N2  - Gustav Rose (1798-1873) accompanied Humboldt on his journey to Russia. He kept in touch with Humboldt after this expedition until Humboldt died in 1859. The edition of the letter at hand aims at highlighting Rose’s relation to Humboldt and how he influenced the geological and mineralogical part of the Kosmos. It shall also make this impressive historical document accessible to readers by providing illustrating annotations.

N2  - Der fünfteilige Aufsatz zeigt zunächst Ähnlichkeiten zwischen Humboldts Weltbild und dem Weltbild der Pythagoreer auf und untersucht Humboldts Naturbegriff, der beides umfasst: Die natura naturans und die natura naturata. Zahlen sind Mächte des Kosmos. Sie treten insbesondere in der ‚einzig entscheidenden Methode‘ auf, der Methode der Mittelwerte. Diese ermöglicht, das Gesetz zu erkennen, das der Änderung variabler Größen zugrunde liegt. Beispiele bieten die Arithmetica botanica und der Erdmagnetismus. Abschließend wird gezeigt, wie Humboldt die drei möglichen Weltzugänge Denken, Handeln, Anschauen im Begriff Wissen miteinander verband.
N2  - The paper is divided into five sections. It begins by showing the similarity between Humboldt's world view and that of the Pythagoreans. It inquires into Humboldt's notion of nature that comprehends natura naturans and natura naturata as well. Numbers are powers of the univers. They especially occur in the 'only decisive method' that is in the method of mean values. This method makes it possible to recognize the law guiding the changes of variable quantities. The botanical arithmetic and earth magnetism provide examples. Finally the paper explains how Humboldt combined the three possible approaches to the world that is thinking, acting, and regarding by means of the notion of knowledge.

Seit einigen Jahren lässt sich jedoch ein zunehmendes Interesse an Humboldts Schriften feststellen, basierend auf den zahlreichen neuen Editionen, die seitdem entstanden sind. Dazu zählen die deutsche Neuedition der Relation historique (1991), die Editionen des “Humboldt-Projekts” (2004-2006) als Teil der “Anderen Bibliothek”, sowie aktuelle deutsche Editionsprojekte von Asie Centrale und dem Examen critique.
N2  - In Latin America, Alexander von Humboldt was and is known as one of the most famous historic and literary figures; in his own country, though, the acquaintance with his texts has until the 80s been reduced to groups of specialized scholars. Yet, for a couple of years, a growing interest in the works of Humboldt can be noticed, based on numerous new editions, which have been published since. Among others, these are the new edition of the Relation historique (1991), the editions of the „Humboldt Project“ (2004-2006) as part of the „Andere Bibliothek“, as well as current projects on German editions concerning Asie Centrale and the Examen critique.
N2  - Alexander von Humboldt contaba y cuenta en América Latina entre las figuras históricas y literarias más conocidas; en su patria, sin embargo, hasta entrados los años ochenta, el conocimiento de sus textos se limitaba en general a circulos de investigadores especializados. Pero desde un par de años, el interés en los escritos de Humboldt se ha incrementado, fundado en las númerosas nuevas ediciones que han aparecido. Entre ellos figuran la reedición alemana de la Relation historique (1991), las ediciones del «Proyecto Humboldt» (2004-2006) en la «Andere Bibliothek», así como los nuevos proyectos de edición en alemán de Asie Centrale y del Examen critique.

Как настоящий кочевник, он не стремился завоевать или разрушить территорию знания. И потому неудивительно, что он стал одним из основоположников экологического и гео-экологического мышления. Гумбольдт публиковал работы на немецком и французском языках. В своих «Американских дневниках», которые были возвращены в Берлин в ноябре 2013 г., но до сих пор не изучены, Гумбольдт постоянно пере­ходит с немецкого на французский, с латинского на испанский. Автор «Космоса» чужд всякого национализма. Гумбольдт – это номад от науки, и в этом смысле – гражданин мира. Первый теоретик глобализации кочевал от слова к слову, от науки к науке, от мира к миру. Для него постоянное перемещение бы­ло не просто основой научной программы, а образом жизни. Гумбольдт не стремился к специализации в знании, поскольку она ограничивает диалог с другими областями. Его мышление не укладывается в привычные понятия дисциплинарности или междисциплинарности. Оно взыскует нового мира, в котором человечество будет существовать в согласии и свободе.
N2  - The long-term scientific interests of Alexander von Humboldt ranged from anthropology and ancient American studies to geology and geography, climatology and cultural theory, physics and plant geography to language history, volcanology and zoology. As a scientist, he crossed different disciplines and explored new paths of knowledge. Humboldt developed a transdisciplinary and, in the widest sense, nomadic knowledge as a traveller through the sciences. Like a nomad, he did not seek to possess or destroy a territory (of knowledge): no wonder that he became the co-founder of an ecological and geo-ecological thinking. Humboldt wrote and published his works in German as well as in French. In his American Travel Diaries, which returned to Berlin in November 2013, and which are still awaiting their scientific analysis, Humboldt constantly changes between German and French, but also between Latin and Spanish. The author of the Kosmos couldn’t be used for nationalist purposes. Thus, Alexander von Humboldt can be understood as a nomad of science in constant movement, and in this sense as a world citizen. This first theorist of globalization shifted between the words, between the sciences, between the worlds. For him, the greatest possible mobility was not only a scientific program, but also the program of a life – his life. Humboldt wasn’t concerned with any specialization that would lead to a fragmented dialogue with other specialists. He was concerned with a nomadic knowledge, which, thanks to his extensive network of correspondents, always delivered the opportunity to argue from different disciplinary standpoints at the same time. His thinking doesn’t know the limits of interdisciplinary or “disciplined” research oppressing us today, but it rather took aim at the creation of a new world, in which mankind would be able to live together on a planetary scale in freedom and peace.

Dabei bildete die selbstkritische Hinterfragung eigener, kulturell geprägter Forschungsansätze im Kontext jeweils spezifischer Kulturen des Wissens ein entscheidendes Kriterium seines wissenschaftlichen Handelns. Wissenschaft von der Welt ist bei Humboldt verbunden mit dem Anspruch, die Welt in ihren komplexen Zusammenhängen neu zu denken: transdisziplinär, interkulturell, kosmopolitisch. So verstanden ist Humboldt keineswegs der "letzte Universalgelehrte", sondern vielmehr Pionier und Vertreter einer neuen Wissenschaftskonzeption, deren Potentiale bis heute noch nicht ausgeschöpft sind.

Diese Sichtweise hat sich in der Rezeption gehalten, während die Materialien, die Dove beschrieb, in Vergessenheit gerieten. Der Artikel stellt anhand ausgewählter Beispiele die Vorlesungsmanuskripte Humboldts und Nachschriften seiner Zuhörer in ihrem Zusammenhang vor, entwickelt die These von der Eigenständigkeit der sogenannten Kosmos-Vorträge gegenüber dem fünfbändigen Kosmos und umreißt die wichtigsten Ziele und Inhalte der geplanten digitalen Edition.
N2  - Alexander von Humboldt’s famous Kosmos-Lectures, presented in 1827/28, constitute a major benchmark as well as a blind spot in the reception of his work. Numerous interpretations are based on merely two uncommented textbook editions of notes made by anonymous listeners. Humboldt’s own lecture manuscripts, rediscovered in 2009, promise to extend the sources of interpretation. Already in 1872, Alfred Dove gave a hint to the existence of these papers. At that time, he regarded them as the nucleus of the later published Kosmos. This perception persisted up to recent times, while the existence of the papers on which Dove alluded, fell into oblivion. The article presents examples of Humboldt’s own lecture manuscripts together with notes made by his listeners. It develops the thesis of the autonomy of Humboldt’s Kosmos-Lectures towards the Kosmos, but at the same time points to aspects of continuity between the two. Furthermore, it will outline some major ambitions and contents of the project of their digital edition.
N2  - Les cours ‘Kosmos’ donnés en 1827/28 par Alexander von Humboldt, bien que mal connus jusqu’alors, représentent un repère canonique dans la réception de son œuvre. De nombreuses interprétations sont basées uniquement sur les transcriptions non commentés de deux auditeurs anonymes. Ses manuscrits personnels retrouvés en 2009 promettent d’élargir cette faible source. Alfred Dove y avait déjà fait référence en 1872 et les interprétait à l’époque comme le germe de la rédaction du Kosmos. Ce point de vue a persisté dans la réception, alors que les sources que Dove décrivait tombaient dans l’oubli. L’article présente les manuscrits de Humboldt et les notes de ses auditeurs dans leur contexte à l’aide d’exemples choisis ; il développe la thèse de l’indépendance des cours ‘Kosmos’ par rapport au Kosmos en cinq tomes et résume les objectifs et le contenu de l’édition numérique prévue.
