N2  - Früh setzte in Europa die Wahrnehmung der Veränderung des regionalen Klimas durch Waldrodungen ein. Als erster widmete Theophrastus (372-288 v. Chr.) dem Thema des menschlichen Einflusses auf die Temperatur und die Qualität der Luft einer Region ausführliche Überlegungen. Mit ihm beginnt ein Diskurs, der durch die Entdeckung und Kolonisierung Amerikas einen enormen Aufschwung erfuhr und im letzten Drittel des 19. Jahrhunderts auf globaler Ebene seinen Höhepunkt erreichte, um dann nach der Jahrhundertwende in Vergessenheit zu geraten. Alexander von Humboldt legte in seinem Amerika-Werk durch seine Fallstudie zum See von Valencia (1799) die ersten wissenschaftlichen Grundlagen für die systematische Untersuchung der Frage nach dem durch Menschen verursachten Veränderungen des Klimas. Die Fortsetzung dieser Studien in Lateinamerika durch Jean Baptist Boussingault erregten weltweites Aufsehen und wurden für die frühe Umweltbewegung (George Marsh) zum zentralen Argument bei der Verteidigung der Wälder in Europa, in den U.S.A. und in den Kolonien. Dem Klimaeinfluss des Waldes wuchs immer mehr eine mythische Grösse zu, sodass bei der Erschliessung regenarmer Regionen (in Australien und in den U.S.A.) umfangreiche Aufforstungsprogramme die Niederschlagsmenge erhöhen sollten. Nach dem Scheitern dieser Programme war generell die Befürchtung erwarteter anthropogener Klimakatastrophen durch die Zerstörung der Wälder diskreditiert.
N2  - The perception that regional climate might be influenced by deforestation started early in Europe. The first to consider human influence on regional temperature and air quality was Theophrastus (372-288 AD). He started a discourse that intensified when Europeans discovered and colonized America, peaked at the end of the 19th century and then fell into oblivion at the beginning of the 20th century. In his case study on the Valencia Lake in Venezuela (1799) Alexander von Humboldt laid the scientific foundations to systematically examine the question whether changes in climate could be human induced. The follow-up studies undertaken by Jean Baptist Boussingault on the same lake and on others in Latin America caused a sensation world-wide and his arguments were taken up by the early environmental movement (e.g. George Marsh) in defence of forests in Europe, the U.S. and in the colonies. The positive influence on climate ascribed to forests reached mythical dimention, leading to extensive reforestation programs to increase rainfall in areas with low precipitation. When these programs failed, the fear that the destruction of forests could lead to human induced climatic catastrophes was generally discredited.

N2  - En este artículo estudiamos el reconocimiento de Humboldt y su obra en un momento tardío de su vida, ya en el reinado de Isabel II (1844-68), cuando recibió en 1847 en Potsdam la Gran Cruz de la Real y Distinguida Órden Española de Carlos III, que fue fundada por Carlos III en el año 1771 y se da desde entonces a ciudadanos selectos por méritos especiales relacionados con la corte. Publicamos también la carta desconocida que envió Humboldt al duque de Sotomayor dando las gracias por la entrega de la condecoración (9-8-1848). Incluimos también en este estudio los nombramientos previos como miembro correspondiente del Real Jardín Botánico, de la Real Academia Médica Matritense y de la Real Academia de Ciencias, donde era presidente Antonio Remón Zarco del Valle, personaje que parece tener mucha importancia en el reconocimiento político de la reina Isabel II por las potencias centroeuropeas.
N2  - Dieser Artikel untersucht die Anerkennung Humboldts sowie seines Werkes zu einem späten Zeitpunkt seines Lebens, bereits unter der Regentschaft von Isabel II. (1844-68), als er im Jahr 1847 in Potsdam das Gran Cruz des Real y Distinguida Órden Española de Carlos III. erhielt, welcher im Jahr 1771 von Carlos III. gegründet worden war und seitdem an auserwählte Bürger für besondere Dienste im Zusammenhang mit dem Königshaus vergeben wird. Desweiteren wird hier ein bislang unbekannter Brief veröffentlicht, den Humboldt an den Fürsten Sotomayor gerichtet hatte und in welchem er ihm für die Verleihung dieser Auszeichnung dankte (9.8.1848). Zudem werden in dieser Studie auch frühere Ernennungen Humboldts als Korrespondent des Real Jardín Botánico untersucht, sowie der Real Academia Médica Matritense und der Real Academia de Ciencias, deren Präsident Antonio Remón Zarco del Valle eine große Bedeutung zuzukommen scheint im Zusammenhang mit der politischen Anerkennung der Königin Isabel II. durch die zentraleuropäischen Regierungen.
N2  - This article studies the recognition of Humboldt and his works at a late moment of his life, during the reign of Isabel II (1844-68), when in 1847 he received in Potsdam the Gran Cruz of the Real y Distinguida Órden Española de Carlos III, founded by Carlos III in 1771 and given since then to selected person for special merits related to the Court. We also publish the unknown letter that Humboldt sent to the prince Sotomayor to express his gratefulness for the decoration awarded to him (9th of August 1848). In this study are also included his prior appointments as correspondent member of the Real Jardín Botánico, the Real Academia Médica Matritense as well as the Real Academia de Ciencias, whose president Antonio Remón Zarco del Valle seems to have a significant importance related to the political recognition of the reign of Isabel II by the central European governments.

Für Goethes war dies der Vesuv, fü Humboldt der Chimborazo. Dieser Beitrag untersucht die zahlreichen konzeptionellen und formalen Parallelen der beiden Gemälde, die es wahrscheinlich machen, dass das Goethe-Bildnis als Vorbild für das Humboldt-Portrait diente.
N2  - Both Alexander von Humboldt and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe have been portrayed in their later years anachronistically before the background of a mountain that had been of high significance in their earlier biography and carreer. For Goethe this was the Vesuvio, and for Humboldt the Chimborazo. This paper examines the numerous conceptual and formal parallels between the two paintings which make it probable that the Goethe portrait served as a blueprint for the portrait of Humboldt.

N2  - La "antiquización" de América – implementar motivos clásicos como modelos de apropriación imperial – es una de las estrategias retóricas más importantes en la relación de viaje de Alexander von Humboldt. Mediante la experiencia colonial, sin embargo, este discurso se deestabiliza: Se ponen en contradicción referencias metafóricas y metonímicas, connotaciones positivas y negativas, diferentes modos de temporalización, identificaciones coloniales y disidentes etc. El concepto de Antigüedad se de-autoriza – está deconstruido. Observamos la disolución del clasicismo europea como dispositivo político-estético en el contacto con la diferencia cultural.
N2  - The "antiquization" of America, using classicist motifs as imperial models of appropriation, is a central rhetorical strategy in Alexander von Humboldt's travelogue. Over the course of the colonial experience this discourse is infused with tension: metaphoric and metonymic types of references collide; positive and negative connotations are superimposed; incompatible modes of temporalization are contrasted; colonial as well as dissident identifications are laid out. The concept of "antiquity" is de-authorized, deconstructed. Readers witness the dissolution of European classicism as a politico-aesthetic 'dispositif' due to contact with cultural difference.
N2  - Die "Antikisierung" Amerikas, die Anwendung antiker Motive als imperialer Muster der Aneignung, ist eine zentrale rhetorische Strategie in Alexander von Humboldts Reisebericht. Im Verlauf der kolonialen Erfahrung jedoch wird dieser klassizistische Diskurs irritiert durch Spannungen zwischen metaphorischer und metonymischer Referenz, positiver und negativer Konnotation, synchroner und retrospektiver Temporalisierung, hegemonialer und dissidenter Perspektive etc. Das Konzept der Antike verliert seine Autorität – es wird dekonstruiert. Wir beobachten die Erosion des zeitgenössischen Klassizismus als ästhetisch-politischen Dispositivs im Kontakt mit der kulturellen Fremde.

N2  - My essay attends to a number of passages in Alexander von Humboldt’s Personal Narrative in which the Prussian explorer expresses anxiety about the apparent dangers posed by the overwhelmingly productive tropical landscapes he observes. In these passages, the excesses of an “exotic nature” threaten European identity and modes of civilization—and they trouble the accuracy of Humboldt’s own observational project. I also explore Humboldt’s related worry that South American vegetable (and visual) overload will exert a destabilizing effect on his aesthetic sensibility, disrupting his ability to represent the “New Continent” accurately in writing. Finally, I sketch the influence of Humboldt’s representations of tropical excess on nineteenth-century British cultural thought and literary practice. Studying the instabilities experienced by Personal Narrative’s expatriates and colonists promises to draw out important tensions latent in Humboldt’s treatment of tropical landscape and to illuminate broader epistemological and aesthetic shifts being worked out during the period.
