Problematic cannabis use is often associated with comorbid psychopathological problems. The purpose of the current study was to elucidate the underlying developmental processes connecting externalizing and internalizing psychopathology in childhood and adolescence with problematic cannabis use in young adulthood. Methods: Data were drawn from the Mannheim Study of Children at Risk, an ongoing epidemiological cohort study from birth to adulthood. For n = 307 participants, symptom scores of conduct/oppositional defiant disorder, attention problems, hyperactivity/impulsivity, and internalizing disorders were available for the periods of childhood (4.5-11 years) and adolescence (15 years). At age 25 years, problematic cannabis use was assessed via clinical interview and a self-rating questionnaire. Results: At age 25 years, problematic cannabis use was identified in n = 28 participants (9.1%). Childhood conduct/oppositional behavior problems were predictive of problematic cannabis use during young adulthood when comorbid symptoms were controlled for. No such effect was found for childhood attention, hyperactivity/impulsivity or internalizing problems. With respect to psychopathological symptoms during adolescence, only attention problems were significantly related to later problematic cannabis use when controlling for comorbidity. Conclusions: The current study highlights the role of conduct/oppositional behavior problems during childhood and attention problems during adolescence in later problematic cannabis use. It sheds more light on the developmental sequence of childhood and adolescence psychopathology and young adult cannabis use, which is a prerequisite for effective prevention approaches. During active movements there is also superior visual performance when moving toward compared to away from the stimulus (direction effect). The "modulated visual pathways" hypothesis argues that differential involvement of magno- and parvocellular visual processing streams causes the near-hand effect. The key finding supporting this hypothesis is an increase in temporal and a reduction in spatial processing in near-hand space (Gozli et al., 2012). Since this hypothesis has, so far, only been tested with static hand postures, we provide a conceptual replication of Gozli et al.'s (2012) result with moving hands, thus also probing the generality of the direction effect. Participants performed temporal or spatial gap discriminations while their right hand was moving below the display. In contrast to Gozli et al (2012), temporal gap discrimination was superior at intermediate and not near hand proximity. In spatial gap discrimination, a direction effect without hand proximity effect suggests that pragmatic attentional maps overshadowed temporal/spatial processing biases for far/near-hand space. The current study analyzed the attrition rate during follow-up in a randomized controlled pediatric weight management program (EPOC study) within a tertiary care setting. Methods: Five hundred twenty-three parents and their 7-13-year-old children with obesity participated in the randomized controlled intervention trial. Follow-up data were assessed 6 and 12 months after the end of treatment. Attrition was defined as providing no objective weight data. Demographic and psychological baseline characteristics were used to predict attrition at 6- and 12-month follow-up using multivariate logistic regression analyses. Conclusions: The minor differences between the completers and the non-completers suggest that our retention strategies were successful. Further research should focus on prevention of attrition in families with a lower educational background. We start with a simple example that builds up the one-sample t-test from the beginning, explaining important concepts such as the sampling distribution of the sample mean, and the iid assumption. Then, we examine the meaning of the p-value in detail and discuss several important misconceptions about what a p-value does and does not tell us. This leads to a discussion of Type I, II error and power, and Type S and M error. An important conclusion from this discussion is that one should aim to carry out appropriately powered studies. Next, we discuss two common issues that we have encountered in psycholinguistics and linguistics: running experiments until significance is reached and the ‘garden-of-forking-paths’ problem discussed by Gelman and others. Religiosity showed a positive direct link with attitudes towards sexual coercion, but a negative indirect link through risky sexual scripts. Is the perceptual span a stable indicator of reading performance? What drives its development? Do initially slower and faster readers converge or diverge over development? Here we present the first longitudinal data on the development of the perceptual span in elementary school children. Using the moving window technique, eye movements of 127 German children in three age groups (Grades 1, 2, and 3 in Year 1) were recorded at two time points (T1 and T2) 1 year apart. Introducing a new measure of the perceptual span, nonlinear mixed-effects modeling was used to separate window size effects from asymptotic reading performance. Cross-sectional differences were well replicated longitudinally. Asymptotic reading rate increased monotonously with grade, but in a decelerating fashion. A significant change in the perceptual span was observed only between Grades 2 and 3. Together with results from a cross-lagged panel model, this suggests that the perceptual span increases as a consequence of relatively well established word reading. Stabilities of observed and predicted reading rates were high after Grade 1, whereas the perceptual span was only moderately stable for all grades. Comparing faster and slower readers as assessed at T1, in general, a pattern of stable between-group differences emerged rather than a compensatory pattern; second and third graders even showed a Matthew effect in reading rate and the perceptual span, respectively. JF - The journal of educational psychology N2 - In a series of experiments, we tested a recently proposed hypothesis stating that the degree of alignment between the form of a mental representation resulting from learning with a particular visualization format and the specific requirements of a learning task determines learning performance (task-appropriateness). Groups of participants were required to learn the stroke configuration, the stroke order, or the stroke directions of a set of Chinese pseudocharacters. For each learning task, participants were divided into groups receiving dynamic, static-sequential, or static visualizations. An old/new character recognition task was given at test. The results showed that learning both stroke configuration and stroke order was best with static pictures (Experiments 1 and 2), while there was no reliable difference between the groups for learning stroke direction (Experiment 3). An additional experiment, however, revealed that learning with sequential pictures was superior when testing was carried out with sequential pictures, irrespective of the learning task (Experiment 4). The combined evidence from all experiments speaks against task requirements playing a role in determining the effectiveness of a visualization format. Furthermore, the evidence supports the view that a high degree of congruence between information presented during learning and information presented at test results in better learning (study-test congruence). We carried out two dual task experiments aimed at resolving several ambiguities in those studies. In our experiments, encoding and response of one serial reconstruction task was embedded within encoding and response of a concurrent serial reconstruction task. Order demands in both tasks were independently varied so as to find revealing patterns of interference between the two tasks. In Experiment 1, participants were to maintain and reconstruct the order of a list of verbal materials, while maintaining a list of spatial materials or vice-versa. Increasing the order demands in the outer reconstruction task resulted in small or non reliable performance decrements in the embedded reconstruction task. Experiment 2 sought to compare these results against two same-domain baseline conditions (two verbal lists or two spatial lists). In all conditions, increasing order demands in the outer task resulted in small or non-reliable performance decrements in the embedded task. However, performance in the embedded tasks was generally lower in the same-domain baseline conditions than in the cross-domain conditions. We argue that the main effect of domain in Experiment 2 indicates the contribution of domain-specific processes to short-term serial order maintenance. In addition, we interpret the failure to find consistent cross-list interference irrespective of domain as indicating the involvement of grouping mechanisms in concurrently performed serial order tasks. The present article investigates the nature of the temporal relationships between binge eating and low self-esteem, depressive symptoms, interoceptive deficits, perfectionism, weight/shape concerns, dietary restraint, and the internalization of the societal body ideal in adolescence while taking into account the moderating effects of age and gender. A German population-based sample of 1039 boys and girls from 12 to 19 years of age answered self-report questionnaires on risk factors and eating pathology on 2 measurement points separated by 20months. Data were analyzed using a cross-lagged panel design. Low self-esteem, interoceptive deficits, weight/shape concerns, and the internalization of the societal body ideal predicted binge eating longitudinally in bivariate analyses. Binge eating predicted later depressive symptoms, whereas perfectionism and dietary restraint were not longitudinally linked to binge eating in either direction. Low self-esteem and weight/shape concerns emerged as multivariate predictors of binge eating in girls and boys, respectively. No moderating effects of age were observed. The results suggest that depressive symptoms might rather be a consequence of binge eating than a risk factor, and this underscores that even subclinical eating pathology might be associated with negative psychological outcomes. Central risk factors that should be targeted in prevention programs might be low self-esteem for girls and weight/shape concerns for boys. Past research has used forced-choice answer formats, such as questionnaires, to assess these misattributions; however, with this approach, idiosyncratic attributions cannot be assessed. Free associations are an important complement to existing approaches that assess symptom attributions. Aims: With this study, we contribute to the current literature by using an open-response instrument to investigate changes in freely associated attributions after exposure therapy (ET) and cognitive therapy (CT) compared with a wait list (WL). Method: The current study is a re-examination of a formerly published randomized controlled trial (Weck, Neng, Richtberg, Jakob and Stangier, 2015) that investigated the effectiveness of CT and ET. Seventy-three patients with hypochondriasis were randomly assigned to CT, ET or a WL, and completed a 12-week treatment (or waiting period). Before and after the treatment or waiting period, patients completed an Attribution task in which they had to spontaneously attribute nine common bodily sensations to possible causes in an open-response format. Results: Compared with the WL, both CT and ET reduced the frequency of somatic attributions regarding severe diseases (CT: Hedges's g = 1.12; ET: Hedges's g = 1.03) and increased the frequency of normalizing attributions (CT: Hedges's g = 1.17; ET: Hedges's g = 1.24). Only CT changed the attributions regarding moderate diseases (Hedges's g = 0.69). Changes in somatic attributions regarding mild diseases and psychological attributions were not observed. Conclusions: Both CT and ET are effective for treating freely associated misattributions in patients with hypochondriasis. This study supplements research that used a forced-choice assessment. Alcohol was involved in a substantial proportion of the reported incidents. Therefore, the purpose of the present study was to examine the prevalence of sexual aggression victimization and perpetration since the age of 14 (the legal age of consent) in a sample of male and female students aged between 18 and 29 years from five Chilean universities (N = 1135), to consider possible gender differences, and to study the extent to which alcohol was involved in the reported incidents of perpetration and victimization. Sexual aggression victimization and perpetration was measured with a Chilean Spanish version of the Sexual Aggression and Victimization Scale (SAV-S), which includes three coercive strategies (use or threat of physical force, exploitation of an incapacitated state, and verbal pressure), three victim-perpetrator constellations (current or former partners, friends/acquaintances, and strangers), and four sexual acts (sexual touch, attempted sexual intercourse, completed sexual intercourse, and other sexual acts, such as oral sex). Overall, 51.9% of women and 48.0% of men reported at least one incident of sexual victimization, and 26.8% of men and 16.5% of women reported at least one incident of sexual aggression perpetration since the age of 14. For victimization, only few gender differences were found, but significantly more men than women reported sexual aggression perpetration. A large proportion of perpetrators also reported victimization experiences. Regarding victim-perpetrator relationship, sexual aggression victimization and perpetration were more common between persons who knew each other than between strangers. Alcohol use by the perpetrator, victim, or both was involved in many incidents of sexual aggression victimization and perpetration, particularly among strangers. The present data are the first to provide a systematic and detailed picture of sexual aggression among college students in Chile, including victimization and perpetration reports by both men and women and confirming the critical role of alcohol established in past research from Western countries. Therefore, the purpose of the present study was to examine the prevalence of sexual aggression victimization and perpetration since the age of 14 (the legal age of consent) in a sample of male and female students aged between 18 and 29 years from five Chilean universities (N = 1135), to consider possible gender differences, and to study the extent to which alcohol was involved in the reported incidents of perpetration and victimization. Sexual aggression victimization and perpetration was measured with a Chilean Spanish version of the Sexual Aggression and Victimization Scale (SAV-S), which includes three coercive strategies (use or threat of physical force, exploitation of an incapacitated state, and verbal pressure), three victim-perpetrator constellations (current or former partners, friends/acquaintances, and strangers), and four sexual acts (sexual touch, attempted sexual intercourse, completed sexual intercourse, and other sexual acts, such as oral sex). Overall, 51.9% of women and 48.0% of men reported at least one incident of sexual victimization, and 26.8% of men and 16.5% of women reported at least one incident of sexual aggression perpetration since the age of 14. For victimization, only few gender differences were found, but significantly more men than women reported sexual aggression perpetration. A large proportion of perpetrators also reported victimization experiences. Regarding victim-perpetrator relationship, sexual aggression victimization and perpetration were more common between persons who knew each other than between strangers. Alcohol use by the perpetrator, victim, or both was involved in many incidents of sexual aggression victimization and perpetration, particularly among strangers. The present data are the first to provide a systematic and detailed picture of sexual aggression among college students in Chile, including victimization and perpetration reports by both men and women and confirming the critical role of alcohol established in past research from Western countries. Stress modulates social cognition through cortisol, which acts on glucocorticoid (GR) and mineralocorticoid receptors (MR) in the brain. We examined the role of MR activation on attentional bias toward emotional cues and on emotion recognition. We included 40 healthy young women and 40 healthy young men (mean age 23.9 +/- 3.3), who either received 0.4 mg of the MR agonist fludrocortisone or placebo. A dot-probe paradigm was used to test for attentional biases toward emotional cues (happy and sad faces). Moreover, we used a facial emotion recognition task to investigate the ability to recognize emotional valence (anger and sadness) from facial expression in four graded categories of emotional intensity (20, 30, 40, and 80 %). In the emotional dot-probe task, we found a main effect of treatment and a treatment x valence interaction. Post hoc analyses revealed an attentional bias away from sad faces after placebo intake and a shift in selective attention toward sad faces compared to placebo. We found no attentional bias toward happy faces after fludrocortisone or placebo intake. In the facial emotion recognition task, there was no main effect of treatment. MR stimulation seems to be important in modulating quick, automatic emotional processing, i.e., a shift in selective attention toward negative emotional cues. Our results confirm and extend previous findings of MR function. However, we did not find an effect of MR stimulation on emotion recognition. Thus, identifying factors and processes that con-tribute to the continuity and increase of aggression in middle childhood is essential in order to facilitate the development of intervention programs. The present PhD thesis aimed at expand-ing the understanding of the development of aggression in middle childhood by examining risk factors in the intrapersonal and interpersonal domains as well as the interplay between these factors: Maladaptive anger regulation was examined as an intrapersonal risk factor; processes that occur in the peer context (social rejection and peer socialization) were included as interpersonal risk factors. In addition, in order to facilitate the in situ assessment of anger regulation strategies, an observational measure of anger regulation was developed and validated. Method: The research aims were addressed within the scope of four articles. Data from two measurement time points about ten months apart were available for the analyses. Participants were elementary school children aged from 6 to 10 years at T1 and 7 to 11 years at T2. The first article was based on cross-sectional analyses including only the first time point; in the remaining three articles longitudinal associations across the two time points were analyzed. The first two articles were concerned with the development and cross-sectional as well as longitudinal validation of observational measure of anger regulation in middle childhood in a sample of 599 children. Using the same sample, the third article investigated the longitudinal link between maladaptive anger regulation and aggression considering social rejection as a mediating variable. The frequency as well as different functions of aggression (reactive and proactive) were included as outcomes measures. The fourth article examined the influence of class-level aggression on the development of different forms of aggression (relational and physical) over time under consideration of differences in initial individual aggression in a sample of 1,284 children. In addition, it was analyzed if the path from aggression to social rejection varies as a function of class-level aggression. Results: The first two articles revealed that the observational measure of anger regulation developed for the purpose of this research was cross-sectionally related to anger reactivity, aggression and social rejection as well as longitudinally related to self-reported anger regula-tion. In the third article it was found that T1 maladaptive anger regulation showed no direct link to T2 aggression, but an indirect link through T1 social rejection. This indirect link was found for the frequency of aggression as well as for reactive and proactive aggression. The fourth article revealed that with regard to relational aggression, a high level of classroom ag-gression predicted an increase of individual aggression only among children with initially low levels of aggression. For physical aggression, it was found that the overall level of aggression in the class affected all children equally. In addition, physical aggression increased the likelihood of social rejection irrespective of the class-level of aggression whereas relational aggression caused social rejection only in classes with a generally low level of relational aggression. The analyses of gender-specific effects showed that children were mainly influenced by their same-gender peers and that the effect on the opposite gender was higher if children engaged in gender-atypical forms of aggressive behavior. Conclusion: The results provided evidence for the construct and criterion validity of the observational measure of maladaptive anger regulation that was developed within the scope of this research. Furthermore, the findings indicated that maladaptive anger regulation constitutes an important risk factor of aggression through the influence of social rejection. Finally, the results demonstrated that the level of aggression among classmates is relevant for the development of individual aggression over time and that the children´s evaluation of relationally aggressive behavior varies as a function of the normativity of relational aggression in the class. The study findings have implications for the measurement of anger regulation in middle childhood as well as for the prevention of aggression and social rejection. N2 - Hintergrund: Das Auftreten aggressiven Verhaltens in der mittleren Kindheit ist mit einer Reihe von problematischen Folgen verbunden. Das Identifizieren von Prozessen und Faktoren, die zur Kontinuität und zu einem Anstieg aggressiven Verhaltens in der mittleren Kindheit beitragen, ist essentiell; nicht zuletzt, um die Entwicklung von Interventionsprogrammen zu ermöglichen. Das Ziel der vorliegenden Dissertation war es, das Wissen über die Entwicklung von Aggression in der mittleren Kindheit auszuweiten, indem Risikofaktoren aus dem intrapersonalen und dem interpersonalen Bereich sowie das Zusammenspiel dieser Faktoren untersucht wurden: Maladaptive Ärgerregulation wurde als ein intrapersonaler Risikofaktor untersucht; Prozesse, die sich im Peerkontext abspielen (soziale Zurückweisung und Peersozialisation), wurden als interpersonale Risikofaktoren analysiert. Zudem wurde eine Beobachtungsmethode für Ärgerregulation entwickelt und validiert, um die Erfassung von Ärgerregulationsstrategien in situ zu ermöglichen. Methode: Die Forschungsfragen wurden im Rahmen von vier Artikeln addressiert. Daten aus zwei Messzeitpunkten, die etwa zehn Monate auseinander lagen, wurden für die Analysen verwendet. Ergebnisse: Die ersten beiden Artikel zeigten, dass die Beobachtungsmethode für Ärgerregulation im Querschnitt mit Ärgerreaktivität, Aggression und sozialer Zurückweisung und im Längsschnitt mit selbstberichteter Ärgerregulation zusammenhängt. Im dritten Artikel wurde gefunden, dass Ärgerregulation zu T1 nicht direkt mit T2 Aggression assoziiert ist, aber es zeigte sich ein indirekter Effekt über den Einfluss von T1 sozialer Zurückweisung. Dieser indirekte Effekt fand sich sowohl für die Häufigkeit von Aggression als auch für reaktive und proaktive Aggression. Der vierte Artikel zeigte, dass in Hinblick auf relationale Aggression ein hohes Maß an Aggression in der Klasse nur bei Kindern, die ein niedriges Ausgangsniveau an Aggression hatten, einen Anstieg an individueller Aggression vorhersagt. Für physische Aggression zeigte sich, dass die Aggression in der Klasse alle Kinder gleichermaßen beeinflusst. Zudem erhöhte physische Aggression die Wahrscheinlichkeit für soziale Zurückweisung, unabhängig von der mittleren Aggression in der Klasse, während sich für relationale Aggression gezeigt hat, dass aggressives Verhalten nur in Klassen mit einem niedrigen Level an Aggression mit sozialer Zurückweisung assoziiert ist. Diskussion: Die Ergebnisse liefern Evidenz für die Kontrukt- und Kriteriumsvalidität der Beobachtungsmethode für Ärgerregulation, die im Rahmen dieser Dissertation entwickelt wurde. Außerdem deuten die Ergebnisse darauf hin, dass maladaptive Ärgerregulation über den Einfluss von sozialer Zurückweisung einen wichtigen Risikofaktor für Aggression darstellt. However, research on predictors of treatment outcome for hypochondriasis is rare. Possible predictors of treatment outcome in cognitive therapy (CT) and exposure therapy (ET) for hypochondriasis were investigated. MethodCharacteristics and behaviors of 75 patients were considered as possible predictors: sociodemographic variables (sex, age, and cohabitation); psychopathology (pretreatment hypochondriacal symptoms, comorbid mental disorders, and levels of depression, anxiety, and somatic symptoms); and patient in-session interpersonal behavior. ResultsSeverity of pretreatment hypochondriacal symptoms, comorbid mental disorders, and patient in-session interpersonal behavior were significant predictors in multiple hierarchical regression analyses. Interactions between the predictors and the treatment (CT or ET) were not found. ConclusionsIn-session interpersonal behavior is an important predictor of outcome. Furthermore, there are no specific contraindications to treating hypochondriasis with CT or ET. Putting this bias to a test, Kapoula [1] used a paradigm in which observers were presented with two different sets of target eccentricities that partially overlapped each other. Her data were suggestive of a saccadic range effect (SRE): There was a tendency for saccades to overshoot close targets and undershoot far targets in a block, suggesting that there was a response bias towards the center of eccentricities in a given block. Our Experiment 1 was a close replication of the original study by Kapoula [1]. In addition, we tested whether the SRE is sensitive to top-down requirements associated with the task, and we also varied the target presentation duration. In Experiments 1 and 2, we expected to replicate the SRE for a visual discrimination task. The simple visual saccade-targeting task in Experiment 3, entailing minimal top-down influence, was expected to elicit a weaker SRE. Voluntary saccades to remembered target locations in Experiment 3 were expected to elicit the strongest SRE. Contrary to these predictions, we did not observe a SRE in any of the tasks. Our findings complement the results reported by Gillen et al. [2] who failed to find the effect in a saccade-targeting task with a very brief target presentation. Together, these results suggest that unlike arm movements, saccadic eye movements are not biased towards making saccades of a constant, optimal amplitude for the task. Participants heard low- or high-variance acoustic stimuli. Euclidean distance of fixations from target and competitor pictures over time was analysed using Generalised Additive Mixed Modelling. Distance of fixations from target and competitor pictures varied as a function of acoustic cue, providing evidence for gradient, nonlinear sensitivity to cue values. Moreover, cue value effects significantly interacted with statistical variance, indicating that the cue distribution directly affects perceptual uncertainty. Interestingly, the time course of effects differed between target distance and competitor distance models. The pattern of effects over time suggests a global strategy in response to the level of uncertainty: as uncertainty increases, verification looks increase accordingly. In the randomised controlled PINGU intervention trial, we tested the effects of complementary foods with different contents of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) on term infant LC-PUFA status. Methods Healthy infants born at term were randomised to receive from the introduction of complementary feeding at the age of 4 to 6 months until age of 10 months ready-made complementary meals either with ALA-rich rapeseed oil (intervention group (IG)-R), with salmon twice weekly to provide preformed DHA (IG-F), or with linoleic acid-rich corn oil (control group, CG). Fatty acid composition was assessed in erythrocyte (RBC) and plasma glycerophospholipids. Results Complete data of fatty acids in RBC (plasma) were available from 158 (155) infants. After intervention, infants assigned to IG-F showed higher RBC and plasma percentages of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), DHA, and total n-3 LC-PUFA than CG (each p < 0.001). In IG-R, levels of ALA and the ratio of ALA to LA in plasma and RBC (all p < 0.0001) as well as RBC-EPA (p < 0.0001) were higher than in CG, while DHA levels did not differ between IG-R and CG. Conclusions Regular fish consumption during complementary feeding enhances infant EPA and DHA status. The usage of rapeseed oil in small amounts concordant with EU-law for commercial meals enhances endogenic EPA-synthesis, but does not affect DHA status. Provision of oily fish with complementary feeds is advisable to prevent a decline of DHA status. Little is known, however, about the bidirectional effects between students’ perceptions of their parents’ beliefs and behaviors and the students’ own domain-specific values. This study analyzed how students’ perceptions of parents’ beliefs and behaviors and students’ mathematics values and mathematics-related career plans affect each other bidirectionally, and analyzed the role of students’ gender as a moderator of these relations. Data from 475 students in 11th and 12th grade (girls: 50.3%; 31 classrooms; 12 schools), who participated in 2 waves of the study, were analyzed. Results of longitudinal structural equation models demonstrated that students’ perceptions of their parents’ mathematics value beliefs at Time 1 affected the students’ own mathematics utility value at Time 2. Bidirectional effects were not shown in the full sample but were identified for boys. The paths within the tested model varied for boys and girls. For example, boys’, not girls’, mathematics intrinsic value predicted their reported conversations with their fathers about future occupational plans. Boys’, not girls’, perceived parents’ mathematics value predicted the mathematics utility value. Findings are discussed in relation to their implications for parents and teachers, as well as in relation to gendered motivational processes. In psycho-oncology, preliminary psychological therapies targeting cancer pain have been tested; however, a systematic review of available interventions is lacking, especially considering their dissemination, evidence base, study quality, and the comparison with established treatments. Therefore, the aim of the current study is to systematically review the current research on psychological treatments for pain in cancer patients. During May 2014, MEDLINE, PsycINFO, PSYNDEX, and CENTRAL databases were searched. Psychological treatments for pain in adult cancer patients studied in randomized, controlled trials (RCTs) and referring to pain as primary or secondary outcome were included. After examination for inclusion, structured data extraction and assessment followed. Data were synthesized narratively. In the review, 32 RCTs were included. Studies mainly referred to patients with breast cancer or patients in earlier stages of the disease. The methodological quality of included studies was heterogeneous. Most commonly, short interventions were delivered by nurses in out-patient settings. Interventions including education and relaxation techniques were utilized most often, followed by interventions with behavioral or cognitive components. A need for research persists regarding efficacy of current psychotherapeutic interventions, or the role of mediator variables (e. g., coping) on pain perception in cancer patients. Studies with high methodological quality which comprehensively and transparently report on interventions and designs are lacking. In three experiments, participants had to detect a physically large (or small) target item among physically small (or large) distractors in a search task comprising single-digit numbers. The relative numerical size of the digits was varied, such that the target item was either among the numerically large or small numbers in the search display and the relation between numerical and physical size was either congruent or incongruent. Perceptual differences of the stimuli were controlled by a condition in which participants had to search for a differently coloured target item with the same physical size and by the usage of LCD-style numbers that were matched in visual similarity by shape transformations. The results of all three experiments consistently revealed that detecting a physically large target item is significantly faster when the numerical size of the target item is large as well (congruent), compared to when it is small (incongruent). This novel finding of a size congruity effect in visual search demonstrates an interaction between numerical and physical size in an experimental setting beyond typically used binary comparison tasks, and provides important new evidence for the notion of shared cognitive codes for numbers and sensorimotor magnitudes. Theoretical consequences for recent models on attention, magnitude representation and their interactions are discussed. Drawing on a large community sample of N = 1,466 male and female children and adolescents from Germany aged between 10 and 18 years, results of latent structural equation modeling were consistent with the hypotheses that peer acceptance of aggression would predict external control beliefs in the social domain, which in turn, should predict aggressive behaviour over time. Teachers rated the children on all variables, parents additionally provided ratings of antisocial behavior and social rejection. Latent structural equation modeling yielded the predicted positive paths from antisocial behavior at T1 to social rejection and academic failure at T2. As predicted, affiliation with deviant peers at T2 was positively associated with social rejection and academic failure at the same measurement point. Particularly in the peer and in the academic domain, aggression inhibits the individual from making important learning experiences that are predictive for a healthy transition into adulthood. Furthermore, the resulting developmental deficits have the propensity to feedback and to promote aggression at later developmental stages. The aim of the present PhD thesis was to investigate pathways and processes involved in the etiology of aggression by examining the interrelation between multiple developmental problems in the peer and in the academic domain. More specifically, the relevance of affiliation with deviant peers as a driving mechanism for the development of aggression, factors promoting the affiliation with deviant peers (social rejection; academic failure), and mechanisms by which affiliation with deviant peers leads to aggression (external locus of control) were investigated. Method: The research questions were addressed by three studies. Three data waves were available for the first study, the second and third study were based on two data waves. The first study specified pathways to antisocial behavior by investigating the temporal interrelation between social rejection, academic failure, and affiliation with deviant peers in a sample of 1,657 male and female children and adolescents aged between 6 and 15 years. The second study examined the role of external control beliefs as a potential mediator in the link between affiliation with deviant peers and aggression in a sample of 1,466 children and adolescents in the age of 9 to 19 years, employing a half-longitudinal design. The third study aimed to expand the findings of Study 1 and Study 2 by examining the differential predictivity of combinations of developmental risks for different functions of aggression, using a sample of 1,479 participants in the age between 9 and 19 years. First, profiles of social rejection, academic failure, and affiliation with deviant peers were identified, using latent profile analysis. Second, prospective pathways between risk-profiles and reactive and proactive aggression were investigated, using latent path analysis. Results: The first study revealed that antisocial behavior at T1 was associated with social rejection and academic failure at T2. Both mechanisms promoted affiliation with deviant peers at the same data wave, which predicted deviancy at T3. Furthermore, both an indirect pathway via social rejection and affiliation with deviant peers and an indirect pathway via academic failure and affiliation with deviant peers significantly mediated the link between antisocial behavior at the first and the third data wave. Additionally, the proposed pathways generalized across genders and different age groups. The second study yielded that external control beliefs significantly mediated the link between affiliation with deviant peers and aggression, with affiliation with deviant peers at T1 predicting external control beliefs at T2 and external control beliefs at T1 predicting aggressive behavior at T2. Again, the analyses provided no evidence for gender and age specific variations in the proposed pathways. In the third study, three distinct risk groups were identified, made up of a large non-risk group, with low scores on all risk measures, a group characterized by high scores on social rejection (SR group), and a group with the highest scores on measures of affiliation with deviant peers and academic failure (APAF group). Importantly, risk group membership was differentially associated with reactive and proactive aggression. Only membership in the SR group at T1 was associated with the development of reactive aggression at T2 and only membership in the APAF group at T1 predicted proactive aggression at T2. Additionally, proactive aggression at T1 predicted membership in the APAF group at T2, indicating a reciprocal relationship between both constructs. Conclusion: The results demonstrated that aggression causes severe behavioral deficits in social and academic domains which promote future aggression by increasing individuals’ tendency to affiliate with deviant peers. The stimulation of external control beliefs provides an explanation for deviant peers’ effect on the progression and intensification of aggression. Finally, multiple developmental risks were shown to co-occur within individuals and to be differentially predictive of reactive and proactive aggression. The findings of this doctoral dissertation have possible implications for the conceptualization of prevention and intervention programs aimed to reduce aggression in middle childhood and adolescence. N2 - Hintergrund: Aggression ist ein Verhaltensproblem, das mit zahlreichen Entwicklungsherausforderungen der mittleren Kindheit und Adoleszenz interferiert. Besonders in der Peer- und in der akademischen Domäne lässt sich beobachten, dass aggressiven Kindern und Jugendlichen häufig soziale Lernerfahrungen fehlen, die bedeutsam für einen normativen Übergang in das Erwachsenenalter sind. Die resultierenden Entwicklungsdefizite sind dabei nicht nur an sich problematisch, sondern weisen zudem die Tendenz auf, über Rückkopplungsschleifen zu der Chronifizierung aggressiven Verhaltens beizutragen. Die Zielsetzung der vorliegenden Dissertation war die Identifikation und Untersuchung von multiplen Risikofaktoren in der Peer- und in der akademischen Domäne im Entwicklungsprozess aggressiven Verhaltens in der mittleren Kindheit und Jugend. Dabei wurde die Relevanz einer Anbindung an deviante Peers, von sozialer Zurückweisung und schulischen Misserfolg sowie die Rolle von externalen Kontrollüberzeugungen betrachtet. Methode: Drei Studien mit drei (Studie 1) bzw. zwei Messzeitpunkten (Studie 2 und 3) adressierten die zentralen Forschungsfragen. Die erste Studie untersuchte die Interrelation von sozialer Zurückweisung, schulischen Misserfolg und devianten Peers in der Ätiologie antisozialen Verhaltens in einer Stichprobe von 1657 Kindern und Jugendlichen im Alter zwischen 6 und 15 Jahren. Die zweite Studie überprüfte die Entwicklung von externalen Kontrollüberzeugungen als einen zugrundeliegenden Mechanismus in der Beziehung zwischen Anbindung an deviante Peers und Aggression in einer Stichprobe von 1466 Kindern und Jugendlichen im Alter zwischen 9 und 19 Jahren. Die dritte Studie erweiterte die Befunde von Studie 1 und Studie 2 durch die Untersuchung des differentiellen Vorhersagepotenzials von Kombinationen von Risikofaktoren für die Entwicklung unterschiedlicher Aggressionsfunktionen. In einer Stichprobe von 1479 männlichen und weiblichen Versuchsteilnehmern im Alter zwischen 9 und 19 Jahren wurden zuerst mittels latenter Profilanalyse Risikoprofile von sozialer Zurückweisung, schulischen Misserfolgs und der Anbindung an deviante Peers ermittelt. In einem zweiten Schritt wurden prospektive Pfade zwischen den beobachteten Risikoprofilen und reaktiver und proaktiver Aggression analysiert. Ergebnisse: Die Ergebnisse der ersten Studie zeigten signifikante Assoziationen zwischen antisozialem Verhalten zu MZP 1 und sozialer Zurückweisung und schulischem Misserfolg zu MZP 2. Beide Mechanismen unterstützten die Anbindung an deviante Peers zu MZP 2, welche antisoziales Verhalten zu MZP 3 vorhersagte. Bei den beobachteten Entwicklungspfaden zeigten sich keine statistisch bedeutsamen Geschlechts- oder Alterseffekte. Die Ergebnisse der zweiten Studie ergaben, dass die Entwicklung von externalen Kontrollüberzeugungen signifikant den Pfad von Anbindung an deviante Peers zu MZP 1 zu Aggression zu MZP 2 vermittelte. Erneut ließ sich keine Evidenz für alters- oder geschlechtsspezifische Effekte bei den Entwicklungspfaden beobachten. In der dritten Studie ergaben sich drei distinkte Risikoprofile: eine Non-Risiko-Gruppe, eine Gruppe, die durch ein hohes Maß an sozialer Zurückweisung charakterisiert war (SR-Gruppe) und eine Gruppe mit hohen Werten auf den Maßen des schulischen Misserfolgs und der Anbindung an deviante Peers (APAF-Gruppe). Erwartungsgemäß zeigte sich, dass nur die Mitgliedschaft in der SR-Gruppe zu MZP 1 signifikant mit reaktiver Aggression zu MZP 2 assoziiert war und nur die Mitgliedschaft in der APAF-Gruppe zu MZP 1 die Entwicklung proaktiver Aggression zu MZP 2 vorhersagte. Zudem ließ sich eine signifikante Assoziation zwischen proaktiver Aggression zu MZP 1 und der Mitgliedschaft in der APAF-Gruppe zu MZP 2 beobachten, was auf eine reziproke Beziehung der Konstrukte schließen lässt. Schlussfolgerung: Die Ergebnisse der drei Studien verdeutlichen das Potenzial aggressiven Verhaltens, eine Sequenz an negativen Erfahrungen in der Peer- und der akademischen Domäne zu evozieren. Insbesondere Erlebnisse sozialer Exklusion und schulischen Misserfolgs zeigten sich als kritische soziale Reaktionen, die eine selektive Anbindung an deviante Peers begünstigen und zu einer langfristigen Stabilisierung und Chronifizierung aggressiven Verhaltens führen können. Die Entwicklung von externalen Kontrollüberzeugungen bietet dabei einen möglichen Erklärungsansatz für den Einfluss von devianten Peers auf die Entwicklung aggressiven Verhaltens. Zudem zeigte sich, dass Entwicklungsrisiken dazu tendieren, komorbid aufzutreten und dass diese Kombinationen von Risikofaktoren ein unterschiedliches Vorhersagepotenzial für reaktive und proaktive Aggression besitzen. Die Befunde dieser Doktorarbeit bieten mögliche Anknüpfungspunkte für die Gestaltung und Implementation von Interventionen zur Reduktion aggressiven Verhaltens in der mittleren Kindheit und Adoleszenz. However, because most of the studies were cross-sectional and focussed on older children, the causal relationships could not be fully determined in childhood. The current study explores the role of weight stigma in body dissatisfaction and eating behaviours. The sample consisted of 773 girls and 713 boys, aged 6–11 years, who completed surveys assessing weight stigma experiences, body dissatisfaction and eating behaviours at two points of measurement, approximately one year apart. The children's external and disordered eating was rated via parental questionnaires. As expected, the pattern of the associations between weight status, weight stigma, body dissatisfaction and eating behaviours differed by gender. Experience of weight stigma in girls led to external and restrained eating one year later, whereas in boys no such association was observed. Body dissatisfaction mediated the association between weight stigma and restrained eating behaviours in girls, whereas in boys, body dissatisfaction directly influenced restrained eating behaviours. However, in both girls and boys weight status predicted body dissatisfaction and disordered eating, while weight stigma did not have a direct effect on disordered eating. Results suggest that interventions involving weight stigma should be a part of eating disorder prevention programmes, and gender-specific pathways should be considered. The mindfulness facets-TEI-emotional distress section of the mediation model revealed partial mediation for the mindfulness facets Act with awareness (Act/Aware) and Accept without judgment (Accept); inconsistent mediation was found for the Describe facet. The serial two-mediator model included three mediational pathways that may link each of the four mindfulness facets with multiple health behaviors. Eight out of 12 indirect effects reached significance and fully mediated the links between Act/Aware and Describe to multiple health behaviors; partial mediation was found for Accept. The mindfulness facet Observe was most relevant for multiple health behaviors, but its relation was not amenable to mediation. Implications of the findings will be discussed. Based on current evidence and consensus-based guidelines, such as the Association of the Scientific Medical Societies in Germany (AWMF) S3 treatment guidelines for unipolar depressive disorders in children and adolescents, state of the art diagnostic procedures and treatment recommendations are proposed. Diagnostic procedures and differential diagnoses as well as differential indications and treatment planning are reported in detail. In the treatment section the focus is on cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), which is currently the best evaluated psychological treatment form for depressive disorders in children and adolescents. Moreover, we examined whether training reduced the frequency of subsequent dyslexic problems. Method: 25 children at risk of developing dyslexia were trained with Horen, Lauschen, Lernen 1 und 2 (Kuspert & Schneider, 2008; Plume & Schneider, 2004) by their kindergarten teachers and were compared with 60 untrained at-risk children. Results:The training revealed a significant short-term effect: The phonological awareness of trained at-risk children increased significantly over that of untrained at-risk children. However, there were no differences in phonological awareness, spelling, and reading ability between the first-graders in the training and control group. Furthermore, reading problems were reduced in the training group. Conclusions: In the future, phonological awareness as well as additional predictors should be included when identifying children vulnerable to developing dyslexia. Moreover, in order to prevent dyslexia, additional prerequisite deficits need to be identified, alleviated, and their effects evaluated. Methods: 82 dyads of dementia patients and their spousal caregivers were included in a cross-sectional assessment from a prospective study. QoL was assessed with the Quality of Life in Alzheimer's Disease scale (QoL-AD) for dementia patients and the WHO Quality of Life-BREF for spousal caregivers. Perceived stress was measured with the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-14). Both partners were assessed with the Dyadic Coping Inventory (DCI). Analyses of correlation as well as regression models including mediator analyses were performed. Results: We found negative correlations between stress and QoL in both partners (QoL-AD: r = -0.62; p < 0.001; WHO-QOL Overall: r = -0.27; p = 0.02). Spousal caregivers had a significantly lower DCI total score than dementia patients (p < 0.001). Dyadic coping was a significant mediator of the relationship between stress and QoL in spousal caregivers (z = 0.28; p = 0.02), but not in dementia patients. Likewise, relationship quality significantly mediated the relationship between stress and QoL in caregivers only (z = -2.41; p = 0.02). Conclusions: This study identified dyadic coping as a mediator on the relationship between stress and QoL in (caregiving) partners of dementia patients. In patients, however, we found a direct negative effect of stress on QoL. The findings suggest the importance of stress reducing and dyadic interventions for dementia patients and their partners, respectively. There is consensus that CD is likely caused by the convergence of many different factors, including genetic and adverse environmental factors. There is ample evidence of gene-environment interactions in the etiology of CD on a behavioral level regarding genetically sensitive designs and candidate gene-driven approaches, most prominently and consistently represented by MAOA. However, conclusive indications of causal GxE patterns are largely lacking. Inconsistent findings, lack of replication and methodological limitations remain a major challenge. Likewise, research addressing the identification of affected brain pathways which reflect plausible biological mechanisms underlying GxE is still very sparse. Future research will have to take multilevel approaches into account, which combine genetic, environmental, epigenetic, personality, neural and hormone perspectives. A better understanding of relevant GxE patterns in the etiology of CD might enable researchers to design customized treatment options (e.g. biofeedback interventions) for specific subgroups of patients. The present study aimed to clarify the impact of this interaction on neural activity in aggression-related brain systems. Functional magnetic resonance imaging was performed in 125 healthy adults from a high-risk community sample followed since birth. DNA was genotyped for the MAOA-VNTR (variable number of tandem repeats). Exposure to childhood life stress (CLS) between the ages of 4 and 11 years was assessed using a standardized parent interview, aggression by the Youth/Young Adult Self-Report between the ages of 15 and 25 years, and the VIRA-R (Vragenlijst Instrumentele En Reactieve Agressie) at the age of 15 years. Significant interactions were obtained between MAOA genotype, CLS, and sex relating to amygdala, hippocampus, and anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) response, respectively. Activity in the amygdala and hippocampus during emotional face-matching increased with the level of CLS in male MAOA-L, while decreasing in male MAOA-H, with the reverse pattern present in females. Findings in the opposite direction in the ACC during a flanker NoGo task suggested that increased emotional activity coincided with decreased inhibitory control. Moreover, increasing amygdala activity was associated with higher Y(A)SR aggression in male MAOA-L and female MAOA-H carriers. Likewise, a significant association between amygdala activity and reactive aggression was detected in female MAOA-H carriers. The results point to a moderating role of sex in the MAOAx CLS interaction for intermediate phenotypes of emotional and inhibitory processing, suggesting a possible mechanism in conferring susceptibility to violence-related disorders. Recent studies have supported the existence of gene × environment interactions, with early experiences playing a key role. In the present study, the effects of prenatal nicotine exposure, MAOA genotype and their interaction on aggressive behavior during young adulthood were examined. In a sample of 272 young adults (129 males, 143 females) from an epidemiological cohort study, smoking during pregnancy was measured with a standardized parent interview at the offspring’s age of 3 months. Aggressive behavior was assessed between the ages of 19 and 25 years using the Young Adult Self-Report. DNA was genotyped for the MAOA 5′ untranslated region variable number of tandem repeats polymorphism (VNTR). Results revealed a significant interaction between MAOA and smoking during pregnancy, indicating higher levels of aggressive behavior in young adults carrying the MAOA low-expressing genotype who had experienced prenatal nicotine exposure (n = 8, p = .025). In contrast, in carriers of the MAOA high-expressing genotype, maternal smoking during pregnancy had no effect on aggressive behavior during young adulthood (n = 20, p = .145). This study extends earlier findings demonstrating an interaction between MAOA genotype and prenatal nicotine exposure on aggressive behavior into young adulthood. The results point to the long-term adverse effects of smoking during pregnancy on the offspring’s mental health, possibly underlining the importance of smoking cessation during pregnancy. According to the nature of the study (particularly sample size and power), analyses are exploratory and results need to be interpreted cautiously. Previous evidence insinuated but never fully explored the relationship that metrical structure has to syntactic comprehension, the comparability of these processes across music and language domains, and the respective role of individual differences. This dissertation aimed to investigate neurocognitive entrainment to meter in music and language, the impact that neurocognitive entrainment had on syntactic comprehension, and whether individual differences in musical expertise, temporal perception and working memory played a role during these processes. A theoretical framework was developed, which linked neural entrainment, cognitive entrainment, and syntactic comprehension while detailing previously documented effects of individual differences on meter perception and syntactic comprehension. The framework was developed in both music and language domains and was tested using behavioral and EEG methods across three studies (seven experiments). In order to satisfy empirical evaluation of neurocognitive entrainment and syntactic aspects of the framework, original melodies and sentences were composed. Each item had four permutations: regular and irregular metricality, based on the hierarchical organization of strong and weak notes and syllables, and preferred and non-preferred syntax, based on structurally alternate endings. The framework predicted — for both music and language domains — greater neurocognitive entrainment in regular compared to irregular metricality conditions, and accordingly, better syntactic integration in regular compared to irregular metricality conditions. Individual differences among participants were expected for both entrainment and syntactic processes. Altogether, the dissertation was able to support a holistic account of neurocognitive entrainment to musical meter and its subsequent influence on syntactic integration of melodies, with musician participants. The theoretical predictions were not upheld in the language domain with musician participants, but initial behavioral evidence in combination with previous EEG evidence suggest that perhaps non-musician language EEG data would support the framework’s predictions. Musicians’ deviation from hypothesized results in the language domain were suspected to reflect heightened perception of acoustic features stemming from musical training, which caused current ‘overly’ regular stimuli to distract the cognitive system. The individual-differences approach was vindicated by the surfacing of two factors scores, Verbal Working Memory and Time and Pitch Discrimination, which in turn correlated with multiple experimental data across the three studies. Für die Sprachverarbeitung konnten diese Zusammenhänge in der hier getesteten Stichprobe von Musikern nicht nachgewiesen werden. Frühere Befunde aus Verhaltens- und EEG-Studien legen jedoch nahe, dass Untersuchungen mit Nichtmusikern ein solches Ergebnis erbringen könnten. N2 - The following thesis assessed instrumental learning on a behavioural and neuronal level with respect to the influence of chronic stress exposure (Lifetime Stress Inventory, Holmes und Rahe 1962) and cognition (fluid and crystallized IQ) in healthy subjects. In experimental psychology different experiments have been developed to assess goal–directed as compared to habitual control over instrumental decisions. More recently sequential decision-making tasks have been designed to assess the degree of goal-directed vs. habitual choice behavior in terms of an influential computational theory of model-based compared to model-free behavioral control. In the present thesis, a devaluation paradigm and a sequential decision-making task were used in a first step to address the question of construct validity when using the terms model-based vs goal-directed and model-free vs habitual behaviour. In a second step the differential influence of chronic stress exposure and fluid IQ on these decision making processes were assessed. In a last step we discussed the relevance of changes in decision making processes for the development and maintenance of Alcohol Use Disorder. However, this approach to studying proactivity has not yet acknowledged its potential implications for the actor’s well-being. Drawing on the fact that resources at work are limited and that the workplace is a social system characterized by interdependencies, we proposed that daily proactivity could have a negative effect on daily well-being. We furthermore proposed that this effect should be mediated by work overload and negative affect. We conducted a daily diary study (N = 72) to test the potential negative effects of proactivity on daily well-being. Data was collected across 3 consecutive work days. During several daily measurement occasions, participants reported proactivity, work overload, negative affect, and fatigue. They also provided 4 saliva samples per day, from which cortisol was assayed. Based on the 4 samples, a measure of daily cortisol output was produced. Multilevel analyses showed that daily proactivity was positively associated with higher daily cortisol output. The positive association of daily proactivity with bedtime fatigue was marginally significant. There was no support for a mediating effect of work overload and negative affect. Implications for theory-building on the proactivity–well-being link are discussed. Using a combination of behavioral and neuroimaging techniques, we show that prosocial decision-making is modulated by relationship closeness. In an iterated social exchange, participants were more likely to cooperate with their partner compared to an unknown person by accepting unfair exchanges. Importantly, this effect was not influenced by how resources were actually being shared with one’s partner. The medial prefrontal cortex (MPFC) was activated when the partner, rather than the unknown person, behaved unfairly and, in the same context, the MPFC demonstrated greater functional connectivity with the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (DACC). MPFC–DACC connectivity was inversely associated with participants’ tendency to “forgive” their partner for unfairness as well as performance outside the scanner on a behavioral measure of forgiveness. We conclude that relationship closeness modulates a neural network comprising the MPFC/DACC during economic exchanges. In two experiments, we investigated how the selective attenuation of spatial frequencies in the central or the peripheral visual field affects eye-movement behavior during real-world scene viewing. Gaze-contingent low-pass or high-pass filters with varying filter levels (i.e., cutoff frequencies; Experiment 1) or filter sizes (Experiment 2) were applied. Compared to unfiltered control conditions, mean fixation durations increased most with central high-pass and peripheral low-pass filtering. Increasing filter size prolonged fixation durations with peripheral filtering, but not with central filtering. Increasing filter level prolonged fixation durations with low-pass filtering, but not with high-pass filtering. These effects indicate that fixation durations are not always longer under conditions of increased processing difficulty. Saccade amplitudes largely adapted to processing difficulty: amplitudes increased with central filtering and decreased with peripheral filtering; the effects strengthened with increasing filter size and filter level. In addition, we observed a trade-off between saccade timing and saccadic selection, since saccade amplitudes were modulated when fixation durations were unaffected by the experimental manipulations. We conclude that interactions of perception and gaze control are highly sensitive to experimental manipulations of input images as long as the residual information can still be accessed for gaze control. A key issue for understanding eye-movement control during scene viewing is the roles of central and peripheral vision, which process information differently and are therefore specialized for different tasks (object identification and peripheral target selection respectively). Yet, rather little is known about the contributions of central and peripheral processing to gaze control and how they are coordinated within a fixation during scene viewing. Additionally, the factors determining fixation durations have long been neglected, as scene perception research has mainly been focused on the factors determining fixation locations. The present thesis aimed at increasing the knowledge on how central and peripheral vision contribute to spatial and, in particular, to temporal aspects of eye-movement control during scene viewing. In a series of five experiments, we varied processing difficulty in the central or the peripheral visual field by attenuating selective parts of the spatial-frequency spectrum within these regions. Furthermore, we developed a computational model on how foveal and peripheral processing might be coordinated for the control of fixation duration. The thesis provides three main findings. First, the experiments indicate that increasing processing demands in central or peripheral vision do not necessarily prolong fixation durations; instead, stimulus-independent timing is adapted when processing becomes too difficult. Second, peripheral vision seems to play a prominent role in the control of fixation durations, a notion also implemented in the computational model. The model assumes that foveal and peripheral processing proceed largely in parallel and independently during fixation, but can interact to modulate fixation duration. Thus, we propose that the variation in fixation durations can in part be accounted for by the interaction between central and peripheral processing. Third, the experiments indicate that saccadic behavior largely adapts to processing demands, with a bias of avoiding spatial-frequency filtered scene regions as saccade targets. We demonstrate that the observed saccade amplitude patterns reflect corresponding modulations of visual attention. The present work highlights the individual contributions and the interplay of central and peripheral vision for gaze control during scene viewing, particularly for the control of fixation duration. Our results entail new implications for computational models and for experimental research on scene perception. Die vorliegende Arbeit hatte zum Ziel, das Wissen über die Beiträge des zentralen und peripheren Sehens zu räumlichen, aber vor allem zu zeitlichen Aspekten der Blicksteuerung in Szenen zu erweitern. In einer Serie von fünf Experimenten haben wir die Verarbeitungsschwierigkeit im zentralen oder peripheren visuellen Feld durch die Abschwächung selektiver Raumfrequenzanteile innerhalb dieser Regionen variiert. Des Weiteren haben wir ein computationales Modell zur Koordination von fovealer und peripherer Verarbeitung für die Kontrolle von Fixationsdauern entwickelt. Die Arbeit liefert drei Hauptbefunde. Klassen BT - the development, implementation and evaluation of an eating disorder prevention program for the 7th and 8th classes N2 - Objectives The aim of this doctoral thesis was to investigate the efficacy of a German skills-based primary prevention program for partial-syndrome and full-syndrome eating disorders (Mainzer Schultraining zur Essstörungsprävention (MaiStep)) in reducing eating disorder symptoms as the primary outcome and associated psychopathology as a secondary outcome. Design Randomized Controlled Trial (RCT), three-intervention-group design, with two intervention groups and one active control group with a 3-month and 12-month follow-up. Setting A project in nine schools within the state of Rhineland-Palatine, Germany; funded by the Ministry of Health and Social Affairs (MSAGD) and the Ministry of Education, Culture and Research (MBWWK). Participants 1,654 adolescents (female/male: 781/873; mean age: 13.1±0.7; BMI: 20.0±3.5) recruited from randomly selected schools. Interventions The implementation and development of the skills based program was based on a systematic review of 63 scientific articles regarding eating disorder prevention in childhood and adolescence. One intervention group was conducted by psychologists and one by trained teachers. The active control group was performed by trained teachers using a stress and addiction prevention program. Main outcome measures The primary outcome measure was the incidence of partial-syndrome and full-syndrome eating disorders after completion of the program; secondary outcomes included self-reported questionnaires about eating disorder pathology. Results MaiStep did not reveal significant group differences at 3-month follow-up but showed a significant difference between the intervention groups and the active control group for partial anorexia nervosa (CHI²(2)) = 8.74, p = .01**) and partial bulimia nervosa (CHI²(2) = 7.25, p = .02*) at 12-month follow-up. Consistent with the primary outcome, the secondary measures were even more effective in the intervention groups at 12-month follow-up. The subscales of the Eating Disorder Inventory (EDI-2) drive of thinness (F (2, 355) = 3.94, p = .02*) and perfectionism (F (2, 355) = 4.19, p = .01**) and the Body Image Avoidance Questionnaire (BIAQ) (F (2, 525) = 18.79, p = .01**) showed significant differences for the intervention groups and demonstrated the effectiveness of MaiStep. Conclusions MaiStep has shown to be a successful program to prevent eating disorders in adolescents at 13 to 15 years of age. In addition, MaiStep was equally effective when conducted by teachers compared to psychologists suggesting feasibility of implementation in real world settings. Innerhalb der randomisiert kontrollierten Studie gab es zwei Interventionsgruppe und eine aktive Kontrollgruppe. 1.654 Jugendliche (weiblich/männlich: 781/873; mittleres Alter: 13.1±0.7; BMI: 20.0±3.5) konnten für die Studie, an zufällig ausgewählten Schulen in Rheinland-Pfalz, rekrutiert werden. Die Entwicklung des Präventionsprogramms basiert auf einem systematischen Literaturreview von 63 wissenschaftlichen Studien über die Prävention von Essstörungen im Kindes- und Jugendalter. Eine Interventionsgruppe wurde durch Psychologinnen/Psychologen und eine zweite durch Lehrkräfte angeleitet. Das in der aktiven Kontrollgruppe durchgeführte Sucht- bzw. Stresspräventionsprogramm wurde durch Lehrkräfte geleitet. MaiStep zeigte zur 3-Monatskatamnese keine signifikanten Effekte im Vergleich zur aktiven Kontrollgruppe. Allerdings zeigten sich nach 12 Monaten multiple signifikante Effekte zwischen den Interventions- und der aktiven Kontrollgruppe. Im Rahmen der Analyse des primären Parameters wurden in den Interventionsgruppen signifikant weniger Jugendliche mit einer partiellen Anorexia nervosa (CHI²(2) = 8.74, p = .01**) und/oder partiellen Bulimia nervosa (CHI²(2) = 7.25, p = .02*) gefunden. Methodik: Suizidberichte aus fünf großen deutschsprachigen Jugendmagazinen wurden mithilfe qualitativer Inhaltsanalyse im Hinblick auf Geschlecht, dargestellte Motive, Suizid(versuchs)methoden, positive und negative Darstellungsweisen, Schuldzuweisungen und Abweichungen von Medienempfehlungen zur Berichterstattung über Suizid analysiert. Die Suizidzahlen 2 Wochen vor und nach dem Erscheinen von Suizidberichten wurden verglichen. Ergebnisse: 59 Berichte wurden identifiziert. Die häufigste Berichterstattung zum Thema Suizid fand sich in der Zeitschrift Bravo, wobei es zu einer leichten Überrepräsentation weiblicher Suizide und insgesamt zu einer Unterrepräsentation von Suizidversuchen kam. Entsprechend der Epidemiologie suizidalen Verhaltens wurde Sturz in die Tiefe am häufigsten bei Mädchen und Erhängen bei den Jungen beschrieben. Bei den dargestellten Motiven zeigte sich, dass wichtige Faktoren wie psychiatrische Erkrankungen kaum Erwähnung fanden. Während Suizidentinnen häufig positiv dargestellt wurden, wurden Suizidenten häufiger negativ dargestellt. Implizite Schuldzuweisungen wurden vorwiegend den Eltern zugeschrieben. Es zeigte sich kein Hinweis auf einen Werther-Effekt nach Berichterstattung. The present study aimed to explore the electrophysiological correlates of the effects of processing fluency on subsequent recognition memory by using an event-related potential (ERP) approach. The masked repetition priming paradigm was used to manipulate processing fluency in the study phase, and the R/K paradigm was utilized to investigate which recognition memory process (familiarity or recollection) was affected by processing fluency in the test phase. Converging behavioral and ERP results indicated that increased processing fluency impaired subsequent recollection. Results from the analysis of ERP priming effects in the study phase indicated that increased perceptual processing fluency of object features, reflected by the N/P 190 priming effect, can hinder encoding activities, reflected by the LPC priming effect, which leads to worse subsequent recollection based recognition memory. These results support the idea that processing fluency can influence subsequent recognition memory and provide a potential neural mechanism underlying this effect. However, further studies are needed to examine whether processing fluency can affect subsequent familiarity. So far empirical investigations of individuals' motivation for NE however have been hampered by the lack of theoretical foundation. This study aimed to apply drug instrumentalization theory to user motivation for NE. We argue that NE should be defined and analyzed from a behavioral perspective rather than in terms of the characteristics of substances used for NE. In the empirical study we explored user behavior by analyzing relationships between drug options (use over-the-counter products, prescription drugs, illicit drugs) and postulated drug instrumentalization goals (e.g., improved cognitive performance, counteracting fatigue, improved social interaction). Questionnaire data from 1438 university students were subjected to exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis to address the question of whether analysis of drug instrumentalization should be based on the assumption that users are aiming to achieve a certain goal and choose their drug accordingly or whether NE behavior is more strongly rooted in a decision to try or use a certain drug option. We used factor mixture modeling to explore whether users could be separated into qualitatively different groups defined by a shared "goal X drug option" configuration. Our results indicate, first, that individuals decisions about NE are eventually based on personal attitude to drug options (e.g., willingness to use an over-the-counter product but not to abuse prescription drugs) rather than motivated by desire to achieve a specific goal (e.g., fighting tiredness) for which different drug options might be tried. Second, data analyses suggested two qualitatively different classes of users. Both predominantly used over-the-counter products, but "neuroenhancers" might be characterized by a higher propensity to instrumentalize over-the-counter products for virtually all investigated goals whereas "fatigue-fighters" might be inclined to use over-the-counter products exclusively to fight fatigue. We believe that psychological investigations like these are essential, especially for designing programs to prevent risky behavior. Our aim was to estimate dementia risk factors in German primary care patients. Methods: The case-control study included primary care patients (70-90 years) with first diagnosis of dementia (all-cause) during the index period (01/2010-12/2014) (Disease Analyzer, Germany), and controls without dementia matched (1:1) to cases on the basis of age, sex, type of health insurance, and physician. Practice visit records were used to verify that there had been 10 years of continuous follow-up prior to the index date. Multivariate logistic regression models were fitted with dementia as a dependent variable and the potential predictors. Results: The mean age for the 11,956 cases and the 11,956 controls was 80.4 (SD: 5.3) years. 39.0% of them were male and 1.9% had private health insurance. In the multivariate regression model, the following variables were linked to a significant extent with an increased risk of dementia: diabetes (OR: 1.17; 95% CI: 1.10-1.24), lipid metabolism (1.07; 1.00-1.14), stroke incl. TIA (1.68; 1.57-1.80), Parkinson's disease (PD) (1.89; 1.64-2.19), intracranial injury (1.30; 1.00-1.70), coronary heart disease (1.06; 1.00-1.13), mild cognitive impairment (MCI) (2.12; 1.82-2.48), mental and behavioral disorders due to alcohol use (1.96; 1.50-2.57). The use of statins (OR: 0.94; 0.90-0.99), proton-pump inhibitors (PPI) (0.93; 0.90-0.97), and antihypertensive drugs (0.96, 0.94-0.99) were associated with a decreased risk of developing dementia. Conclusions: Risk factors for dementia found in this study are consistent with the literature. Nevertheless, the associations between statin, PPI and antihypertensive drug use, and decreased risk of dementia need further investigations. Weltweit leiden 47,5 Millionen Menschen unter Demenz und diese Zahl wird sich voraussichtlich bis zum Jahr 2050 verdreifachen. In den vorliegenden Studien wurden zum Einem die Faktoren, welche mit dem Risiko einhergehen eine Demenz zu entwickeln, analysiert. Zum Anderen wurde die Persistenz der medikamentösen Behandlung von depressiven Zuständen mit Antidepressiva sowie die Persistenz der medikamentösen Behandlung von Verhaltensstörungen, therapiert mit Antipsychotika, bei Demenzpatienten untersucht. Durchführung: Alle drei Studien basieren auf den Daten der IMS Disease Analyzer-Datenbank. Die Daten der Disease Analyzer-Datenbank werden über standardisierte Schnittstellen direkt monatlich aus dem Praxiscomputer generiert. Die Daten werden vor der Übertragung verschlüsselt und entsprechen in Umfang und Detaillierungsgrad der Patientenakte. Risikofaktoren für eine Demenzdiagnose Methode: Insgesamt wurden in die Studie 11.956 Patienten mit einer Erstdiagnose (Indexdatum) einer Demenz (ICD 10: F01, F03, G30) zwischen Januar 2010 und Dezember 2014 eingeschlossen. 11.956 Kontrollpatienten (ohne Demenz) wurden den Patienten nach Alter, Geschlecht, Art der Krankenversicherung und Arzt zugeordnet. In beiden Fällen wurden die Praxisaufzeichnungen dazu verwendet, sicherzustellen, dass die Patienten vor dem Indexdatum jeweils 10 Jahre kontinuierlich beobachtet worden waren. Insgesamt wurden 23.912 Personen betrachtet. Mehrere Erkrankungen, die möglicherweise mit Demenz assoziiert sind, wurden anhand von allgemeinärztlichen Diagnosen bestimmt (ICD-10-Codes): Diabetes (E10-E14), Hypertonie (I10), Adipositas (E66), Hyperlipidämie (E78), Schlaganfall (einschließlich transitorische ischämische Attacke, TIA) (I63, I64, G45), Parkinson-Krankheit (G20, G21), intrakranielle Verletzung (S06), koronare Herzkrankheit (I20-I25), leichte kognitive Beeinträchtigung (F06) und psychische und Verhaltensstörungen durch Alkohol (F10). Das Vorhandensein mehrerer Medikamente, wie z. B. Statine, Protonenpumpenhemmer und Antihypertensiva (einschließlich Diuretika, Beta-Blocker, Calciumkanalblocker, ACE-Hemmer und Angiotensin-II), wurde ebenfalls bemessen. Ergebnisse: Das Durchschnittsalter für die 11.956 Demenzpatienten und die 11.956 der Kontrollkohorte war 80,4 (SD 5,3) Jahre. 39,0% der waren männlich. In dem multivariaten Regressionsmodell, wurden folgende Variablen mit einem erhöhten Risiko von Demenz in einem signifikanten Einfluß assoziiert: milde kognitive Beeinträchtigung (MCI) (OR: 2,12), psychische und Verhaltensstörungen durch Alkohol (1,96), Parkinson-Krankheit (PD) (1,89), Schlaganfall (1,68), intrakranielle Verletzung (1,30), Diabetes (1,17), Fettstoffwechselstörung (1,07), koronare Herzkrankheit (1,06). Der Einsatz von Antihypertensiva (0,96), Statinen (OR: 0,94) und Protonen-Pumpen-Inhibitoren (PPI) (0,93) wurden mit einem verringerten Risiko der Entwicklung von Demenz. Schlussfolgerung: Die gefundenen Risikofaktoren für Demenz stehen in Einklang mit der Literatur. Nichtsdestotrotz bedürfen die Zusammenhänge zwischen der Verwendung von Statinen, PPI und Antihypertensiva und einem verringerten Demenzrisiko weiterer Untersuchungen. Persistenz der Behandlung mit Antidepressiva bei Patienten mit Demenz Methode: Patienten wurden ausgewählt, wenn bei ihnen im Zeitraum zwischen Januar 2004 und Dezember 2013 eine Demenzdiagnose (ICD 10: F01, F03, G30) und eine erste Verordnung eines trizyklischen Antidepressivums oder selektiven Serotonin- Wiederaufnahmehemmers (SSRI) oder Serotonin-Noradrenalin-Wiederaufnahmehemmers (SSNRI) vorlagen. Ausgewählte Patienten wurden über einen Zeitraum von bis zu zwei Jahre nach dem Indexdatum beobachtet. Das letzte Nachbeobachtungsdatum eines Patienten war der 31. Dezember 2014. Insgesamt standen 12.281 Patienten für die Persistenzanalyse zur Verfügung. Der Hauptzielparameter war die Abbruchrate der Antidepressivabehandlung innerhalb von sechs Monaten nach dem Indexdatum. Behandlungsabbruch wurde definiert als ein Zeitraum von 90 Tagen ohne diese Therapie. Als demographische Daten wurden Alter, Art der Krankenversicherung (privat oder gesetzlich), Art der Praxis (Neurologe oder Allgemeinmediziner) und Praxisregion (Ost- oder Westdeutschland) erhoben. Die folgenden Demenzdiagnosen wurden berücksichtigt: Alzheimer-Krankheit (G30), vaskuläre Demenz (F01) und nicht näher bezeichnete Demenz (F03). Darüber hinaus wurde der Charlson-Komorbiditäts-Index als allgemeiner Marker für Komorbidität verwendet. Darüber hinaus wurden die folgenden Diagnosen als Komorbiditäten in die Studie aufgenommen: Depression (ICD 10: F32-33), Delir (F05), Typ-2-Diabetes mellitus (E11, E14), Hypertonie (I10), koronare Herzkrankheit (I24, I25), Schlaganfall (I63, I64), Myokardinfarkt (I21-23) und Herzinsuffizienz (I50). Ergebnisse: Nach sechs Monaten Nachbeobachtung hatten 52,7 % (von 12,281 Demenzpatienten) der mit Antidepressiva behandelten Demenzpatienten die Medikamenteneinnahme abgebrochen. Die multivariaten Regressionsanalysen zeigten ein signifikant geringeres Risiko für einen Behandlungsabbruch bei mit SSRRI oder SSNRI behandelten Patienten verglichen mit Patienten, die trizyklische Antidepressiva einnahmen. Es zeigte sich ein signifikant geringeres Risiko eines Behandlungsabbruchs bei jüngeren Patienten. Schlussfolgerung: Die Ergebnisse zeigen eine unzureichende Persistenz mit Antipsychotika bei Demenzpatienten unter Alltagsbedingungen. Es muss eine Verbesserung erreicht werden, um die in den Richtlinien empfohlene Behandlung sicherzustellen. Persistenz der Behandlung mit Antipsychotika bei Patienten mit Demenz Methode: Diese Studie umfasste Patienten im Alter ab 60 Jahren mit Demenz beliebigen Ursprungs, die zwischen Januar 2009 und Dezember 2013 (Indexdatum) zum ersten Mal Antipsychotikaverordnungen (ATC: N05A) von deutschen Psychiatern erhielten. Der Nachbeobachtungszeitraum endete im Oktober 2015. Die Demenz wurde auf Grundlage der ICD-10-Codes für vaskuläre Demenz (F01), nicht näher bezeichnete Demenz (F03) und Alzheimer-Krankheit (G30) bewertet. Der Hauptzielparameter war die Behandlungspersistenzrate über einen Zeitraum von mehr als 6 Monaten nach dem Indexdatum. Die Persistenz wurde als Therapiezeit ohne Absetzen der Behandlung, definiert als mindestens 180 Tage ohne Antipsychotikatherapie, geschätzt. Alle Patienten wurden für eine Dauer von bis zu zwei Jahren ab ihrem Indexdatum beobachtet. Gleichzeitig auftretende Erkrankungen wurden anhand von Diagnosen (ICD-10-Codes) von Depression (F32, F33), Parkinson-Krankheit (G20), psychischer Störungen aufgrund bekannter physiologischer Erkrankungen (F06) und Persönlichkeits- und Verhaltensstörungen aufgrund physiologischer Erkrankungen (F07) bestimmt. Als demographische Daten wurden Alter, Geschlecht und Art der Krankenversicherung (privat/gesetzlich) erhoben. Ergebnisse: 12,979 Demenzpatienten mit einem Durchschnittsalter von 82 Jahre (52.1% leben in Pflegeheimen) wurden in diese Studie analysiert. Nach zwei Jahren Nachbeobachtung hatten 54,8 %, 57,2 %, 61,1 % bzw. 65,4 % der Patienten zwischen 60-69, 70-79, 80-89 bzw. 90-99 Jahren Antipsychotikaverordnungen erhalten (p<0,001). 82,6 % der in Pflegeheimen lebenden Patienten und 76,2 % der Patienten in häuslicher Pflege setzten ihre Behandlung ebenfalls länger als 6 Monate fort; nach zwei Jahren lag der Anteil bei 63,9 % (in Pflegeheimen) bzw. 55,0 % (in häuslicher Pflege) (p<0,001). Schlussfolgerung: Die Studie zeigt, dass der Anteil der mit Antipsychotika behandelten Demenzpatienten sehr hoch ist. Weitere Studien, einschließlich qualitativer Untersuchungen, sind nötig, um die Gründe für dieses Verschreibungsverhalten zu verstehen und zu erklären. We asked N = 349 adults from Germany to rate their justice, rejection, moral disgust, and provocation sensitivity, hostile attribution bias, trait anger, and forms and functions of aggression. The sensitivity measures were mostly positively correlated; particularly those with an egoistic focus, such as victim justice, rejection, and provocation sensitivity, hostile attributions and trait anger as well as those with an altruistic focus, such as observer justice, perpetrator justice, and moral disgust sensitivity. The sensitivity measures had independent and differential effects on forms and functions of aggression when considered simultaneously and when controlling for hostile attributions and anger. They could not be integrated into a single factor of interpersonal sensitivity or reduced to other well-known risk factors for aggression. The sensitivity measures, therefore, require consideration in predicting and preventing aggression. This language-specific emergence of a trochaic bias is supported by the fact that English and German are languages with trochaic predominance in their lexicons, while French is a language with phrase-final lengthening but lacking lexical stress. We explored the emergence of a trochaic bias in bilingual French/German infants, to study whether the developmental trajectory would be similar to monolingual infants and whether amount of relative exposure to the two languages has an impact on the emergence of the bias. Accordingly, we replicated Hohle et al. (2009) with 24 bilingual 6-month-olds learning French and German simultaneously. All infants had been exposed to both languages for 30 to 70% of the time from birth. Using the Head Preference Procedure, infants were presented with two lists of stimuli, one made up of several occurrences of the pseudoword /GAba/ with word-initial stress (trochaic pattern), the second one made up of several occurrences of the pseudoword /gaBA/ with word-final stress (iambic pattern). The stimuli were recorded by a native German female speaker. Results revealed that these French/German bilingual 6-month olds have a trochaic bias (as evidenced by a preference to listen to the trochaic pattern). Hence, their listening preference is comparable to that of monolingual German-learning 6-month-olds, but differs from that of monolingual French-learning 6-month-olds who did not show any preference (Noble et al., 2009). Moreover, the size of the trochaic bias in the bilingual infants was not correlated with their amount of exposure to German. The present results thus establish that the development of a trochaic bias in simultaneous bilinguals is not delayed compared to monolingual German-learning infants (Hohle et al., 2009) and is rather independent of the amount of exposure to German relative to French. The present study investigated the combined effects of these factors on 12-month-olds’ action prediction. Infants’ (N = 49) goal-directed gaze shifts were recorded as they observed 14 trials in which either a human hand or a mechanical claw reached for a small goal area (low-saliency goal) or a large goal area (high-saliency goal). Only infants who had observed the human hand reaching for a high-saliency goal fixated the goal object ahead of time, and they rapidly learned to predict the action goal across trials. By contrast, infants in all other conditions did not track the observed action in a predictive manner, and their gaze shifts to the action goal did not change systematically across trials. Thus, high-saliency goals seem to boost infants’ predictive gaze shifts during the observation of human manual actions, but not of actions performed by a mechanical device. This supports the assumption that infants’ action predictions are based on interactive effects of action-relevant object features (e.g., size) and own action experience.
