N2  - The paper investigates the question of sustainability of capacity building initiatives by reporting about the multiplication training in the frame of DIES NMT Programme on quality assurance in Uganda and how it could make use of the social capital within the existing quality assurance network to sustain and address challenges during its implementation. The purpose of the article is to explore the nature of networking (social and institutional) which was established by the Ugandan Universities Quality Assurance Forum (UUQAF) and share the strategies used in this training experience for future sustainable capacity building training initiatives in emerging economies. The paper employed a qualitative research method to describe and analyse the training framework based on primary and secondary documents.

N2  - Higher education institutions in Guinea face many challenges, including reporting responsibilities, globalisation, and massification. Institutional evaluations of higher education and research institutions in 2013 could not initiate the implementation of change processes within the institutions. Recently, however, various initiatives have been started to change this situation with the purpose to sensitise and raise awareness and capabilities for quality assurance structures in Guinean HEIs. So far, the emphasis has been put on quality enhancement in higher education, especially on teaching evaluation, curriculum development, as well as on establishing quality assurance structures. This article gives an overview of the state of play and takes stock of the activities that have been initiated to set up quality assurance mechanisms in higher education and research institutions, and presents perspectives for further development of the quality approach in Guinea. The project ‘Quality Assurance Multiplication 2017-2018’ serves as an example to describe approaches and activities in setting up stable quality assurance structures, and to strengthen and raise awareness for a ‘quality culture’.

N2  - Les établissements d’enseignement supérieur en Guinée sont confrontés à de nombreux défis, notamment les responsabilités en matière de rapports, la mondialisation et la massification. Les évaluations institutionnelles des établissements d’enseignement supérieur (EES) et de recherche en 2013 n’ont pas permis d’initier la mise en oeuvre des processus de changement au sein des établissements. Récemment, diverses initiatives ont été lancées pour changer cette situation dans le but de sensibiliser et de renforcer la prise de conscience et les capacités des structures d’assurance qualité dans les EES guinéennes. Jusqu’à présent, l’accent a été mis sur l’amélioration de la qualité dans l’enseignement supérieur, en particulier sur l’évaluation de l’enseignement, l’élaboration des programmes d’études, ainsi que sur la mise en place de structures d’assurance qualité. Cet article donne un aperçu de l’état des lieux et fait le point sur les activités qui ont été lancées pour mettre en place des mécanismes d’assurance qualité dans les établissements d’enseignement supérieur et de recherche, et présente les perspectives de développement de l›approche qualité en Guinée. Le projet «Multiplication de l’assurance qualité 2017 – 2018» sert d’exemple pour décrire les approches et les activités de mise en place de structures stables d’assurance qualité, et pour renforcer et sensibiliser à une «culture de la qualité».

N2  - Whilst providing a framework for learning and scientific emancipation, a proposal writing training is confronted with various organisational and didactic challenges, which influence the achievement of the set training objectives. Based on observations made during the workshops for proposal writing organised in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo, as part of the NMT Programme, the article raises two main questions: (a) How could these challenges be overcome and successfully addressed in the training? (b) What is the level of learning outcomes of the participants at the end of the training? The article shows that the success of the training lays in the relevance of the employed training approaches. The use of a participatory approach encouraged constructive exchanges between participants, trainers, and experts, and enabled all participants to finalise coherent projects to apply for national and international funding.

N2  - Tout en offrant un cadre d’apprentissage et d’émancipation scientifique, l’atelier d’écriture des projets oppose différents défis, d’ordre organisationnel et didactique, dont les approches influent sur son déploiement et sur l’atteinte des objectifs assignés. Comment s’y prendre pour contourner ces défis et accomplir avec succès l’implémentation de la formation proposée ? Quelle en est l’incidence sur la qualité des acquisitions des participants au terme de la formation ? Le présent article répond à ces questions, partant des observations faites lors des formations organisées à Kinshasa (République démocratique du Congo) dans le cadre du programme National Multiplication Training (NMT). Il en ressort que le succès d’un atelier réside dans la pertinence des approches mises en oeuvre. Le recours à l’approche participative a favorisé les échanges constructifs entre participants, formateurs et experts, et a permis à tous les participants de finaliser des projets cohérents, pour postuler aux financements nationaux et internationaux.

N2  - This article collected the results of a qualitative study focused on Colombian Higher Education Institutions’ representatives partaking in the training ‘Internationalisation for Peacebuilding 2018’. The selected Higher Education Institutions and representatives were all located in regions acutely affected by the Colombian armed conflict, now experiencing multifaceted challenges and opportunities in a post-conflict scenario. Interviews with participants of the training were conducted to analyse the skills acquired and to identify possible improvements brought about by the training at the institutions. The article further identifies specific needs of the institutions, to be taken into account for future courses on internationalisation for higher education institutions.

N2  - During the National Multiplication Training in Kenya in 2018, participants raised concerns about attrition, completion rates and quality of PhD programmes in Kenya’s public universities. This led the authors of this article to further examine the question of PhD completion rates. Available data underlined that PhD students across various disciplines in Kenya’s public universities take unnecessarily long to complete their studies due to a myriad of factors that are related to their supervisors, university guidelines for post-graduate studies, or the students themselves. This article examines inertia areas along the PhD training pathway at three public universities in Kenya and provides suggestions on structural and operational changes universities must make to shorten completion periods.

N2  - Deans at Institutions of Higher Education are seldom recipients of effective or specific professional management training, institutional mentorship, and coaching despite an increasing demand on them to play a more dynamic leadership role in the face of ever-changing local and global challenges. To address this deficiency, the inaugural Malaysian Chapter of the International Deans’ Course (MyIDC) was held in three parts over 2019 and 2020. In this paper, findings related to feedback on the programme are presented and discussed. Responses from the participants from two sets of surveys, and written feedback provided by two IDC international trainers involved in MyIDC were analysed. These reveal potential areas of improvement for the forthcoming MyIDC programme, such as in terms of planning and organisation, duration, content, and delivery. The article explores the lessons learnt from the MyIDC 2019/2020 training programme and discusses the improvements that can be made arising from the feedback received.

N2  - Entre las impresiones determinantes que recibió el joven Humboldt está en primer lugar su relación con Georg Forster, circunnavigador del mundo, escritor y mas tarde revolucionario. Aquí se toca la historia de las relaciones entre ambos subrayando previamente lo que Forster significó para Humboldt. Los escritos y la personalidad de Forster lo impactaron emocionalmente; él consideró a Forster como un ejemplo en la observación y comparación de fenómenos geográficos, naturales y sociales, pero también por su tendencia a descubrir leyes; Forster estimuló a Humboldt incursionar en el campo de ciencias diversas; también en el arte de descripción literaria de la naturaleza, del paisaje y sus moradores se sentía la influencia de Forster; finalmente, Forster fue uno de los representantes más importantes del pensamiento político-ideológico progresista con el cual entró en contacto el joven Humboldt y el cual, por su toma de partido en favor de la Revolución Francesa, así como contra la esclavitud y la discriminación racial, ejerció un poderoso influjo sobre él. Aunque era inoportuno declararse en favor del jacobino Forster, Humboldt adhirió públicamente a su amigo y maestro subrayando su “igual dirección en opiniones políticas” respecto a Forster.
N2  - Unter den prägenden Eindrücken, die der junge A. v. Humboldt empfing, steht an erster Stelle seine Beziehung zu Georg Forster, dem Weltumsegler, Schriftsteller und späteren Revolutionär. Hier wird neben der Geschichte ihrer Beziehungen vor allem Forsters Bedeutung für Humboldt behandelt. Forsters Schriften und seine Persönlichkeit beeindruckten Humboldt. Er sah in dem Forscher ein Vorbild bei der Beobachtung und dem Vergleich geographischer, naturkundlicher und sozialer Erscheinungen, aber auch im Bestreben, Gesetzmäßigkeiten aufzudecken. Forster regte Humboldt an, in verschiedene Wissenschaftsgebiete einzudringen; in Humboldts literarischen Beschreibung der Natur, der Landschaft und ihrer Bewohner wird der Einfluss des Älteren deutlich. Forster war einer der wichtigsten Vertreter progressiven politischen Denkens und der Parteinahme für die Ideale der Französische Revolution, mit dem der junge Humboldt in Berührung kam. So beeinflusste ihn auch Forsters Haltung gegen Sklaverei und Rassendiskriminierung. Humboldt identifizierte sich nie mit dem Jakobiner Forster, bekannte sich aber öffentlich zu seinem Freund und Lehrer, indem er die „gleiche Richtung politischer Meinungen“ hervorhob.
N2  - It was the relationship with the circumnavigator, writer, and (later) revolutionary Georg Forster that had the greatest impact on the young Alexander von Humboldt. This paper is dealing with the history of their relationship and pays special attention to Forster’s influence on Humboldt. Forster’s writings and his personality influenced Humboldt greatly. He took Forster’s approach as a model for his own observations and comparisons of geographical, natural, and social phenomena, but also applied them in his efforts to discover natural laws. Forster encouraged Humboldt to study various fields of natural sciences and his influence is evident in Humboldt’s way of describing nature, landscapes and their inhabitants. As a passionate supporter of the French Revolution, Forster was one of the most important representatives of progressive political thinking with whom the young Humboldt came into contact. Forster’s stand against slavery and racial discrimination had a strong influence on Humboldt as well. Though unlike Forster, Humboldt did never identify himself as a Jacobin, he referred to him publicly as his friend and teacher by pointing out “common directions in their political opinions”.

N2  - Im Jahre 1789 hatte Alexander von Humboldt als Student in Göttingen mit großem Enthusiasmus ein Manuskript zur „Weberei der Alten“ verfasst. Es war das Ziel seiner Studie, die Technologie und die Terminologie der antiken Weberei zu erfassen und beide Gebiete vereint darzustellen. Dieses Manuskript ist nicht veröffentlicht worden und gilt als verschollen. Alexander von Humboldt hatte offenbar neue Erkenntnisse gewonnen, denen er so große Bedeutung beimaß, dass er den Verlust seines Manuskriptes noch über 50 Jahre nach dessen Abfassung bedauerte. Humboldt benennt glücklicherweise in überlieferten Briefen verschiedene Grundgedanken seiner damaligen Arbeit. In der vorliegenden Studie wird unter Einbeziehung aktueller technikhistorischer Erkenntnisse nachgewiesen, dass der junge Alexander von Humboldt das für alle Webtechniken gültige Prinzip in seinen Grundzügen erkannt hatte.
N2  - En 1789 Alexander von Humboldt, aún como estudiante en Göttingen, escribió con gran entusiasmo un manuscrito sobre la “Tejeduría en la Antigüedad Clásica”. El objetivo de su estudio era comprender la tecnología y la terminología en uso referente al arte de tejer, para presentar ambas áreas en su relación. Este manuscrito no ha sido publicado y se considera perdido. Al parecer, Alexander von Humboldt había adquirido nuevas ideas que iban más allá del objetivo original de su investigación, las cuales consideraba tan importantes, que lamentó perder su manuscrito más de 50 años después de haberlo redactado. Afortunadamente, Humboldt enumeró varias de las ideas principales de su trabajo en cartas. En el presente estudio, que incluye conocimientos actuales de la historia de la técnica, se demuestra que el joven Alexander von Humboldt había reconocido el principio básico de generalización que se aplica a todas las técnicas de la tejeduría.
N2  - When Alexander von Humboldt was studying at Göttingen University, in 1789 he wrote an essay on “Weaving in the Ancient World”, a subject he tackled with great enthusiasm. His aim was to understand both, the technology and the terminology of ancient weaving. However, the essay has never been published and is believed to have been lost. He considered his findings to be so important that he regretted this loss even 50 years later. Fortunately, in some of his letters, Alexander von Humboldt mentioned the basic concepts which he wrote about in his essay on weaving. In the present study, including todayʼs knowledge of technical history, it is demonstrated that the young Alexander had recognized the general principles that apply to all weaving techniques.

N2  - Though Humboldt’s travels to the Americas have been analyzed from a wide range of viewpoints, there are specific aspects that still await further investigation. Little is written about Humboldt in the field, specifically how he moved between different locations and simultaneously measured and mapped places and phenomena. The aim of this article is to discuss the triad movement-measure-ment-map that led to the development of specific practices of knowledge building on the move. Humboldt’s search for the connections between the watersheds of the Orinoco and the Amazon rivers and the resulting maps and drawings are used as an example to point out his cartographic impulse in his quest to understand and explain the physical world.
N2  - Obwohl Humboldts Reisen nach Amerika unter ver-schiedenen Gesichtspunkten analysiert wurden, gibt es bestimmte Aspekte, die noch weiter untersucht werden müssen. Wenig ist jedoch über Humboldt im Feld geschrieben, insbesondere darüber, wie er sich zwischen verschiedenen Orten bewegte und gleichzeitig Lokalitäten und Phänomene maß und kartierte. Das Ziel dieses Artikels ist es, die Triade Bewegung-Messung-Landkarte zu diskutieren, die zur Entwicklung spezifischer Praktiken des „Wissenschaffens“ in Bewegung führte. Humboldts Suche nach den Verbindungen zwischen den Wassereinzugsgebieten des Orinoco und des Amazo-nasflusses sowie die daraus resultierenden Karten und Zeichnungen dienen als Beispiel, um seinen kartografischen Impuls bei seinem Bestreben, die physische Welt zu verstehen und zu erklären, hervorzuheben.
N2  - Aunque los viajes de Humboldt a las Américas han sido analizados desde una amplia gama de puntos de vista, hay aspectos específicos que aún esperan una mayor investigación. Poco se escribe sobre Humboldt en el campo, específicamente cómo se movió entre diferentes lugares y simultáneamente midió y cartografió lugares y fenómenos. El objetivo de este artículo es discutir la tríada movimien-to-medición-mapa que condujo al desarrollo de prácticas específicas de construcción de conocimiento en movimiento. La investigación de Humboldt de las conexiones entre las cuencas hidrográficas del Orinoco y del Amazonas y los mapas y dibujos resultantes se utiliza como un ejemplo para señalar su impulso cartográfico en su búsqueda para comprender y explicar el mundo físico.

N2  - In dem vorliegenden Beitrag geht der Verfasser von seinen Gesprächen aus, die er mit seinem Kollegen Michaeler in der Zeit von 1976 bis 1985 an der Universidad Incca de Colombia führen konnte. Dabei bezieht er die ihm – von Michaeler vor seinem Tod – übergebenen biografischen Daten mit ein. Insgesamt sollen die Ausführungen zum Weiterdenken anregen. Der Beitrag geht von der vielfältigen klimatischen und archäologischen Landschaft Kolumbiens aus und verbindet dies mit der damaligen Wissenschaftskonzeption an der Universidad Incca de Colombia. In diesem Kontext wird u. a. auf das Werk von Ernst Bloch „Das Prinzip Hoffnung“ und die Arbeit von Hans Jonas „Das Prinzip Verantwortung“ Bezug genommen. Für Michaeler waren die Werke der Brüder Humboldt, die Schrift Kants „Zum ewigen Frieden“, die Dialektik Hegels und die Gesellschaftstheorie von Marx in der Universitätsausbildung unverzichtbar.
N2  - En este artículo el autor toma como punto de partida las conversaciones que tuvo con su colega Michaeler en la Universidad Incca de Colombia entre 1976 y 1985. Tiene en cuenta los datos biográficos que le entregó Michaeler antes de su muerte. En general, las explicaciones tienen la intención de estimular la reflexión. La contribución toma como punto de partida el diverso paisaje climático y arqueológico de Colombia y lo vincula con la concepción de la ciencia en ese momento en la Universidad Incca de Colombia. En este contexto, se hace referencia a la obra de Ernst Bloch “El principio de la esperanza” y a la obra de Hans Jonas “El principio de la responsabilidad”. Para Michaeler, las obras de los hermanos Humboldt, el “Zum ewigen Frieden” de Kant, la dialéctica de Hegel y la teoría social de Marx eran indispensables en la educación universitaria.
N2  - In this article the author takes as his starting point the discussions, he had with his colleague Michaeler at the Universidad Incca de Colombia between 1976 and 1985. He takes the biographical data handed over to him by Michaeler before his death into account. All in all, the explanations are intended to stimulate further thinking. The contribution takes Colombiaʼs diverse climatic and archaeological landscape as its starting point and links this to the conception of science at that time at the Universidad Incca de Colombia. In this context, reference is made to the work of Ernst Bloch “The Principle of Hope” and the work of Hans Jonas “The Principle of Responsibility”. For Michaeler, the works of the Humboldt brothers, Kantʼs “Zum ewigen Frieden”, the dialectic of Hegel and the social theory of Marx were indispensable in university education.

N2  - Auf seiner Russlandexpedition von 1829 wurde Alexander von Humboldt fast durchgängig von Sicherheitskräften der Regierung begleitet. Die Forschung wies dieser Eskorte bisher vor allem eine Kontrollfunktion zu. Im Folgenden wird gezeigt, dass Humboldts bewaffnete Begleiter wahrscheinlich weniger der Überwachung, als der Absicherung seiner Expedition dienten. Der Artikel wirft dafür einen Blick auf die Sicherheitslage im Umfeld der Russlandreise, die Eskorte an sich sowie ihre letztendlich eng begrenzten Möglichkeiten zur Kontrolle des Wissenschaftlers. An Material stehen dafür unter anderem Humboldts Reisekorrespondenz, der Reisebericht seines Gefährten Gustav Rose und die erst jüngst veröffentlichten Tagebücher Christian Gottfried Ehrenbergs zur Verfügung.
N2  - During his expedition to Russia in 1829, Alexander von Humboldt was almost constantly accompanied by government security forces. Studies in the past have usually seen this escort as an attempt to control the liberal researcher. This article shows that his armed company was probably meant to protect Humboldt rather than to supervise him. Therefore, the article analyzes potential threats on the route of the expedition, how the escort adapted to them and how far the guards would have been able to control him anyway. The most important sources are Humboldt's written communication, the travel account by his friend Gustav Rose and the recently published diaries of his companion Christian Gottfried Ehrenberg.
N2  - Durante su expedición a Rusia en 1829, Alexander von Humboldt estuvo acompañado casi en todo momento por fuerzas de seguridad del gobierno. La literatura científica interpreta este dato, normalmente, como un intento de control hacia el investigador liberal. En contraposición, el presente artículo sugiere que la compañía armada de Humboldt servía probablemente más como protección del viajero. Para demostrarlo analiza las posibles amenazas que podían haber sucedido en el camino de la expedición, las reacciones de la escolta y por la otra parte sus limitadas capacidades de control. Los correos del mismo Humboldt resultan ser las fuentes más importantes de esta investigación, en las cuales se focaliza, así como los relatos de su compañero Gustav Rose y los muy recientemente publicados diarios de Christian Gottfried Ehrenberg.

N2  - L’article contient l’édition critique d’un mémoire d’Alexander von Humboldt, intitulé: «Considérations sur l’atmosphère des tropiques, regardée comme objet de la pathologie chimique». Le texte a été écrit à Cuba, en 1801. Il fait partie d’un groupe de manuscrits, relatifs à la qualité de l’air dans les tropiques et aux maladies qui en découlent, portant un titre général: «C’est mon cahier de la Havanne intitulé sur la salubrité de l’air». Or A. v. Humboldt partageait alors les vues miasmatiques et il voyait, dans la qualité de l’air, l’origine des maladies que l’on dit aujourd’hui «infectieuses». L’accent y est posé sur la fièvre jaune qui occupait une place particulière dans l’horizon intellectuel et politique du début du XIXe siècle. Reste à ajouter que Humboldt se montre ici comme l’un des précurseurs de l’écologie moderne.
N2  - Der Beitrag liefert eine kritische Ausgabe des 1801 auf Kuba niedergeschriebenen Textes Alexander von Humboldts unter dem Titel „Considérations sur l’atmosphère des tropiques, regardée comme objet de la pathologie chimique“. Er wird in der Mappe mit Humboldts Handschriften zu der Luftqualität in den Tropen und den daraus resultierenden Krankheiten aufbewahrt, die von dem Gelehrten mit der Aufschrift „Cʼest mon cahier de la Havanne intitulé sur la salubrité de lʼair“ identifiziert wurde. Zur Zeit der Entstehung des Manuskripts war Alexander von Humboldt Anhänger der Miasmentheorie und erkannte in der Luftqualität den Ursprung der Krankheiten, die heutzutage als „ansteckend“ bezeichnet werden. Der Text konzentriert sich vor allem auf das Gelbfieber und somit auf eine Krankheit, die einen wichtigen Platz im geistigen und politischen Horizont der ersten Jahrzehnte des 19. Jahrhunderts einnahm. Er lässt die Leistung Alexander von Humboldts als Vorläufer der modernen Ökologie erkennen.
N2  - The article contains the critical edition of Alexander von Humboldtʼs text “Considérations sur l’atmosphère des tropiques, regardée comme objet de la pathologie chimique”, created in Cuba, in 1801. The text can be found in a group of manuscripts referring to the quality of the air in the tropics and to diseases that result from it; those manuscripts have a general title: “C’est mon cahier de la Havanne intitulé sur la salubrité de l’air”. A. v. Humboldt shared miasmatic views at that time and in the quality of the air he saw the cause of diseases called «infectious» nowadays . The emphasis is placed on yellow fever, which occupied a prominent place in intellectual and political horizons at the beginning of 19th century. It remains to be added that Humboldt writes here as a precursor of modern ecology.

N2  - Lotte Eisner (1896–1983) is without doubt one of the most important early film critics and pioneers of film history. In the history of Classical Studies, however, she plays no role. She is not even mentioned in the relevant scholarly books or articles, although she received a doctorate degree in Classical Archaeology. But it is worth taking a closer look at this relatively short phase of her life. The following lines are to be understood as a sketch of her specific ‘archaeological’ view of German Expressionist silent films. Lotte Eisner herself comments on this in her autobiography.

N2  - This article analyses, as an example of the advertising of cosmetic products, a campaign launched by the US-American company “Johnson Soap” for their product, the facial soap “Palmolive”. Examining its ads of 1911 in which certain ancient exempla are employed, it becomes clear that the Palmyrene queen Zenobia and with her the semi-historical Semiramis and the more mythical Dido are aligned to the “1001 Nights” character Scheherazade. Since they are jointly labelled as “historically famous oriental queens” and because of the reference to Zenobia’s white skin, they fall into the fantasy of fair-skinned harem women and evoke thoughts of all the pleasures and comforts of the luxurious Orient. To the modern female customer of 1900 (well steeped in the knowledge of those ancient characters) Zenobia and the other exempla should serve as celebrities worth emulating. Above all they are deemed to be beautiful, and experts in cosmetics which would guarantee the effect of the product they are standing for. A finding that proves to be valid even in an advertising concept of today for the Syrian-German “Zhenobya-soap”.

N2  - Epistula 46 is an invitation, written under the name of Paula and Eustochium, for Marcella to go to Bethlehem, by all means with the aim to stimulate positive interest in the Holy Land for a wider public and to inspire the urge to travel and sojourn. The narrative defines pilgrimage not only through biblical references but also familiarizes it through references to ancient pagan practices and pagan literature and makes it compatible with the lifestyle of Rome’s urban elites. While biblical references predominantly propagate Palestine’s spiritual appeal as a site of centuries-long salvation events, references to the classics – often combined with the expression or the stimulation of emotions – put the region’s social and intellectual appeal to the fore. The use of pagan literature, in which the traditions of educational travel of a cosmopolitan elite, the social utopia of aristocratic recessus, and not least the pleasure of otium aestheticised through literature are prefigurated, shapes Palestine in particular fashion as a place of longing. Especially the appeal of Bethlehem thus only forms through the combination of spiritual-intellectual visio and emotionally attractive social utopia, through conjunction of spelunca Christi and bucolic idyll.

N2  - This paper analyzes a specific section of Martial’s Apophoreta (Book 14), the ‘list’ of fourteen literary works that the poet-persona suggests to the reader as potentially suitable presents to give to friends on the occasion of the Saturnalia. It focuses strictly on the literary aspects of the poems and their underlying carnivalesque poetics. This includes an assessment of the logic of the poems’ arrangement and alleged inconsistencies. It is suggested that the section be read as a complex statement of Martial’s on various works and genres of Greek and Roman literature. The last couplet of the section (14.196), a certain Calvus’ work ‘On the use of cold water’ (De aquae frigidae usu), which is unidentifiable, receives particular attention, for previous scholarship has wasted a lot of ink on guessing what kind of work this may have been, thereby losing touch with the rich (meta-)poetics the couplet actually conveys.

While Ovid’s persona undergoes a slow development towards acceptance of the exilic condition by ‘refounding’ a second Rome in Tomi, Lucan’s Pompey gradually severs himself from Rome, culminating in him dying far from home apparently without regrets. Both characters try to transfer the concept of Rome to new entities. However, they are not able to escape Rome’s grasp: Pompey is killed by a Roman mercenary in Egypt, Naso’s Roma secunda is in the end only a reproduction of the exul’s irrevocably Roman fate.

N2  - Taking its cue from the portrayal of Hercules as muscleman in both films and ancient sculpture this article turns to poetry as a verbal art and examines when and how the hero's body comes into focus in Roman epic and elegy. It is argued that moments of crisis contrasting Hercules’ state in a given situation to his former heroic achievements give rise to representations of his body, while epic fight scenes rather draw attention to the bodies of his inferior opponents. The body is described through references to different body parts, qualified by attributes as masculine in elegiac contexts. A somewhat exotic word as tori suffices to highlight the hero’s muscular body.

This lack could be an obstacle for the poetological approach to the bucolic genre in antiquity, which considers metapoetry as its main feature. Our reading of the idyll shows that this limitation is only apparent.

N2  - This article explores childhood discourses in the Jewish society of the Russian Empire. It focuses on images of parents, while exploring the differences between pre-modern and modern narrative types in Jewish autobiographies. In the pre-modern paradigm, mothers are barely present while fathers appear more often, although neither parent demonstrates emotional affection toward the child. In the modern paradigm, parents are either equally present or the mother is more prominent, they engage in the everyday activities with the child, and do not hesitate to show their emotional love. Moreover, the notions of inner world and child’s individuality emerge. These changes correspond to major shifts in discourses shaping the attitude toward children in the European society.

N2  - The article deals with the family backgrounds and school careers of teachers for religious education at Jewish higher schools during the 19th century. As many of them are known because of their academic publications, our knowledge about their work as teachers is still a desideratum. Therefore, biographies of teachers at both Jewish higher schools in Frankfurt (Main) are presented and compared with the objective to identify typical structures. A key finding is the fact that access to the position as a teacher was not much formalized. Different ways to become a teacher were characteristic for both schools whilst the Modern Orthodox “Unterrichtsanstalt der Israelitischen Religionsgesellschaft” (IRG) was furthermore characterized by close family relations between its teachers. On the other hand, within the liberal network there existed a strong support based on shared convictions which worked as counterpart to the familiar network of the Modern Orthodox School.

N2  - The paper investigates how cultural and social capital were passed down to the next generations via letters of recommendation. Focusing on fathers recommending their sons to German Jewish banker Gerson (von) Bleichröder, the paper asks how father-son relations were described and which role equivalent backgrounds, especially in terms of Jewishness and social standing, played in this process. Mainly discussed are four different patriarchs approaching Bleichröder on behalf of their sons to further their careers. Making use of methods such as historical network analysis and semantic analysis the paper introduces the letters of recommendation as a complex yet promising practice in order to maintain, strengthen and even further the family’s (social) capital over generational changes. The paper finds trust and tradition to be crucial for successful recommendations. Situated at a liminal point of economic and personal spheres, recommendations shed new light on crucial questions of 19th-century Jewish history, such as acculturation and distinctiveness as well as on intra-familial dynamics in the face of profound social transformation.

N2  - In 1810, Moses Lackenbacher, together with two of his children, Israel and Heinrich, and Moses Löwenstein created the company “Moses Lackenbacher & Compagnie” with headquarters in Nagykanizsa and a branch in Vienna. The main profile of the company was army purveyance. The business activity resulted in a high spatial mobility which led to socio-cultural acculturation and conversions to Christianity within the kinship. This paper explores the connection between kinship and the operation of the company on the basis of the prominent yet little-researched Lackenbachers in the early 19th-century Habsburg Monarchy. Central questions are how the relatives organized a company during the Napoleonic wars, as well as the impact of operating a business; how familial bonds and kinship links were affected, and, in this context, how relatives together evolved into a multi-religious network of kinship.
