BT - An Efficient Hybrid PMem-DRAM Key-Value Store
JF - Proceedings of the VLDB Endowment
N2 - Key-value stores (KVSs) have found wide application in modern software systems. For persistence, their data resides in slow secondary storage, which requires KVSs to employ various techniques to increase their read and write performance from and to the underlying medium. Emerging persistent memory (PMem) technologies offer data persistence at close-to-DRAM speed, making them a promising alternative to classical disk-based storage. However, simply drop-in replacing existing storage with PMem does not yield good results, as block-based access behaves differently in PMem than on disk and ignores PMem's byte addressability, layout, and unique performance characteristics. In this paper, we propose three PMem-specific access patterns and implement them in a hybrid PMem-DRAM KVS called Viper. We employ a DRAM-based hash index and a PMem-aware storage layout to utilize the random-write speed of DRAM and efficient sequential-write performance PMem. Our evaluation shows that Viper significantly outperforms existing KVSs for core KVS operations while providing full data persistence. Moreover, Viper outperforms existing PMem-only, hybrid, and disk-based KVSs by 4-18x for write workloads, while matching or surpassing their get performance.

T1 - Virtualizing physical space
T1 - Virtualisierung von Physischem Raum
N2 - The true cost for virtual reality is not the hardware, but the physical space it requires, as a one-to-one mapping of physical space to virtual space allows for the most immersive way of navigating in virtual reality. Such “real-walking” requires physical space to be of the same size and the same shape of the virtual world represented. This generally prevents real-walking applications from running on any space that they were not designed for.
To reduce virtual reality’s demand for physical space, creators of such applications let users navigate virtual space by means of a treadmill, altered mappings of physical to virtual space, hand-held controllers, or gesture-based techniques. While all of these solutions succeed at reducing virtual reality’s demand for physical space, none of them reach the same level of immersion that real-walking provides.
Our approach is to virtualize physical space: instead of accessing physical space directly, we allow applications to express their need for space in an abstract way, which our software systems then map to the physical space available. We allow real-walking applications to run in spaces of different size, different shape, and in spaces containing different physical objects. We also allow users immersed in different virtual environments to share the same space.
Our systems achieve this by using a tracking volume-independent representation of real-walking experiences — a graph structure that expresses the spatial and logical relationships between virtual locations, virtual elements contained within those locations, and user interactions with those elements. When run in a specific physical space, this graph representation is used to define a custom mapping of the elements of the virtual reality application and the physical space by parsing the graph using a constraint solver. To re-use space, our system splits virtual scenes and overlap virtual geometry. The system derives this split by means of hierarchically clustering of our virtual objects as nodes of our bi-partite directed graph that represents the logical ordering of events of the experience. We let applications express their demands for physical space and use pre-emptive scheduling between applications to have them share space. We present several application examples enabled by our system. They all enable real-walking, despite being mapped to physical spaces of different size and shape, containing different physical objects or other users.
We see substantial real-world impact in our systems. Today’s commercial virtual reality applications are generally designing to be navigated using less immersive solutions, as this allows them to be operated on any tracking volume. While this is a commercial necessity for the developers, it misses out on the higher immersion offered by real-walking. We let developers overcome this hurdle by allowing experiences to bring real-walking to any tracking volume, thus potentially bringing real-walking to consumers.

T1 - Visualization and quantitation of Wg trafficking in the Drosophila wing imaginal epithelium
JF - Bio-protocol
N2 - Secretory Wnt trafficking can be studied in the polarized epithelial monolayer of Drosophila wing imaginal discs (WID). In this tissue, Wg (Drosophila Wnt-I) is presented on the apical surface of its source cells before being internalized into the endosomal pathway. Long-range Wg secretion and spread depend on secondary secretion from endosomal compartments, but the exact post-endocytic fate of Wg is poorly understood. Here, we summarize and present three protocols for the immunofluorescencebased visualization and quantitation of different pools of intracellular and extracellular Wg in WID: (1) steady-state extracellular Wg; (2) dynamic Wg trafficking inside endosomal compartments; and (3) dynamic Wg release to the cell surface. Using a genetic driver system for gene manipulation specifically at the posterior part of the WID (EnGal4) provides a robust internal control that allows for direct comparison of signal intensities of control and manipulated compartments of the same WID. Therefore, it also circumvents the high degree of staining variability usually associated with whole-tissue samples. In combination with the genetic manipulation of Wg pathway components that is easily feasible in Drosophila, these methods provide a tool-set for the dissection of secretory Wg trafficking and can help us to understand how Wnt proteins travel along endosomal compartments for short-and long-range signal secretion.

T1 - Voice-controlled intelligent personal assistants in health care
BT - International Delphi Study
JF - Journal of medical internet research : international scientific journal for medical research, information and communication on the internet ; JMIR
N2 - Background: Voice-controlled intelligent personal assistants (VIPAs), such as Amazon Echo and Google Home, involve artificial intelligence-powered algorithms designed to simulate humans. Their hands-free interface and growing capabilities have a wide range of applications in health care, covering off-clinic education, health monitoring, and communication. However, conflicting factors, such as patient safety and privacy concerns, make it difficult to foresee the further development of VIPAs in health care.
Objective: This study aimed to develop a plausible scenario for the further development of VIPAs in health care to support decision making regarding the procurement of VIPAs in health care organizations. Methods: We conducted a two-stage Delphi study with an internationally recruited panel consisting of voice assistant experts, medical professionals, and representatives of academia, governmental health authorities, and nonprofit health associations having expertise with voice technology. Twenty projections were formulated and evaluated by the panelists. Descriptive statistics were used to derive the desired scenario.
Results: The panelists expect VIPAs to be able to provide solid medical advice based on patients' personal health information and to have human-like conversations. However, in the short term, voice assistants might neither provide frustration-free user experience nor outperform or replace humans in health care. With a high level of consensus, the experts agreed with the potential of VIPAs to support elderly people and be widely used as anamnesis, informational, self-therapy, and communication tools by patients and health care professionals. Although users' and governments' privacy concerns are not expected to decrease in the near future, the panelists believe that strict regulations capable of preventing VIPAs from providing medical help services will not be imposed.
Conclusions: According to the surveyed experts, VIPAs will show notable technological development and gain more user trust in the near future, resulting in widespread application in health care. However, voice assistants are expected to solely support health care professionals in their daily operations and will not be able to outperform or replace medical staff.

T1 - Volcanic tremor extraction and earthquake detection using music information retrieval algorithms
JF - Seismological research letters
N2 - Volcanic tremor signals are usually observed before or during volcanic eruptions and must be monitored to evaluate the volcanic activity. A challenge in studying seismic signals of volcanic origin is the coexistence of transient signal swarms and long-lasting volcanic tremor signals. Separating transient events from volcanic tremors can, therefore, contrib-ute to improving upon our understanding of the underlying physical processes. Exploiting the idea of harmonic-percussive separation in musical signal processing, we develop a method to extract the harmonic volcanic tremor signals and to detect tran-sient events from seismic recordings. Based on the similarity properties of spectrogram frames in the time-frequency domain, we decompose the signal into two separate spec-trograms representing repeating (harmonic) and nonrepeating (transient) patterns, which correspond to volcanic tremor signals and earthquake signals, respectively. We reconstruct the harmonic tremor signal in the time domain from the complex spectrogram of the repeating pattern by only considering the phase components for the frequency range in which the tremor amplitude spectrum is significantly contribut-ing to the energy of the signal. The reconstructed signal is, therefore, clean tremor signal without transient events. Furthermore, we derive a characteristic function suitable for the detection of tran-sient events (e.g., earthquakes) by integrating amplitudes of the nonrepeating spectro-gram over frequency at each time frame. Considering transient events like earthquakes, 78% of the events are detected for signal-to-noise ratio = 0.1 in our semisynthetic tests. In addition, we compared the number of detected earthquakes using our method for one month of continuous data recorded during the Holuhraun 2014-2015 eruption in Iceland with the bulletin presented in Agustsdottir et al. (2019). Our single station event detection algorithm identified 84% of the bulletin events. Moreover, we detected a total of 12,619 events, which is more than twice the number of the bulletin events.

T1 - Voltammetry and single-molecule in situ scanning tunnelling microscopy of the redox metalloenzyme human sulfite oxidase
JF - ChemElectroChem
N2 - Human sulfite oxidase (hSO) is a homodimeric two-domain enzyme central in the biological sulfur cycle. A pyranopterin molybdenum cofactor (Moco) is the catalytic site and a heme b(5) group located in the N-terminal domain. The two domains are connected by a flexible linker region. Electrons produced at the Moco in sulfite oxidation, are relayed via heme b(5) to electron acceptors or an electrode surface. Inter-domain conformational changes between an open and a closed enzyme conformation, allowing "gated" electron transfer has been suggested. We first recorded cyclic voltammetry (CV) of hSO on single-crystal Au(111)-electrode surfaces modified by self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) both of a short rigid thiol, cysteamine and of a longer structurally flexible thiol, omega-amino-octanethiol (AOT). hSO on cysteamine SAMs displays a well-defined pair of voltammetric peaks around -0.207 V vs. SCE in the absence of sulfite substrate, but no electrocatalysis. hSO on AOT SAMs displays well-defined electrocatalysis, but only "fair" quality voltammetry in the absence of sulfite. We recorded next in situ scanning tunnelling spectroscopy (STS) of hSO on AOT modified Au(111)-electrodes, disclosing, a 2-5 % surface coverage of strong molecular scale contrasts, assigned to single hSO molecules, notably with no contrast difference in the absence and presence of sulfite. In situ STS corroborated this observation with a sigmoidal tunnelling current/overpotential correlation.

Sie sind auf- gerufen, „to forget (however briefly) everything they have experienced before. What matters is this ‚now‘, the hic et nunc of the theatre.“

N2 - The present study examines articles published in Zeitschrift fur Erziehungswissenschaft (ZfE-Journal of Educational Sciences) between 1998 and 2017, to discover whether the thematic focus of the articles it published during this period changed over time. To do this, we scrutinized articles in four consecutive five-year periods: 1998-2002, 2003-2007, 2008-2012, 2013-2017. Using the titles and abstracts of 821 articles published between 1998 and 2017, we conducted a quantitative text analysis and identified the most frequent and most characteristic bigrams that emerged during these periods. In addition, we looked at whether specific word stems (e.g., "erziehungswissenschaft", "bildungsforsch", "didakt") began to occur more frequently over the two decades under study. Finally, we used the text mining tool Leximancer (TM) to construct concept maps that point to the semantic structure of the topics and key concepts in the analyzed articles. The results indicate that, over the course of this twenty-year period, the ZfE predominantly published empirical articles with a focus on the social aspects of education, but that its focus on research into general pedagogy decreased in frequency.

T1 - Was ist HipHop?
T1 - What is hip-hop?
BT - Diskurse, Praktiken und genuine Eigenschaften eines Kulturphänomens
BT - discourses, practices and genuine characteristics of a cultural phenomenon
N2 - The described dissertation is an investigative research paper, covering the dynamic and ever-changing phenomena of hip-hop. The author will explain the continued attraction drawn by the hip-hop culture and will attempt to explain its’ reproduceable impact in more detail. To achieve this, he starts with a historic discourse analysis of the hip-hop culture. In order to give a greater understanding of the subject he analyses the different forms, protagonists as well as the dialogue of hip-hop.
The author will show that hip-hop has multi-layered characteristics and through elaboration using scientific tools and media sources he will further qualify and criticize the subject. The research combines cultural and educational science literature with different time-relevant and historic presentations alongside graphic images. Especially self-staged photos of rap artists and personal testimonials from interviews, which the author personally conducted, with a variety of artists throughout Germany, will be analysed. Besides the accounts reflected in the interviews a large emphasis has been focused on imagery interpretation in line with Bohnsack, which will serve as the source to the multi-layering thesis.
In this connection two images of artists Lady Bitch Ray and Kollegah are interpreted according to Bohnsack (2014), to show that hip-hop does not only have a lyrical and musical component to it but is also visually staged and produced. This research work will conclude that it is possible in hip-hop culture to present contrasting viewpoints through the use of cultural traditions, such as ‘boasting’.
The ongoing open-mindedness of hip-hop will become clear through the analysis of ‘sampling’ and the ‘rap battle’, the author will proof how such traditional techniques create multi-layered hip-hop characteristics. With this conclusion he supports a type of modular theory, stating that principally anybody can take advantage of what hip-hop as to offer, regardless of their preferences, interests, or affections.
Through the diversity of opinions in hip-hop culture, which the author is presented with through the interpretation of the interviews, his proposition becomes clear and he is able to conclude that the phenomenon of hip-hop is more than just a temporary fad. Hip-hop has the fundamental potential to continuously change, and through its open-mindedness manages to keep increasing its’ popularity and demand over time. This research paper builds on the continuous interest into the research of hip-hop culture and asks important questions, which validates further research into the topic and aims to make hip-hop more accessible.

BT - ein Leitfaden für Erziehungsberechtigte
BT - a guide for guardians
N2 - The main objective of the bachelor thesis is a theoretical examination of the topic of water familiarization in the child's own home. Based on this analysis, the author creates a handout for guardians as a theory-practice transfer with the most relevant information of her qualification thesis in a condensed form. In order for the guardians to be able to proactively support their children, the handout should be appropriate for the addressees and concise, without withholding essential details from the guardians. The parents receive a handout that contains the most important information about water familiarization at home. Among other things, they will learn about the maximum possible time children should spend in the water and the optimal temperature of the bathing water. In addition, they receive important information about the body reactions that can occur through or in the water. These are, for example, the eyelid closure reflex or the cold stimulus. They are informed about essential safety aspects and receive a compact presentation of rules of conduct, the so-called do's and dont's. The exercises/games will be selected according to the current guidelines of the DGUV (2019) for the contents of water familiarization and will be structured according to the home conditions. The handout will also include exercises/games in which no properties or effects of water are learned. Breathing and diving exercises are also described in the handout. The fear of water, as soon as it manifests itself, is known to be the biggest obstacle for non-swimmers (DGUV, 2019). That is why the author, by informing about this fear in her qualification work and the handout, wants to bring about that the guardians are able to take away the children's feeling of fear towards the water or to maintain their freedom from fear and to subsequently enable the children to enjoy the movement in the water. "The more children enjoy bathing in infancy, the less fear they associate with the medium, the faster they will learn to swim later" (DGUV, 2016, p. 6).
The theoretical foundations of the handouts present the central aspects and goals of familiarization with water. These are taken from the publication of the German Social Accident Insurance (DGUV) from 2019, which is significant in the context of school. German Social Accident Insurance from the year 2019. This involves the perception of the specific conditions of water as well as their approach and habituation. The children experience the properties of density, pressure and temperature of the element and the influence of water on the body. These are water resistance, buoyancy and the water force. Thus The exercises in which the children get to know the water or come into intensive contact with it for the first time are mentioned at the beginning. This is followed by exercises, predominantly in play forms, with which the joy is to be waked. The last phase consists of exercises that require specific handling of the water. This structure is oriented to the first three phases according to Baumeister's (1984) methodology for getting used to water. Thus, the methodological principle from the simple to the complex is also used as a theoretical basis. Legahn (2007) describes some learning models that can be applied to water familiarization depending on age and developmental stage. In the handout, the author will draw on these and execute appropriate learning techniques. Examples include model learning (imitating people, animals, or dolls) or active learning (building movement through play improves skills). The materials needed are detailed in the handout under the heading of exercises/games and serve as initial information. Next to the heading, the possible properties and effects of water, which are learned in this specific exercise, are named. These are, for example, pressure and buoyancy for water pressure and water buoyancy. Below that, the specific exercise is described. As visualization, the author creates independently drawn pictures. Below these pictures, there is often a suitable game variant to add to the fun of the exercise. to awaken additional joy with this exercise. Likewise, suitable exercise forms or tips are or tips are mentioned several times.

T1 - Wave-like global economic ripple response to Hurricane Sandy
JF - Environmental research letters : ERL / Institute of Physics
N2 - Tropical cyclones range among the costliest disasters on Earth. Their economic repercussions along the supply and trade network also affect remote economies that are not directly affected. We here simulate possible global repercussions on consumption for the example case of Hurricane Sandy in the US (2012) using the shock-propagation model Acclimate. The modeled shock yields a global three-phase ripple: an initial production demand reduction and associated consumption price decrease, followed by a supply shortage with increasing prices, and finally a recovery phase. Regions with strong trade relations to the US experience strong magnitudes of the ripple. A dominating demand reduction or supply shortage leads to overall consumption gains or losses of a region, respectively. While finding these repercussions in historic data is challenging due to strong volatility of economic interactions, numerical models like ours can help to identify them by approaching the problem from an exploratory angle, isolating the effect of interest. For this, our model simulates the economic interactions of over 7000 regional economic sectors, interlinked through about 1.8 million trade relations. Under global warming, the wave-like structures of the economic response to major hurricanes like the one simulated here are likely to intensify and potentially overlap with other weather extremes.

Their deceptively simple form supports a very rich family of complex solitary patterns. Some of these patterns are also found in the quasi-continuum rendition, but the more intriguing ones, like interlaced pairs of solitary waves, or waves which may reverse their direction either spontaneously or due a collision, are an intrinsic feature of the discrete realm.

T1 - Well-being effects of proactivity through the lens of self-determination theory
N2 - In modern times of evolving globalization and continuous technological developments, organizations are required to respond to ever-changing demands. Therefore, to be successful in today’s highly uncertain environments, organizations need employees to actively search for opportunities, anticipate challenges, and act ahead. In other words, employee proactivity in the workplace represents a highly valuable resource in nowadays organizations. Empirical studies conducted as part of this thesis advance the research on the outcomes of proactivity from the individual perspective. The main contribution of this thesis pertains to revealing several important individual and contextual conditions under which engaging in proactivity will have negative and positive effects on employees’ well-being and their consequent behaviours, as well as shedding light on the unique psychological mechanisms through which these effects unfold. From a practical standpoint, this research underscores the importance of creating work environments that support employees’ autonomous motivation for proactivity and urge organizations and managers to be mindful about the pressures they place on employees to be proactive at work. Besides, this thesis stimulates research efforts aimed at further extending our knowledge of when and how individual proactive behaviours at work will do more good than harm for those who enact them.

T1 - Westernization of self-perception in modern affluent Indonesian school children
T2 - Human Biology and Public Health
N2 - Background
Subjective Social Status is used as an important predictor for psychological and physiological findings, most commonly measured with the MacArthur Scale (Ladder Test). Previous studies have shown that this test fits better in Western cultures. The idea of a social ladder itself and ranking oneself “higher” or “lower” is a concept that accords to the Western thinking.
Objectives
We hypothesize that in a culture where only the elites have adapted to a Western lifestyle, the test results reflect a higher level of accuracy for this stratum. We also expect that self-perception differs per sex.
Sample and Methods
We implemented the Ladder Test in a study of Indonesian schoolchildren aged between 5 and 13 years (boys N = 369, girls N= 364) from non-private and private schools in Kupang in 2020.
Results
Our analysis showed that the Ladder Test results were according to the Western expectations only for the private school, as the Ladder Scores significantly decreased with age (LM: p = 0.04). The Ladder Test results are best explained by “Education Father” for the non-private school pupils (p = 0.01) and all boys (p = 0.04), by “School Grades” for the private school cohort (p = 0.06) and by “Household Score” for girls (p =0.09).
Conclusion
This finding indicates that the concept of ranking oneself “high” or “low” on a social ladder is strongly implicated with Western ideas. A ladder implies social movement by “climbing” up or down. According to that, reflection of self-perception is influenced by culture.

T1 - What do we mean, 'tipping cascade'?
JF - Environmental research letters : ERL
N2 - Based on suggested interactions of potential tipping elements in the Earth's climate and in ecological systems, tipping cascades as possible dynamics are increasingly discussed and studied. The activation of such tipping cascades would impose a considerable risk for human societies and biosphere integrity. However, there are ambiguities in the description of tipping cascades within the literature so far. Here we illustrate how different patterns of multiple tipping dynamics emerge from a very simple coupling of two previously studied idealized tipping elements. In particular, we distinguish between a two phase cascade, a domino cascade and a joint cascade. A mitigation of an unfolding two phase cascade may be possible and common early warning indicators are sensitive to upcoming critical transitions to a certain degree. In contrast, a domino cascade may hardly be stopped once initiated and critical slowing down-based indicators fail to indicate tipping of the following element. These different potentials for intervention and anticipation across the distinct patterns of multiple tipping dynamics should be seen as a call to be more precise in future analyses of cascading dynamics arising from tipping element interactions in the Earth system.

T1 - What Drives Enrollment in Massive Open Online Courses?
BT - Evidences from a French MOOC Platform
JF - EMOOCs 2021
N2 - The goal of this paper is to study the demand factors driving enrollment in massive open online courses. Using course level data from a French MOOC platform, we study the course, teacher and institution related characteristics that influence the enrollment decision of students, in a setting where enrollment is open to all students without administrative barriers. Coverage from social and traditional media done around the course is a key driver. In addition, the language of instruction and the (estimated) amount of work needed to complete the course also have a significant impact. The data also suggests that the presence of same-side externalities is limited. Finally, preferences of national and of international students tend to differ on several dimensions.

T1 - What is the significance of a FRAND license declaration for standard essential patents with regard to their transferability?
BT - news from Germany
JF - GRUR international : journal of European and international IP law
N2 - There has been considerable movement in German licensing law for some years now. Based on the fate of the license in the case of the granting of sub-licenses and in the case of insolvency of one of the contracting parties involved, a number of court decisions have been handed down which mainly deal with the legal nature of licenses and their mode of operation.
Moreover, there is now an internationally significant development in licensing law, namely the increasing independence of patents used in standards, which have increasingly become the subject of economic considerations – and not only of the companies or inventors filing them. zur Fussnote 1 These so-called standard essential patents (SEPs) are the subject of numerous legal disputes and legislative activities and constitute a scientific discourse around the globe.
In 2015, the European Court of Justice (ECJ) created the first leading case for the EU with regard to SEPs in its highly regarded Huawei/ZTE ruling. zur Fussnote 2 Although an abundance of decisions of the courts of first instances are now available, many questions still remain unanswered since the fundamental decision of the ECJ. There is controversy both over the dogmatic classification of the FRAND declaration and the legal consequences of the declaration’s binding effect. It is particularly unclear what happens to the FRAND declaration when the SEP is transferred to a third party and whether, how and to what extent the acquirer is bound by this declaration of the transferor. In a decision that can certainly be described as bold, a Higher Regional Court has now ruled on some of these issues for the first time, thus providing further food for discussion.

T1 - What you apply is not what you learn!
BT - Examining students‘ strategies in German capitalization tasks
JF - Journal of Educational Data Mining
N2 - The ability to spell correctly is a fundamental skill for participating in society and engaging in professional work. In the German language, the capitalization of nouns and proper names presents major difficulties for both native and nonnative learners, since the definition of what is a noun varies according to one’s linguistic perspective. In this paper, we hypothesize that learners use different cognitive strategies to identify nouns. To this end, we examine capitalization exercises from more than 30,000 users of an online spelling training platform. The cognitive strategies identified are syntactic, semantic, pragmatic, and morphological approaches. The strategies used by learners overlap widely but differ by individual and evolve with grade level. The results show that even though the pragmatic strategy is not taught systematically in schools, it is the most widespread and most successful strategy used by learners. We therefore suggest that highly granular learning process data can not only provide insights into learners’ capabilities and enable the creation of individualized learning content but also inform curriculum development.

T1 - When drivers become inhibitors of organic consumption
BT - the need for a multistage view
JF - Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science
N2 - The organic market is characterized by remarkable disparities, and confusion persists about which motives drive organic consumption. To understand them, this research introduces the idea that the same consumer motives can exert different and potentially opposite impacts when organic consumption patterns unfold. The proposed multistage theory of differential effects distinguishes a participation stage, when consumers decide whether to purchase organic at all, and an expenditure stage, when consumers decide about how much of their budget to spend on organic products across purchases. An analysis of shopping patterns of approximately 14,000 households confirms the proposed differential influences: Other-oriented motives (care for others and the environment) support participation but impede sustained expenditures. Only self-oriented motives (hedonism) foster both participation and expenditures. The results pinpoint the need to rethink organic consumption as a stage-specific problem, which opens up new perspectives for managers about an old but persistent problem.

BT - linguistic continuities in German-language writing about Eastern European jews
JF - Naharaim : Zeitschrift für deutsch-jüdische Literatur und Kulturgeschichte
N2 - This article examines the dynamics that allowed the derogatory term "Ostjuden" to reappear in academic writing in post-Holocaust Germany. This article focuses on the period between 1980's and 2000's, complementing earlier studies that focused on the emergence of the term "Ostjuden" and on the complex representations of Eastern European Jews in Imperial and later Weimar Germany. It shows that, despite its well-evidenced discriminatory history, the term "Ostjuden" re-appeared in the scholarly writing in German and has also found its way into German-speaking public history and journalism. This article calls for applying the adjectival term "osteuropaische Juden" (Eastern European Jews), using a term that neither essentializes Eastern European Jews nor presents them in an oversimplified and uniform manner.
