N2  - Sinefungin inhibited the S-adenosylmethionine-dependent farnesoic acid methyltransferase in a cell-free system containing a homogenate of corpora allata from female locusts, Locusta migratoria. The enzyme catalyzed the penultimate step of juvenile hormone biosynthesis in the insects. Culturing corpora allata in the presence of sinefungin greatly suppressed juvenile hormone production. The following in vivo effects were visible after injection of the inhibitor: increase in mortality and reduction of total haemolymph protein liter and ovary fresh weight, as well as length of terminal oocytes. Attempts to reverse these effects by topical application of the juvenile hormone analog ZR-515 (methoprene) were only partly successful. Therefore, the in vivo effects may be due to a general inhibition of methyltransferase enzymes in the insect. Sinefungin appeared to be of potential interest as the first representative of a new class of insect growth regulators.

T1  - Binding and degradation of juvenile hormone III by haemolymph proteins of the Colorado potato beetle: a re-examination
N2  - The haemolymph of the adult Colorado potato beetle, Lepinotarsa decemlineata Say, contains a high molecular weight (MW > 200,000) JH-III specific binding protein. The Kd value of the protein for racemic JH-III is 1.3 ± 0.2 × 10−7 M. It has a lower affinity for racemic JH-I and it does not bind JH-III-diol or JH-III-acid. The binding protein does discriminate between the enantiomers of synthetic, racemic JH-III as was determined by stereochemical anaysis of the bound and the free JH-III. Incubation of racemic JH-III with crude haemolymph results in preferential formation of (10S)-JH-III-acid, the unnatural configuration. The JH-esterase present in L. decemlineata haemolymph is not enantioselective. It is concluded that the most important function of the binding protein is that of a specific carrier, protecting the natural hormone against degradation by esterases. The carrier does not protect JH-I as efficiently as the lower homologue.

N2  - In einer empirischen Querschnittsstudie mit exemplarischem Charakter werden Rückschüler (Förderschüler) der Schule für Lernbehinderte (N = 26) und vier jahrgangsentsprechende Hauptschulgruppen (N = 98) in den Faktoren Erfolgs- und Mrßerfolgsattribuierung, Angst, Schulleistung und Intelligenz vergleichend untersucht. Während im affektiven Bereich ein negatives Begabungsselbstkonzept und eine erhöhte Neigung zu ängstlichem Verhalten bei den Rückschülern nachgewiesen wird, zeigen sich im Schulleistungsbereich günstigere Ergebnisse für die Förderschüler der SfL. Die Intelligenzwerte der Rückschüler liegen deutlich unter denen der Hauptschüler. Die Ergebnisse werden hinsichtlich ihrer möglichen Hintergründe und der Konsequenzen für die Schule für Lernbehinderte diskutiert.
N2  - In an empirical cross-section study with exemplary character educational retarded pupils of the special school for learning handicapped (N = 26) and four class-equivalent cohorts (N = 98) of the elementary school are comparatively examined. The variables are success-attribution, failure-attribution, fear, results at school and intelligence. Whereas a negative self-conception concerning the own talent and an intesified tendency towards anxious behaviour is proved at the educational retarded pupils there are rather advantageous results of those pupils in the range of capacity at school. The intelligence level of the educational retarded pupils is evidently lower than that of the pupils who attend the elementary school. The results are discussed with regard to their possible backgrounds and to the consequences for the special school for learning handicapped.

N2  - The intonation of a stretch of German dialogue, taken from a listener participation programme about housing problems, is investigated in respect of its function in discourse development. A selection of formal properties of intonation is described; these include pitch accents, understood as pulse-like variations in pitch, and the properties of sequences of such accents. In particular the iterative character of accentuation and the cumulation of accent patterns with similar properties is show to configure both turn-taking processes and the semantic development of the dialogue. These relations are interpreted as having strategic value for the role of the moderator.

N2  - Dyslexic and normal readers' eye movements were compared while tracking a moving fixation point and in reading. Contrary to previous reports, the dyslexic and normal readers did not differ in their number of saccades, percentage of regressions, or stability of fixations in the tracking task. Thus, defective oculomotor control was not associated with or a causal factor in dyslexia, and the dyslexics' abnormal eye movements in reading must be related to differences in higher cognitive processes. However, individual differences in oculmotor efficiency, independent of reading ability, were found within both the dyslexic and normal groups, and these differences were correlated in reading and tracking tasks.

N2  - Aus dem Inhalt: Die Juvenilhormone 1a-c werden im Blut von Insekten enzymatisch zu den biologisch inaktiven Sluren hydrolysiert. Bei der Hydrolyse von racemischem 1c im Blut der Wanderheuschrecke Locusta migratoria wird ein Umsatz von 40-60% erreicht. Das unumgesetzte Edukt enthällt einen Überschuß an natürlich konfiguriertem (10R)-1c (e.e. 47.2%). Wir konnten zeigen, daß das in der Hämolymphe vorhandene Hormon-Bindungsprotein bevorzugt mit (10R)- 1c assoziiert.
