS. These results show that infant phrase boundary perception is not exclusively based on pause detection and hint at an early ability to exploit subtle, relational prosodic cues in speech perception. N2 - Die Wahrnehmung prosodischer Phrasengrenzen spielt eine zentrale Rolle sowohl im frühen Spracherwerb als auch bei der auditiven Sprachperzeption: Prosodische Grenzmarkierungen sind insbesondere relevant, da sie den Sprachstrom gliedern (so genanntes chunking), dabei die syntaktische Struktur einer Äußerung widerspiegeln und zusammenhängende Sinneinheiten erkennbar machen. Um die der Verarbeitung prosodischer Information zugrunde liegenden Mechanismen und deren Erwerb besser charakterisieren zu können, befasst die vorliegende Dissertation mit Faktoren, die die Wahrnehmung prosodischer Grenzmarkierungen bei Erwachsenen und Säuglingen beeinflussen. Mithilfe der Erhebung Ereigniskorrelierter Hirnpotentiale (EKPs) wurde untersucht, welche Rolle der prosodische Kontext (hier: die Phrasenlänge) sowie die an Phrasengrenzen auftretenden Hinweisreize (sogenannte prosodische Cues) bei der Wahrnehmung prosodischer Grenzen im Deutschen spielen. Die untersuchten prosodischen Cues umfassen das Auftreten von Tonhöhenveränderung (pitch change) und finaler Dehnung (final lengthening) sowie Pausensetzung (pause). Es wurde hierbei der Frage nachgegangen, welche Cues oder Cue-Kombinationen für die Wahrnehmung einer Phrasengrenze relevant sind und ob bzw. wie sich diese Gewichtung im Säuglingsalter entwickelt. EKPs sind insbesondere geeignet, da sie als on-line Methode die unmittelbare Integration prosodischer Information beim Sprachverstehen erfassen und sowohl bei Erwachsenen als auch bei Säuglingen angewendet werden können. Zudem gibt es mit dem closure positive shift (CPS) eine als Korrelat der Wahrnehmung größerer prosodischer Grenzen etablierte EKP-Komponente. Die Ergebnisse der drei experimentellen Studien untermauern, dass der Äußerungskontext eine unmittelbare Rolle bei der Verarbeitung von prosodischen Grenzmarkierungen spielt. Darüber hinaus konnte gezeigt werden, dass erwachsene Hörer eine prosodische Grenze auch basierend auf einem Sub-Set der möglichen, im akustischen Signal verfügbaren, prosodischen Cues wahrnehmen: Die Kombination von Tonhöhenveränderung und finaler Dehnung ist ausreichend, um die Wahrnehmung einer Phrasengrenze zu evozieren; als alleinige Cues sind jedoch weder Tonhöhenveränderung noch finale Dehnung hinreichend. Dies offenbarte sich sowohl im Ausbleiben des CPS als auch in simultan erhobenen Verhaltensdaten (Beurteilung der prosodischen Struktur). Schließlich ergab die Untersuchung sechs- und achtmonatiger Säuglinge, dass sich die frühe Sensitivität für prosodische Informationen in einem neurophysiologischen Korrelat widerspiegelt, welches dem CPS bei Erwachsenen gleicht. Die EKP-Daten zeigten, dass sowohl sechs- als auch achtmonatige Säuglinge prosodische Phrasengrenzen anhand der Kombination von Tonhöhenveränderung und finaler Dehnung wahrnehmen, wohingegen die Tonhöhenveränderung allein auch bei Säuglingen keinen CPS auslöst. Previous functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS) data (Lloyd-Fox et al., 2009) showed larger blood-oxygenation changes for social compared to non-social stimuli in the posterior temporal cortex of five-month-old infants. We sought to replicate and extend these findings by using fNIRS to study the neural basis of social perception in relation to infant temperament (Negative Affect) in 37 five-to-eight-month-old infants. Infants watched short videos displaying either hand and facial movements of female actors (social dynamic condition) or moving toys and machinery (non-social dynamic condition), while fNIRS data were collected over temporal brain regions. Negative Affect was measured using the Infant Behavior Questionnaire. Results showed significantly larger blood-oxygenation changes in the right posterior-temporal region in the social compared to the non-social condition. Furthermore, this differential activation was smaller in infants showing higher Negative Affect. Our results replicate those of Lloyd-Fox et al. and confirmed that five-to-eight-month-old infants show cortical specialization for social perception. Furthermore, the decreased cortical sensitivity to social stimuli in infants showing high Negative Affect may be an early biomarker for later difficulties in social interaction. Die Wortsegmentierung stellt eine der wesentlichen Herausforderungen für Säuglinge im Spracherwerb dar, da gesprochene Sprache kontinuierlich ist und Wortgrenzen nicht zuverlässig durch akustische Pausen markiert werden. Crosslinguistische Studien zeigten, dass eine sprachübergreifende Segmentierung für einsprachig aufwachsende Säuglinge nur erfolgreich bewältigt wird, wenn die nicht-native Sprache rhythmische Eigenschaften mit ihrer Muttersprache teilt (Houston, Jusczyk, Kuijpers, Coolen & Cutler, 2000; Höhle, 2002; Polka & Sundara, 2012). In vier Studien dieser Dissertation wurden mit behavioralen (Headturn Preference Paradigma) und elektrophysiologischen Untersuchungen (Elektroenzephalografie) monolingual Deutsch aufwachsende und bilingual Deutsch-Französisch aufwachsende Säuglinge im Alter von 9 Monaten untersucht. Dabei wurde der Frage nachgegangen, ob monolingual Deutsch aufwachsende Säuglinge im Alter von 9 Monaten in der Lage sind, ihre Muttersprache Deutsch und die rhythmisch unähnliche Sprache Französisch zu segmentieren. Mit anderen Worten: Können monolinguale Säuglinge im Alter von 9 Monaten ihre Segmentierungsprozeduren modifizieren bzw. von ihrer bevorzugten Segmentierung abweichen, um auch nicht-muttersprachlichen Input erfolgreich zu segmentieren? Bezogen auf die bilingualen Sprachlerner wurde der Frage nachgegangen, ob zweisprachig aufwachsende Säuglinge vergleichbare Segmentierungsfähigkeiten wie monolingual aufwachsende Säuglinge aufweisen und ob sich zudem ein Einfluss der Sprachdominanz auf die Entwicklung der Wortsegmentierungsfähigkeiten in einer bilingualen Population zeigt. Durch die gewählten Methoden konnten sowohl Verhaltenskorrelate als auch elektrophysiologische Korrelate zur Beantwortung der Fragestellungen herangezogen werden. Darüber hinaus ermöglichte das EEG durch ereigniskorrelierte Potenziale (EKPs) einen Einblick in Lern- und Verarbeitungsprozesse, die mit Verhaltensmethoden nicht erfassbar waren. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass monolingual Deutsch aufwachsende Säuglinge im Alter von 9 Monaten sowohl ihre Muttersprache als auch die nicht-native Sprache Französisch erfolgreich segmentieren. Die Fähigkeit zur Segmentierung der nicht-nativen Sprache Französisch wird jedoch beeinflusst von der Muttersprache: monolinguale Säuglinge, die mit Französisch zuerst getestet wurden, segmentierten sowohl das Französische als auch das im Anschluss präsentierte deutsche Sprachmaterial. Monolinguale Säuglinge die zuerst mit Deutsch und anschließend mit Französisch getestet wurden, segmentierten die deutschen Stimuli, jedoch nicht das französische Sprachmaterial. Bilingual Deutsch-Französisch aufwachsende Säuglinge segmentieren im Alter von 9 Monaten beide Muttersprachen erfolgreich. Die Ergebnisse deuten zudem auf einen Einfluss der Sprachdominanz auf die Wortsegmentierungsfähigkeiten von zweisprachig aufwachsenden Säuglingen. Die balancierten Bilingualen segmentieren beide Muttersprachen erfolgreich, die unbalancierten Bilingualen zeigen nur für die jeweils dominante Sprache eine erfolgreiche Segmentierung. Zusammenfassend liefert diese Arbeit erstmals Evidenz für eine erfolgreiche sprachübergreifende Segmentierung in prosodisch differenten Sprachen unterschiedlicher Rhythmusklassen in einer monolingualen Population. Darüber hinaus liefern die Studien dieser Arbeit Evidenz dafür, dass bilingual aufwachsende Säuglinge bezogen auf die Wortsegmentierungsfähigkeiten eine vergleichbare Entwicklung wie einsprachig aufwachsende Sprachlerner zeigen. Dieses Ergebnis erweitert die Datenlage bisheriger Studien, die für verschiedene Entwicklungsschritte im Spracherwerb keine Verzögerung, sondern eine zu monolingual aufwachsenden Säuglingen vergleichbare Entwicklung innerhalb einer bilingualen Population nachweisen konnten (Sprachdiskrimination: Byers-Heinlein, Burns & Werker, 2010; Bosch & Sebastian-Galles, 1997; Phonemdiskrimination: Albareda-Castellot, Pons & Sebastián-Gallés, 2011; Wahrnehmung rhythmischer Eigenschaften: Bijeljac-Babic, Höhle & Nazzi, 2016). N2 - This dissertation studies early word segmentation in monolingual and bilingual language acquisition. Word segmentation is one of the main challenges for infants in language acquisition, since spoken language is continuous and word boundaries are not reliably marked by acoustic pauses. Numerous studies have shown for several languages that segmentation abilities of monolingual infants emerge between 6 and 12 months of age (e.g., English: Jusczyk, Houston & Newsome, 1999; French: Nazzi, Mersad, Sundara, Iakimova & Polka, 2014; German: Höhle & Weissenborn, 2003; Bartels, Darcy & Höhle, 2009). Early word segmentation abilities are language-specific (Polka & Sundara, 2012). Studies showed that cross-linguistic word segmentation for monolingual infants is only successfully mastered when the non-native language shares rhythmic features with their native language (Houston, Jusczyk, Kuijpers, Coolen & Cutler, 2000; Höhle, 2002; Polka & Sundara, 2012). Using behavioral (Headturn Preference Paradigm) and electrophysiological methods (electroencephalography) 9-month-old infants growing up either monolingual (German) or bilingual (German and French) were tested on their word segmentation abilities. The study investigated whether German-monolingual infants are able to segment their native language German and the rhythmically different language French. In other words, can monolingual infants at 9 months modify their segmentation procedures or switch from their preferred segmentation to successfully segment non-native input? With respect to bilingual language learners, it was investigated whether infants growing up bilingually show comparable segmentation abilities to monolingual infants and whether, in addition, an influence of language dominance on the development of word segmentation abilities is evident in a bilingual population. The methods used allowed both behavioral and electrophysiological correlates to be used to answer the questions. In addition, the EEG provided insights into learning and cognitive processes through event-related potentials (ERPs) that were not accessible by behavioral methods. Results show that monolingual-German infants successfully segmented both their native language and the non-native language French at 9 months of age. However, the ability to segment the non-native language French is influenced by the native language: monolingual infants tested with French first segmented both the French and the German language material presented afterwards, whereas monolingual infants tested with German first and French second segmented the German stimuli but not the French. Bilingual German-French infants successfully segmented both native languages at 9 months of age. The results also suggest an influence of language dominance on the word segmentation abilities of infants growing up bilingually. Balanced bilinguals successfully segmented both native languages, whereas unbalanced bilinguals showed successful segmentation only for the dominant language. In sum, this work provides the first evidence for successful cross-linguistic segmentation in prosodically distinct languages of different rhythm classes in a monolingual population. Furthermore, the studies in this thesis provide evidence that bilingual infants show similar development to monolingual language learners in terms of word segmentation abilities. This finding extends the data of previous studies within a bilingual population that found no delay for various developmental steps in language acquisition, but rather comparable development to monolingual infants (speech discrimination: Byers-Heinlein, Burns & Werker, 2010; Bosch & Sebastian-Galles, 1997; phoneme discrimination: Albareda-Castellot, Pons & Sebastián-Gallés, 2011; perception of rhythmic properties: Bijeljac-Babic, Cave & Nazzi, 2016).
