Am deutlichsten vielleicht belegt dies der enorme Erfolg von Daniel Kehlmanns Roman Die Vermessung der Welt, der ohne die zuvor skizzierte Entwicklung nicht denkbar gewesen wäre. Es ist vor diesem Hintergrund nicht nur reizvoll, sondern aufschlußreich, sich mit dem großen Erfolg dieses kleinen Romans zu beschäftigen. Worum geht es in Die Vermessung der Welt? Und wie läßt sich das »Phänomen Kehlmann« aus etwas größerer Distanz erklären?
N2  - In the last 25 years, Alexander von Humboldt‘s popularity has radically changed in the german-speaking public opinion. Proof of this are not only television surveys about the most famous germans - in which Alexander von Humboldt now regularly figures - or television series about contemporary expeditions, which constantly refer to Humboldt‘s name; perhaps what most clearly verifies this change is the great success of Daniel Kehlmann‘s novel Die Vermessung der Welt. Without the recent developments outlined above, this novel‘s degree of impact would have been unimaginable. To study the great success of this text against this backdrop is not only attractive, but also revealing. What is Die Vermessung der Welt really about? And how can we explain the »Kehlmann phenomenon« from a greater distance?

N2  - Alexander von Humboldt verstand sich zwar sicher nicht als Direktor eines Museums, war aber sehr wohl der Welt der Museen, Bibliotheken und Archive nicht nur als Besucher und Leser, sondern auch als Sammler und Forscher verpflichtet. Durch seine Forschungsreisen nach Amerika und Asien vermehrte er im Verlauf eines langen Gelehrtenlebens viele Sammlungen durch eigene Sammeltätigkeit vor Ort. Seine Feldforschung blieb dabei nicht auf naturwissenschaftliche Aspekte begrenzt, sondern bezog ganz selbstverständlich auch die verschiedenartigsten kulturwissenschaftlichen Forschungsgegenstände mitein. Diese transdisziplinär agierende Praxis im Feld lässt sich zugleich als eine transareale, einzelne Areas übergreifende und damit im Sinne von TransArea Studies aus den Beziehungen, Zirkulationen und Wechselwirkungen jenseits des bloß Territorialen sich speisende Wissenschaftskonzeption begreifen. So lässt sich in seiner Auseinandersetzung mit der amerikanischen Tropenwelt eine doppelte transareale Relationalität erkennen, die einerseits intern die Tropenwelt unterschiedlicher Kontinente miteinander verbindet, andererseits aber extern die Tropen insbesondere mit den gemäßigten Zonen in Relation setzt, um dadurch erst globale Zusammenhänge - einschließlich der sich verändernden Schneegrenzen oder der Wanderungsbewegungen der Pflanzenformen, für die sich die mobile Wissenschaft Humboldts in besonderem Maße interessierte - skizzieren und erläutern zu können. Die Tropen sind für ihn die Zone höchster Mannigfaltigkeit und Vielverbundenheit - oder um es mit heutigen Begriffen zum Ausdruck zu bringen: die TransArea par excellence.
N2  - Although Alexander von Humboldt certainly perceived himself not as director of a museum, he was commited to the world of museums, libraries, and archives, not only as a visitor and reader, but also as a collector and researcher. Through his travels to America and Asia and in the course of a long scholarly life, he significantly increased many collections through his own activities as collector on site. His research in the field was not merely limited to aspects of the natural sciences, but inherently incorporated the most diverse objects of cultural research. In the light of what we today might call TransArea Studies, this transdisciplinary practice in the field can also be understood as transareal, thus as a conceptualization of research that spans across particular areas and focuses on the relationships, circulations and interactions of space beyond the territorial definitions. Consequently, we can recognize in Humboldt’s examination of the American tropics a double transareal association. On the one hand, his works interconnect the tropical world of different continents, while setting up on the other hand relations with the temperate zones in an extrapolation that outlines and explains global relations of nature - including the changing snow limits or the migration of plants, so crucial for the mobile science Humboldt advocated. For Humboldt, the tropics are the epitome of diversity and multiple connectedness. In other words: the transarea par excellence.

N2  - Transarea studies focus upon spaces as created by the movements that criss-cross them. From this point of view, from its very beginnings, literature is closely interrelated with a vectorial (and much less with a purely spatial) conception of history - and with urbanity, which plays a decisive role in Gilgamesh's travels through a (narrative) cosmos centered upon the city of Uruk. This article explores the city as a transareal space of movement in three examples of literature, with no fixed abode, around the turn of the millennium, i.e. Assia Djebar's Les Nuits de Strasbourg, Emine Sevgi Oezdamar's Istanbul-Berlin Trilogy, and Cecile Wajsbrot's L'ile aux musees. These three writers project, in a very specific way, cities in motion as anagrammatic and fractal structures.

In his view of the Americas, he was able to subvert the dominantly spatial history of the 'new hemisphere' found in Cornelius de Pauw or Guillaume-Thomas Raynal by introducing dynamic and vectorial structures that allow us to focus on the Americas not as 'the other' but as a highly interrelated part of the world. Humboldt's Weltbewusstsein ('world consciousness') develops a new discourse that can be best understood as a complex answer to the second period of accelerated globalisation.
