N2  - Internationale Forschungsbefunde zu ‚Teaching in Higher Education’ konstatieren immer wieder eine Nicht-Übereinstimmung zwischen intentional angelegten Lehrinhalten und Lernzielen und tatsächlich hervorgebrachten Fähigkeiten. Sie legen eine formative Evaluation von akademischen Lehr-Lern-Angeboten nahe, um bereits im Verlauf einer Lehrveranstaltung auf etwaige Lernschwierigkeiten und –barrieren reagieren zu können. Das an deutschen Hochschulen gängige Repertoire sozial-wissenschaftlicher Evaluationsinstrumente fokussiert jedoch zumeist auf summative quantitative Verfahren, die weder den verschiedenen Formaten akademischer Lehre noch dem komplexen Interaktionsgeschehen in Lehr-Lern-Kontexten gerecht zu werden scheinen, indem sie auf die Abfrage studentischer Zufriedenheitsniveaus abstellen. Anliegen dieses Beitrages ist es daher, ein von der Verfasserin entwickeltes multifunktionales und metakognitiv angelegtes Lehr-Lern-Forschungsinstrument, die ‚doc.post’ vorzustellen, das sich insbesondere zur Ausbildung generischer Kompetenzen in verschiedenen universitären erziehungs- und kulturwissenschaftlichen Studiengängen bewährt hat. Die ‚doc.post’ eignet sich gleichermaßen als Evaluations- und Prüfungsinstrument sowie für weitergehende Forschungsaktivitäten, die Qualität der eigenen Lehre betreffend.
N2  - Research in Higher Education has shown that teaching and learning is actually not the same. Although we always have well-designed plans in teaching courses, students often do not acquire the needed and desired learning outcomes. Teaching does not automatically lead to a desired learning outcome. Searching for a solution of the described gap between teaching and learning I worked out a method called ‘doc.post,’ that serves both teaching and learning. It impacts teaching observation and evaluation and reveals students’ learning processes and insights at once. This paper is the first result of my ruminations on how to harmonize teaching and learning and consists of six parts. Before introducing the currently developed method ‘doc.post’, I have given a more general comment on academic teaching and the creation of ‘doc.post’ as a result of my own teaching and learning processes at universities. This is followed by few a words on the theoretical and analytical frame that ‘doc.post’ has been built on. I then explore how to use and when to apply the ‘doc.post’ in academic teaching and learning. Finally I summarize the extent of resources ‘doc.post’ requires and in which case it is worth using. If readers are interested in further details, there is additional information on practicing ‘doc.post’ aligned to empirical data at the very end of this paper.

N2  - The essay compares the dichotomous concepts of corporeality and spirituality in Judaism and Christianity. Through the ages, deviations from normative principles of beliefs could be discerned in both religions. These can be attributed either to the somewhat confrontational interaction between Jews and Christians in the Medieval urban environment or to the impact of Hellenic civilization on both monotheistic religions. Out of this dynamic impact emerged Christian art with a predilection to expressed corporeality, whereas Jewish religiosity found its artistic expression in a spiritual noniconographical mode. A genuine Jewish art and iconography could develop only after a certain degree of assimilation and secularization. Marc Chagall was the first protagonist of a mature expression of Jewish iconography.
N2  - Im Essay werden Körperlichkeit und Spiritualität als dichotomes Begriffspaar im Judentum (und Islam) gegenüber dem Christentum verglichen. Im Geschichtsverlauf wurden bei beiden Religionen Abweichungen von den sogenannten normativen Glaubenssätzen festgestellt. Diese können sowohl auf gegenseitige Beeinflussung (Anpassung durch Konfrontation im Mittelalter zwischen Judentum und Christentum) wie auch auf externe Akkulturationsprozesse (Hellenisierungsprozess im antiken Judentum) zurückgeführt werden. Es entsteht ein dynamisches Wechselspiel, wobei in der christlichen Kunst eine allmähliche Verkörperlichung stattfindet, während sich die jüdische Religiosität und der Kunstausdruck auf eine Vergeistigung festlegen. Eine eigenständige jüdische Kunstsprache und Ikonographie konnte allerdings erst nach einem gewissen Assimilationsgrad und Säkularisierungsprozess entstehen. Bei Marc Chagall hatte sie ihre erste Reife erreicht.

N2  - Yoel Hoffmann is an Israeli writer born in 1937 in Brasov (Kronstadt), Romania. Brought up in a German-speaking family, already in his first book, Sefer Yosef (1989), he conveys the voice of German-speaking immigrants in Israel (the “Katschen” story, 1986) and that of the East European Jewish community in Berlin in the late 1930s, on the verge of the Second World War. His works are crammed with characters of Jews from Germany gripped by the memory of the language they abandoned following their emigration to Palestine in the 1930s. The classic one is the character of Bernhard, in the eponymous work. The current article focuses on the representation and elaboration of Hoffmann’s unique creation, in a language influenced by his deep identification with Zen Buddhism on the one hand, and his attraction to the modernist, Western style of stream of consciousness on the other. In central sections of his works, Hoffman presents his entire literary corpus as a type of explicit, allusive, or secret Holocaust literature, and invites his readers and his critics to decode the allusions and expose the secret in this theme, a surprising statement in relation to Hoffmann’s work and its analysis so far. Hoffmann represents the Holocaust as a collective Israeli trauma for which his literary fiction creates a special catalogue of representative characters. In the creation of a catalogue, and particularly one that simultaneously classifies and individualizes, Hoffmann’s project resembles the monumental 1920s cataloguing project by the celebrated German photographer August Sander (Menschen des 20. Jahrhunderts). Hoffmann included photographs from this project in his works, and even chose some of them for the covers of his books. The article examines the implicit relationships between these two creative artists as conferring a meaning so far not considered in the research of the Holocaust theme in Yoel Hoffmann’s writings.

Der folgende Artikel fokussiert die Darstellungsweise und Ausarbeitung von Hoffmanns einzigartigem Werk, dessen Sprache einerseits durch seine tiefe Identifikation mit dem Zen Buddhismus und andererseits durch einen den Autor anziehenden, modernistischen westlichen Stil des Bewusstseinsstroms beeinflusst wurde. In zentralen Teilen seines Werkes stellt Hoffmann seinen gesamten literarischen Textkorpus als einen Typus der expliziten, anspielenden oder aber verborgenen Holocaust-Literatur dar. Er lädt seine Leserschaft und seine Kritiker dazu ein, seine Anspielungen zu dechiffrieren und das Geheimnis seiner Themen aufzudecken. Dies ist eine überraschende Aussage in Bezug auf Hoffmanns Werk und dessen bisherige Analyse. Der Autor stellt den Holocaust als ein kollektives israelisches Trauma dar, für das seine literarische Fiktion einen speziellen Katalog repräsentativer Charaktere erstellt hat. Bei der Erstellung dieses Katalogs, dies insbesondere da er zeitgleich klassifiziert und individualisiert, ähnelt Hoffmanns Projekt dem monumentalen Katalogisierungsprojekt der 1920er Jahre, das von dem gefeierten deutschen Fotografen August Sander (Menschen des 20. Jahrhunderts) durchgeführt wurde. Hoffmann bezieht Fotografien aus Sanders Projekt in sein Werk ein und verwendet sogar einige der Abbildungen für die Titelseite seiner Bücher. Der Artikel behandelt die implizite Beziehung zwischen diesen beiden kreativen Künstlern und lässt diesem Aspekt eine Bedeutung zuteil werden, die bislang in der Forschung über Holocaust Themen in Yoel Hoffmanns schriftstellerischem Werk keinen Niederschlag fand.

N2  - Die Erforschung der modernen Literatur nicht-aschkenasischer jüdischer Autoren – sefardischer und orientalischer Herkunft – steht erst in den Anfängen. Das Ghetto als Thema der west- und osteuropäischen Literatur wurde zwar lange vernachlässigt, doch ist es vor einigen Jahren zum Gegenstand der Literaturwissenschaft geworden. Zögerlich wächst nun auch das Interesse für die reiche doch oft tragische Geschichte und Kultur der nicht-aschkenasischen Juden, zumal die lange vergessenen jüdischen Flüchtlinge aus den arabischen Ländern ins allgemeine Bewusstsein vorrücken. Einen großen Anteil daran haben neu entstandene Filme, vor allem aber zeitgenössische literarische Werke, die sich diesem Thema widmen. Im Folgenden werden die Bücher über das keineswegs sorglose Leben in den Judenvierteln der Türkei (Istanbul), Marokkos (Marrakesch), Persiens und Iraks (Bagdads) vorgestellt. Berücksichtigung findet hierbei die Sicht der sich bis heute als unterprivilegiert fühlenden orientalischen Juden in den israelischen Einwandererstädten, die als Ghettos empfunden werden. Weder in den Ghettos ihrer Herkunftsländer noch in der neuen Heimat fühlten sich diese Menschen wirklich geborgen, so dass dort wenig vom Zauber des Orients zu finden ist.
N2  - The research on modern Jewish literature written by not ashkenasi authors is still in its beginnings. Whereas the topic of the ghetto in European countries has been researched on by literary historians, the rich, long and often tragic history of the Jews in Islamic countries, including the destiny of Jewish refugees from Arabia – both the sephardi and the mizrakhi – has long been ignored and forgotten, being overshadowed by the more successful Palestinian propaganda about the “nakbah”. Recently, due to a growing number of films but above all to books about Jewish history and culture in these countries written by contemporary Jewish authors, which are discussed here, we now know more about the only periodically tranquil life in the Jewish quarters of Turkey (Istanbul), Morocco (Marrakesh), Persia and Iraq where splendor of the Orient was not easily to be found. But even in Israel, the not ashkenasi immigrants did not experience equal treatment and find a haven as the descriptions of their situation in the neglected immigrant centers of the country show.

Im Artikel werden die Pläne für ein Museum im Ghetto Litzmannstadt diskutiert, das neben einer wirtschaftlichen und statistischen Ausstellung über die Produktionsleistungen der Ghettobetriebe auch einen kulturell-religiösen Bereich über das osteuropäische Judentum umfassen sollte. Die Idee für das Museum entstand in der deutschen Ghettoverwaltung, diese richtete für die Ausgestaltung der Räume über das Judentum eine Wissenschaftliche Abteilung innerhalb des Ghettos ein. Die Position der Wissenschaftlichen Abteilung, deren Arbeit in Sammlungs- und künstlerischen Aktivitäten bestand, war im Ghetto allerdings umstritten, da die propagandistische Vereinnahmung der ausgeführten Arbeiten durch die deutsche Ghettoverwaltung befürchtet wurde. Aber auch außerhalb des Ghettos stieß die Idee auf Ablehnung durch das Propagandaministerium. Im Artikel werden die sich überschneidenden aber teilweise auch widersprüchlichen Interessen und Motivationen der verschiedenen Protagonisten/innen dargestellt.

They marked environments which were also created by their inhabitants, however limited their conditions and freedom of action were. This paper discusses plans for a museum in the Ghetto of Litzmanstadt. Beyond economic and statistic exhibitions on productive outputs of the Ghetto industry, a cultural-religious area on eastern Judaism was projected. The German administration of the Ghetto developed the idea for this museum and implemented a research department for the composition of the Judaism area. However, this department, responsible for the collection of exhibits and artistic activities, was subject to controversy. Some inhabitants suspected the propagandistic exploitation of the results by the Ghetto administration. Moreover, outside the Ghetto, the Ministry of Propaganda rejected the ideas. The paper examines interests and motivations of different protagonists, sometimes overlapping, sometimes divergent.

Vor allem der wirtschaftliche Antagonismus zwischen Juden und kleinasiatischen Flüchtlingen nährte den Antisemitismus kleiner extremnationalistischer Gruppen wie der „Nationalen Union Griechenlands“ (EEE), die ihre Feindschaft gegen den „jüdischen Bolschewismus“ offen demonstrierten und deren Aktivitäten vom Staat toleriert wurden. Obwohl sich die Lage seit Mitte der dreißiger Jahre entspannte, waren die alten Ressentiments nicht aus der Welt geschaffen. Nach dem Einmarsch der Wehrmacht in Griechenland im April 1941 war die jüdische Gemeinde den repressiven Maßnahmen der deutschen Besatzungsmacht unterworfen. Die systematische nationalsozialistische Propaganda, gestützt auf die zensierte griechische Presse und örtliche ideologische Kollaborateure, zielte auf die Reaktivierung der alten Gegensätze, um die griechischen Juden zu isolieren. Die Beziehungen zwischen der jüdischen und der christlichen Bevölkerung wurden somit erneut auf die Probe gestellt. Die Errichtung von Ghettobezirken um das Zentrum der Stadt im Frühjahr 1943 bedeutete die Trennung der Juden von der übrigen Bevölkerung. Die Ghettoisierung schuf zwischen ihnen und den Christen eine „Mauer“, die kulturelle und wirtschaftliche Auswirkungen auf das Leben aller Bewohner hatte und letztlich ihre jahrhundertealte Symbiose beendete. In der Alltagspraxis offenbarte sich zugleich, dass diese „Mauer“ nicht ganz unüberwindlich war und neue Formen des Zusammenlebens prägte.
N2  - The relations between Jews and Christians in Salonica were not always excellent; in the interwar period the religious, cultural and economic conflicts made the symbiosis difficult. Because of the economic antagonism between Jews and Greek refugees from Asia Minor the influence of small nationalist groups as the „National Union of Greece“ (EEE) grew. The Greek state tolerated the actions of such groups; probably it considered them as national-minded. At the end of the thirties the situation became better, but the old resentiments did not disappear. After the military occupation of Greece, April 1941, the Jewish community suffered under the repressive measures of the German administration. The nationalsocialist propaganda, with the help of the Greek censored press and local ideological collaborators, wanted to reactive the old differences and to isolate the Jews. This policy affected the relations between Jews and Christians as well. The creation of a Getto in the centre of the city 1943 caused the separation of the Jewish population. The Getto established a „wall“ between Jews and Christians, which had cultural and economic consequences for the life of all the inhabitants and destroyed the uneasy symbiosis of the past years. But also in everyday life the „wall“ formed new ways of living together.

N2  - The threshold between the XVth and the XVIth Century represents a historical period during which, both for Christians and for Jews, the geopolitical sceneries and the interior horizons radically change. The modified reality provokes new forms of expectation and the need of new historical interpretations. Ferrara, within this scenery, can be considered, as other Italian cases, as a paradigmatic example, a narrow space where phenomena of spiritual and cultural Jewish rebirth can take shape. The permeability between Christian artistic and cultural world and Jewish intellectual production determines a prosperous context, further strengthened by the introduction of Jewish typography and by a growing claim and restoration of social elective dignity among the Jews of the Este Duchy. After the transfer of the capital city from Ferrara to Modena, the indirect effects of this intellectual resurgence are deeply transformed on a social level, and allows us to catch the persistence of important forms of communication between Christians and Jews in everyday life. The introduction of the Inquisition provides us, through the production of the judicial archive, with the most important instrument to understand social dynamics, which allows us to comprehend a new potential interpretation key for the reality of the ghetto and the choice of its erection. The urban division is nothing else but a new attempt to separate the invisible spaces of the thought. The effective efficacy of the physical separation shows several weak points, which persist during the entire life of the ghetto, since 1638 until 1789.
N2  - Die Schwelle zwischen dem 15. und 16. Jahrhundert stellt eine historische Periode dar, in der sich die geopolitische Landschaft und das innere Blickfeld sowohl für Christen als auch für Juden radikal änderten. Die veränderten Gegebenheiten lösten andere Erwartungen und das Bedürfnis nach neuen historischen Interpretationen aus. In diesem Kontext kann Ferrara, wie auch andere italienische Städte, als ein paradigmatisches Beispiel angesehen werden, als ein begrenzter Raum, in dem das spirituelle und kulturelle Wiederaufleben innerhalb der jüdischen Gesellschaft Gestalt annehmen konnte. Die Durchlässigkeit zwischen der künstlerischen und kulturellen christlichen Welt und jüdisch-intellektuellen Erzeugnissen bedingte ein gedeihendes Umfeld, das zudem durch die Einführung einer jüdischen Typographie und durch wachsende Ansprüche der Juden im Herzogtum der Este bestärkt wurde. Die indirekten Einflüsse auf dieses intellektuelle Wiederaufleben wirkten sich nach der Verlegung der Hauptstadt von Ferrara nach Modena tiefgreifend auf einer sozialen Ebene aus. Sie erlauben uns, das Fortdauern wichtiger Kommunikationsmuster zwischen Christen und Juden im Alltag zu erfassen. Das Einsetzen der Inquisition bietet uns mittels juristischer Archive die wichtigsten Instrumente, um soziale Dynamiken zu verstehen. Diese erlauben uns, neue denkbare Interpretationen als Schlüssel für die Gegebenheiten im Ghetto und für die Gründe seiner Errichtung in Betracht zu ziehen. Die städtische Trennungslinie ist nichts anderes als ein weiterer Versuch, die unsichtbaren Räume der Gedankenwelten voneinander abzugrenzen. Die nachhaltige Wirksamkeit der räumlichen Trennung weist einige Schwachpunkte auf, die während der gesamten Existenzphase des Ghettos von 1638 bis 1789 bestehen blieben.

N2  - Dieser Text geht der Frage nach, wie die wissenschaftliche Auseinandersetzung mit den nationalsozialistischen Ghettos in der Zeit von 1945 bis 1960 im englischen Sprachraum betrieben wurde. Werke, die jüdisches Erleben und Handeln mitsamt der gesellschaftlichen Organisation in den Mittelpunkt rücken, sind in diesem Zeitraum deutlich stärker vertreten, als dies nach einer Lektüre der Sekundärliteratur zu erwarten wäre. Ein wissenschaftlicher Ansatz, der die Juden nicht nur als namenlose Masse von Opfern wahrnimmt, tritt also durchaus schon früh auf. Ebenso wird die Politik der jüdischen Führungsschichten, der so genannten ‚Judenräte‘, deutlich differenzierter verhandelt als vermutet; neben vernichtenden Urteilen finden sich Kontextualisierungen, die ihr Agieren aus verschiedenen Blickwinkeln beleuchten und einordnen. Auch wenn diese Forschungsanliegen zunächst nur bedingt rezipiert wurden und vor allem universitär marginal blieben, lassen sich doch von dieser Seite Traditionslinien besonders in die entstehende israelische Holocaustforschung beobachten.
N2  - This paper investigates early academic interpretations of the National Socialist ghettos during the immediate post-war era and the 1950s. There are far more works with a focus on Jewish life and agency, and on the social fabric’s structure, than were to be expected after reading the secondary literature on that period. An academic approach that takes the Jews as acting subjects and does not present them as a nameless mass of victims has thus been present quite early. Also, there were quite differentiated statements on the Jewish leadership’s policy. We find devastating indictments, but then we also read texts that put the actions of the so-called ‘Judenräte’ into context, from various angles and with differing perspectives. Even if these research activities were met with little acceptance at first, being especially marginalized on a university level, we can observe their tradition in the emerging discipline of Holocaust Studies, particularly in Israel.

Es wird argumentiert, dass die Raumtheorie hier zu kurz greift und durch interpretative Ansätze ergänzt werden muss, um den sozialen Phänomenen im Ghetto gerecht zu werden. Die beiden Ansätze werden in ihrer Bedeutung für die Erforschung der Ghettogesellschaften dargestellt und an zwei Beispielen, „Kriminalität“ und Bildung, in ihrer Anwendbarkeit vorgeführt.
N2  - This paper combines the interpretative paradigm with the Spatial Theory to analyze the changes of social interactions of the ghetto inhabitants that were implemented by the National-Socialist ghettoization. We show that in order to explain how the inner rules of the ghetto societies changed, it is not enough to solely study the spatial side of ghettoization, but to additionally use the interpretative paradigm to grasp the social phenomena of the ghetto. Using two examples, crime and education, we show how the interpretative paradigm can be applied, and how it leads to a deeper understanding and raises different questions about social life in the ghettos.

Jahrhundert zum Inbegriff der frühneuzeitlichen Tradition. Im Folgenden werden einige Aspekte der Entstehungsgeschichte dieses Bedeutungswandels analysiert, der auf einer Zivilisierungsdynamik gegenüber den Juden im ausgehenden 18. Jahrhundert wie der Historisierung der Hebräischen Bibel in der Aufklärung basierte.

The article discusses „Ghetto” as the result of the process of historicizing life-worlds in the 19th century. „Ghetto” was now mainly used to describe the rabbinic tradition in early modern times. The article analyses some aspects of the history of origins of this change of meaning, which basically arised from the civilisation dynamism towards the Jews since the outgoing 18th century and the process of historicizing the Hebrew Bible in the age of enlightenment.

N2  - This co-authored paper is based on research that originated in 2003 when our team started a series of extensive field studies into the character of gameplay experiences. Originally within the Children as the Actors of Game Cultures research project, our aim was to better understand why particularly young people enjoy playing games, while also asking their parents how they perceive gaming as playing partners or as close observers. Gradually our in-depth interviews started to reveal a complex picture of more general relevance, where personal experiences, social contexts and cultural practices all came together to frame gameplay within something we called game cultures. Culture was the keyword, since we were not interested in studying games and play experiences in isolation, but rather as part of the rich meaning- making practices of lived reality.

N2  - This paper addresses a theoretical reconfiguration of experience, a repositioning of the techno-social within the domains of mobility, games, and play, and embodiment. The ideas aim to counter the notion that our experience with videogames (and digital media more generally), is largely “virtual” and disembodied – or at most exclusively audiovisual. Notions of the virtual and disembodied support an often-tacit belief that technologically mediated experiences count for nothing if not perceived and valued as human. It is here where play in particular can be put to work, be made to highlight and clarify, for it is in play that we find this value of humanity most wholly embodied. Further, it is in considering the design of the metagame that questions regarding the play experience can be most powerfully engaged. While most of any given game’s metagame emerges from play communities and their larger social worlds (putting it out of reach of game design proper), mobile platforms have the potential to enable a stitching together of these experiences: experiences held across time, space, communities, and bodies. This coming together thus represents a convergence not only of media, participants, contexts, and technologies, but of human experience itself. This coming together is hardly neat, nor fully realized. It is, if nothing else, multifaceted and worthy of further study. It is a convergence in which the dynamics of screen play are reengaged.

N2  - Academic language should not be a ghetto dialect at odds with ordinary language, but rather an extension that is compatible with lay-language. To define ‘game’ with the unrealistic ambition of satisfying both lay-people and experts should not be a major concern for a game ontology, since the field it addresses is subject to cultural evolution and diachronic change. Instead of the impossible mission of turning the common word into an analytic concept, a useful task for an ontology of games is to model game differences, to show how the things we call games can be different from each other in a number of different ways.

N2  - Space is understood best through movement, and complex spaces require not only movement but navigation. The theorization of navigable space requires a conceptual representation of space which is adaptable to the great malleability of video game spaces, a malleability which allows for designs which combine spaces with differing dimensionality and even involve non-Euclidean configurations with contingent connectivity. This essay attempts to describe the structural elements of video game space and to define them in such a way so as to make them applicable to all video game spaces, including potential ones still undiscovered, and to provide analytical tools for their comparison and examination. Along with the consideration of space, there will be a brief discussion of navigational logic, which arises from detectable regularities in a spatial structure that allow players to understand and form expectations regarding a game’s spaces.

N2  - This article presents a situation description production experiment investigating the interaction between syntax and information structure in Akan, a tone language that belongs to the Kwa branch of the Niger- Congo family spoken in Ghana. Information structure was elicited via context questions that put the object in narrow informational focus or narrow corrective focus while controlling for the tonal structure of the target word. Contrary to the prediction that corrective focus is marked by fronting and morphological marking of the focused constituent the data suggest that the in-situ strategy is the preferred one.
