The divine is replaced by the whispers of the demon, which Klossowski experiences as « la complicité d'une force "démonique" » in the creation of his artworks. The Diana myth becomes a parable for the act of artistic creation. Sexuality, understood as the primordial ground of creative force that shapes the signe unique, the phantasm, shifts metaphysics to « phantasmaphysics » (Foucault), in which the mystery of the divine is exposed as a delusion (Wahnbild). While reference grammars treat complementizers with a determiner as the standard option, previous diachronic research has shown that determiner-less complementizers actually predate relative complementizers with a determiner. Additionally, Yucatecan Spanish has been in long-standing contact with Yucatec Maya. Relative complementation in Yucatec Maya differs from that in Spanish (at least) in that the non-complex complementizer tu’ux (‘where’) is generally the only option for locative complementation. The paper explores monolingual and bilingual data from Yucatecan Spanish to discuss the question whether the determiner-less and bare que relative complementizers in our data constitute a historic remnant or a dialectal recast, possibly (but not necessarily) due to language contact. Although our pilot study may not answer these far-reaching questions, it does reveal two separate, but intertwined developments: (i) a generally increased rate of bare que relative complementation, across both monolingual speakers of Spanish and Spanish Maya bilinguals, compared to other Spanish varieties, and (ii) a preference for donde at the cost of other locative complementizer constructions in the bilingual group. Our analysis thus reveals intriguing differences between the complementizer preferences of monolingual and bilingual speakers, suggesting that different variational patterns caused by different (socio-)linguistic factors can co-develop in parallel in one and the [same] region. N2 - The beginning could be two images of Vallejo in Paris. The first is extracted from the most recent biography of the Peruvian writer, César Vallejo: A Literary Biography, by the British Hispanist Stephen Hart. Hart reports that in his early years in Paris, Vallejo's situation was so precarious that when he traveled by train he avoided getting off the wagon until he had come to a complete stop so as not to wear his only pair of shoes. On one occasion, going with some friends and running into a sidewalk flooded by the rupture of a hydrant, Vallejo preferred to turn around and say goodbye to his friends rather than risk ruining his shoes by crossing the puddle (108). I would like to contrast this image, which synthesizes the economic hardship that marked Vallejo's life in Paris and in general the fifteen years that he spent in Europe since he left Peru in 1923 until his death in 1938, with the image proposed by a photograph (see Fig. 1). It is a well-known photograph: taken in 1929 by Juan Domingo Córdoba during a summer walk through Versailles, it has become a kind of emblematic image, reproduced in numerous reissues of Vallejo's work. In fact, what always caught my attention in this image is the pose. The pose, and the elegance of the outfit. Consider for a moment the dapperness of the suit, the flirtatious handkerchief that peeks out of the top pocket of the jacket, the ring set with a black agate on the middle finger, the felt hat left loose on the leg, the stately cane — or the tie tied in a bow tie that appears in another contemporary photograph (see Fig. 2). If the elegance of that pose had to be defined in one word, I would say that it is the pose of a dandy. A dandy with worn out shoes. In Vallejo's multiple trans-lands, and in particular in the fifteen years that he lived in Paris, the economic precariousness of the emigrant and the cosmopolitanism of the educated traveler coexist. My reading situates the question of autofiction in this author in the context of his conflictive dialogue with the group Origenes, tracing the mixture of narrative and lyrical modes of autofiguration in Garcia Vega's unique project: rewriting both Proust's autobiographic narrative and Lezama's neobaroque poetics. In our contribution, we present two recently constructed corpora covering the period of Classical French, sermo and apwcf. We present these corpora in terms of their genre characteristics on a communicative-functional and socio-pragmatic level. Based on the observation that, both in sermo and apwcf, dsas frequently occur together with terms of address, we analyse and manually code a sample based on this co-occurrence, and we compare the results with regard to special features in the individual corpora. The emerging patterns show a clear correspondence between socio-pragmatic factors and the linguistic means used to realise dsas. XXXIII, 142). En conséquence, Botticelli y renonce également. The author, Joseph de Maimieux (1753–1820), is said to have coined the term pasigraphie. With the invention of pasigraphy, Maimieux pursued the goal of creating a conceptually based writing system that could be applied to all languages. In this way, a text written in this script could be read in all languages. The pasigraphic system is based on an a priori system of conceptual classification to which written characters are assigned. It is therefore initially an exclusively written language, on which Maimieux two years later also built a spoken language with the Pasilalie. The first arguments against the endeavour represented by the Pasigraphie were brought forward by Maimieux' immediate contemporaries, the ideologues. These objections were re-affirmed in particular by Johann Severin Vater. The decisive difference between Maimieux and his critics lies in the determination of the role of signs in the formation of concepts. While for Maimieux the signs only name the finished concepts, his critics argued that signs have a function in the constitution of the concepts. A universal language is therefore ultimately not possible, since there are no universal concepts and the individual languages lead to different conceptual structures. N2 - In recent years, literary criticism has begun to emphasize the linkage between Góngoras way of writing and epic or the so-called ‘heroic’ set of subgenres (Mercedes Blanco, Jesús Ponce Cárdenas). This new angle implies a considerable shift in perspective compared to the reception of Góngora by the Generación del 27 and especially Dámaso Alonso. Limiting itself to the Soledades, the present article explores the consequences of this new paradigm, beyond Góngora as a mere ‘lyricist’. From a methodological point of view, we will not rely on the idealist or Marxist dialectic of form and content (the ‘ideology of form’ of Fredric Jameson), which we consider an anachronism when referring to Góngora. Instead, the early Roland Barthes provides an alternative by suggesting the ‘commitment to form’ and attempting to escape the dialectic of form and content through a ‘gesture’ of écriture. Thus, the present article postulates that not enough critical attention has been paid to the ‘gesture’ of Góngoras writing (écriture) in the Soledades: a writing that pirates the language of epic. Wilhelm von Humboldt argued that every language shaped the world-view of its speakers, but he also saw a possibility to improve human knowledge in the co-action of languages. The idea of linguistic relativity can be found in John Locke’s statement that words interpose themselves between our understandings and the truth which it would contemplate and apprehend. In the 18th century, we can find formulations that our language accustoms us to arrange our ideas in a specific way, that some languages are more suitable for certain kinds of thought, or that metaphors have significant influence on peoples’ thought. In the 20thcentury the Neo-Humboldtian school revitalised the idea of an influence of language on thought in a reductionist way. At the end of the 20th century, some authors, for example John J. Gumperz and Stephen C. Levinson, tried to rethink linguistic relativity and to prove it by empirical results. Construcciones de probabilidad y el uso de los modos JF - Romanica Olomucensia N2 - This paper is concerned with constructions that express probability and their interaction with the indicative and subjunctive mood, as well as with other contextual elements. In detail, the paper deals with the constructions [sin duda + indicative/subjunctive], [tal vez + indicative/subjunctive], [probablemente + indicative/subjunctive] and [posiblemente + indicative/subjunctive]. In their interaction with mood, the constructions are understood as different microconstructions. For example, [sin duda + indicative] and [sin duda + subjunctive] are seen as different microconstructions of the superordinate mesoconstruction [modal construction (of probability) + verb]. In a qualitative analysis examples from the CREA, CORPES XXI, and CdE corpora are examined regarding the interaction of [expression of probability] + [mood]. Following the Principle of No Synonymy of Grammatical Forms, the analysis confirms that the use of mood additionally influences the expressed degree of probability of the constructions. For instance, while probablemente generally expresses a slightly higher probability than posiblemente, a fine-tuned analysis shows that the expressed degrees of probability of [probablemente + subjunctive] and [posiblemente + indicative] are highly similar. This is also often confirmed by further contextual information. In summary, the paper shows that Cognitive Construction Grammar is a very suitable background against which to investigate modal phenomena, as cognitive approaches generally deal with the ways in which language users conceptualize the world from their own point of view, and as expressions of modality, more precisely, probability, are also closely related to speakers’ attitudes or perspectives. BT - Giambattista Vico and the Construction of the Pythagorean Myth JF - Philological Encounters Special Issus: Early Modern 'New Sciences': Inquiries into Ibn Khaldun and Giambattista Vico N2 - In the nineteenth century, the reception of Giambattista Vico’s writings came along with nationalist interpretations of his Scienza Nuova as an ‘Italian Science’. This tendency was based upon an increased examination of the role that the philosopher Pythagoras and his Italian school of Croton played in Vico’s hierarchical conception of the ancient Greek and Italian civilizations. Writers, archaeologists and historians used the New Science as a metonymic reference work for their own nationalist concepts by updating the Pythagorean myth in accordance with relevant narratives of exclusive genealogies concerning an ancient Italian wisdom. These narratives follow tendencies in Vico’s own writings that were quoted strategically and mixed with further interpretations of the Scienza Nuova as reliable testimonial for a glorious Italian history. A theological poet characterized by deeper insight into the secrets of nature and some parts of the divine providence, Pythagoras gains his special position in Vico’s general conception of knowledge. Movement and transformations are the basic principles in which the melody of prose expresses itself as a language in and as motion. Although based in Brazilian culture, Rosa shows the conviviality of different logics which are not reduced to one myth of the Brazilian people, but produce multiple ways of co-existence between different life-forms and culture narratives. The translingual title “Sagarana” already alludes to the transitions between two languages, regions, and cultures: the Icelandic “saga-” and the Tupic-Word “rana” which means “similar” or “alike.” The interpretation figures out the correlation of different provenances (“Herkünfte”) which emerge from Rosa’s craft of storytelling. In its center, the Sertão arises as a region of nature whose forces are connected with the life of human beings. As fractal of the world, it symbolizes Brazilian relations as a world of its own and at the same time as a part of the world of others. From this point of view the essay turns world literature upside down: it emphasizes on the one hand that the epoch of world literature since Goethe has come to an end and that the meridian has shifted to Latin America. On the other hand it can be observed that the lusophonic world between Brazil and Angola, Portugal and Kap Verde develops new perspectives on literatures of the world beyond the fixed coordinations of periphery and center. Rosa’s ways of world making already shift the perspective from the local to the global as a miniatured model of a universe which reveals interpretations of a better understanding of the world as world fractals.
