N2 - For a week, data of N =101 employees with different professions was collected with the Experience Sampling Method (N = 4603 measurements). These data included flow-experience, happiness/satisfaction and goal adjustment of current activities. The data were analysed with GLMM. Flow-experience was measured with all components (FKS) and they confirmed the "paradox of work" (i.e., flow-scores are higher during work but scores for happiness/satisfaction are higher during spare time). During work, participants activities were more often directed towards reaching a goal. The effects of goal adjustment on flow vs. happiness/satisfaction differed significantly. During work goal adjustment had a strong positive effect on flow, but not on happiness/satisfaction. During leisure time goal adjustment had even a negative effect on happiness/satisfaction but a positive on flow. The "paradox of work" could be partially attributed to the stronger goal adjustment during work. Life course theory and related concepts of 'time,' 'normative patterns,' 'order and disorder,' and 'discontinuities' are used to inform the analyses. Data from the Paths on Life's Way (Paths) project in British Columbia, Canada and the German Pathways from Late Childhood to Adulthood (LifE) which span 28 and 33 years, respectively, are employed to examine life trajectories from leaving school to around age 45. Sequence analysis and cluster analyses portray both within and between country differences - and in particular gender differences - in educational attainment, employment, and other activities across the life course which has an impact on ultimate labour market participation and income levels. 'Normative' life courses that follow a traditional order correspond with higher levels of full-time work and higher incomes; in Germany more so than Canada, these clusters are male dominated. Clusters characterised by 'disordered' and 'discontinuous' life courses in both countries are female dominated and associated with lower income levels. N2 - There is no doubt that work, both from the perspective of the individual and society, is of significant relevance to human life. Therefore, research on this relation is of growing interest in the field of work and organizational psychology. This study analyzed a process model, in which need-supportive work conditions have positive effects on psychological well-being (eudaimonia) mediated by empowerment, affective commitment, alienation, and proactive behavior. The process model of this thesis was built on the self-determination theory (SDT) model in the workplace. For the analysis, I collected and assessed cross-sectional data from a convenience sample of 172 working adults from Western society. Hypotheses were tested using hierarchical regression analysis and the PROCESS macro for SPSS. Results show significant positive effects of autonomy and task identity on psychological well-being. Furthermore, the hypotheses about the mediation of these effects were supported. As hypothesized, the effects of autonomy and task identity on psychological well-being were serially mediated via the following paths: (1) Autonomy and task identity positively influenced empowerment, which in turn exercised a negative effect on alienation, which then negatively affected psychological well-being. (2) Autonomy and task identity positively influenced empowerment, which in turn exercised a positive effect on proactive behavior, which then positively affected psychological well-being. The data did not show the hypothesized mediating role of affective commitment. Yet, testing of post-hoc assumptions about three mediators operating in serial showed a weak, indirect effect of autonomy and task identity on psychological well-being via (1) empowerment, affective commitment, and alienation, and (2) empowerment, affective commitment, and proactive behavior. This thesis contributes to the clarification of SDT as a theory of work psychology. It supports the role of SDT as a useful theory of describing the formation process of well-being. Moreover, the thesis extends research about the antecedents and consequences of empowerment, affective commitment, alienation, and proactive behavior on the one hand, and it underlines the relation of those concepts with SDT on the other. At last, I discuss various theoretical implications and draw conclusions for practitioners of today and the society of tomorrow. N2 - The perceived social support at work is an important variable in occupational research and was investigated in different jobs. First a questionnaire was developed and evaluated to measure perceived social support from supervisors and co-workers (N=936). Second the buffering effect of perceived social support was examined and the relationship between personality (the Work-related Behaviour and Experience Patterns) and social support was explored. Data were collected from teachers, nurses, policemen and firemen (N=1.041). Finally the results were used to construct an intervention to improve the mental health of teachers (N=207). Results support the buffering effect of perceived social support from supervisor and co-workers. The Work-related Behaviour and Experience Patterns play an important role in perceiving social support. Outcomes of the intervention indicated that the program enhanced the individual health of teachers. Its aim is to show that the thinking of these ‘founding fathers’ of sociology can furnish valuable insight into the current issue of the corrosion of character in contemporary post-Fordist society. The concept of work still represents one of the major factors determining modern individuals’ ability (or inability) to formulate personal, stable identities that enable them to become fully socialized. Both Simmel and Weber make reference to a common theoretical background that views the human being as a creature with originally rational potential, who is faced with the task of becoming a personality by means of consciously chosen life behaviour: This is evident in the parallelism between Simmel’s interest in the concept of ‘style of life’ (Der Stil des Lebens) and Weber’s research on the ‘life conduct’ (Lebensführung) that arose in Western rationalistic culture. Sixteen elite (age: 23 +/- 3 years) and 11 sub-elite (age: 16 +/- 1 years) athletes participated in study 1 and 14 male sub-elite judo athletes participated in study 2. Discriminative validity and test-retest reliability of sport-specific parameters (mechanical work, maximal force) were assessed during pulling movements with and without tsukuri (kuzushi). Ecological validity of muscle activity was determined by performing pulling movements using the ergometer without tsukuri and during the same movements against an opponent. In both conditions, electromyographic activity of trunk (e.g., m. erector spinae) and upper limb muscles (e.g., m. biceps brachii) were assessed separately for the lifting and pulling arm. Elite athletes showed mostly better mechanical work, maximal force, and power (0.12 <= d <= 1.80) compared with sub-elite athletes. The receiver operating characteristic analysis revealed acceptable validity of the JERGo(C) system to discriminate athletes of different performance levels predominantly during kuzushi without tsukuri (area under the curve = 0.27-0.90). Moreover, small-to-medium discriminative validity was found to detect meaningful performance changes for mechanical work and maximal force. The JERGo(C) system showed small-to-high relative (ICC = 0.37-0.92) and absolute reliability (SEM = 10.8-18.8%). Finally, our analyses revealed acceptable correlations (r = 0.41-0.88) between muscle activity during kuzushi performed with the JERGo(C) system compared with a judo opponent. Our findings indicate that the JERGo(C) system is a valid and reliable test instrument for the assessment and training of judo-specific pulling kinetics particularly during kuzushi movement without tsukuri.
