N2  - In a previously published article in HIN under the title of “Eduard Dorsch and his unpublished poem on the occasion of Humboldt’s 100th birthday,” I elaborated on Dorsch’s poem that was read in Detroit in front of a German-American audience on Sept. 14, 1869, a day widely celebrated in the US in honor of Humboldt. Although it was not surprising that Dorsch wrote the occasional poem in the first place given his affinities with Humboldt’s world of thought, a discovery of a second occasional poem upon further research in Dorsch’s voluminous papers was indeed unexpected, in this case read on the same date in Monroe, Michigan. Although there are a number of similarities between the Detroit and Monroe versions, there are enough differences that warrant this addendum to my original article.
N2  - In einem bereits in HIN veröffentlichten Artikel mit dem Titel Eduard Dorsch und sein unveröffentlichtes Gelegenheitsgedicht zu Humboldts 100. Geburtstag ging ich auf Dorschs Gedicht ein, das am 14. September 1869 vor einem deutsch-amerikanischen Publikum in Detroit verlesen wurde, an einem Tag, der überall zu Ehren Humboldts in den USA gefeiert wurde. Obwohl es nicht überraschend ist, dass Dorsch angesichts seiner Affinität zu Humboldts Gedankenwelt das Gedicht überhaupt schrieb, war der Fund eines zweiten Gelegenheitsgedichts in Dorschs umfangreichem Nachlass dennoch unerwartet, in diesem Falle am selben Tag in Monroe, Michigan verlesen. Obwohl es eine Reihe von Ähnlichkeiten zwischen den Detroit- und Monroe-Versionen gibt, tauchen auch genug Unterschiede auf, um diesen Nachtrag zu meinem ursprünglichen Artikel zu rechtfertigen.
N2  - En un artículo ya publicado en HIN bajo el título de "Eduard Dorsch y su poema inédito con motivo del centenario de Humboldt", abordé el poema de Dorsch leído en Detroit frente a una audiencia germano-estadounidense el 14 de septiembre de 1869, un día ampliamente celebrado en los Estados Unidos en honor a Humboldt. Aunque no sorprende que Dorsch escribiera el poema de ocasión debido a sus afinidades con la cosmovisión de Humboldt, lo inesperado fue el hallazgo de un segundo poema para la misma ocasión durante un estudio adicional de los voluminosos papeles de Dorsch. Este segundo poema fue leído en la misma fecha en Monroe, Michigan. Si bien existe una serie de similitudes entre las versiones creadas para Detroit y Monroe, también hay suficientes diferencias que justifican este apéndice a mi artículo original.

El artículo estudia la situación política española en 1799, la posición y el influjo del poderoso ministro Urquijo, cuya caída y sus eventuales consecuencias en territorios americanos, son mencionados en forma pasajera y preocupada por Humboldt. Se transcribe el inusual registro de Humboldt como pasajero de la corbeta Castor, con detalles, algunos tergiversados, sobre el influjo de Georg Forster en su formación, su continuado empleo prusiano, su avance hacia territorio portugués y las dudas por la velocidad del viaje. Estos datos, junto con algunas críticas en Quito, contemporáneas y posteriores, así como problemas de al menos dos de sus interlocutores con la Inquisición limeña, ofrecen una “mirada americana”, ciertamente parcial, a Humboldt y explican, posiblemente, los pocos datos y la percepción negativa de su estadía en Lima.
N2  - Die Humboldtstudien erforschen vorzüglich die Erfahrungen, Veröffentlichungen und wissenschaftlichen Beiträge seiner Reise. Der Artikel befasst sich mit der politischen Situation Spaniens im Jahr 1799, dem Einfluss des mächtigen Ministers Urquijo, dessen Sturz und die eventuellen Folgen in Amerika, von Humboldt besorgt, wenn auch nur kurz erwähnt. Der ungewöhnliche Eintrag im Logbuch der Korvette Castor mit detaillierten, teils verdrehten Daten zu Humboldt, den Einfluss Georg Forsters auf seine Ausbildung, sein weiterbestehendes preussisches Dienstverhältnis, sein Vordringen auf portugiesisches Gebiet sowie die Geschwindigkeit seiner Reise, ergibt, zusammen mit teils zeitgenössischen, teils späteren Kritiken in Quito sowie den Problemen mindestens zweier seiner Gesprächspartner mit der peruanischen Inquisition, einen, sicherlich parteiischen „amerikanischen“ Blick auf Humboldt und erklärt möglicherweise die wenigen Daten und seine negative Sicht auf den Aufenthalt in Lima.
N2  - Humboldt research concentrates on the experiences, publications and scientific contributions of his voyage. This article discusses Spain´s political situation in 1799, the influence of powerful minister Urquijo, his fall and eventual consequences in America, as mentioned shortly but with a certain concern by Humboldt. The unusually detailed Callao log-book register with partly misleading information on Humboldt, Georg Forster´s importance in his education, his ongoing services to the Prussian king, his advance on to Portuguese territory and the speed of his voyage, together with certain criticisms in Quito, some during his stay, others some years later as well as problems with the Peruvian Inquisition of at least two of his Lima interlocutors offer an “American”, though certainly partial view on Humboldt and may explain his limited journal information and negative vision of the Lima sojourn.

N2  - This paper addresses issues of translating both words and rituals as Muslim cemetery keepers care for Jewish graves and recite traditional prayers for the dead in Morocco. Several issues of translation must be dealt with while considering these rare and disappearing practices. The first issue to be discussed is the translation of Hebrew inscriptions into French by cemetery keepers. One cemetery keeper in Meknes has tried to compile an exhaustive index of the names and dates represented on the gravestones under her care. The Muslim guard of the Jewish cemetery in Sefrou, on the other hand, has somewhat famously told visitors differing stories about his ability and willingness to pray the Kaddish over the graves of emigrated relatives who cannot return to mark an anniversary death. These practices provide the context for considering how the act of Muslims caring for Jewish graves creates linguistic and ritual translations of traditional Jewish ancestor care.

N2  - This article explores an instructive case of translation critique against the background of the rise of Zionism in Europe at the turn of the previous century. It seeks to answer the question: Why did David Frishman, one of the most prolific Hebrew writers and translators of the late 1890s and early 1900s, criticize Vladimir Jabotinsky’s Russian translation of Hayim Nahman Bialik’s Hebrew poems? Both Bialik and Jabotinsky were major figures in the field of Hebrew culture and Zionist politics in the early 1900s, while Frishman generally shunned partisan activism and consistently presented himself as devoted solely to literature. Frishman perceived literature, nevertheless, as a political arena, viewing translation, in particular, as a locus of ideological debate. Writing from the viewpoint of a political minority at a time in which the Hebrew translation industry in Europe gained momentum, Frishman deemed translation a tool for cementing cultural hierarchies. He anticipated later analyses of the act and products of translation as reflective of intercultural tensions. The article suggests, more specifically, that it was Frishman’s view of the Hebrew Bible that informed his “avant-garde” stance on translation.

In diesem Zusammenhang wird der Versuch einer Einordnung des sprachlichen Phänomens vorgenommen und eine qualitative Korpusanalyse durchgeführt.

N2  - Zweifellos war Paris mit seinen renommierten wissenschaftlichen Institutionen, seinen Verlagen und wissenschaftlichen Zirkeln, aber auch mit seinen Salons als großes europäisches Zentrum für Alexander von Humboldt der ideale Ort, um seine wissenschaftlichen Arbeiten voranzutreiben und jene sich beschleunigende Zirkulation von Wissen zu beobachten, die seine eigenen Arbeiten beflügelte. Und dennoch war die Entwicklung seines Lebens-Werkes weniger mit einem bestimmten konkreten Ort als vielmehr mit einer Vektorizität verknüpft. Diese tritt in allen Schriften Humboldts in den Überlagerungen der unterschiedlichsten Orte und Landschaften zutage. Quer zu den bis heute in ihren Dimensionen wie in ihren Ergebnissen erstaunlichen Reisen Humboldts zeigt sich eine oszillierende Bewegung, die über einen Zeitraum von nahezu sechs Jahrzehnten Berlin, Potsdam und Paris mit der ‚Neuen Welt‘ und den Debatten um letztere verband.
N2  - Without any doubt, Paris – as a major European centre with its renowned scientific institutions, its publishing houses and scientific circles, but also its salons – was the ideal place for Alexander von Humboldt to advance his scientific work and to
observe the accelerating circulation of knowledge that inspired his writing. And yet, the development of his life’s work was less linked to a specific, concrete place than to a vectoricity. This is
evident in all of Humboldt’s writings in the overlays of the most diverse places and landscapes. Right across Humboldt’s journeys, that were and still are astonishing both in their dimensions and in their results, there is an oscillating movement
that connected Berlin, Potsdam and Paris with the ‘New World’ and the debates about the latter over a period of almost six decades.
N2  - Sans aucun doute, Paris, avec ses institutions scientifiques renommées, ses maisons d’édition et ses cercles scientifiques, mais aussi avec ses salons en tant que centre européen majeur, était pour Alexander von Humboldt l’endroit idéal pour faire avancer son travail scientifique et pour observer la circulation accélérée des connaissances qui a inspiré son écriture. Pourtant, le développement de l’œuvre de sa vie était moins lié à un lieu concret spécifique qu’à une vectoricité. Ceci est évident dans tous les écrits de Humboldt dans les superpositions des lieux et paysages les plus divers. A travers les voyages étonnants de Humboldt, tant dans leurs dimensions que dans leurs résultats, il y a un mouvement oscillant qui a relié Berlin, Potsdam et Paris au ‘Nouveau Monde’, ainsi qu’aux débats sur ce dernier, pendant une période de près de six décennies.

It provides us with impulses and foundations for a 21st century that must be marked by thinking and living together. Today, at the end of our current phase of globalisation, new dimensions of the future can be conceived and developed from the long buried tradition of Humboldtian Science. The thinking together of nature and culture in the horizon of an ecology that is linked to social and economic structures; the drafting of a cosmopolitan policy that does not aim at asymmetry of power, inferiority and dependence, but rather makes the circulation of knowledge the basis of a democratising world society: These are crossroads of a way of thinking that has not only gained in actuality but also in urgency in the face of new nationalisms, new fundamentalisms and new global exclusions.
N2  - Le voyage de recherche d’Alexander von Humboldt dans le Nouveau Monde est un moment fondateur de la science moderne. Il nous donne des impulsions et des fondements pour un 21ème siècle qui doit être marqué par la pensée et le vivre ensemble. Aujourd’hui, à la fin de notre phase actuelle de mondialisation, de nouvelles dimensions de l’avenir peuvent être conçues et développées à partir de la longue tradition enterrée de la science de Humboldt. N2  - Rabbi Jacob ben Isaac of Yanova (d. 1623) is best known as the author of the Ze’enah U-Re’enah; the Melits Yosher (“Intercessor before God”) is one of his lesser known works. It was first published in Lublin in 1622 and reprinted once in Amsterdam in 1688. Like the Ze’enah U-Re’enah, it was a Torah commentary, but composed for men who had some yeshivah education, but who could not continue their studies. The commentary on the Song of Songs by Isaac Sulkes is another Yiddish work that addresses the same audience as the Melits Yosher. The purpose of this article is to bring to scholarly attention an audience that has not been noticed or studied in the previous scholarship on early modern Yiddish literature.

N2  - Hochschulen und deren Zentraleinrichtungen beschäftigen sich zunehmend mit dem Thema Forschungsdatenmanagement (FDM), um ihre Forschenden adäquat zu unterstützen. Nicht zuletzt aufgrund neuer Verlags- und Förderanforderungen wünschen sich Forschende Beratung und Orientierung, wie sie mit ihren Forschungsdaten umgehen sollen. Damit Hochschulen schnell und nachhaltig Lösungen zum institutionellen FDM etablieren können, haben fünf Berliner und Brandenburger Universitäten im gemeinsamen Verbundvorhaben FDMentor mit Förderung des Bundesministeriums für Bildung und Forschung (BMBF) entsprechende Leitfäden und Werkzeuge erarbeitet. Die innerhalb von zwei Jahren (2017–2019) entstandenen Ergebnisse in den Bereichen Strategieentwicklung, Forschungsdaten-Policy, rechtliche Aspekte und Kompetenzausbau finden über das Verbundprojekt hinaus ihre Anwendung.
N2  - Universities and their central units are increasingly concerned with research data management (RDM) in order to adequately support their researchers. Not least because of new publishing and funding policies, researchers seek advice and guidance on how to handle their research data. To enable universities to quickly and sustainably establish institutional RDM solutions, five universities from Berlin and Brandenburg have developed guidelines and tools in the joint project FDMentor funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). The results achieved over a period of two years (2017–2019) in the areas of strategy development, research data policy, legal aspects and competence enhancement are applied beyond the project partners.

Ausgehend von dieser Frage befasst sich der Beitrag mit seinen Klimastudien und zeigt dabei, welch enorme Wirkung diese für viele Länder der Welt hatten. Zahlreiche Aufforstungsmaßnahmen wurden im 19. Jahrhundert durch Humboldts Studien angeregt. Humboldt hat zudem – wohl als erster – die klimaverändernde Wirkung von „großen Dampf- und Gasmassen an den Mittelpunkten der Industrie“ erkannt und außerdem im 3. Band des Kosmos auch den Treibhauseffekt beschrieben. Die Bedrohungen des stetig zunehmenden anthropogenen Klimawandels jedoch konnte er nicht ahnen. Seine und auch die Erkenntnisse der anderen Klimaforscher des 19. Jhds. gerieten Anfang des 20. Jhds. in Vergessenheit. Der gerissene Rezeptionsfaden wurde erst mit der Umweltbewegung in den 1970er Jahren wieder aufgenommen und Alexander von Humboldt als Klimaforscher und „erster Ökologe“ neu bewertet.
N2  - Did Alexander von Humboldt warn about the dramatic consequences of man-made climate change? Based on this question, the article deals with his climate studies and shows the enormous impact this had for many countries in the world. Numerous afforestation attempts were initiated in the 19th century by Humboldt's studies. In addition, Humboldt was the first to recognize the climate-changing effect of "large vapor and gas masses at the centers of industry", and also described the greenhouse effect in Volume 3 of the Cosmos. However, he could not foresee the threats of increasing anthropogenic climate change. His and also the findings of the other climate researchers of the 19th century fell into oblivion at the beginning of the 20th century. The ripped reception thread was then resumed with the environmental movement in the 1970s and Alexander von Humboldt was reassessed as climate researcher and "first ecologist".

Con base en esta pregunta, el artículo trata sobre sus estudios climáticos y muestra el enorme impacto que esto tuvo en muchos países del mundo. Numerosas medidas de forestación se iniciaron en el siglo XIX gracias a los estudios de Humboldt. Además, Humboldt fue el primero en reconocer el efecto de cambio climático de las „grandes masas de vapor y gas en los centros de la industria“, y también describió el efecto invernadero en el Volumen 3 de su obra Cosmos. Sin embargo, él no podía prever las amenazas de un cambio climático antropogénico. Sus hallazgos y los de otros investigadores sobre el clima en el siglo XIX cayeron en el olvido a principios del siglo XX. El hilo roto de la recepción se reanudó con el movimiento ecologista en la década de 1970 y Alexander von Humboldt fue reevaluado como investigador del clima y „primer ecólogo“.

N2  - The Ram Bible (Tanakh Ram) is a recently-published Bible edition printed in two columns: the right-hand column features the original biblical Hebrew text and the lefthand column features the translation of the Bible into a high-register literary Israeli (Reclaimed Hebrew). The Ram Bible edition has gained impressive academic and popular attention. This paper looks at differences between academics, teachers, students, media personalities and senior officials in the education system, regarding their attitude to the Ram Bible. Our study reveals that Bible teachers and students who make frequent use of this edition understand its contribution to comprehending the biblical language, stories, and ideas. Opponents of Ram Bible are typically administrators and theoretician scholars who advocate the importance of teaching the Bible but do not actually teach it themselves. We argue that the fundamental difference between biblical Hebrew and Israeli makes the Hebrew Bible incomprehensible to native Israeli speakers. We explain the advantages of employing tools such as the Ram Bible.

N2  - The conflict in Yemen seems forgotten considering the worldwide severe humanitarian catastrophes. Nevertheless, since the conflict escalated around four years ago, it became one of the worst humanitarian crises in recent history and has no end in sight. Thousands of people were killed even more displaced and the country is facing tremendous food insecurity as well as the world’s largest cholera outbreak. It is no longer just a civil war between the Houthi- and Hadi-Faction. International interests play a major role and made it a proxy war between Saudi Arabia (and its allies) on one side and Iran on the other. This all happens at the expense of the civilian population. Therefore, it is urgent to analyse the actors involved, their interests within the conflict and furthermore searching for possibilities to overcome it.
N2  - Der Konflikt im Jemen scheint angesichts der schweren humanitären Katastrophen weltweit in Vergessenheit geraten zu sein. Dennoch hat sich der Konflikt seit seiner Eskalation vor rund vier Jahren zu einer der schwersten humanitären Krisen der jüngeren Geschichte entwickelt ohne dass ein Ende in Sicht ist. Tausende von Menschen wurden getötet und noch mehr vertrieben; das Land steht vor einer enormen Ernährungsunsi-cherheit und dem größten Cholera-Ausbruch der Welt. Es ist nicht mehr allein ein Bürgerkrieg zwischen der Houthi- und Hadi-Fraktion. Internationale Interessen spielen eine große Rolle. Es handelt sich um einen Stellvertreterkrieg zwischen Saudi-Arabien (und seinen Verbündeten) auf der einen und dem Iran auf der anderen Seite. Dies alles geschieht auf Kosten der Zivilbevölkerung. Daher ist es dringend geboten, die beteiligten Akteure, ihre Interessen im Konflikt zu analysieren und darüber hinaus nach Möglichkeiten zu suchen, diesen zu überwinden.

In kubanischer-deutscher Kooperation erarbeitet, zeigt die Ausstellung Humboldt auf zwei Ebenen: im Kontext seiner Naturerforschung und dem seiner Begegnungen auf der fünfjährigen Amerikareise. Die Ausstellung richtet sich an kubanische wie internationale Besucher. Sie wirft einen hintergründigen und aktuellen Blick auf Humboldt in Amerika und versteht sich als Partner und Forum für Wissenschaft, Bildung und Kultur in Kuba.
N2  - A permanent exhibition on Alexander von Humboldt will be inaugurated in the Cuban capital Havana on 19 December 2019. The Casa Museo Humboldt in Havana’s historic center will be the world’s first museum dedicated to Alexander von Humboldt. Developed in Cuban-German cooperation, the exhibition follows two main perspectives on Humboldt: the context of his research about nature and that of his human encounters during his five-year trip to America. The exhibition is focused both on a Cuban and an international public. It takes a profound and up-to-date look at Humboldt in America and aims to be partner and forum for science, education and culture in Cuba.

Zusammen mit einem unveröffentlichten Manuskript Humboldts sind Teile dieser Sammlung, Originaletiketten sowie die damalige Bestandsliste im Museum für Naturkunde Berlin erhalten. Dieses Marmor-Ensemble wird im vorliegenden Beitrag im Kontext von Reise- und Sammeltraditionen, von wissenschaftsgeschichtlichen Klassifizierungen antiker Marmore sowie in Humboldts Werkzusammenhang vorgestellt.
N2  - During his stay in Rome in 1805, Humboldt undertook a study of antique types of marble and assembled a collection. Together with an unpublished manuscript by Humboldt, parts of this collection as well as original labels and the contemporary inventory list are preserved in the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin (Berlin Natural History Museum). In this contribution, this marble collection is presented in the contexts of traditions of travelling and collecting, of classifications of antique marble within the history of science, and of Humboldt’s work as a whole.
N2  - Lors de son séjour à Rome en 1805, Humboldt entreprit une étude des types de marbre anciens et rassembla une collection. Avec un manuscrit inédit de Humboldt, des parties de cette collection ainsi que des étiquettes originales et la liste contemporaine d'inventaire sont conservées au Museum für Naturkunde Berlin (Musée d'histoire naturelle de Berlin). Dans cette contribution, cette collection de marbre est présentée dans le contexte des traditions de voyage et de collection, des classifications du marbre antique dans l'histoire de la science et de l'œuvre de Humboldt dans son ensemble.

N2  - Dieser Artikel untersucht die Rolle Alexander von Humboldts als Förderer einer ikonographischen Repräsentation der Neuen Welt. Humboldts Ziel war es, ein neues Bild von Amerika zu liefern, basierend auf realen Ereignissen, die in situ und nicht in der europäischen Fantasie stattfanden. Diese Darstellung verbindet seine strenge wissenschaftliche Vision mit seiner ausgeprägten künstlerischen Sensibilität und verwendet sowohl textliche als auch visuelle Elemente, um das erzeugte Wissen zu transportieren. In diesem Beitrag werden die Quellen analysiert, die Humboldt dazu inspirierten, das zu entwickeln, was wir heute unter "wissenschaftlicher Kunst" verstehen, sowie die Kriterien, die für dieses Genre gelten sollten. Ausgehend von der Bedeutung, die die Reisemalerei für sein großes amerikanisches Projekt hatte, ist auch seine Interaktion mit den Anfängen des neuen Mediums Fotografie und die Vorteile, die er in diesem wichtigen technologischen Fortschritt sah, von besonderem Interesse.
N2  - This paper studies the role Alexander von Humboldt played as forerunner of an iconographic representation of the New World. Humboldt’s aim was to provide a new image of America, based on actual facts, found in situ, and not coming out of the European imagination. This representation lies somewhere between his rigorous scientific vision and its combination with his elaborate artistic sensibility, therefore using both textual and visual elements to convey the knowledge produced. In this work, the sources that inspired Humboldt to develop what today is known as “scientific art” as well as the criteria that should be applied to this genre, are analyzed. Starting with the relevance of travel painting for his great American project, it is of particular interest the study of its interaction with the incipient photographic technology, as well as the benefits he identified on the utilization of this innovation.
N2  - Este artículo estudia el papel de Alexander von Humboldt como promotor de una representación iconográfica del Nuevo Mundo. El objetivo de Humboldt era proporcionar una nueva imagen de América, basada en hechos reales, encontrados in situ, y no en la fantasía europea. Esta representación se sitúa entre su estricta visión científica, y su combinación con su elaborada sensibilidad artística, y, por lo tanto, utiliza tanto elementos textuales como visuales para transportar el conocimiento producido. En este trabajo se analizan las fuentes que inspiraron a Humboldt para desarrollar lo que hoy entendemos por «arte científico» así como los criterios que deberían aplicarse a este género. Partiendo de la importancia que tuvo la pintura de viaje para su gran proyecto americano, interesa de particular manera su interacción con los inicios del nuevo medio de la fotografía y las ventajas que él vio en este importante avance tecnológico.

N2  - Während das Fehlen einer religiösen Haltung in Humboldts Werk, sowie die Kritik, die er diesbezüglich erhalten hat, allgemein bekannt sind, ist sein möglicher Bezug zur Freimaurerei noch weitgehend unerforscht. Zwar erscheint Humboldt auf einigen Listen von „illustren Freimaurern“, zudem tragen mehrere Logen seinen Namen, aber die Frage bleibt offen, ob Humboldt wirklich ein Freimaurer war. Wenn ja, wann und wo ist er einer Loge beigetreten? Gibt es vielleicht Kommentare von ihm zu dieser Art von Geheimbünden? Und wer waren die bekanntesten Freimaurer in seiner Umgebung? Der Artikel beantwortet diese Punkte, aber wichtiger noch geht er der Frage nach, was eine Mitgliedschaft für Humboldts wissenschaftliche Arbeit bedeutet haben könnte, insbesondere im Hinblick auf den herausragenden Erfolg, den er in den Vereinigten Staaten zu Beginn des 19. Jahrhunderts hatte und die Gründe hierfür. Was hätten solche Verbindungen für ihn bedeutet und wie wurde er von den wichtigsten freimaurerischen Persönlichkeiten und Logen in der transatlantischen Welt wahrgenommen?
N2  - While the lack of religion in Alexander von Humboldt’s work and the criticism he received is well known, his relationship with Freemasonry is relatively unexplored. Humboldt appears on some lists of “illustrious Masons,” and several lodges carry his name, but was he really a member? If so, when and where did he join a lodge? Are there any comments by him about Freemasonry? Who were the renowned Masons he was surrounded by? This paper examines these questions, but more importantly it analyzes what a membership might have meant for Humboldt’s scholarly work. It looks particularly at the unprecedented success he enjoyed in the United States in the early 19th century and the factors behind it. What could he have gained from these connections and how was he viewed by Masonic leaders and lodges in the trans-Atlantic world?
N2  - Mientras que la falta de religiosidad en la obra de Alexander von Humboldt, así como las críticas por ello recibidas, son bien conocidas, su posible relación con la masonería es relativamente incógnita. Humboldt aparece en algunas listas de “masones ilustres” y varias logias llevan su nombre pero, ¿fue realmente miembro de una de ellas? Y en este supuesto, ¿cuándo y dónde se adhirió?, ¿existen comentarios suyos sobre la masonería?, ¿qué masones de renombre le rodearon? Este artículo estudia estas cuestiones pero, de manera más importante, analiza lo que la membresía de una logia masónica podría haber significado para el trabajo académico de Humboldt. En particular, mira el éxito sin precedentes del que disfrutó en los Estados Unidos a comienzos del siglo xix y los motivos para ello. ¿Qué podria haber ganado de estas conexiones y cómo fue visto por los líderes y logias masónicas en el mundo transatlántico?

N2  - Scholars of modern Jewish thought explore the hermeneutics of “translation” to describe the transference of concepts between discourses. I suggest a more radical approach – translation as transvaluation – is required. Eschewing modern tests of truth such as “the author would have accepted it” and “the author should have accepted it,” this radical form of translation is intentionally unfaithful to original meanings. However, it is not a reductionist reading or a liberating text. Instead, it is a persistent squabble depending on both source and translation for sustenance. Exploring this paradigm entails a review of three expositions of the Korah biblical narrative; three readings dedicated to keeping an eye on current events: (1) Tsene-rene (Prague, 1622), biblical prose; (2) Yaldei Yisrael Kodesh, (Tel Aviv, 1973), a secular Zionist reworking of Tsene-rene; and (3) The Jews are Coming (Israel, 2014–2017) a satirical television show.
