Based on statistical measures such as the amplitude scatter of the time-averaged mean-squared displacement of individual realizations, the ergodicity breaking and non-Gaussianity parameters, as well as the probability density function P(x, t), we analyze the weakly nonergodic character of the heterogeneous diffusion process and, particularly, the degree of irreproducibility of individual realizations. As we show, the fluctuations between individual realizations increase with growing modulus vertical bar alpha vertical bar of the scaling exponent. The fluctuations appear to diverge when the critical value alpha = 2 is approached, while for even larger alpha the fluctuations decrease, again. At criticality, the power-law behavior of the mean-squared displacement changes to an exponentially fast growth, and the fluctuations of the time-averaged mean-squared displacement do not converge for increasing number of realizations. From a systematic comparison we observe some striking similarities of the heterogeneous diffusion process with the familiar subdiffusive continuous time random walk process with power-law waiting time distribution and diverging characteristic waiting time. Loss-free recombination contacts were realized by combing Al-doped ZnO with either the conducting polymer composite PEDOT:PSS or with a bilayer of ultrathin Al and MoO3. Optimization of these contacts results in tandem cells with high fill factors of 70% and an open circuit voltage close to the sum of those of the sub-cells. This is the best efficiency reported for this type of hybrid tandem cell so far. Optical and electrical device modeling suggests that the efficiency can be increased to similar to 12% on combining a donor polymer with suitable absorption onset with PCBM. We also describe proof-of-principle studies employing light trapping in hybrid tandem solar cells, suggesting that this device architecture has the potential to achieve efficiencies well above 12%. T1 - Very-high energy observations of the galactic center region by veritas IN 2010-2012 JF - The astrophysical journal : an international review of spectroscopy and astronomical physics N2 - The Galactic center is an interesting region for high-energy (0.1-100 GeV) and very-high-energy (E > 100 GeV) gamma-ray observations. Potential sources of GeV/TeV gamma-ray emission have been suggested, e.g., the accretion of matter onto the supermassive black hole, cosmic rays from a nearby supernova remnant (e.g., Sgr A East), particle acceleration in a plerion, or the annihilation of dark matter particles. The Galactic center has been detected by EGRET and by Fermi/LAT in the MeV/GeV energy band. At TeV energies, the Galactic center was detected with moderate significance by the CANGAROO and Whipple 10 m telescopes and with high significance by H.E.S.S., MAGIC, and VERITAS. We present the results from three years of VERITAS observations conducted at large zenith angles resulting in a detection of the Galactic center on the level of 18 standard deviations at energies above similar to 2.5 TeV. The energy spectrum is derived and is found to be compatible with hadronic, leptonic, and hybrid emission models discussed in the literature. Future, more detailed measurements of the high-energy cutoff and better constraints on the high-energy flux variability will help to refine and/or disentangle the individual models. T1 - Discovery of a new Wolf-Rayet star and a candidate star cluster in the Large Magellanic Cloud with Spitzer JF - Monthly notices of the Royal Astronomical Society N2 - We report the first-ever discovery of a Wolf-Rayet (WR) star in the Large Magellanic Cloud via detection of a circular shell with the Spitzer Space Telescope. Follow-up observations with Gemini-South resolved the central star of the shell into two components separated from each other by a parts per thousand 2 arcsec (or a parts per thousand 0.5 pc in projection). One of these components turns out to be a WN3 star with H and He lines both in emission and absorption (we named it BAT99 3a using the numbering system based on extending the Breysacher et al. catalogue). Spectroscopy of the second component showed that it is a B0 V star. Subsequent spectroscopic observations of BAT99 3a with the du Pont 2.5-m telescope and the Southern African Large Telescope revealed that it is a close, eccentric binary system, and that the absorption lines are associated with an O companion star. We analysed the spectrum of the binary system using the non-LTE Potsdam WR (powr) code, confirming that the WR component is a very hot (a parts per thousand 90 kK) WN star. For this star, we derived a luminosity of log L/ L-aS (TM) = 5.45 and a mass-loss rate of 10(- 5.8) M-aS (TM) yr(- 1), and found that the stellar wind composition is dominated by helium with 20 per cent of hydrogen. Spectroscopy of the shell revealed an He iii region centred on BAT99 3a and having the same angular radius (a parts per thousand 15 arcsec) as the shell. We thereby add a new example to a rare class of high-excitation nebulae photoionized by WR stars. Analysis of the nebular spectrum showed that the shell is composed of unprocessed material, implying that the shell was swept-up from the local interstellar medium. We discuss the physical relationship between the newly identified massive stars and their possible membership of a previously unrecognized star cluster. The length of wrapped DNA optimizes its binding energy to the histone core and the elastic energy penalty of DNA wrapping. The magnitude of the effect predicted from our model is in agreement with the systematic experimental data on the linear variation of nucleosome repeat lengths with H1/nucleosome ratio (Woodcock C L et al 2006 Chromos. Res. 14 17-25). We compare our model to the data for different cell types and organisms, with a widely varying ratio of bound H1 histones per nucleosome. We underline the importance of this non-specific histone-DNA charge-balance mechanism in regulating the positioning of nucleosomes and the degree of compaction of chromatin fibers in eukaryotic cells. I. x-ray sorces in the field JF - The astrophysical journal : an international review of spectroscopy and astronomical physics ; Supplement series N2 - A very sensitive X-ray investigation of the giant HII region N11 in the Large Megallanic Cloud was performed using the Chandra X-ray Observatory. The 300 ks observation reveals X-ray sources with luminosities down to 10(32) erg s(-1), increasing the number of known point sources in the field by more than a factor of five. Among these detections are 13 massive stars (3 compact groups of massive stars, 9 O stars, and one early B star) with log(L-X/L-BOL) similar to -6.5 to -7, which may suggest that they are highly magnetic or colliding-wind systems. On the other hand, the stacked signal for regions corresponding to undetected O stars yields log(L-X/L-BOL) similar to -7.3, i.e., an emission level comparable to similar Galactic stars despite the lower metallicity. Other point sources coincide with 11 foreground stars, 6 late-B/A stars in N11, and many background objects. This observation also uncovers the extent and detailed spatial properties of the soft, diffuse emission regions, but the presence of some hotter plasma in their spectra suggests contamination by the unresolved stellar population. The solar wind and IMF interactions with the magnetosphere drive the MIT system via the magnetospheric field-aligned currents (FACs). The global modeling helps us to understand the physical background of this complex system. With the present study, we test the recently developed high-resolution empirical model of field-aligned currents MFACE (a high-resolution Model of Field-Aligned Currents through Empirical orthogonal functions analysis). These FAC distributions were used as input of the time-dependent, fully self-consistent global Upper Atmosphere Model (UAM) for different seasons and various solar wind and IMF conditions. The modeling results for neutral mass density and thermospheric wind are directly compared with the CHAMP satellite measurements. In addition, we perform comparisons with the global empirical models: the thermospheric wind model (HWM07) and the atmosphere density model (Naval Research Laboratory Mass Spectrometer and Incoherent Scatter Extended 2000). The theoretical model shows a good agreement with the satellite observations and an improved behavior compared with the empirical models at high latitudes. Using the MFACE model as input parameter of the UAM model, we obtain a realistic distribution of the upper atmosphere parameters for the Northern and Southern Hemispheres during stable IMF orientation as well as during dynamic situations. This variant of the UAM can therefore be used for modeling the MIT system and space weather predictions. Two materials are studied differing in the molecular weight: an azobenzene-containing polymer and a molecular glass formed from a much smaller molecule consisting of three connected azobenzene units. Topography changes occurring along with the changes in irradiation conditions are recorded using a homemade set-up combining an optical part for generation and shaping of interference patterns and an atomic force microscope for acquiring the kinetics of film deformation. In this way, we could reveal the unique behavior of photosensitive materials during the first few minutes of irradiation: the change in topography is initially driven by an increase in the azobenzene free volume along with the transcis isomerization, followed by the mass transport finally resulting in the surface relief grating. Two approaches are proposed. Within the first approach, the micellization of the surfactants inside the microgel is taken into account while the second model focuses on the hydrophobic interactions of the surfactant tails with the hydrophobic parts of microgel subchains. It has been shown that microgels effectively absorb surfactant ions. At low surfactant concentration this absorption is realized due to an ion exchange between microgel counterions and surfactant ions. The ion exchange is significantly affected by the amount of the microgel counterions initially trapped within the microgel particles which depends on the size of the microgel, its ionization degree, cross-linking density as well as polymer concentration in the solution. Increase of the surfactant concentration causes contraction of the microgels, which can be realized as either a continuous shrinking or a jump-like collapse transition depending on the system parameters. In the collapsed state additional absorption of surfactants by microgels takes place due to an energy gain from micellization or hydrophobic interactions. This leads to microgel precipitation and successive microgel overcharging at an excess of the surfactant in the solution. The theoretical results are compared with the existing experimental data, in particular, on photosensitive surfactant/microgel complexes. Silicone oil and silane coupling agent are studied as possible solutions to enhance the compatibility between the inorganic fillers and polymer matrix. Morphology, thermomechanical and dielectric behavior of the prepared specimens are studied. Results show that specimens filled with silicone oil coated particles have promising dielectric and thermal properties. The mechanical properties reveal a stiffness enhancement by 67% with a high strain at break of 900%. Here we analyze this question within the widely used two-state Brownian ratchet model of kinesin motors based on the continuous-state diffusion along microtubules driven by a flashing binding potential, where the cargo particle is elastically attached to the motor. Depending on the cargo size, the loading force, the amplitude of the binding potential, the turnover frequency of the molecular motor enzyme, and the linker stiffness we demonstrate that the motor transport may turn out either normal or anomalous, as indeed measured experimentally. We show how a highly efficient normal active transport mediated by motors may emerge despite the passive anomalous diffusion of the cargo, and study the intricate effects of the elastic linker. Under different, well specified conditions the microtubule-based motor transport becomes anomalously slow and thus significantly less efficient. Depending on the preparation procedure used to dry the active layers, these solar cells comprise high fill factors (FFs) of up to 67%. A strongly reduced bimolecular recombination (BMR), as well as a field-independent free charge carrier generation are observed, features that are common to high performance fullerene-based solar cells. Resonant soft X-ray measurements (R-SoXS) and photoluminescence quenching experiments (PQE) reveal that the BMR is related to domain purity. Our results elucidate the similarities of this polymeric acceptor with the superior recombination properties of fullerene acceptors. From extensive Langevin Dynamics simulations we quantify how far the network deformations propagate depending on the elasticity parameters of the network and the adhesion strength of the particles. We examine the dynamics of the collective area shrinkage of the network and obtain some simple relations for the associated characteristic decay lengths. A detailed analysis elucidates how the elastic energy of the network is distributed between stretching and compression modes in response to the particle binding. We also examine the force-distance curves of the repulsion or attraction interactions for a pair of sticky particles in the polymer network film as a function of the particle-particle separation. The results of this computational study provide new insight into collective phenomena in soft polymer network films and may, in particular, be applied to applications for visual detection of pathogens such as viruses via a macroscopic response of thin films of cross-linked hydrogels. In this study, we have found a periodic deformation above the silver film outside the nanostructure, even if the latter consists of just one groove. We explain our observation based on an electromagnetic hologram formed by the constructive interference between a propagating surface plasmon wave and the incident light. During their evolution massive stars can reach the phase of critical rotation when a further increase in rotational speed is no longer possible. Direct centrifugal ejection from a critically or near-critically rotating surface forms a gaseous equatorial decretion disk. Anomalous viscosity provides the efficient mechanism for transporting the angular momentum outwards. The outer part of the disk can extend up to a very large distance from the parent star. Aims. We study the evolution of density, radial and azimuthal velocity, and angular momentum loss rate of equatorial decretion disks out to very distant regions. We investigate how the physical characteristics of the disk depend on the distribution of temperature and viscosity. Methods. We calculated stationary models using the Newton-Raphson method. For time-dependent hydrodynamic modeling we developed the numerical code based on an explicit finite difference scheme on an Eulerian grid including full Navier-Stokes shear viscosity. Results. The sonic point distance and the maximum angular momentum loss rate strongly depend on the temperature profile and are almost independent of viscosity. The rotational velocity at large radii rapidly drops accordingly to temperature and viscosity distribution. The total amount of disk mass and the disk angular momentum increase with decreasing temperature and viscosity. Conclusions. The time-dependent one-dimensional models basically confirm the results obtained in the stationary models as well as the assumptions of the analytical approximations. Including full Navier-Stokes viscosity we systematically avoid the rotational velocity sign change at large radii. The unphysical drop of the rotational velocity and angular momentum loss at large radii (present in some models) can be avoided in the models with decreasing temperature and viscosity. The density profile of the central region is universal and insensitive to either the seed perturbation shape or the details of the relaxation process. The profile has a central core; the multiplication of the central density by the core radius is almost independent of the halo mass, in accordance with observations. In the core area the density distribution behaves as an Einasto profile with low index (n similar to 0.5); it has an extensive region with rho proportional to r(-2) at larger distances. This is exactly the shape that observations suggest for the central region of galaxies. On the other hand, this shape does not fit the galaxy cluster profiles. A possible explanation of this fact is that the relaxation is violent in the case of galaxy clusters; however, it is not violent enough when galaxies or smaller dark matter structures are considered. In this work, we dissect these contributions in oxygen K-edge RIXS from liquid alcohols. We use the scattering into the electronic ground state as an accurate measure of nuclear dynamics in the intermediate core-excited state of the RIXS process. We determine the characteristic time in the core-excited state until nuclear dynamics give a measurable contribution to the RIXS spectral profiles to tau(dyn) = 1.2 +/- 0.8 fs. By detuning the excitation energy below the absorption resonance we reduce the effective scattering time below sdyn, and hence suppress these dynamical contributions to a minimum. From the corresponding RIXS spectra of liquid methanol, we retrieve the "dynamic-free" density of states and find that it is described solely by the electronic states of the free methanol molecule. From this and from the comparison of normal and deuterated methanol, we conclude that the split peak structure found in the lone-pair emission region at non-resonant excitation originates from dynamics in the O-H bond in the core-excited state. We find no evidence that this split peak feature is a signature of distinct ground state structural complexes in liquid methanol. However, we demonstrate how changes in the hydrogen bond coordination within the series of linear alcohols from methanol to hexanol affect the split peak structure in the liquid alcohols. However, because of a temporal lack of self-averaging, transient subdiffusion emerges on the mesoscale, and it can readily reach macroscale even for moderately strong disorder fluctuations of sigma similar to 4 - 5k(B)T. Because of its nonergodic origin, such subdiffusion exhibits a large scatter in single-trajectory averages. However, at odds with intuition, it occurs essentially faster than one expects from the normal diffusion in the absence of correlations. We apply these results to diffusion of regulatory proteins on DNA molecules and predict that such diffusion should be anomalous, but much faster than earlier expected on a typical length of genes for a realistic energy disorder of several room k(B)T, or merely 0.05-0.075 eV. The several tens of picoseconds, and its efficiency is only half of that in a polymer:fullerene photoinduced electron transfer from the polymer to the perylene acceptor takes up to blend. This reduces the short-circuit current. Time-delayed collection field experiments reveal that the subsequent charge separation is strongly field-dependent, limiting the fill factor and lowering the short-circuit current in polymer:PDI devices. Upon excitation of the acceptor in the low-bandgap polymer blend, the PDI exciton undergoes charge transfer on a time scale of several tens of picoseconds. However, a significant fraction of the charges generated at the interface are quickly lost because of fast geminate recombination. This reduces the short-circuit current even further, leading to a scenario in which only around 2596 of the initial photoexcitations generate free charges that can potentially contribute to the photocurrent. In summary, the key photophysical limitations of perylene diimide as an acceptor in low-bandgap polymer blends appear at the interface between the materials, with the kinetics of both charge generation and separation inhibited as compared to that of fullerenes. Such equilibria are constructed analytically through an extension of the methods developed in Titov & Demoulin and numerically through an evolutionary sequence including shear flows, flux emergence, and flux cancellation in the photospheric boundary. It is demonstrated that the analytical equilibria are stable if an external toroidal (shear) field component exceeding a threshold value is included. If this component decreases sufficiently, then both flux ropes turn unstable for conditions typical of solar active regions, with the lower rope typically becoming unstable first. Either both flux ropes erupt upward, or only the upper rope erupts while the lower rope reconnects with the ambient flux low in the corona and is destroyed. However, for shear field strengths staying somewhat above the threshold value, the configuration also admits evolutions which lead to partial eruptions with only the upper flux rope becoming unstable and the lower one remaining in place. This can be triggered by a transfer of flux and current from the lower to the upper rope, as suggested by the observations of a split filament in Paper I. It can also result from tether-cutting reconnection with the ambient flux at the X-type structure between the flux ropes, which similarly influences their stability properties in opposite ways. The observed electron-phonon scattering yields a crystal momentum transfer rate per average phonon in 6H-SiC of 1.8 fs(-1) while it is 0.2 fs(-1) in crystalline silicon. The angular momentum transfer rate per average phonon for 6H-SiC is 0.1 fs(-1), which is much higher than 0.0035 fs(-1) obtained for crystalline silicon in a previous study. The higher electron-phonon scattering rates in 6H-SiC are a result of the larger electron localization at the silicon atoms in 6H-SiC as compared to crystalline silicon. While delocalized valence electrons can screen effectively (part of) the electron-phonon interaction, this effect is suppressed for 6H-SiC in comparison to crystalline silicon. Smaller contributions to the difference in electron-phonon scattering rates between 6H-SiC and silicon arise from the lower atomic mass of carbon versus silicon and the difference in local symmetry. Moreover, the optical absorption can be easily tuned to cover the solar spectrum by the insertion of an additional molecule into the starting complex. The strength of the deposition method is demonstrated by the use of the C3N4 layer as the electron acceptor in a polymer solar cell that exhibits a remarkable open-circuit voltage exceeding 1 V. Upon irradiation with light interference patterns, photosensitive films deform according to the spatial intensity variation, leading to the formation of periodic topographies such as surface relief gratings (SRG). The mechanical driving forces inscribing a pattern into the films are supposedly fairly large, because the deformation takes place without photofluidization; the polymer is in a glassy state throughout. However, until now there has been no attempt to characterize these forces by any means. The challenge here is that the forces vary locally on a nanometer scale. Here, we propose to use Raman analysis of the stretching of the graphene layer adsorbed on top of polymer film under deformation in order to probe the strength of the material transport spatially resolved. With the well-known mechanical properties of graphene, we can obtain lower bounds on the forces acting within the film. Upon the basis of our experimental results, we can deduce that the internal pressure in the film due to grating formation can exceed 1 GPa. It is not yet clear whether magnetic fields play an essential role in shaping planetary nebulae (PNe), or whether stellar rotation alone and/or a close binary companion, stellar or substellar, can account for the variety of the observed nebular morphologies. Aims. In a quest for empirical evidence verifying or disproving the role of magnetic fields in shaping planetary nebulae, we follow up on previous attempts to measure the magnetic field in a representative sample of PN central stars. Methods. We obtained low-resolution polarimetric spectra with FORS2 installed on the Antu telescope of the VLT for a sample of 12 bright central stars of PNe with different morphologies, including two round nebulae, seven elliptical nebulae, and three bipolar nebulae. Two targets are Wolf-Rayet type central stars. Results. For the majority of the observed central stars, we do not find any significant evidence for the existence of surface magnetic fields. However, our measurements may indicate the presence of weak mean longitudinal magnetic fields of the order of 100 Gauss in the central star of the young elliptical planetary nebula IC 418 as well as in the Wolf-Rayet type central star of the bipolar nebula Hen 2-113 and the weak emission line central star of the elliptical nebula Hen 2-131. A clear detection of a 250 G mean longitudinal field is achieved for the A-type companion of the central star of NGC 1514. Some of the central stars show a moderate night-to-night spectrum variability, which may be the signature of a variable stellar wind and/or rotational modulation due to magnetic features. Conclusions. Since our analysis indicates only weak fields, if any, in a few targets of our sample, we conclude that strong magnetic fields of the order of kG are not widespread among PNe central stars. Nevertheless, simple estimates based on a theoretical model of magnetized wind bubbles suggest that even weak magnetic fields below the current detection limit of the order of 100 G may well be sufficient to contribute to the shaping of the surrounding nebulae throughout their evolution. Our current sample is too small to draw conclusions about a correlation between nebular morphology and the presence of stellar magnetic fields. The setup enables to record soft x-ray absorption spectra of liquids in transmission mode with a temperature resolution of 0.5K and better. Reliability and reproducibility of the spectra are demonstrated by investigating the characteristic temperature-induced changes in the oxygen K-edge x-ray absorption spectrum of liquid water. Studies of the response of the systems exhibiting anomalously slow dynamics are often based on the continuous time random walk description (CTRW) with divergent mean waiting times. The bulk of the literature on anomalous response contains linear response functions like one by Cole-Cole calculated from such a CTRW theory and applied to systems at thermal equilibrium. Here we show within a fairly simple and general model that for the systems with divergent mean waiting times the stationary response at thermal equilibrium is absent, in accordance with some recent studies. The absence of such stationary response (or dying to zero non-stationary response in aging experiments) would confirm CTRW with divergent mean waiting times as underlying physical relaxation mechanism, but reject it otherwise. We show that the absence of stationary response is closely related to the breaking of ergodicity of the corresponding dynamical variable. As an important new result, we derive a generalized Cole-Cole response within ergodic CTRW dynamics with finite waiting time. Moreover, we provide a physically reasonable explanation of the origin and wide presence of 1/f noise in condensed matter for ergodic dynamics close to normal, rather than strongly deviating. Even in the absence of cues, however, experimental cell tracks show some degree of persistence. In this paper, we analyzed individual cell tracks in the framework of a linear mixed effects model, where each track is modeled by a fractional Brownian motion, i.e., a Gaussian process exhibiting a long-term correlation structure superposed on a linear trend. The degree of persistence was quantified by the Hurst exponent of fractional Brownian motion. Our analysis of experimental cell tracks of the amoeba Dictyostelium discoideum showed a persistent movement for the majority of tracks. Employing a sliding window approach, we estimated the variations of the Hurst exponent over time, which allowed us to identify points in time, where the correlation structure was distorted ("outliers"). Coarse graining of track data via down-sampling allowed us to identify the dependence of persistence on the spatial scale. While one would expect the (mode of the) Hurst exponent to be constant on different temporal scales due to the self-similarity property of fractional Brownian motion, we observed a trend towards stronger persistence for the down-sampled cell tracks indicating stronger persistence on larger time scales. By careful control of the amount of Pt deposited bimetallic Au@Pt, nanoparticles with moderate performance both for SERS and catalytic activity were obtained. The Pt-catalyzed reduction of 4-nitrothiophenol by borohydride was chosen as the model reaction. The intermediate during the reaction was captured and clearly identified via SERS spectroscopy. We established in situ SERS spectroscopy as a promising and powerful technique to investigate in situ reactions taking place in heterogeneous catalysis. We show the enhancement of g-C3N4 photoactivity after Er3+ doping by monitoring the photodegradation of Rhodamine B dye under visible light. The contribution of the upconversion agent is demonstrated by measurements using only a red laser. The Er3+ doping alters both the electronic and the chemical properties of g-C3N4. The Er3+ doping reduces emission intensity and lifetime, indicating the formation of new, nonradiative deactivation pathways, probably involving charge-transfer processes. T1 - Discovery of the hard spectrum VHE gamma-ray source Hess J1641-463 JF - The astrophysical journal : an international review of spectroscopy and astronomical physics ; Part 2, Letters N2 - This Letter reports the discovery of a remarkably hard spectrum source, HESS J1641-463, by the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) in the very high energy (VHE) domain. HESS J1641-463 remained unnoticed by the usual analysis techniques due to confusion with the bright nearby source HESS J1640-465. It emerged at a significance level of 8.5 standard deviations after restricting the analysis to events with energies above 4 TeV. It shows a moderate flux level of phi(E > 1TeV) = (3.64 +/- 0.44(stat)+/- 0.73(sys)) x 10(-13) cm(-2) s(-1), corresponding to 1.8% of the Crab Nebula flux above the same energy, and a hard spectrum with a photon index of Gamma = 2.07 +/- 0.11(stat)+/- 0.20(sys). It is a point-like source, although an extension up to a Gaussian width of sigma = 3 arcmin cannot be discounted due to uncertainties in the H.E.S.S. point-spread function. The VHE gamma-ray flux of HESS J1641-463 is found to be constant over the observed period when checking time binnings from the year-by-year to the 28 minute exposure timescales. HESS J1641-463 is positionally coincident with the radio supernova remnant SNR G338.5+0.1. No X-ray candidate stands out as a clear association; however, Chandra and XMM-Newton data reveal some potential weak counterparts. Various VHE gamma-ray production scenarios are discussed. If the emission from HESS J1641-463 is produced by cosmic ray protons colliding with the ambient gas, then their spectrum must extend close to 1 PeV. This object may represent a source population contributing significantly to the galactic cosmic ray flux around the knee. Optical and photocatalytic investigations show, along with the known red shift of absorption into the visible region, that the insertion of barbituric acid results in the in situ formation of in-plane heterojuctions, which enhance the charge separation process under illumination. Moreover, platinum as the standard cocatalyst in photocatalysis could be successfully replaced with first row transition metal salts and complexes under retention of 50% of the catalytic activity. Their mode of deposition and interaction with the semiconductor was studied in detail. Utilization of the supramolecular approach opens new opportunities to manipulate the charge transfer process within carbon nitride with respect to the design of a more efficient carbon nitride photocatalyst with controlled morphology and optical properties. On the substrate-attached surface of Dictyostelium discoideum cells, dynamic patterns of front-like and tail-like states are generated that are well suited to monitor transitions between these states. To image large-scale pattern dynamics independently of boundary effects, we produced giant cells by electric-pulse-induced cell fusion. In these cells, actin waves are coupled to the front and back of phosphatidylinositol (3,4,5)-trisphosphate (PIP3)-rich bands that have a finite width. These composite waves propagate across the plasma membrane of the giant cells with undiminished velocity. After any disturbance, the bands of PIP3 return to their intrinsic width. Upon collision, the waves locally annihilate each other and change direction; at the cell border they are either extinguished or reflected. Accordingly, expanding areas of progressing PIP3 synthesis become unstable beyond a critical radius, their center switching from a front-like to a tail-like state. Our data suggest that PIP3 patterns in normal-sized cells are segments of the self-organizing patterns that evolve in giant cells. Thus, no first-order interference between them occurs. However, coherence can be induced in a cascaded setup of two crystals if, e.g., the idler modes of both crystals are aligned to be indistinguishable. Due to the effect of phase memory it is found that the first-order interference of the signal beams can be controlled by the phase delay between the pump beams. Even for pump photon delays much larger than the coherence length of the SPDC photons, the visibility is above 90%. The high visibilities reported here prove an almost perfect phase memory effect across the two interferometers for the pump and the signal photon modes. One of the central challenges in the realization of such a deterministic device based on a single quantum emitter concerns the collection of the photons, which are radiated into a 4 pi solid angle. Here, we present the fabrication and characterization of an optical antenna designed to convert the dipolar radiation of an arbitrarily oriented quantum emitter to a directional beam with more than 99% efficiency. Our approach is extremely versatile and can be used for more efficient detection of nanoscopic emitters ranging from semiconductor quantum dots to dye molecules, color centers, or rare-earth ions in various environments. Having addressed the issue of collection efficiency, we also discuss the photophysical limitations of the existing quantum emitters for the realization of a deterministic single-photon source. A detailed study performed by quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM-D) is carried out and three main processes are identified: (i) initial mass uptake, (ii) adsorption desorption during layer equilibration and (iii) desorption during rinsing. In contrast to the high stability and strong layer increment of high molecular weight (HMW) PEMs, layer degradation characterizes low molecular weight (LMW) multilayers. In particular, two different instability phenomena are observed: a constant decrease of sensed mass during equilibration after PDADMAC adsorption, and a strong mass toss by salt-free rinsing after PSS adsorption. Yet, an increase of salt concentration leads to much stronger layer growth. First, when the rinsing medium is changed from pure water to 0.1 M NaCl, the mass loss during rinsing is reduced, irrespective of molecular weight. Second, an increase in salt concentration in the LMW PE solutions causes a larger increment during the initial adsorption step, with no effect on the rinsing. Finally, the mechanical properties of the two systems are extracted from the measured frequency and dissipation shifts, as they offer a deeper insight into the multilayer structures depending on chain length and outermost layer. The paper enriches the field of PE assembly by presenting the use of very short PE chains to form multilayers and elucidates the role of preparation conditions to overcome the limitation of layer stability. In this article, using recently published approach of phase diagram construction [Y. Zakrevskyy, P. Cywinski, M. Cywinska, J. Paasche, N. Lomadze, O. Reich, H.-G. Lohmannsroben, and S. Santer, J. Chem. Phys. 140, 044907 (2014)], a strategy for substantial reduction of compaction agent concentration and simultaneous maintaining the light-induced decompaction efficiency is proposed. The role of ionic strength (NaCl concentration), as a very important environmental parameter, and surfactant structure (spacer length) on the changes of positions of phase transitions is investigated. Increase of ionic strength leads to increase of the surfactant concentration needed to compact DNA molecule. However, elongation of the spacer results to substantial reduction of this concentration. DNA compaction by surfactants with longer tails starts to take place in diluted solutions at charge ratios Z < 1 and is driven by azobenzene-aggregation compaction mechanism, which is responsible for efficient decompaction. Comparison of phase diagrams for different DNA-photosensitive surfactant systems allowed explanation and proposal of a strategy to overcome previously reported limitations of the light-induced decompaction for complexes with increasing surfactant hydrophobicity. T1 - Constraints on very high energy emission from GRB 130427A JF - The astrophysical journal : an international review of spectroscopy and astronomical physics ; Part 2, Letters N2 - Prompt emission from the very fluent and nearby (z = 0.34) gamma-ray burst GRB130427A was detected by several orbiting telescopes and by ground-based, wide-field-of-view optical transient monitors. Apart from the intensity and proximity of this GRB, it is exceptional due to the extremely long-lived high-energy (100 MeV to 100 GeV) gamma-ray emission, which was detected by the Large Area Telescope on the Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope for similar to 70 ks after the initial burst. The persistent, hard-spectrum, high-energy emission suggests that the highest-energy gamma rays may have been produced via synchrotron self-Compton processes though there is also evidence that the high-energy emission may instead be an extension of the synchrotron spectrum. VERITAS, a ground-based imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescope array, began follow-up observations of GRB130427A similar to 71 ks (similar to 20 hr) after the onset of the burst. The GRB was not detected with VERITAS; however, the high elevation of the observations, coupled with the low redshift of the GRB, make VERITAS a very sensitive probe of the emission from GRB130427A for E > 100 GeV. The non-detection and consequent upper limit derived place constraints on the synchrotron self-Compton model of high-energy gamma-ray emission from this burst. Here, we present a technique that allows the capture of an entire Raman image with only one single exposure. The Raman scattering arising from the sample was collected with a fiber-coupled high-performance astronomy spectrograph. The probe head consisting of an array of 20 x 20 multimode fibers was linked to the camera port of a microscope. A1 - Metzler, Ralf T1 - Space-fractional Fokker-Planck equation and optimization of random search processes in the presence of an external bias JF - Journal of statistical mechanics: theory and experiment N2 - Based on the space-fractional Fokker-Planck equation with a delta-sink term, we study the efficiency of random search processes based on Levy flights with power-law distributed jump lengths in the presence of an external drift, for instance, an underwater current, an airflow, or simply the preference of the searcher based on prior experience. While Levy flights turn out to be efficient search processes when the target is upstream relative to the starting point, in the downstream scenario, regular Brownian motion turns out to be advantageous. This is caused by the occurrence of leapovers of Levy flights, due to which Levy flights typically overshoot a point or small interval. Studying the solution of the fractional Fokker-Planck equation, we establish criteria when the combination of the external stream and the initial distance between the starting point and the target favours Levy flights over the regular Brownian search. Contrary to the common belief that Levy flights with a Levy index alpha = 1 (i.e. Cauchy flights) are optimal for sparse targets, we find that the optimal value for alpha may range in the entire interval (1, 2) and explicitly include Brownian motion as the most efficient search strategy overall. T1 - Long-term monitoring of PKS2155-304 with ATOM and HESS:investigation of optical/gamma-ray correlations in different spectral states JF - Astronomy and astrophysics : an international weekly journal N2 - In this paper we report on the analysis of all the available optical and very high-energy gamma-ray (> 200 GeV) data for the BL Lac object PKS 2155-304, collected simultaneously with the ATOM and H.E.S.S. telescopes from 2007 until 2009. This study also includes X-ray (RXTE, Swift) and high-energy gamma-ray (Fermi-LAT) data. During the period analysed, the source was transitioning from its flaring to quiescent optical states, and was characterized by only moderate flux changes at different wavelengths on the timescales of days and months. A flattening of the optical continuum with an increasing optical flux can be noted in the collected dataset, but only occasionally and only at higher flux levels. We did not find any universal relation between the very high-energy gamma-ray and optical flux changes on the timescales from days and weeks up to several years. On the other hand, we noted that at higher flux levels the source can follow two distinct tracks in the optical flux-colour diagrams, which seem to be related to distinct gamma-ray states of the blazar. The obtained results therefore indicate a complex scaling between the optical and gamma-ray emission of PKS 2155 304, with different correlation patterns holding at different epochs, and a gamma-ray flux depending on the combination of an optical flux and colour rather than a flux alone. We solve a unifying analytical model of the strain propagation for acoustic impedance-matched opaque films on a semi-infinite transparent substrate, showing that the lattice dynamics essentially depend on two parameters: One for the spatial profile and one for the amplitude of the strain. Given that device characteristics depend on many parameters, deriving structureproperty relationships has been very challenging. Here we report that a single parameter, hole mobility, determines the fill factor of several hundred nanometer thick bulk heterojunction photovoltaic devices based on a series of copolymers with varying amount of fluorine substitution. We attribute the steady increase of hole mobility with fluorine content to changes in polymer molecular ordering. Importantly, all other parameters, including the efficiency of free charge generation and the coefficient of nongeminate recombination, are nearly identical. Our work emphasizes the need to achieve high mobility in combination with strongly suppressed charge recombination for the thick devices required by mass production technologies. We show that 100 ps after photoexcitation the transient XAS spectrum is consistent with an 8% expansion of the Au-Au bond length and a large increase in disorder associated with melting of the NPs. Recovery of the ground state occurs with a time constant of similar to 1.8 ns, arising from thermalisation with the environment. Simulations reveal that the transient spectrum exhibits no signature of charge separation at 100 ps and allows us to estimate an upper limit for the quantum yield (QY) of this process to be <0.1. Dielectric barrier discharges (DBDs) inside the cavities are triggered when the applied voltage is sufficiently high. During the DBDs, the cavities become man-made macroscopic dipoles which build up an effective polarization in the ferroelectret. Therefore, a phenomenological hysteresis curve is observed. From the hysteresis loop, the remanent polarization and the coercive field can be determined. Furthermore, the polarization can be related to the respective piezoelectric coefficient of the ferroelectret. The proposed method is easy to implement and is useful for characterization, further development and optimization of ferro- or piezoelectrets. We study a labelled particle in a generic system of identical particles with hard-core interactions in a strongly disordered environment. The disorder is manifested through intermittent motion with scale-free sticking times at the single particle level. While for a non-interacting particle we find anomalous diffusion of the power-law form < x(2)(t)> similar or equal to t(alpha) of the mean squared displacement with 0 < alpha < 1, we demonstrate here that the combination of the disordered environment with the many-body interactions leads to an ultraslow, logarithmic dynamics < x(2)(t)> similar or equal to log(1/2)t with a universal 1/2 exponent. Even when a characteristic sticking time exists but the fluctuations of sticking times diverge we observe the mean squared displacement < x(2)(t)> similar or equal to t(gamma) with 0 < gamma < 1/2, that is slower than the famed Harris law < x(2)(t)> similar or equal to t(1/2) without disorder. We rationalize the results in terms of a subordination to a counting process, in which each transition is dominated by the forward waiting time of an ageing continuous time process. However, ZnO suffers from poor chemical stability. ZnO also has a moderate work function (WF), which results in substantial charge injection barriers into common (organic) semiconductors that constitute the active layer in a device. Controlling and tuning the ZnO WF is therefore necessary but challenging. Here, a variety of phosphonic acid based self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) deposited on ZnO surfaces are investigated. It is demonstrated that they allow the tuning the WF over a wide range of more than 1.5 eV, thus enabling the use of ZnO as both the hole-injecting and electron-injecting contact. The modified ZnO surfaces are characterized using a number of complementary techniques, demonstrating that the preparation protocol yields dense, well-defined molecular monolayers. Here, we delivered spatially confined stimuli of the chemoattractant cAMP to the membrane of differentiated Dictyostelium discoideum cells to investigate whether localized receptor stimuli can induce the spreading of excitable waves in the G-protein-dependent signal transduction system. By imaging the spatiotemporal dynamics of fluorescent markers for phosphatidylinositol (3,4,5)-trisphosphate (PIP3), PTEN and filamentous actin, we observed that the activity of the signaling pathway remained spatially confined to the stimulated membrane region. Neighboring parts of the membrane were not excited and no receptor-initiated spatial spreading of excitation waves was observed. To generate localized cAMP stimuli, either particles that carried covalently bound cAMP molecules on their surface were brought into contact with the cell or a patch of the cell membrane was aspirated into a glass micropipette to shield this patch against freely diffusing cAMP molecules in the surrounding medium. Additionally, the binding site of the cAMP receptor was probed with different surface-immobilized cAMP molecules, confirming results from earlier ligand-binding studies. In this study the influence of pH-buffers and their concentrations, the charge density (AAA content) in microgel particles as well as the spacer length of the surfactant on the complex formation between the microgel and surfactant is investigated. It is shown that the presence of pH buffer can lead to complete blocking of the interactions in such complexes and the resulting microgel contraction/swelling response. There is a clear competition between the buffer ions and the surfactant molecules interacting with microgel particles. When working in pure water solutions with fixed concentration (charge density) of microgel, the contraction/swelling of the particles is controlled only by relative concentration (charge ratio) of the surfactant and AAA groups of the microgel. Furthermore, the particle contraction is more efficient for shorter spacer length of the surfactant. The onset point of the contraction process is not affected by the surfactant hydrophobicity. This work provides new insight into the interaction between microgel particles and photo-sensitive surfactants, which offers high potential in new sensor systems. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. The equations can be represented as a driven (by the incident wave) dissipative (due to radiation losses) system of delay differential equations of neutral type. Nonlinearity of oscillators makes the scattering non-reciprocal: The same wave is transmitted differently in two directions. Periodic regimes of scattering are analyzed approximately, using amplitude equation approach. We show that this setup can act as a nonreciprocal modulator via Hopf bifurcations of the steady solutions. Numerical simulations of the full system reveal nontrivial regimes of quasiperiodic and chaotic scattering. T1 - The science case for an orbital mission to Uranus: Exploring the origins and evolution of ice giant planets JF - Planetary and space science N2 - Giant planets helped to shape the conditions we see in the Solar System today and they account for more than 99% of the mass of the Sun's planetary system. They can be subdivided into the Ice Giants (Uranus and Neptune) and the Gas Giants (Jupiter and Saturn), which differ from each other in a number of fundamental ways. Uranus, in particular is the most challenging to our understanding of planetary formation and evolution, with its large obliquity, low self-luminosity, highly asymmetrical internal field, and puzzling internal structure. Uranus also has a rich planetary system consisting of a system of inner natural satellites and complex ring system, five major natural icy satellites, a system of irregular moons with varied dynamical histories, and a highly asymmetrical magnetosphere. Voyager 2 is the only spacecraft to have explored Uranus, with a flyby in 1986, and no mission is currently planned to this enigmatic system. However, a mission to the uranian system would open a new window on the origin and evolution of the Solar System and would provide crucial information on a wide variety of physicochemical processes in our Solar System. These have clear implications for understanding exoplanetary systems. In this paper we describe the science case for an orbital mission to Uranus with an atmospheric entry probe to sample the composition and atmospheric physics in Uranus' atmosphere. The characteristics of such an orbiter and a strawman scientific payload are described and we discuss the technical challenges for such a mission. This paper is based on a white paper submitted to the European Space Agency's call for science themes for its large-class mission programme in 2013. In this research, the band gap of 6H-SiC and its temperature dependence were analyzed with silicon 2p X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), X-ray emission spectroscopy (XES) and resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) allowing for a separate analysis of the conduction-band minimum (CBM) and valence-band maximum (VBM) components of the band gap. The temperature-dependent asymmetric band gap shrinking of 6H-SiC was determined with a valence-band slope of +2.45 x 10(-4) eV/K and a conduction-band slope of -1.334 x 10(-4) eV/K. The apparent asymmetry, e.g., that two thirds of the band-gap shrinking with increasing temperature is due to the VBM evolution in 6H-SiC, is similar to the asymmetry obtained for pure silicon before. The overall band gap temperature-dependence determined with XAS and nonresonant XES is compared to temperature-dependent optical studies. The core-excitonic binding energy appearing in the Si 2p XAS is extracted as the main difference. In addition, the energy loss of the onset of the first band in RIXS yields to values similar to the optical band gap over the tested temperature range. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. While most of our knowledge of actin-driven eukaryotic motility was obtained from cells that move on planar open surfaces, recent work has demonstrated that confinement can lead to strongly altered motile behavior. Here, we report experimental evidence that motile amoeboid cells undergo a spontaneous symmetry breaking in confined interstitial spaces. Inside narrow channels, the cells switch to a highly persistent, unidirectional mode of motion, moving at a constant speed along the channel. They remain in contact with the two opposing channel side walls and alternate protrusions of their leading edge near each wall. Their actin cytoskeleton exhibits a characteristic arrangement that is dominated by dense, stationary actin foci at the side walls, in conjunction with less dense dynamic regions at the leading edge. Our experimental findings can be explained based on an excitable network model that accounts for the confinement-induced symmetry breaking and correctly recovers the spatio-temporal pattern of protrusions at the leading edge. Since motile cells typically live in the narrow interstitial spacings of tissue or soil, we expect that the geometry-driven polarity we report here plays an important role for movement of cells in their natural environment. Comparison of annealed (renewal) continuous time random walks (CTRWs) with logarithmic waiting time distribution psi(tau) similar or equal to 1/(tau log(1+gamma)tau) and Sinai diffusion in quenched random landscapes reveals striking similarities, despite the great differences in their physical nature. In particular, they exhibit a weakly non-ergodic disparity of the time-averaged and ensemble-averaged MSDs. Remarkably, for the CTRW we observe that the fluctuations of time averages become universal, with an exponential suppression of mobile trajectories. We discuss the fundamental connection between the Golosov localization effect and non-ergodicity in the sense of the disparity between ensemble-averaged MSD and time-averaged MSD. We develop a method for an analytic solution of self-consistent equations describing uniformly rotating complex order parameters, both for single-branch (one possible state of locked oscillators) and multi-branch (two possible values of locked phases) entrainment. We show that synchronous states coexist with the neutrally linearly stable asynchronous regime. A1 - Todt, Helge Tobias T1 - Expansion of hydrogen-poor knots in the born-again planetary nebulae A30 and A78 JF - The astrophysical journal : an international review of spectroscopy and astronomical physics N2 - We analyze the expansion of hydrogen-poor knots and filaments in the born-again planetary nebulae A30 and A78 based on Hubble Space Telescope ( HST) images obtained almost 20 yr apart. The proper motion of these features generally increases with distance to the central star, but the fractional expansion decreases, i.e., the expansion is not homologous. As a result, there is not a unique expansion age, which is estimated to be 610-950 yr for A30 and 600-1140 yr for A78. The knots and filaments have experienced complex dynamical processes: the current fast stellar wind is mass loaded by the material ablated from the inner knots; the ablated material is then swept up until it shocks the inner edges of the outer, hydrogen-rich nebula. The angular expansion of the outer filaments shows a clear dependence on position angle, indicating that the interaction of the stellar wind with the innermost knots channels the wind along preferred directions. The apparent angular expansion of the innermost knots seems to be dominated by the rocket effect of evaporating gas and by the propagation of the ionization front inside them. Radiation-hydrodynamical simulations show that a single ejection of material followed by a rapid onset of the stellar wind and ionizing flux can reproduce the variety of clumps and filaments at different distances from the central star found in A30 and A78. T1 - Investigating broadband variability of the TeV blazar 1ES 1959+650 JF - The astrophysical journal : an international review of spectroscopy and astronomical physics N2 - We summarize broadband observations of the TeV-emitting blazar 1ES 1959+650, including optical R-band observations by the robotic telescopes Super-LOTIS and iTelescope, UV observations by Swift Ultraviolet and Optical Telescope, X-ray observations by the Swift X-ray Telescope, high-energy gamma-ray observations with the Fermi Large Area Telescope, and very-high-energy (VHE) gamma-ray observations by VERITAS above 315 GeV, all taken between 2012 April 17 and 2012 June 1 (MJD 56034 and 56079). The contemporaneous variability of the broadband spectral energy distribution is explored in the context of a simple synchrotron self Compton (SSC) model. In the SSC emission scenario, we find that the parameters required to represent the high state are significantly different than those in the low state. Motivated by possible evidence of gas in the vicinity of the blazar, we also investigate a reflected emission model to describe the observed variability pattern. This model assumes that the non-thermal emission from the jet is reflected by a nearby cloud of gas, allowing the reflected emission to re-enter the blob and produce an elevated gamma-ray state with no simultaneous elevated synchrotron flux. The model applied here, although not required to explain the observed variability pattern, represents one possible scenario which can describe the observations. As applied to an elevated VHE state of 66% of the Crab Nebula flux, observed on a single night during the observation period, the reflected emission scenario does not support a purely leptonic non-thermal emission mechanism. The reflected emission model does, however, predict a reflected photon field with sufficient energy to enable elevated gamma-ray emission via pion production with protons of energies between 10 and 100 TeV. T1 - Search for dark matter annihilation signatures in HESS observations of dwarf spheroidal galaxies JF - Physical review : D, Particles, fields, gravitation, and cosmology N2 - Dwarf spheroidal galaxies of the Local Group are close satellites of the Milky Way characterized by a large mass-to-light ratio and are not expected to be the site of nonthermal high-energy gamma-ray emission or intense star formation. Therefore they are among the most promising candidates for indirect dark matter searches. During the last years the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) of imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes observed five of these dwarf galaxies for more than 140 hours in total, searching for TeV gamma-ray emission from annihilation of dark matter particles. The new results of the deep exposure of the Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal galaxy, the first observations of the Coma Berenices and Fornax dwarves and the reanalysis of two more dwarf spheroidal galaxies already published by the H.E.S.S. Collaboration, Carina and Sculptor, are presented. In the absence of a significant signal new constraints on the annihilation cross section applicable to weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) are derived by combining the observations of the five dwarf galaxies. The combined exclusion limit depends on the WIMP mass and the best constraint is reached at 1-2 TeV masses with a cross-section upper bound of similar to 3.9 x 10(-24) cm(3) s(-1) at a 95% confidence level. T1 - Diffuse Galactic gamma-ray emission with HESS JF - Physical review : D, Particles, fields, gravitation, and cosmology N2 - Diffuse gamma-ray emission is the most prominent observable signature of celestial cosmic-ray interactions at high energies. While already being investigated at GeVenergies over several decades, assessments of diffuse gamma-ray emission at TeVenergies remain sparse. After completion of the systematic survey of the inner Galaxy, the H.E.S.S. experiment is in a prime position to observe large-scale diffuse emission at TeVenergies. Data of the H.E.S.S. Galactic Plane Survey are investigated in regions off known gamma-ray sources. Corresponding gamma-ray flux measurements were made over an extensive grid of celestial locations. Longitudinal and latitudinal profiles of the observed gamma-ray fluxes show characteristic excess emission not attributable to known gamma-ray sources. For the first time large-scale gamma-ray emission along the Galactic plane using imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes has been observed. While the background subtraction technique limits the ability to recover modest variation on the scale of the H.E.S.S. field of view or larger, which is characteristic of the inverse Compton scatter-induced Galactic diffuse emission, contributions of neutral pion decay as well as emission from unresolved gamma-ray sources can be recovered in the observed signal to a large fraction. Calculations show that the minimum gamma-ray emission from pi(0) decay represents a significant contribution to the total signal. This detection is interpreted as a mix of diffuse Galactic gamma-ray emission and unresolved sources. Polarized Raman microscopy allowed determining the reorientation of the chromophores as a function of the grating phase and penetration depth of the inscribing laser in three dimensions. We found periodic patterns, which are not restricted to the surface alone, but appear also well below the surface in the bulk of the material. Near-field optical microscopy with nanoscale resolution revealed lateral two-dimensional optical contrast, which is not observable by atomic force and Raman microscopy. T1 - Critical adsorption of polyelectrolytes onto charged Janus nanospheres N2 - Based on extensive Monte Carlo simulations and analytical considerations we study the electrostatically driven adsorption of flexible polyelectrolyte chains onto charged Janus nanospheres. These net-neutral colloids are composed of two equally but oppositely charged hemispheres. The critical binding conditions for polyelectrolyte chains are analysed as function of the radius of the Janus particle and its surface charge density, as well as the salt concentration in the ambient solution. Specifically for the adsorption of finite-length polyelectrolyte chains onto Janus nanoparticles, we demonstrate that the critical adsorption conditions drastically differ when the size of the Janus particle or the screening length of the electrolyte are varied. We compare the scaling laws obtained for the adsorption–desorption threshold to the known results for uniformly charged spherical particles, observing significant disparities. We also contrast the changes to the polyelectrolyte chain conformations close to the surface of the Janus nanoparticles as compared to those for simple spherical particles. Finally, we discuss experimentally relevant physico-chemical systems for which our simulations results may become important. In particular, we observe similar trends with polyelectrolyte complexation with oppositely but heterogeneously charged proteins. T1 - Chain-growth polycondensation of perylene diimide-based copolymers BT - a new route to regio-regular perylene diimide-based acceptors for all-polymer solar cells and n-type transistors N2 - Herein, we report the chain-growth tin-free room temperature polymerization method to synthesize n-type perylene diimide-dithiophene-based conjugated polymers (PPDIT2s) suitable for solar cell and transistor applications. The palladium/electron-rich tri-tert-butylphosphine catalyst is effective to enable the chain-growth polymerization of anion-radical monomer Br-TPDIT-Br/Zn to PPDIT2 with a molecular weight up to Mw ≈ 50 kg mol−1 and moderate polydispersity. This is the second example of the polymerization of unusual anion-radical aromatic complexes formed in a reaction of active Zn and electron-deficient diimide-based aryl halides. As such, the discovered polymerization method is not a specific reactivity feature of the naphthalene-diimide derivatives but is rather a general polymerization tool. This is an important finding, given the significantly higher maximum external quantum efficiency that can be reached with PDI-based copolymers (32–45%) in all-polymer solar cells compared to NDI-based materials (15–30%). Our studies revealed that PPDIT2 synthesized by the new method and the previously published polymer prepared by step-growth Stille polycondensation show similar electron mobility and all-polymer solar cell performance. At the same time, the polymerization reported herein has several technological advantages as it proceeds relatively fast at room temperature and does not involve toxic tin-based compounds. Because several chain-growth polymerization reactions are well-suited for the preparation of well-defined multi-functional polymer architectures, the next target is to explore the utility of the discovered polymerization in the synthesis of end-functionalized polymers and block copolymers. Such materials would be helpful to improve the nanoscale morphology of polymer blends in all-polymer solar cells. In climate data analysis, this involves an accurate specification of measured quantities and a consequent analysis that consciously propagates the measurement errors at each step. The dissertation presents a thorough analytical method to quantify errors of measurement inherent in paleoclimate data. An additional focus are the uncertainties in assessing the coupling between different factors that influence the global mean temperature (GMT). Paleoclimate studies critically rely on `proxy variables' that record climatic signals in natural archives. However, such proxy records inherently involve uncertainties in determining the age of the signal. We present a generic Bayesian approach to analytically determine the proxy record along with its associated uncertainty, resulting in a time-ordered sequence of correlated probability distributions rather than a precise time series. We further develop a recurrence based method to detect dynamical events from the proxy probability distributions. The methods are validated with synthetic examples and demonstrated with real-world proxy records. The proxy estimation step reveals the interrelations between proxy variability and uncertainty. The recurrence analysis of the East Asian Summer Monsoon during the last 9000 years confirms the well-known `dry' events at 8200 and 4400 BP, plus an additional significantly dry event at 6900 BP. We also analyze the network of dependencies surrounding GMT. We find an intricate, directed network with multiple links between the different factors at multiple time delays. We further uncover a significant feedback from the GMT to the El Niño Southern Oscillation at quasi-biennial timescales. The analysis highlights the need of a more nuanced formulation of influences between different climatic factors, as well as the limitations in trying to estimate such dependencies. N2 - Wissenschaftliche Untersuchungen setzen nicht nur eine Formulierung des gegenwärtigen Kenntnisstandes mitsamt ihrer Unsicherheiten voraus, sondern ebenso eine Eingrenzung des Unbekannten. Bezogen auf die Analyse von Klimadaten beinhaltet dies eine präzise Spezifikation gemessener Größen sowie eine durchgängige Berücksichtigung ihrer Messunsicherheiten in allen Schritten der Analyse. Diese Dissertation präsentiert eine analytische Methode zur Quantifizierung der in Paläoklimadaten inhärenten Messunsicherheiten. Ein weiterer Schwerpunkt liegt auf der Untersuchung von Unsicherheiten in der Kopplungsstruktur zwischen Klimafaktoren die bekanntermaßen die globale Durchschnittstemperatur (GMT global mean temperature) beeinflussen. Die Paläoklimaforschung beruht in kritischem Maße auf der Analyse von Proxydaten welche die Klimaentwicklung dokumentieren. Allerdings sind Proxydaten mit inhärenten Datierungsunsicherheiten behaftet. Basierend auf einem generischen Bayes’schen Ansatz wird in dieser Dissertation eine analytische Methode vorgestellt um aus den zeitlich unsicheren Proxydaten zeitlich präzise Folgen korrelierter Wahrscheinlichkeitsverteilungen zu erhalten. Von diesen Verteilungen werden Proxyzeitreihen zusammen mit ihren Unsicherheiten berechnet. Weiterhin wird eine rekurrenzbasierte Methode zur Analyse von Proxydaten entwickelt welche anhand dieser Wahrscheinlichkeitsverteilungen plötzliche Änderungen in der Dynamik des Systems ermittelt. Beide Methoden werden mit Hilfe synthetischer Beispieldaten validiert und mit realen Proxydaten demonstriert. Diese statistische Analyse von Proxydaten deckt unteranderem die Beziehungen zwischen der Variabilität der Daten und zugehöriger Unsicherheiten der Proxyzeitreihen auf. Die Re- kurrenzanalyse des Ostasiatischen Sommermonsuns bestätigt die bekannten Trockenzeiten der letzten 9.000 Jahre um 8.200 bzw. 4.400 Jahre vor unserer Zeit und deckt eine zusätzliche Trockenzeit um etwa 6.900 Jahre vor unserer Zeit auf. Die Kopplungsstruktur zwischen Klimafaktoren die bekanntermaßen die GMT beeinflussen lässt sich als ein verworrenes, gerichtetes Netzwerk mit multiplen Links, welche zu verschiedenen Zeitskalen gehören, darstellen. Speziell ergibt sich eine signifikante Wechselwirkung zwischen der GMT und dem ENSO-Phänomen (El Niño-Southern Oscillation) auf einer quasi-zweijährigen Zeitskala. Do open clusters and stellar associations form isolated or do they prefer to form in groups and complexes? Open cluster groups and complexes could verify star forming regions to be larger than expected, which would explain the chemical homogeneity over large areas in the Galactic disk. They would also define an additional level in the hierarchy of star formation and could be used as tracers for the scales of fragmentation in giant molecular clouds? Furthermore, open cluster groups and complexes could affect Galactic dynamics and should be considered in investigations and simulations on the dynamical processes, such as radial migration, disc heating, differential rotation, kinematic resonances, and spiral structure. In the past decade there were a few studies on open cluster pairs (de La Fuente Marcos & de La Fuente Marcos 2009a,b,c) and on open cluster groups and complexes (Piskunov et al. 2006). The former only considered spatial proximity for the identification of the pairs, while the latter also required tangential velocities to be similar for the members. In this work I used the full set of 6D phase-space information to draw a more detailed picture on these structures. For this purpose I utilised the most homogeneous cluster catalogue available, namely the Catalogue of Open Cluster Data (COCD; Kharchenko et al. 2005a,b), which contains parameters for 650 open clusters and compact associations, as well as for their uniformly selected members. Additional radial velocity (RV) and metallicity ([M/H]) information on the members were obtained from the RAdial Velocity Experiment (RAVE; Steinmetz et al. 2006; Kordopatis et al. 2013) for 110 and 81 clusters, respectively. The RAVE sample was cleaned considering quality parameters and flags provided by RAVE (Matijevič et al. 2012; Kordopatis et al. 2013). To ensure that only real members were included for the mean values, also the cluster membership, as provided by Kharchenko et al. (2005a,b), was considered for the stars cross-matched in RAVE. 6D phase-space information could be derived for 432 out of the 650 COCD objects and I used an adaption of the Friends-of-Friends algorithm, as used in cosmology, to identify potential groupings. The vast majority of the 19 identified groupings were pairs, but I also found four groups of 4-5 members and one complex with 15 members. For the verification of the identified structures, I compared the results to a randomly selected subsample of the catalogue for the Milky Way global survey of Star Clusters (MWSC; Kharchenko et al. 2013), which became available recently, and was used as reference sample. Furthermore, I implemented Monte-Carlo simulations with randomised samples created from two distinguished input distributions for the spatial and velocity parameters. On the one hand, assuming a uniform distribution in the Galactic disc and, on the other hand, assuming the COCD data distributions to be representative for the whole open cluster population. The results suggested that the majority of identified pairs are rather by chance alignments, but the groups and the complex seemed to be genuine. A comparison of my results to the pairs, groups and complexes proposed in the literature yielded a partial overlap, which was most likely because of selection effects and different parameters considered. This is another verification for the existence of such structures. The characteristics of the found groupings favour that members of an open cluster grouping originate from a common giant molecular cloud and formed in a single, but possibly sequential, star formation event. Moreover, the fact that the young open cluster population showed smaller spatial separations between nearest neighbours than the old cluster population indicated that the lifetime of open cluster groupings is most likely comparable to that of the Galactic open cluster population itself. Still even among the old open clusters I could identify groupings, which suggested that the detected structure could be in some cases more long lived as one might think. In this thesis I could only present a pilot study on structures in the Galactic open cluster population, since the data sample used was highly incomplete. For further investigations a far more complete sample would be required. One step in this direction would be to use data from large current surveys, like SDSS, RAVE, Gaia-ESO and VVV, as well as including results from studies on individual clusters. Later the sample can be completed by data from upcoming missions, like Gaia and 4MOST. Future studies using this more complete open cluster sample will reveal the effect of open cluster groupings on star formation theory and their significance for the kinematics, dynamics and evolution of the Milky Way, and thereby of spiral galaxies. N2 - Es ist weithin anerkannt, dass Sterne typischerweise in offenen Sternenhaufen und Sternassoziationen entstehen, dennoch ist wenig über Strukturen in diesem System der offenen Sternhaufen bekannt. Entstehen offenen Sternhaufen und Sternassoziationen isoliert oder entstehen sie bevorzugt in Gruppen und Komplexen? Gruppen und Komplexe von offenen Sternhaufen könnten bestätigen, dass Sternentstehungsregionen größer sind als erwartet, was die Homogenität der chemischen Zusammensetzung über weite Areale in der galaktischen Scheibe erklären würde. Sie würden auch eine weitere Stufe in der Hierarchie der Sternentstehung definieren und könnten als Indikatoren für die Skalen der Fragmentierung in Riesenmolekülwolken dienen. Des Weiteren könnten Gruppen und Komplexe von offenen Sternhaufen die Dynamik unserer Galaxis beeinflussen und sollten in Untersuchungen und Simulationen von dynamischen Prozessen, wie radiale Migration, kinematische Aufheizung der Scheibe, differentielle Rotation, kinematische Resonanzen und der Spiralstruktur, miteinbezogen werden. In den vergangenen Jahrzehnten gab es einigen Studien zu Paaren von offenen Sternhaufen (de La Fuente Marcos & de La Fuente Marcos 2009a,b,c) sowie zu Gruppen und Komplexen von offenen Sternhaufen (Piskunov et al. 2006). Erstere betrachteten ausschließlich räumliche Nähe für die Identifizierung der Paare, während letztere auch ähnliche tangentiale Geschwindigkeiten für die Mitglieder verlangten. In dieser Arbeit nutzte ich den kompletten Satz an 6D-Phasenrauminformationen, um ein vollständigeres Bild dieser Strukturen zu erstellen. Des Weiteren, habe ich Monte-Carlo Simulationen mit zufälligen Datensätzen implementiert, die anhand von zwei unterschiedlichen Varianten für die Ausgangsverteilungen der räumlichen und Geschwindigkeitsparameter generiert wurden. Zum Einen unter der Annahme einer gleichmäßigen Verteilung in der galaktischen Scheibe und zum Anderen unter der Annahme, dass die Datenverteilungen im COCD repräsentativ sind für die gesamte Population der offenen Sternhaufen. Die Ergebnisse deuteten darauf hin, dass die Mehrheit der identifizierten Paare eher zufällige Anordnungen sind, aber die Gruppen und der Komplex schienen echt zu sein. Ein Vergleich meiner Ergebnisse mit den in der Literatur vorgeschlagenen Paaren, Gruppen und Komplexen ergab eine teilweise Überschneidung, die höchstwahrscheinlich durch Auswahleffekte und die Verwendung unterschiedlicher Parameter bedingt war. Dies ist eine weitere Bestätigung für die Existenz solcher Strukturen. Die Eigenschaften der gefundenen Gruppierungen bevorzugen, dass die Mitglieder einer Gruppierung von offenen Sternhaufen aus einer gemeinsamen Riesenmolekülwolke stammen und in einem Sternentstehungsereignis geformt wurden, das möglicherweise auch sequenziell ablief. Außerdem zeigte die junge Population der offenen Sternhaufen kleinere räumliche Abstände zwischen den nächsten Nachbarn als die alte Haufenpopulation, was darauf hindeutet, dass die Lebenszeit von Gruppierungen von offenen Sternhaufen vergleichbar ist mit der für die Population galaktischer offener Sternhaufen selbst. Dennoch wurden auch unter den alten offenen Sternhaufen Gruppierungen identifiziert, was andeutete, dass die gefundenen Strukturen doch in einigen Fällen langlebiger ist als man denken könnte. In dieser Doktorarbeit konnte ich nur eine Pilotstudie zu Strukturen in der Population der galaktischen offenen Sternhaufen präsentieren, da der verwendete Datensatz höchst unvollständig war. Für zukünftige Untersuchungen wäre ein deutlich vollständigerer Datensatz notwendig. Ein Schritt in diese Richtung wäre die Verwendung von Daten aus großen momentan verfügbaren Beobachtungskampagnen, wie dem SDSS, RAVE, Gaia-ESO und dem VVV, sowie das miteinbeziehen der Ergebnisse von Studien an einzelnen offenen Sternhaufen. Später könnte dieser Datensatz durch die Verwendung von Daten aus kommenden Missionen, wie Gaia und 4MOST, komplettiert werden. Zukünftige Studien mit einem vollständigeren Datensatz werden den Einfluss von Gruppierungen von offenen Sternhaufen für die Sternentstehungstheorie und ihre Bedeutung für die Kinematik, Dynamik und Entwicklung der Milchstraße, und damit auch für andere Spiralgalaxien, enträtseln. It starts with the appearance of the first stars and galaxies; a fraction of high-energy photons emitted from galaxies permeate into the intergalactic medium (IGM) and gradually ionize the hydrogen, until the IGM is completely ionized at z~6 (Fan et al., 2006). While the progress of reionization is driven by galaxy evolution, it changes the ionization and thermal state of the IGM substantially and affects subsequent structure and galaxy formation by various feedback mechanisms. Understanding this interaction between reionization and galaxy formation is further impeded by a lack of understanding of the high-redshift galactic properties such as the dust distribution and the escape fraction of ionizing photons. Lyman Alpha Emitters (LAEs) represent a sample of high-redshift galaxies that are sensitive to all these galactic properties and the effects of reionization. In this thesis we aim to understand the progress of reionization by performing cosmological simulations, which allows us to investigate the limits of constraining reionization by high-redshift galaxies as LAEs, and examine how galactic properties and the ionization state of the IGM affect the visibility and observed quantities of LAEs and Lyman Break galaxies (LBGs). In the first part of this thesis we focus on performing radiative transfer calculations to simulate reionization. We have developed a mapping-sphere-scheme, which, starting from spherically averaged temperature and density fields, uses our 1D radiative transfer code and computes the effect of each source on the IGM temperature and ionization (HII, HeII, HeIII) profiles, which are subsequently mapped onto a grid. Furthermore we have updated the 3D Monte-Carlo radiative transfer pCRASH, enabling detailed reionization simulations which take individual source characteristics into account. In the second part of this thesis we perform a reionization simulation by post-processing a smoothed-particle hydrodynamical (SPH) simulation (GADGET-2) with 3D radiative transfer (pCRASH), where the ionizing sources are modelled according to the characteristics of the stellar populations in the hydrodynamical simulation. Following the ionization fractions of hydrogen (HI) and helium (HeII, HeIII), and temperature in our simulation, we find that reionization starts at z~11 and ends at z~6, and high density regions near sources are ionized earlier than low density regions far from sources. In the third part of this thesis we couple the cosmological SPH simulation and the radiative transfer simulations with a physically motivated, self-consistent model for LAEs, in order to understand the importance of the ionization state of the IGM, the escape fraction of ionizing photons from galaxies and dust in the interstellar medium (ISM) on the visibility of LAEs. Comparison of our models results with the LAE Lyman Alpha (Lya) and UV luminosity functions at z~6.6 reveals a three-dimensional degeneracy between the ionization state of the IGM, the ionizing photons escape fraction and the ISM dust distribution, which implies that LAEs act not only as tracers of reionization but also of the ionizing photon escape fraction and of the ISM dust distribution. This degeneracy does not even break down when we compare simulated with observed clustering of LAEs at z~6.6. However, our results show that reionization has the largest impact on the amplitude of the LAE angular correlation functions, and its imprints are clearly distinguishable from those of properties on galactic scales. These results show that reionization cannot be constrained tightly by exclusively using LAE observations. Further observational constraints, e.g. tomographies of the redshifted hydrogen 21cm line, are required. In addition we also use our LAE model to probe the question when a galaxy is visible as a LAE or a LBG. Within our model galaxies above a critical stellar mass can produce enough luminosity to be visible as a LBG and/or a LAE. By finding an increasing duty cycle of LBGs with Lya emission as the UV magnitude or stellar mass of the galaxy rises, our model reveals that the brightest (and most massive) LBGs most often show Lya emission. Predicting the Lya equivalent width (Lya EW) distribution and the fraction of LBGs showing Lya emission at z~6.6, we reproduce the observational trend of the Lya EWs with UV magnitude. However, the Lya EWs of the UV brightest LBGs exceed observations and can only be reconciled by accounting for an increased Lya attenuation of massive galaxies, which implies that the observed Lya brightest LAEs do not necessarily coincide with the UV brightest galaxies. We have analysed the dependencies of LAE observables on the properties of the galactic and intergalactic medium and the LAE-LBG connection, and this enhances our understanding of the nature of LAEs. Die Epoche der Reionisation beginnt mit dem Erscheinen der ersten Sterne und Galaxien. Von den Galaxien ausgesendete energiereiche Photonen durchdringen das intergalaktische Medium (IGM) und ionisieren den vorhandenen Wasserstoff schrittweise, bis das IGM bei z~6 (Fan et al., 2006) vollständig ionisiert ist. Während der Verlauf der Reionisation zum einen durch die Galaxienentwicklung bestimmt wird, verändert die Reionisation zum anderen den Ionisations- und thermischen Zustand des IGMs und beeinflusst damit die darauffolgende Struktur- und Galaxienentwicklung durch verschiedene Rückkopplungsmechanismen. Die geringen Kenntnisse der Eigenschaften von Galaxien bei hohen Rotverschiebungen wie der Staubverteilung und des Anteils an ionisierenden Photonen, die die Galaxien verlassen können, erschweren jedoch das Verständnis des Wechselspiels zwischen Reionisation und Galaxienentwicklung. Lyman Alpha Emitter (LAE) stellen Galaxien bei hoher Rotverschiebung dar, deren Sichtbarkeit diesen Eigenschaften und den Effekten der Reionisa\-tion unterliegen. Diese Arbeit zielt darauf ab, den Verlauf der Reionisation anhand von kosmologischen Simulationen zu verstehen. Insbesondere interessiert, inwieweit der Verlauf der Reionisation durch Galaxien bei hohen Rotverschiebungen eingeschränkt werden kann, und wie die Eigenschaften der Galaxien und der Ionisationszustand des IGMs die Sichtbarkeit und die beobachtbaren Größen der LAE und Lyman Break Galaxien (LBG) beeinflussen können. Im ersten Teil dieser Arbeit werden verschiedene Ansätze zur Lösung des Strahlungstransportes neu- und weiterentwickelt mit dem Ziel, die Epoche der Reionisation zu simulieren. Dazu wurde zum einen eine Methode entwickelt, die als Berechnungsgrundlage sphärisch gemittelte Temperatur- und Dichtefelder benutzt. Mithilfe des in dieser Arbeit entwickelten eindimensionalen Strahlungstransportcodes werden die Auswirkungen jeder Quelle auf die dementsprechenden Temperatur- und Ionisa\-tionsprofile (HII, HeII, HeIII) berechnet und diese auf ein Gitter abgebildet. Zum anderen wurde der dreidimensionale Monte-Carlo-Strahlungstransportcode pCRASH so erweitert, sodass detaillierte Reionisationsimulationen, die individulle Quelleneigenschaften berücksichtigen, durchgeführt werden können. Im zweiten Teil dieser Arbeit wird die Epoche der Reionisation in sich konsistent simuliert, indem aufbauend auf einer gasdynamischen Simulation (smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH), GADGET-2) mithilfe von pCRASH Strahlungstransportrechnungen ausgeführt werden. Dabei werden die ionisierenden Quellen gemäß der Eigenschaften der Sternpopulationen in der gasdynamischen Simulation modelliert. Die Entwicklung der IGM-Ionisationsanteile an Wasserstoff (HII) und Helium (HeII, HeIII) sowie der Temperatur werden in der Simulation verfolgt. Es zeigt sich, dass Reionisation erstens bei z~11 beginnt und bei z~6 endet, und zweitens von überdichten zu unterdichten Gebieten des Kosmos hin verläuft. Im dritten Teil der Arbeit werden kosmologische SPH - und Strahlungstransportsimulationen mit einem physikalisch motivierten, selbst-konsistenten Modell für LAEs kombiniert, um den Einfluss des Ionisationszustandes des IGMs, des Anteils der ionisierenden Photonen, die die Galaxien verlassen können, und der Staubverteilung im interstellaren Medium (ISM) auf die sichtbaren Eigenschaften der LAEs zu verstehen. Der Vergleich der Simulationsergebnisse mit den beobachteten LAE Lyman Alpha- und UV-Leuchtkraftfunktionen bei z~6.6 offenbart eine dreidimensionale Entartung zwischen dem Ionisationszustand des IGMs, dem Anteil der ionisierenden Photonen, die die Galaxien verlassen können, und der Staubverteilung im ISM. Dies bedeutet, dass die Sichtbarkeit von LAEs nicht nur ein Indikator für den Ionisationszustand des IGM ist, sondern auch für den Anteil an ionisierenden Photonen, die die Galaxien verlassen können, und für die Staubverteilung im ISM. Diese Entartung lässt sich auch nicht auflösen, wenn Simulations- und Beobachtungsdaten der räumlichen Verteilung der LAEs bei z~6.6 gemessen mit der winkelabhängigen Zweipunktkorrelationsfunktion verglichen werden. Jedoch zeigt unser Modell, dass die Reionisation den größten Effekt auf die Amplitude der Winkelkorrelation hat und dass sich ihre Spuren klar von den Effekten auf galaktischen Skalen (den Anteil der ionisierenden Photonen, die die Galaxien verlassen können, und der Staubverteilung im ISM) unterscheiden lassen. Somit kann Reionisation nicht alleine durch LAE Beobachtungen eingeschränkt werden, und es werden weitere Beobachtungen, wie z.B. die Tomographie der rotverschobenen 21cm Wasserstofflinie, benötigt. Leads in the sea ice produce strong convective fluxes of sensible and latent heat and release aerosol particles into the atmosphere. They increase the occurrence of clouds and modify the structure and characteristics of the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) and thereby influence the Arctic climate. In the course of this study aircraft measurements were performed over the western Arctic Ocean as part of the campaign PAMARCMIP 2012 of the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research (AWI). Backscatter from aerosols and clouds within the lower troposphere and the ABL were measured with the nadir pointing Airborne Mobile Aerosol Lidar (AMALi) and dropsondes were launched to obtain profiles of meteorological variables. Furthermore, in situ measurements of aerosol properties, meteorological variables and turbulence were part of the campaign. The measurements covered a broad range of atmospheric and sea ice conditions. In this thesis, properties of the ABL over Arctic sea ice with a focus on the influence of open leads are studied based on the data from the PAMARCMIP campaign. The height of the ABL is determined by different methods that are applied to dropsonde and AMALi backscatter profiles. ABL heights are compared for different flights representing different conditions of the atmosphere and of sea ice and open water influence. The different criteria for ABL height that are applied show large variation in terms of agreement among each other, depending on the characteristics of the ABL and its history. It is shown that ABL height determination from lidar backscatter by methods commonly used under mid-latitude conditions is applicable to the Arctic ABL only under certain conditions. Aerosol or clouds within the ABL are needed as a tracer for ABL height detection from backscatter. Hence an aerosol source close to the surface is necessary, that is typically found under the present influence of open water and therefore convective conditions. However it is not always possible to distinguish residual layers from the actual ABL. Stable boundary layers are generally difficult to detect. To illustrate the complexity of the Arctic ABL and processes therein, four case studies are analyzed each of which represents a snapshot of the interplay between atmosphere and underlying sea ice or water surface. Influences of leads and open water on the aerosol and clouds within the ABL are identified and discussed. Leads are observed to cause the formation of fog and cloud layers within the ABL by humidity emission. Furthermore they decrease the stability and increase the height of the ABL and consequently facilitate entrainment of air and aerosol layers from the free troposphere. N2 - Die Verteilung von Meereis und offenem Wasser hat einen starken Einfluss auf die Atmosphäre über dem arktischen Ozean. Eisrinnen (sog. Leads) verursachen konvektive Flüsse von latenter und sensibler Wärme und führen zum Eintrag von Aerosolpartikeln in die Atmosphäre. Dadurch führen sie zum vermehrten Auftreten von Wolken und modifizieren die Struktur und die Eigenschaften der atmosphärischen Grenzschicht (ABL), wodurch das arktische Klima beeinflusst wird. Im Rahmen der Messkampagne PAMARCMIP 2012 des Alfred-Wegener-Instituts (AWI) wurden als Teil dieser Arbeit über dem westlichen arktischen Ozean Flugzeugmessungen durchgeführt. Mithilfe des nach unten gerichteten Airborne Mobile Aerosol Lidar (AMALi) wurde die Rückstreuung von Aerosolen und Wolken in der unteren Troposphäre und ABL gemessen. Dropsonden wurden verwendet, um Profile meteorologischer Größen zu erhalten. Zudem wurden in situ Messungen von Aerosoleigenschaften, meteorologischen Variablen und der Turbulenz durchgeführt. In dieser Arbeit werden die Eigenschaften der ABL über arktischem Meereis basierend auf den Daten der PAMARCMIP Kampagne untersucht. Dabei liegt der Fokus auf dem Einfluss offener Leads auf die ABL. Aus den gewonnenen Dropsondendaten und AMALi Rückstreuprofilen wird die Höhe der ABL mithilfe verschiedener Methoden bestimmt. Die für verschiedene Messflüge und somit unterschiedliche atmosphärische Bedingungen sowie Meereisverteilungen berechneten ABL Höhen werden miteinander verglichen, und somit der Einfluss von offenem Wasser auf die ABL untersucht. Die verschiedenen Methoden zur Bestimmung der ABL Höhe führen zu unterschiedlichen Ergebnissen, je nach Eigenschaften der ABL und ihrer Geschichte. Es wird gezeigt, dass die Methoden für die ABL Höhen-Bestimmung aus der Lidar Rückstreuung, die gewöhnlich für die mittleren Breiten verwendet werden, nur bedingt für arktische Bedingungen geeignet ist. Um die ABL Höhe aus der Rückstreuung ableiten zu können, müssen Aerosole oder Wolken in der Grenzschicht als Tracer vorhanden sein. Dazu ist eine Aerosolquelle nahe der Oberfläche notwendig, welche typischerweise unter dem Einfluss von offenem Wasser und konvektiven Bedingungen vorliegt. Dennoch ist es nicht immer möglich, die aktuelle Grenzschicht von residualen Schichten zu unterscheiden. Stabile Grenzschichten sind im Allgemeinen schwer zu detektieren. Um die Komplexität der arktischen Grenzschicht und die beteiligten Prozesse zu veranschaulichen, werden vier Fallstudien detailliert analysiert, welche jeweils eine Momentaufnahme des Zusammenspiels von Atmosphäre und Meereis oder Wasseroberfläche darstellen. Der Einfluss von Leads und offenem Wasser auf Aerosol und Wolken in der ABL werden identifiziert und diskutiert. Die Bildung von Wolken- und Nebelschichten, verursacht durch den Feuchteeintrag über offenen Leads, wird beobachtet. Zudem verringern leads die Stabilität der ABL, führen zu einer Zunahme ihrer Höhe und begünstigen dadurch Entrainment von Luft und Aerosolschichten aus der freien Troposphäre. This setup enables to study the selective excitation of phonon polaritons. These quasi-particles arise from the coupling of electro-magnetic waves and transverse optical lattice modes, the so-called phonons. The phonon polaritons were investigated in the optically non-linear, ferroelectric crystals LiNbO₃ and LiTaO₃. The direct observation of the frequency shift of the scattered narrow bandwidth probe pulses proofs the role of the Raman interaction during the probe and excitation process of phonon polaritons. I compare this experimental method with the measurement where ultra-short laser pulses are used. The frequency shift remains obscured by the relative broad bandwidth of these laser pulses. In an experiment with narrow bandwidth probe pulses, the Stokes and anti-Stokes intensities are spectrally separated. They are assigned to the corresponding counter-propagating wavepackets of phonon polaritons. Thus, the dynamics of these wavepackets was separately studied. Based on these findings, I develop the mathematical description of the so-called homodyne detection of light for the case of light scattering from counter propagating phonon polaritons. Further, I modified the broad bandwidth of the ultra-short pump pulses using bandpass filters to generate two pump pulses with non-overlapping spectra. This enables the frequency-selective excitation of polariton modes in the sample, which allows me to observe even very weak polariton modes in LiNbO₃ or LiTaO₃ that belong to the higher branches of the dispersion relation of phonon polaritons. The experimentally determined dispersion relation of the phonon polaritons could therefore be extended and compared to theoretical models. In addition, I determined the frequency-dependent damping of phonon polaritons. N2 - Während dieser Arbeit habe ich ein optisches Vier-Wellen-Misch-Experiment aufgebaut, um zeitaufgelöste Femtosekunden-Spektroskopie von Raman-aktiven Gittermoden durchzuführen. Dieser Aufbau erlaubt die Untersuchung selektiv angeregter Phonon Polaritonen. Diese Quasiteilchen entstehen durch die Kopplung von elektromagnetischen Wellen und transversal-optischer Gittermoden, den sogenannten Phononen. Die Phonon Polaritonen wurden in den optisch nichtlinearen, ferroelektrischen Kristallen LiNbO₃ und LiTaO₃ untersucht. Durch die direkte Beobachtung der Frequenzverschiebung der gestreuten, schmalbandigen Abfragepulse konnte die Raman-Wechselwirkung im Abfrage- und Erzeugungsprozess von Phonon Polaritonen nachgewießen werden. Diese experimentelle Methode vergleiche ich mit der Messung mittels ultrakurzen Laserpulsen. Hierbei ist die Frequenzverschiebung wegen der relativ großen Bandbreite der Laserpulse nicht auflösbar. Die Stokes und Anti-Stokes-Intensitäten sind hingegen in einem Experiment mit schmalbandigen Abfragepulsen spektral getrennt. Diese konnten den jeweiligen, entgegengesetzt propagierenden Wellenpaketen der Phonon Polaritonen zugeordnet werden. Deshalb war es moeglich, die Dynamik dieser Wellenpakete einzeln zu untersuchen. Basierend auf diesen Erkenntnissen konnte ich eine mathematische Beschreibung der sogenannten homodynen Detektion des Lichtes für den Fall von Lichtstreuung an entgegengesetzt propagierenden Phonon Polaritonen entwickeln. Desweiteren habe ich die breitbandigen, ultrakurzen Pumppulse mithilfe von zwei Bandpassfiltern so modifiziert, dass zwei spektral unterschiedliche und spektral nicht überlappende Anregepulse zur Verfügung standen. Dadurch wurde die frequenz-selektive Anregung von Polariton-Moden in der Probe ermöglicht. Diese Technik erlaubt mir die Untersuchung auch sehr schwacher Gittermoden in LiNbO₃ und LiTaO₃, die zu den höheren Ästen der Dispersionsrelation der Phonon Polaritonen gehören. Die experimentell bestimmte Dispersionsrelation der Phonon Polaritonen wurde erweitert und mit theoretischen Modellen verglichen. Zusätzlich habe ich die frequenzabhängige Dämpfung der Phonon Polaritonen bestimmt. It includes a method called transmission spectroscopy that searches for planetary spectral fingerprints in the light received from the host star during the event of a transit. This techniques allows for conclusions on the atmospheric composition at the terminator region, the boundary between the day and night side of the planet. Observationally a big challenge, first attempts in the community have been successful in the detection of several absorption features in the optical wavelength range. These are for example a Rayleighscattering slope and absorption by sodium and potassium. However, other objects show a featureless spectrum indicative for a cloud or haze layer of condensates masking the probable atmospheric layers. In this work, we performed transmission spectroscopy by spectrophotometry of three Hot Jupiter exoplanets. When we began the work on this thesis, optical transmission spectra have been available for two exoplanets. Our main goal was to advance the current sample of probed objects to learn by comparative exoplanetology whether certain absorption features are common. We selected the targets HAT-P-12b, HAT-P-19b and HAT-P-32b, for which the detection of atmospheric signatures is feasible with current ground-based instrumentation. In addition, we monitored the host stars of all three objects photometrically to correct for influences of stellar activity if necessary. The obtained measurements of the three objects all favor featureless spectra. A variety of atmospheric compositions can explain the lack of a wavelength dependent absorption. But the broad trend of featureless spectra in planets of a wide range of temperatures, found in this work and in similar studies recently published in the literature, favors an explanation based on the presence of condensates even at very low concentrations in the atmospheres of these close-in gas giants. This result points towards the general conclusion that the capability of transmission spectroscopy to determine the atmospheric composition is limited, at least for measurements at low spectral resolution. In addition, we refined the transit parameters and ephemerides of HAT-P-12b and HATP- 19b. Our monitoring campaigns allowed for the detection of the stellar rotation period of HAT-P-19 and a refined age estimate. For HAT-P-12 and HAT-P-32, we derived upper limits on their potential variability. The calculated upper limits of systematic effects of starspots on the derived transmission spectra were found to be negligible for all three targets. Finally, we discussed the observational challenges in the characterization of exoplanet atmospheres, the importance of correlated noise in the measurements and formulated suggestions on how to improve on the robustness of results in future work. N2 - Die Charakterisierung von Exoplaneten ist ein junger und sich schnell entwickelnder Zweig der Astronomie. Eine ihrer Methoden ist die Transmissionsspektroskopie, welche nach spektralen Abdrücken der Planetenatmosphäre im Licht des Muttersterns sucht. Diese Technik macht sich den Umstand zunutze, dass Planeten mit niedriger Bahnneigung einmal pro Umlauf vor ihrem Stern vorbeiziehen, wobei das Sternlicht Teile der Planetenatmosphäre durchläuft. Durch die Auswertung solcher Transitbeobachtungen lässt sich auf die chemische Zusammensetzung der Planetenatmosphäre schließen. Trotz der groβen Herausforderung an die benötigte Messgenauigkeit konnten bereits erste vielversprechende Ergebnisse erzielt werden und Entdeckungen wie zum Beispiel Rayleighstreuung und Absorption von Natrium und Kalium vermeldet werden. Andere Beobachtungen zeigten aber auch gänzlich flache Spektren ohne wellenlängenabhängige Absorption, welche auf eine Wolkenschicht oder Dunst in den Atmosphären hinweisen. In dieser Arbeit führten wir Transmissionsspektroskopie für drei extrasolare Planeten aus der Klasse der heißen Jupiter-artigen Gasriesen durch. Als wir mit unserer Studie begannen, waren erst zwei derartige Objekte erfolgreich auf ihr Spektrum im optischen Wellenlängenbereich untersucht worden. Unser Ziel war es, diese Anzahl zu erhöhen, um herauszufinden, welche spektralen Eigenschaften typisch für diese Exoplaneten sind. Wir wählten drei Objekte aus, für welche die zu erwartenden Messgenauigkeiten ausreichend für signifikante Ergebnisse sind: HAT-P-12b, HAT-P-19b und HAT-P-32b. Zusätzlich unternahmen wir Langzeitbeobachtungen der Muttersterne dieser Planeten, um die Transitbeobachtungen auf einen möglichen Einfluss von Sternaktivität zu korrigieren. Die erzielten Messungen der drei Planeten deuten alle auf Spektren ohne Absorptionslinien hin. Das Fehlen dieser Linien kann durch verschiedene Möglichkeiten zustande kommen, welche für die einzelnen Objekte individuell variieren können. Der Umstand jedoch, dass allen Objekten diese Linien fehlen und dass ähnliche Ergebnisse für weitere Objekte kürzlich in der Literatur publiziert wurden, deutet darauf hin, dass für einen bedeutenden Teil der Exoplaneten die Atmosphären nicht transparent, sondern durch kondensiertes Material optisch undurchlässig sind. Sollte sich dieses Ergebnis durch zukünftige Beobachtungen bestätigen, bedeutet es, dass die Transmissionsspektroskopie als Beobachtungstechnik nur sehr begrenzt für die Charakterisierung dieser Planetenatmosphären nützlich ist. Nur Beobachtungen hochaufgelöster Spektroskopie könnten dann verwertbare Informationen liefern. Weiterhin konnten wir in unserer Arbeit die Transitparameter und Ephemeriden von HAT-P-12b und HAT-P-19b genauer vermessen als es vorherigen Analysen möglich war. Durch unsere Langzeitbeobachtungen konnte die Rotationsperiode von HAT-P-19 bestimmt, sowie das Alter dieses Muttersterns neu berechnet werden. Ebenso leiteten wir Höchstwerte für eine mögliche Veränderlichkeit von HAT-P-12 und HAT-P-32 ab. Wir errechneten die Korrekturen der Transitparameter auf die Einflüsse von Sternaktivität und stellten fest, dass diese die Messergebnisse nicht wesentlich beeinflussen. Unsere Arbeit erlaubte tiefe Einblicke in die technischen Herausforderungen, welche diese Wissenschaft an die Sternbeobachtungen stellt. Wir diskutierten den Einfluss von systematischen Fehlern in den Messreihen und erarbeiteten Empfehlungen, wie die Messergebnisse weiter verbessert werden können. It can be considered as a general property of self-sustained oscillators to adjust their rhythm in the presence of an interaction. In this work we investigate complex regimes of synchronization phenomena by means of theoretical analysis, numerical modeling, as well as practical analysis of experimental data. As a subject of our investigation we consider chimera state, where due to spontaneous symmetry-breaking of an initially homogeneous oscillators lattice split the system into two parts with different dynamics. Chimera state as a new synchronization phenomenon was first found in non-locally coupled oscillators system, and has attracted a lot of attention in the last decade. However, the recent studies indicate that this state is also possible in globally coupled systems. In the first part of this work, we show under which conditions the chimera-like state appears in a system of globally coupled identical oscillators with intrinsic delayed feedback. The results of the research explain how initially monostable oscillators became effectivly bistable in the presence of the coupling and create a mean field that sustain the coexistence of synchronized and desynchronized states. Also we discuss other examples, where chimera-like state appears due to frequency dependence of the phase shift in the bistable system. In the second part, we make further investigation of this topic by modeling influence of an external periodic force to an oscillator with intrinsic delayed feedback. We made stability analysis of the synchronized state and constructed Arnold tongues. The results explain formation of the chimera-like state and hysteric behavior of the synchronization area. Also, we consider two sets of parameters of the oscillator with symmetric and asymmetric Arnold tongues, that correspond to mono- and bi-stable regimes of the oscillator. In the third part, we demonstrate the results of the work, which was done in collaboration with our colleagues from Psychology Department of University of Potsdam. The project aimed to study the effect of the cardiac rhythm on human perception of time using synchronization analysis. From our part, we made a statistical analysis of the data obtained from the conducted experiment on free time interval reproduction task. We examined how ones heartbeat influences the time perception and searched for possible phase synchronization between heartbeat cycles and time reproduction responses. The findings support the prediction that cardiac cycles can serve as input signals, and is used for reproduction of time intervals in the range of several seconds. N2 - Synchronisation ist ein fundamentales Naturphänomen. Es ist die grundlegende Eigenschaft sich selbsterhaltender Oszillatoren, in Gegenwart einer Wechselwirkung, danach zu streben, ihre Rhythmen anzupassen. In dieser Arbeit betrachten wir komplexe Synchronisationszustände sowohl mit Hilfe analytischer Methoden als auch durch numerische Simulation und in experimentellen Daten. Unser Untersuchungsobjekt sind die sogenannten Chimera Zustände, in welchen sich Ensemble von gekoppelten, identischen Oszillatoren auf Grund eines Symmetriebruches spontan in Gruppen mit unterschiedlicher Dynamik aufteilen. Die Entdeckung von Chimeras in zunächst nichtlokal gekoppelten Systemen hat in den letzten zehn Jahren ein großes Interesse an neuartigen Synchronisationsphänomenen geweckt. Neueste Forschungsergebnisse belegen, dass diese Zustände unter bestimmten Bedingungen auch in global gekoppelten Systemen existieren können. Solche Bedingungen werden im ersten Teil der Arbeit in Ensemblen global gekoppelter Oszillatoren mit zusätzlicher, zeitverzögerter Selbstkopplung untersucht. Wir zeigen, wie zunächst monostabile Oszillatoren in Gegenwart von dem Treiben der globalen Kopplung effektiv bistabil werden, und sich so in zwei Gruppen organisieren. Das mittlere Feld, welches durch diese Gruppen aufgebaut wird, ist quasiperiodisch wodurch der Chimera Zustand sich selbst stabilisiert. In einem anderen Beispiel zeigen wir, dass der Chimera Zustand auch durch einen frequenzabhängigen Phasenunterschied in der globalen Kopplung erreicht werden kann. Zur genaueren Untersuchung der Mechanismen, die zur effektiven Bistabilität führen, betrachten wir im zweiten Teil der Arbeit den Einfluss einer externen periodischen Kraft auf einzelne Oszillatoren mit zeitverzögerter Selbstkopplung. Wir führen die Stabilitätanalyse des synchronen Zustands durch, und stellen die Arnoldzunge dar. Im dritten Teil der Arbeit stellen wir die Ergebnisse einer Synchronisationsanalyse vor, welche in Kooperation mit Wissenschaftlern der Psychologischen Fakultät der Universität Potsdam durchgeführt wurde. In dem Projekt wurde die Auswirkung des Herzrhythmus auf die menschliche Zeitwahrnehmung erforscht. Unsere Aufgabe war es, die experimentellen Daten statistisch zu analysieren. Im Experiment sollten Probanden ein gegebenes Zeitintervall reproduzieren während gleichzeitig ihr Herzschlag aufgezeichnet wurde. Durch eine Phasenanalyse haben wir den Zusammenhang zwischen dem Herzschlag und der Start- bzw. Stoppzeit der zu reproduzierenden Zeitintervalle untersucht. Es stellt sich heraus, dass Herzschläge bei Zeitintervallen über einige Sekunden als Taktgeber dienen können. Cosmic rays are detected with energies spanning more than 10 orders of magnitude and reaching energies up to ~10²¹ eV, far higher than any man-made accelerator can reach. Different theories on the astrophysical objects and processes creating such highly energetic particles have been proposed. A very prominent explanation for a process producing highly energetic particles is shock acceleration. The observation of high-energy gamma rays from supernova remnants, some of them revealing a shell like structure, is clear evidence that particles are accelerated to ultrarelativistic energies in the shocks of these objects. The environments of supernova remnants are complex and challenge detailed modelling of the processes leading to high-energy gamma-ray emission. The study of shock acceleration at bow shocks, created by the supersonic movement of individual stars through the interstellar medium, offers a unique possibility to determine the physical properties of shocks in a less complex environment. The shocked medium is heated by the stellar and the shock excited radiation, leading to thermal infrared emission. 28 bow shocks have been discovered through their infrared emission. Nonthermal radiation in radio and X-ray wavelengths has been detected from two bow shocks, pointing to the existence of relativistic particles in these systems. Theoretical models of the emission processes predict high-energy and very high-energy emission at a flux level in reach of current instruments. This work presents the search for gamma-ray emission from bow shocks of runaway stars in the energy regime from 100MeV to ~100TeV. The search is performed with the large area telescope (LAT) on-board the Fermi satellite and the H.E.S.S. telescopes located in the Khomas Highland in Namibia. The Fermi-LAT was launched in 2008 and is continuously scanning the sky since then. It detects photons with energies from 20MeV to over 300 GeV and has an unprecedented sensitivity. The all-sky coverage allows us to study all 28 bow shocks of runaway stars listed in the E-BOSS catalogue of infrared bow shocks. No significant emission was detected from any of the objects, although predicted by several theoretical models describing the non-thermal emission of bow shocks of runaway stars. The H.E.S.S. experiment is the most sensitive system of imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes. It detects photons from several tens of GeV to ~100TeV. Seven of the bow shocks have been observed with H.E.S.S. and the data analysis is presented in this thesis. The analyses of the very-high energy data did not reveal significant emission from any of the sources either. This work presents the first systematic search for gamma-ray emission from bow shocks of runaway stars. For the first time Fermi-LAT data was specifically analysed to reveal emission from bow shocks of runaway stars. In the TeV regime no searches for emission from theses objects have been published so far, the study presented here is the first in this energy regime. The level of the gamma-ray emission from bow shocks of runaway stars is constrained by the calculated upper limits over six orders in magnitude in energy. The upper limits calculated for the bow shocks of runaway stars in the course of this work, constrain several models. For the best candidate, ζ Ophiuchi, the upper limits in the Fermi-LAT energy range are lower than the predictions by a factor ~5. This challenges the assumptions made in this model and gives valuable input for further modelling approaches. The analyses were performed with the software packages provided by the H.E.S.S. and Fermi collaborations. The development of a unified analysis framework for gamma-ray data, namely GammaLib/ctools, is rapidly progressing within the CTA consortium. Recent implementations and cross-checks with current software frameworks are presented in the Appendix. N2 - Das Rätsel des Ursprungs der kosmischen Strahlung wird seit über 100 Jahren angegangen und ist noch immer nicht gelöst. Kosmische Strahlung wird mit Energien die zehn Größenordnungen überspannen gemessen und erreicht Energien bis zu ~10²¹ eV, weit höher als irgendein menschengemachter Beschleuniger erzeugen kann. Verschiedene Theorien über die astrophysikalischen Objekte und Prozesse, die solch hochenergetische Teilchen erzeugen können, wurden vorgeschlagen. Eine prominente Erklärung für einen Prozess, der hochenergetische Teilchen erzeugt ist Schockbeschleunigung. Die Detektion von hochenergetischer Gammastrahlung von Supernovaüberresten, von denen einige schalenförmige Strukturen offenbarten, ist ein klarer Beweis für die Beschleunigung von Teilchen zu ultrarelativistischen Energien in den Schocks dieser Objekte. Die Umgebung von Supernovaüberresten ist komplex und das detaillierte Modellieren der Prozesse die zu hochenergetischer Gammastrahlung führen herausfordernd. Die Untersuchung von Schockbeschleunigung an Bugwellen, die durch individuelle Sterne erzeugt werden, die sich mit Überschallgeschwindigkeit durch das interstellare Medium bewegen, bietet die einmalige Gelegenheit die physikalischen Eigenschaften von Schocks in einer weniger komplexen Umgebung zu bestimmen. Das komprimierte ("geschockte") Medium wird durch die Strahlung des Sterns und die durch den Schock angeregte Strahlung erhitzt und sendet infolgedessen thermische Infrarot-Strahlung aus. Nichtthermische Strahlung, die auf die Existenz von relativistischen Teilchen hinweist, wurde von zwei Bugwellen in Radio- und Röntgen-Wellenlängen gemessen. Theoretische Modelle der Strahlungsprozesse sagen hochenergetische und sehr hochenergetische Strahlung auf einem Niveau, welches mit aktuellen Instrumenten gemessen werden kann, voraus. Diese Arbeit präsentiert die Suche nach hochenergetischer Gammastrahung von Bugwellen von Schnellläufersternen in einem Energiebereich von 100MeV bis ~100TeV. Diese Suche wird mit dem "large area telescope"(LAT) an Bord des Fermi Satelliten und den H.E.S.S. Teleskopen, die im Khomas Hochland in Namibia in Betrieb sind, durchgeführt. Der Fermi Satellit wurde 2008 gestartet und das Fermi-LAT durchmustert seitdem kontinuierlich den Himmel. Es detektiert Photonen im Energiebereich von 20MeV bis über 300GeV und hat eine noch nie dagewesene Sensitivität. Die Abdeckung des gesamten Himmels erlaubt es alle 28 Bugwellen von Schnellläufersternen, die im E-BOSS Katalog aufgelistet sind, zu untersuchen. Von keiner der Bugwellen der Schnellläufersterne konnte signifikante Strahlung nachgewiesen werden, obwohl diese von theoretischen Modellen, die die nichtthermische Emission von Bugwellen von Schnellläufersternen beschreiben, vorausgesagt wurde. Das H.E.S.S. Experiment ist das sensitivste System von abbildenden Cherenkovteleskopen. Es kann Photonen mit Energien von einigen zehn GeV bis zu ~100TeV nachweisen. Sieben der Bugwellen von Schnellläufersternen wurden mit H.E.S.S. beobachtet und die Analyse der Daten wird in dieser Arbeit präsentiert. Auch die Analysen der sehr hochenergetischen Strahlung enthüllten keine signifikante Strahlung aus den Bugwellen der Schnellläufersterne. Diese Arbeit stellt die erste systematische Suche nach Gammastrahlung aus Bugwellen von Schnellläufersternen vor. Zum ersten Mal wurden Fermi-LAT Daten speziell zur Suche nach Emission von diesen Objekten analysiert. Im TeV-Energiebereich wurden bisher noch keine Suchen nach Gammastrahlung von Schnellläufersternen publiziert, die hier vorgestellte Studie ist also die erste in diesem Energiebereich. Das Niveau des Gammastrahlungflusses von Schnellläufersternen wird über einen sechs Größenordnungen überspannenden Energiebereich eingeschränkt. Die oberen Grenzen des Gammastrahlungs usses aus Bugwellen von Schnellläufersternen schränken verschiedene Modelle ein. Für den besten Kandidaten, ζ Ophiuchi, liegen die berechneten oberen Grenzen im Fermi-LAT Energiebereich einen Faktor ~5 unter den Vorhersagen. Dies fordert die Annahmen des Modells heraus und liefert wertvolle Bedingungen für weitere Modellierungsansätze. Die präsentierten Analysen wurden mit den Softwarepakten, die von den Fermi und H.E.S.S. Kollaborationen zur Verfügung gestellt werden, durchgeführt. Die Entwicklung einer gemeinsamen Analyseumgebung namens GammaLib/ctools wird im Rahmen des CTA Konsortiums umgesetzt.
