Collision induced dissociation via MSn experiments were performed for the sodiated molecules of m/z 769 [M+Na](+) for each isomer, and fragments were generated mainly by glycosidic bond and cross-ring cleavages. Rules of fragmentation were then established. A reducing end D residue yields the (O.2)A(4) cross-ring [M-59+Na](+) fragment of m/z 710 as the most abundant, whereas isomers containing a reducing end A prefer to lose water to form the [M-18+Na](+) ion of m/z 751, as well as abundant (O.2)A(4) cross-ring [M-101+Na](+) fragments of m/z 668 and B-3 [M-221+Na](+) ions of m/z 548. MS3 of C- and Y-type ions shows analogous fragmentation behaviour that allows identification of the reducing end next-neighbour residue. Due to gas-phase anchimeric assistance, B-type cleavage between the glycosidic oxygen and the anomeric carbon atom is favoured when the glycon is an A residue. Relative ion abundances are generally in the order B >> C > Y, but may vary depending on the next neighbour towards the non-reducing end. These fragmentation rules were used for partial sequence analysis of hetero-chitooligosaccharides of the composition D(2)A(3), D(3)A(3), D(2)A(4), D(4)A(3), and D(3)A(4). The balance between both systems is often disturbed in cardiovascular diseases. To define the cardiac effect of excessive ET-1 in a status of nitric oxide deficiency, we compared left ventricular function and morphology in wild-type mice, ET-1 transgenic (ET+/+) mice, endothelial nitric oxide synthase knockout (eNOS(-/-)) mice, and ET(+/+)eNOS(-/-) mice. Methods and results eNOS(-/-) and ET(+/+)eNOS(-/-) mice developed high blood pressure compared with wild-type and ET+/+ mice. Left ventricular catheterization showed that eNOS(-/-) mice, but not ET(+/+)eNOS(-/-), developed diastolic dysfunction characterized by increased end-diastolic pressure and relaxation constant tau. To elucidate the causal molecular mechanisms driving the rescue of diastolic function in ET(+/+)eNOS(-/-) mice, the cardiac proteome was analyzed. Two-dimensional gel electrophoresis coupled to mass spectrometry offers an appropriate hypothesis-free approach. ET-1 overexpression on an eNOS(-/-) background led to an elevated abundance and change in posttranslational state of antioxidant enzymes (e. g., peroxiredoxin-6, glutathione S-transferase mu 2, and heat shock protein beta 7). In contrast to ET(+/+)eNOS(-/-) mice, eNOS(-/-) mice showed an elevated abundance of proteins responsible for sarcomere disassembly (e. g., cofilin-1 and cofilin-2). In ET(+/+)eNOS(-/-) mice, glycolysis was favored at the expense of fatty acid oxidation. Conclusion eNOS(-/-) mice developed diastolic dysfunction; this was rescued by ET-1 transgenic overexpression. This study furthermore suggests that cardiac ET-1 overexpression in case of eNOS deficiency causes specifically the regulation of proteins playing a role in oxidative stress, myocytes contractility, and energy metabolism. The megalospheric generation of each genus exhibits a distinctive shell shape in adult specimens (i.e., fan-shaped in Cyclopseudedomia, conical in Rhapydionina, and cylindrical in Cuvillierinella). Although their microspheric adults are similarly thin, flat, and discoidal, they can be identified at the genus level by means of a detailed structural analysis. Cavillierinella shows the septula to be interrupted by a large preseptal space, while Cyclopseudedomia and Rhapydionina exhibit continuous, non-interrupted septula. In addition, Cyclopseudedomia presents only one row of medullar chamberlets, whereas Rhapydionina shows numerous medullar chamberlets distributed in a thick basal layer. Two new species, Cuvillierinella pylosensis and Rhapydionina fleuryi, are described. The former is a more complex taxon than the type species, C salentina, while the latter corresponds to a more primitive species, R. liburnica. Strontium-isotope stratigraphy indicates an uppermost Campanian-lowermost Maastrichtian age for these new species. A comparison of the monotreme cochlea with that of marsupial and placental mammals highlights important evolutionary steps towards a hearing organ dedicated to process higher frequencies and a larger frequency range than found in non-mammalian vertebrates. Among placental mammals, there are numerous cochlear specializations which relate to hearing range in adaptation to specific habitats that are superimposed on a common basic design. These are illustrated by examples of specialist ears which evolved excellent high frequency hearing and echolocation (bats and dolphins) and by the example of subterranean rodents with ears devoted to processing low frequencies. Furthermore, structural functional correlations important for tonotopic cochlear organization and predictions of hearing capabilities are discussed. The tsunami waves that followed this event affected the coastal regions between the cities of Valparaiso and Valdivia, with minor effects as far as Coquimbo. The earthquake occurred along the subduction of the Nazca oceanic plate beneath the South American plate. Coseismic coastal uplift was estimated through observations of bleached lithothamnioids crustose coralline algae, which were exposed after the mainshock between 34.13 degrees S and 38.34 degrees S, suggesting the latitudinal distribution of the earthquake rupture. The measured coastal uplift values varied between 240 +/- 20 cm at sites closer to the trench along the western coast of the Arauco peninsula and 15 +/- 10 cm at sites located farther east. A maximum value of 260 +/- 50 cm was observed at the western coast of Santa Maria Island, which is similar to the reported uplift associated with the 1835 earthquake at Concepcion. Land subsidence values on the order of 0.5 m to 1 m evidenced a change in polarity and position of the coseismic hinge at 110-120 km from the trench. In four sites along the coast we observed a close match between coastal uplift values deduced from bleached lithothamnioids algae and GPS measurements. According to field observations tsunami heights reached ea. 14 m in the coastal area of the Maule Region immediately north of the epicenter, and diminished progressively northwards to 4-2 m near Valparaiso. Along the coast of Cobquecura, tsunami height values were inferior to 2-4 m. More variable tsunami heights of 6-8 m were measured at Dichato-Talcahuano and Tirua-Puerto Saavedra, in the Biobio and Arauco regions, respectively, to the south of the epicenter. According to eyewitnesses, the tsunami reached the coast between 12 to 20 and 30 to 45 minutes in areas located closer and faraway from the earthquake rupture zone, respectively. Destructive tsunami waves arrived also between 2.5 and 4.5 hours after the mainshock, especially along the coast of the Biobio and Arauco regions. The tsunami effects were highly variable along the coast, as a result of geomorphological and bathymetric local conditions, besides potential complexities induced by the main shock. Several of these variable traits in phytoplankton have been interpreted as defence mechanisms against grazing. Zooplankton feed with differing success on various phytoplankton species, depending primarily on size, shape, cell wall structure and the production of toxins and deterrents. Chemical cues associated with (i) mechanical damage, (ii) herbivore presence and (iii) grazing are the main factors triggering induced defences in both marine and freshwater phytoplankton, but most studies have failed to disentangle the exact mechanism(s) governing defence induction in any particular species. Induced defences in phytoplankton include changes in morphology (e.g. the formation of spines, colonies and thicker cell walls), biochemistry (such as production of toxins, repellents) and in life history characteristics (formation of cysts, reduced recruitment rate). Our categorization of inducible defences in terms of the responsible induction mechanism provides guidance for future work, as hardly any of the available studies on marine or freshwater plankton have performed all the treatments that are required to pinpoint the actual cue(s) for induction. T1 - Remediation of groundwater contaminated with MTBE and benzene the potential of vertical-flow soil filter systems JF - Water research N2 - Field investigations on the treatment of MTBE and benzene from contaminated groundwater in pilot or full-scale constructed wetlands are lacking hugely. The aim of this study was to develop a biological treatment technology that can be operated in an economic, reliable and robust mode over a long period of time. Two pilot-scale vertical-flow soil filter eco-technologies, a roughing filter (RF) and a polishing filter (PF) with plants (willows), were operated independently in a single-stage configuration and coupled together in a multi-stage (RF + PF) configuration to investigate the MTBE and benzene removal performances. Both filters were loaded with groundwater from a refinery site contaminated with MTBE and benzene as the main contaminants, with a mean concentration of 2970 +/- 816 and 13,966 +/- 1998 mu g L(-1), respectively. Four different hydraulic loading rates (HLRs) with a stepwise increment of 60, 120, 240 and 480 L m(-2) d(-1) were applied over a period of 388 days in the single-stage operation. At the highest HLR of 480 L m(-2)d(-1), the mean concentrations of MTBE and benzene were found to be 550 +/- 133 and 65 +/- 123 mu g L(-1) in the effluent of the RF. In the effluent of the PP system, respective mean MTBE and benzene concentrations of 49 +/- 77 and 0.5 +/- 0.2 mu g L(-1) were obtained, which were well below the relevant MTBE and benzene limit values of 200 and 1 mu g L-1 for drinking water quality. But a dynamic fluctuation in the effluent MTBE concentration showed a lack of stability in regards to the increase in the measured values by nearly 10%, which were higher than the limit value. Therefore, both (RF + PF) filters were combined in a multi-stage configuration and the combined system proved to be more stable and effective with a highly efficient reduction of the MTBE and benzene concentrations in the effluent. Nearly 70% of MTBE and 98% of benzene were eliminated from the influent groundwater by the first vertical filter (RF) and the remaining amount was almost completely diminished (similar to 100% reduction) after passing through the second filter (PF), with a mean MTBE and benzene concentration of 5 +/- 10 and 0.6 +/- 0.2 mu g L(-1) in the final effluent. The emission rate of volatile organic compounds mass into the air from the systems was less than 1% of the inflow mass loading rate. The results obtained in this study not only demonstrate the feasibility of vertical-flow soil filter systems for treating groundwater contaminated with MTBE and benzene, but can also be considered a major step forward towards their application under full-scale conditions for commercial purposes in the oil and gas industries. Reports on amphiphilic block copolymers have now established the basis of their self-assembly behavior: aggregate sizes, morphologies and stability can be explained from the absolute and relative block lengths, the nature of the blocks, the architecture and also solvent selectiveness. In water, self-assembly of amphiphilic block copolymers is assumed to be driven by the hydrophobic. The motivation of this thesis is to study the influence on the self-assembly in water of A b B type block copolymers (with A hydrophilic) of the variation of the hydrophilicity of B from non-soluble (hydrophobic) to totally soluble (hydrophilic). Glucose-modified polybutadiene-block-poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) copolymers were prepared and their self-assembly behavior in water studied. The copolymers formed vesicles with an asymmetric membrane with a glycosylated exterior and poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) on the inside. Above the low critical solution temperature (LCST) of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide), the structure collapsed into micelles with a hydrophobic PNIPAM core and glycosylated exterior. This collapse was found to be reversible. As a result, the structures showed a temperature-dependent interaction with L-lectin proteins and were shown to be able to encapsulate organic molecules. Several families of double hydrophilic block copolymers (DHBC) were prepared. The blocks of these copolymers were biopolymers or polymer chimeras used in aqueous two-phase partition systems. Copolymers based on dextran and poly(ethylene glycol) blocks were able to form aggregates in water. Dex6500-b-PEG5500 copolymer spontaneously formed vesicles with PEG as the “less hydrophilic” barrier and dextran as the solubilizing block. The aggregates were found to be insensitive to the polymer's architecture and concentration (in the dilute range) and only mildly sensitive to temperature. Variation of the block length, yielded different morphologies. A longer PEG chain seemed to promote more curved aggregates following the inverse trend usually observed in amphiphilic block copolymers. A shorter dextran promoted vesicular structures as usually observed for the amphiphilic counterparts. The linking function was shown to have an influence of the morphology but not on the self-assembly capability in itself. The vesicles formed by dex6500-b-PEG5500 showed slow kinetics of clustering in the presence of Con A lectin. In addition both dex6500-b-PEG5500 and its crosslinked derivative were able to encapsulate fluorescent dyes. Two additional dextran-based copolymers were synthesized, dextran-b-poly(vinyl alcohol) and dextran-b-poly(vinyl pyrrolidone). The study of their self-assembly allowed to conclude that aqueous two-phase systems (ATPS) is a valid source of inspiration to conceive DHBCs capable of self-assembling. In the second part the principle was extended to polypeptide systems with the synthesis of a poly(N-hydroxyethylglutamine)-block-poly(ethylene glycol) copolymer. The copolymer that had been previously reported to have emulsifying properties was able to form vesicles by direct dissolution of the solid in water. Last, a series of thermoresponsive copolymers were prepared, dextran-b-PNIPAMm. These polymers formed aggregates below the LCST. Their structure could not be unambiguously elucidated but seemed to correspond to vesicles. Above the LCST, the collapse of the PNIPAM chains induced the formation of stable objects of several hundreds of nanometers in radius that evolved with increasing temperature. The cooling of these solution below LCST restored the initial aggregates. This self-assembly of DHBC outside any stimuli of pH, ionic strength, or temperature has only rarely been described in the literature. This work constituted the first formal attempt to frame the phenomenon. Two reasons were accounted for the self-assembly of such systems: incompatibility of the polymer pairs forming the two blocks (enthalpic) and a considerable solubility difference (enthalpic and entropic). The entropic contribution to the positive Gibbs free energy of mixing is believed to arise from the same loss of conformational entropy that is responsible for “the hydrophobic effect” but driven by a competition for water of the two blocks. In that sense this phenomenon should be described as the “hydrophilic effect”. N2 - Blockcopolymere erfahren ein stetig wachsendes Interesse, was an der steigenden Anzahl an Publikationen zu diesem Thema erkennbar ist. Zahlreiche Studien zu amphiphilen Blockcopolymeren haben dabei einige grundlegende Erkenntnisse über deren chemisches und physikalisches Verhalten, vor allem über die Selbstorganisation, hervorgebracht. So können die Größe, die verschiedenen Morphologien und auch die Stabilität der gebildeten Aggregate anhand der relativen und absoluten Blocklängen, die chemischen Struktur der Blöcke, der molekularen Architektur und der Eigenschaften des verwendeten Lösungsmittel erklärt werden. Im speziellen Fall des Wassers als Lösungsmittel bist die Selbstorganisation amphiphiler Blockcopolymere durch den hydrophoben Effekt bedingt. Dieser Arbeit liegt das Interesse an der Selbstorganisation in wässrigem Medium von Blockcopolymeren des Typs A-b-B mit A als hydrophilem Block und B als Block mit variierender Hydrophilie bzw. Hydrophpobie von unlöslich bis vollständig löslich zugrunde. Durch Variation dieser Eigenschaften von Block B soll dessen Einfluss auf das Selbstorganisationsverhalten untersucht werden. Dazu wurden mit Glucose modifizierte Polybutadien-block-Poly(N-Isopropylacrylamid)-Copolymere hergestellt und deren Selbstorganisation in Wasser untersucht. Die Copolymere bilden Vesikel mit einer asymmetrischen Membran, wobei im äußeren Bereich glycolysierte Gruppen und im inneren Bereich Poly(N-Isopropylacrylamid) (PNIPAM) vorliegen. Beim Überschreiten der low critical solution temperature (LCST) kollabiert die vesikuläre Struktur unter Bildung von Mizellen mit einem hydrophoben PNIPAM-Mizellinneren und nach außen gerichteten glycolysierten Blöcken. Diese strukturelle Umwandlung ist reversibel. Die Strukturen zeigten außerdem eine temperaturabhängige Wechselwirkung mit L-Lectin-Proteinen und die Möglichkeit zur Einkapselung organischer Moleküle konnte belegt werden. Des weiteren wurden verschiedene Gruppen von Blockcopolymeren mit zwei hydrophilen Blöcken synthetisiert (double hydrophilic block copolymers – DHBC). Die Blöcke dieser Systeme waren entweder Biopolymere oder Polymerchimäre, die in wässrigen Zwei-Phasen-Trennverfahren eingesetzt werden. Polymere, die auf Dextran- und Poly(ethylenglycol)-Blöcken basieren, zeigen Aggregatbildung in wässriger Phase. Dex6500-b-PEG5500 bildet spontan Vesikel mit PEG als „weniger hydrophilem“ Bestandteil und Dextran als löslichem Block. Die Bildung dieser Vesikel zeigte keine Emfpindlichkeit gegenüber einer Veränderung der Polymerarchitektur und der Konzentration, und nur eine geringe Sensitivität gegenüber Temperaturänderungen. Veränderungen der Blocklängen dagegen beeinflussten die Selbstorganisation und führten zu unterschiedlichen Morphologien. Längere PEG-Blöcke bevorzugten dabei die Bildung eher gekrümmter Aggregate, entgegen dem Trend, der gewöhnlicherweise für amphiphile Blockcopolymere beobachtet wird. Die Verkürzung des Dextran-Blocks fördert die Ausbildung vesikulärer Strukturen, was dem Verhalten der amphiphilen Gegenspieler der DHBC-Systeme entspricht. Die funktionelle Gruppe zur Verbindung der beiden Blöcke hat zwar einen Einfluss auf die Morphologie der gebildeten Aggregate, nicht jedoch auf die eigentliche Fähigkeit der Systeme zur Selbstorganisation. Die Dex6500-b-PEG5500-Vesikel wiesen zudem eine langsame Bildungskinetik in Gegenwart von Con-A-Lectin auf. Des Weiteren waren sowohl Dex6500-b-PEG5500 als auch das quervernetzte Derivate dieses Copolymers in der Lage, Fluoreszenzfarbstoffe einzulagern. Um zu zeigen, dass wässrige Zwei-Phasen-Systeme (aqueous two phase systems – ATPS) eine belastbare Grundlage für die Untersuchung und Entwicklung selbstorganisierender DHBC-Systeme sind, wurden weitere Dextran-basierte Copolymere synthetsisiert: Dextran-b-Poly(vinylalokohol) und Detran-b-Poly(vinylpyrrolidon). In einem zweiten Teil dieser Arbeit wurde das zuvor erarbeitete Prinzip auf auf Polypeptidsysteme ausgeweitet. Dazu wurde ein Poly(N-Hydroxyethylglutamin)-block-Poly(ethylenglycol)-Copolymer hergestellt. Dieses Copolymer, dessen emulgierenden Eigenschaften bereits bekannt waren, wies unmittelbar nach Lösung des Feststoffes in Wasser Vesikelbildung auf. In einem dritten Teil der Studie wurden thermoresponsive Copolymere hergestellt und untersucht: Dextran-b-PNIPAMm. Unterhalb der LCST konnte die Bildung von Aggregaten nachgewiesen werden, deren Struktur nicht zweifelsfrei entschlüsselt werden konnte, wobei jedoch zahlreiche Hinweise auf eine vesikuläre Struktur hindeuten. Oberhalb der LCST wurde durch die Kollabierung der PNIPAM-Ketten die Bildung stabiler Strukturen mit Radien von mehreren hundert Nanometern induziert, deren weitere Entwicklung durch eine weitere Temperaturerhöhung gefördert werden konnte. Durch Rückkühlung in den Temperaturebereich unterhalb der LCST konnten die zuvor beobachteten Aggregate reversibel zurückgebildet werden. Das Selbstorganisationsverhalten von DHBC, unabhängig vom Einfluss des pH-Werts, der Ionenstärke oder der Temperatur are bisher nur in sehr geringem Umfang Gegenstand wissenschaftlicher Veröffentlichungen. Diese Arbeit stellt damit den ersten umfassenden Beitrag zur systematischen Erarbeitung dieses Phänomens dar. Es konnten dabei zwei Ursachen für die beobachteten Selbstorganisationseffekte bestimmt werden: die Inkompatibilität der beiden Polymerblöcke (enthalpischer Effekt) und der Unterschied in deren Löslichkeit (enthalpische und entropische Effekte). Der entropische Beitrag zur positiven Gibbs’schen Freien Mischungsenergie wird dem selben Verlust konformativer Entropie zugeordnet, der auch für den hydrophoben Effekt verantwortlich ist, allerdings angetrieben durch einen Wettbewerb der beiden Polymerblöcke um das Wasser. In diesem Sinne kann man das beobachtete Phänomen als „hydrophilen Effekt“ bezeichnen. Using models of SAMs of increasing complexity (dimer, linear N-mers, and two-dimensionally arranged N-mers) and density functional theory on the (TD-) B3LYP/6-31G* level, we determine optical absorption spectra, the nature and magnitude of excitonic couplings, and the corresponding spectral shifts. It is found that at inter-monomer distances of about 20 angstrom and above, TD-B3LYP excitation frequencies (and signal intensities) can be well described by the frequently used point-dipole approximation. Further, calculated blue shifts in optical absorption spectra account for the experimental observations made for azobenzene/gold SAMs, and hint to the fact that they can indeed be responsible for reduced switching probability in densely packed self-assembled structures. Here, non-optimized (chloroform cast) and nearly optimized (solvent-annealed o-dichlorobenzene cast) P3HT:PCBM blend films treated over a range of annealing temperatures are studied via optical and photovoltaic device measurements. Parameters related to the P3HT aggregate morphology in the blend are obtained through a recently established analytical model developed by F. C. Spano for the absorption of weakly interacting H-aggregates. Thermally induced changes are related to the glass transition range of the blend. In the chloroform prepared devices, the improvement in device efficiency upon annealing within the glass transition range can be attributed to the growth of P3HT aggregates, an overall increase in the percentage of chain crystallinity, and a concurrent increase in the hole mobilities. Films treated above the glass transition range show an increase in efficiency and fill factor not only associated with the change in chain crystallinity, but also with a decrease in the energetic disorder. On the other hand, the properties of the P3HT phase in the solvent-annealed o-dichlorobenzene cast blends are almost indistinguishable from those of the corresponding pristine P3HT layer and are only weakly affected by thermal annealing. Apparently, slow drying of the blend allows the P3HT chains to crystallize into large domains with low degrees of intra- and interchain disorder. This morphology appears to be most favorable for the efficient generation and extraction of charges. Aiming at examining the impact of literacy on oral language processing and its implication on aphasia tests, this study tested 12 non-literate and 12 literate individuals with a modified Amharic version of the Bilingual Aphasia Test (Paradis and Amberber, 1991, Bilingual Aphasia Test. Methods: The effect of wild ungulate grazing and browsing was studied in three successional stages: (1) Corynephorus canescens-dominated grassland; (2) ruderal tall forb vegetation dominated by Tanacetum vulgare; and (3) Pinus sylvestris-pioneer forest. The study was conducted over 3 yr. In each successional stage, six paired 4 m(2)-monitoring plots of permanently grazed versus ungrazed plots were arranged in three random blocks. Removal of grazing was introduced de novo for the study. In each plot, percentage cover of each plant and lichen species and total cover of woody plants was recorded. Results: Wild ungulates considerably affected successional pathways and species composition in open habitats but this influence became evident in alteration of abundances of only a few species. Grazing effects differed considerably between successional stages: species richness was higher in grazed versus ungrazed ruderal and pioneer forest plots, but not in the Corynephorus sites. Herbivory affected woody plant cover only in the Pioneer forest sites. Although the study period was too short to observe drastic changes in species richness and woody plant cover, notable changes in species composition were still detected in all successional stages. Conclusion: Wild ungulate browsing is a useful tool to inhibit encroachment of woody vegetation and to conserve a species-rich, open landscape. Our goal is to tailor laser pulses to selectively excite specific modes and vibrational eigenstates, as well as to favor photodesorption of the adsorbed molecule. To this end, various control schemes and algorithms are applied. For adsorbates at metallic surfaces, the creation of electron hole pairs in the substrate is known to play a dominant role in the transfer of energy from the system to the surroundings. These nonadiabatic couplings are included perturbatively in our reduced density matrix simulations using a generalization of the state-resolved position-dependent anharmonic rate model we recently introduced. An extension of the reduced density matrix is also proposed to provide a sound model for photodesorption in dissipative systems. Dissipation is treated implicitly using the Lindblad formalism. To include the effect of ionization on the state-resolved dynamics, we extend a recently introduced heuristic model for ionizing states to the rho-TDCI method, which leads to a reduced density matrix evolution that is not norm-preserving. We apply the new method to the laser-driven excitation of H(2) in a strongly dissipative environment, for which the state-resolve lifetimes are tuned to a few femtoseconds, typical for dynamics of adsorbate at metallic surfaces. Further testing is made on the laser-induced intramolecular charge transfer in a quinone derivative as a model for a molecular switch. A modified scheme to treat ionizing states is proposed to reduce the computational burden associated with the density matrix propagation, and it is thoroughly tested and compared to the results obtained with the former model. The new approach scales favorably (similar to N(2)) with the number of configurations N used to represent the reduced density matrix in the rho-TDCI method, as compared to a N(3) scaling for the model in its original form. The methods are tested on the vibrational control of adsorbates at metallic surfaces and on the ultrafast electron dynamics in a strong dissipative medium. The selective excitation of the specific states is achieved with improved yield when using the new algorithms. Both methods exhibit similar convergence behavior and results compare well with those obtained using local optimal control for the reduced density matrix. The favorable scaling of the methods allows to tackle larger systems and to control photochemical reactions in dissipative media of molecules with many more degrees of freedom. When indicators of parental social background and school-leaving qualifications were controlled, the opening of upper secondary education was found to be associated with a decrease in the social selectivity of upper secondary education for intermediate-track students. At the same time, for those intermediate-track students who were entitled to enter upper secondary education, social background had predictive effects on the transition decision; however, the overall size of these effects was low. In this context, the H/V technique has become increasingly popular and peak frequencies of H/V spectral ratio are sometimes interpreted as resonance frequencies of the transmission response. In the present study, assuming that Rayleigh surface wave is dominant in H/V spectral ratio, we analyse theoretically under which conditions this may be justified and when not. We focus on 'layer over half-space' models which, although seemingly simple, capture many aspects of local site effects in real sedimentary structures. Our starting point is the ellipticity of Rayleigh waves. We use the exact formula of the H/V-ratio presented by Malischewsky & Scherbaum (2004) to investigate the main characteristics of peak and trough frequencies. We present a simple formula illustrating if and where H/V-ratio curves have sharp peaks in dependence of model parameters. In addition, we have constructed a map, which demonstrates the relation between the H/V-peak frequency and the peak frequency of the transmission response in the domain of the layer's Poisson ratio and the impedance contrast. Finally, we have derived maps showing the relationship between the H/V-peak and trough frequency and key parameters of the model such as impedance contrast. These maps are seen as diagnostic tools, which can help to guide the interpretation of H/V spectral ratio diagrams in the context of site effect studies. We have mapped the Carina star-forming complex in X-rays, using archival Chandra data and a mosaic of 20 new 60 ks pointings using the Chandra X-ray Observatory's Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer, as a testbed for understanding recent and ongoing star formation and to probe Carina's regions of bright diffuse X-ray emission. This study has yielded a catalog of properties of > 14,000 X-ray point sources;> 9800 of them have multiwavelength counterparts. Using Chandra's unsurpassed X-ray spatial resolution, we have separated these point sources from the extensive, spatially-complex diffuse emission that pervades the region; X-ray properties of this diffuse emission suggest that it traces feedback from Carina's massive stars. In this introductory paper, we motivate the survey design, describe the Chandra observations, and present some simple results, providing a foundation for the 15 papers that follow in this special issue and that present detailed catalogs, methods, and science results. This is the first well-documented geologic slip rate between the Carrizo and creeping sections of the San Andreas fault. This rate is lower than Holocene measurements along the Carrizo Plain and rates implied by far-field geodetic measurements (similar to 35 mm/yr). However, the rate is consistent with historical slip rates, measured to the northwest, along the creeping section of the San Andreas fault (<30 mm/yr). The paleoseismic exposures at the Miller's Field site reveal a pervasive fabric of clay shear bands, oriented clockwise oblique to the San Andreas fault strike and extending into the uppermost stratigraphy. This fabric is consistent with dextral aseismic creep and observations of surface slip from the 28 September 2004 M6 Parkfield earthquake. Together, this slip rate and deformation fabric suggest that the historically observed San Andreas fault slip behavior along the Parkfield section has persisted for at least a millennium, and that significant slip is accommodated by structures in a zone beyond the main San Andreas fault trace. Central stars that exhibit emission lines in their spectra, indicating stellar mass-loss allow to study the evolution of planetary nebulae in action. Emission line central stars constitute about 10 % of all central stars. Half of them are practically hydrogen-free Wolf-Rayet type central stars of the carbon sequence, [WC], that show strong emission lines of carbon and oxygen in their spectra. In this contribution we address the weak emission-lines central stars (wels). These stars are poorly analyzed and their hydrogen content is mostly unknown. We obtained optical spectra, that include the important Balmer lines of hydrogen, for four weak emission line central stars. We present the results of our analysis, provide spectral classification and discuss possible explanations for their formation and evolution. In-situ X-ray diffraction and RAMAN spectroscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, UV/Vis diffuse-reflectance and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy as well as time-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy were used to characterize the nanaocrystals. The as-synthesized powders are nanocrystalline and have a narrow size distribution centered on 3 nm and high surface area of similar to 250 m(2) g(-1). Only a small fraction of the europium ions substitutes for the bulk, cubic Ce4+ sites in the europium-doped ceria nanocrystals. Upon calcination up to 1000 degrees C, a remarkable high surface area of similar to 120 m(2) g (-1) is preserved whereas an enrichment of the surface Ce4+ relative to Ce3+ ions and relative strong europium emission with a lifetime of similar to 1.8 ms and FWHM as narrow as 10 cm(-1) are measured. Under excitation into the UV and visible spectral range, the europium doped ceria nanocrystals display a variable emission spanning the orange-red wavelengths. The tunable emission is explained by the heterogeneous distribution of the europium dopants within the ceria nanocrystals coupled with the progressive diffusion of the europium ions from the surface to the inner ceria sites and the selective participation of the ceria host to the emission sensitization. Effects of the bulk-doping and impregnation with europium on the ceria host structure and optical properties are also discussed. We therefore propose and study a predator-prey model that describes mutual feedback via species shifts in both predator and prey, using a dynamic trait approach. Species compositions of the two trophic levels were described by mean functional traits-prey edibility and predator food-selectivity- and functional diversities by the variances. Altered edibility triggered shifts in food-selectivity so that consumers continuously respond to the present prey composition, and vice versa. This trait-mediated feedback mechanism resulted in a complex dynamic behavior with ongoing oscillations in the mean trait values, reflecting continuous reorganization of the trophic levels. The feedback was only possible if sufficient functional diversity was present in both trophic levels. Functional diversity was internally maintained on the prey level as no niche existed in our system, which was ideal under any composition of the predator level due to the trade-offs between edibility, growth and carrying capacity. The predators were only subject to one trade-off between food-selectivity and grazing ability and in the absence of immigration, one predator type became abundant, i.e., functional diversity declined to zero. In the lack of functional diversity the system showed the same dynamics as conventional models of predator-prey interactions ignoring the potential for shifts in species composition. This way, our study identified the crucial role of trade-offs and their shape in physiological and ecological traits for preserving diversity. JF - Molecular ecology N2 - Intraspecific brood parasitism (IBP) is a remarkable phenomenon by which parasitic females can increase their reproductive output by laying eggs in conspecific females' nests in addition to incubating eggs in their own nest. Kin selection could explain the tolerance, or even the selective advantage, of IBP, but different models of IBP based on game theory yield contradicting predictions. Our analyses of seven polymorphic autosomal microsatellites in two eider duck colonies indicate that relatedness between host and parasitizing females is significantly higher than the background relatedness within the colony. This result is unlikely to be a by-product of relatives nesting in close vicinity, as nest distance and genetic identity are not correlated. For eider females that had been ring-marked during the decades prior to our study, our analyses indicate that (i) the average age of parasitized females is higher than the age of nonparasitized females, (ii) the percentage of nests with alien eggs increases with the age of nesting females, (iii) the level of IBP increases with the host females' age, and (iv) the number of own eggs in the nest of parasitized females significantly decreases with age. IBP may allow those older females unable to produce as many eggs as they can incubate to gain indirect fitness without impairing their direct fitness: genetically related females specialize in their energy allocation, with young females producing more eggs than they can incubate and entrusting these to their older relatives. The gas adsorption and mercury intrusion methods are the most established techniques for quantification of specific surface areas, but unfortunately, dry materials are mandatory for their applicability. All porous materials that contain water and other solvents in their functional state must be dried before analysis. In this process, care has to be taken since the removal of solvent bears the risk of an incalculable alteration of the pore structure, especially for soft materials. In the present paper, we report on the use of small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) as an alternative analysis method for the investigation of the micro and mesopores within cellulose beads in their native, i.e., water-swollen state; in this context, they represent a typical soft material. We show that even gentle removal of the bound water reduces the specific surface area dramatically from 161 to 109 m(2) g(-1) in cellulose bead sample type MT50 and from 417 to 220 m(2) g(-1) in MT100. Simulation of the SAXS curves with a bimodal pore size distribution model reveals that the smallest pores with radii up to 10 nm are greatly affected by drying, whereas pores with sizes in the range of 10 to 70 nm are barely affected. The SAXS results were compared with Brunauer-Emmett-Teller results from nitrogen sorption measurements and with mercury intrusion experiments. While standard probabilistic sequence models provide efficient inference and learning techniques for sequential data, they typically cannot fully capture the relational complexity. On the other hand, statistical relational learning techniques are often too inefficient to cope with complex sequential data. In this paper, we introduce a simple model that occupies an intermediate position in this expressiveness/efficiency trade-off. It is based on CP-logic (Causal Probabilistic Logic), an expressive probabilistic logic for modeling causality. However, by specializing CP-logic to represent a probability distribution over sequences of relational state descriptions and employing a Markov assumption, inference and learning become more tractable and effective. Specifically, we show how to solve part of the inference and learning problems directly at the first-order level, while transforming the remaining part into the problem of computing all satisfying assignments for a Boolean formula in a binary decision diagram. We experimentally validate that the resulting technique is able to handle probabilistic relational domains with a substantial number of objects and relations. An increasing number of biological repositories is available on the web, incorporating thousands of biochemical reactions and genetic regulations. Systems Biology is a recent research trend in life science, which fosters a systemic view on biology. In Systems Biology one is interested in integrating the knowledge from all these different sources into models that capture the interaction of these entities. By studying these models one wants to understand the emerging properties of the whole system, such as robustness. However, both measurements as well as biological networks are prone to considerable incompleteness, heterogeneity and mutual inconsistency, which makes it highly non-trivial to draw biologically meaningful conclusions in an automated way. Therefore, we want to promote Answer Set Programming (ASP) as a tool for discrete modeling in Systems Biology. ASP is a declarative problem solving paradigm, in which a problem is encoded as a logic program such that its answer sets represent solutions to the problem. ASP has intrinsic features to cope with incompleteness, offers a rich modeling language and highly efficient solving technology. We present ASP solutions, for the analysis of genetic regulatory networks, determining consistency with observed measurements and identifying minimal causes for inconsistency. We extend this approach for computing minimal repairs on model and data that restore consistency. This method allows for predicting unobserved data even in case of inconsistency. Further, we present an ASP approach to metabolic network expansion. This approach exploits the easy characterization of reachability in ASP and its various reasoning methods, to explore the biosynthetic capabilities of metabolic reaction networks and generate hypotheses for extending the network. Finally, we present the BioASP library, a Python library which encapsulates our ASP solutions into the imperative programming paradigm. The library allows for an easy integration of ASP solution into system rich environments, as they exist in Systems Biology. N2 - In den letzten Jahren wurden große Fortschritte bei der Identifikation und Messung der Bausteine des Lebens gemacht. Die Verfügbarkeit von Hochdurchsatzverfahren in der Molekularbiology hat das Anwachsen unseres biologischen Wissens dramatisch beschleunigt. Durch die technische Fortschritte in Genomic, Proteomic und Metabolomic wurde die Konstruktion komplexer Modelle biologischer Systeme ermöglicht. Immer mehr biologische Datenbanken sind über das Internet verfügbar, sie enthalten tausende Daten biochemischer Reaktionen und genetischer Regulation. System Biologie ist ein junger Forschungszweig der Biologie, der versucht Biologische Systeme in ihrer Ganzheit zu erforschen. Dabei ist man daran interessiert möglichst viel Wissen aus den unterschiedlichsten Bereichen in ein Modell zu aggregieren, welches das Zusammenwirken der verschiedensten Komponenten nachbildet. Durch das Studium derartiger Modelle erhofft man sich ein Verständnis der aufbauenden Eigenschaften, wie zum Beispiel Robustheit, des Systems zu erlangen. Es stellt sich jedoch die Problematik, das sowohl die biologischen Modelle als auch die verfügbaren Messwerte, oft unvollständig, miteinander unvereinbar oder fehlerhaft sind. All dies macht es schwierig biologisch sinnvolle Schlussfolgerungen zu ziehen. Daher, möchten wir in dieser Arbeit Antwortmengen Programmierung (engl. Answer Set Programming; ASP) als Werkzeug zur diskreten Modellierung system biologischer Probleme vorschlagen. ASP verfügt über eingebaute Eigenschaften zum Umgang mit unvollständiger Information, eine reichhaltige Modellierungssprache und hocheffiziente Berechnungstechniken. Wir präsentieren ASP Lösungen zur Analyse von Netzwerken genetischer Regulierungen, zur Prüfung der Konsistenz mit gemessene Daten, und zur Identifikation von Gründen für Inkonsistenz. Diesen Ansatz erweitern wir um die Möglichkeit zur Berechnung minimaler Reparaturen an Modell und Daten, welche Konsistenz erzeugen. Mithilfe dieser Methode werden wir in die Lage versetzt, auch im Fall von Inkonsistenz, noch ungemessene Daten vorherzusagen. Weiterhin, präsentieren wir einen ASP Ansatz zur Analyse metabolischer Netzwerke. Bei diesem Ansatz, nutzen wir zum einen aus das sich Erreichbarkeit mit ASP leicht spezifizieren lässt und das ASP mehrere mächtige Methoden zur Schlussfolgerung bereitstellt, welche sich auch kombiniert lassen. Dadurch wird es möglich die Synthese Möglichkeiten eines Metabolischen Netzwerks zu erforschen und Hypothesen für Erweiterungen des metabolischen Netzwerks zu berechnen. Zu guter Letzt, präsentieren wir die BioASP Softwarebibliothek. Die BioASP-Bibliothek kapselt unsere ASP Lösungen in das imperative Programmierparadigma und vereinfacht eine Integration von ASP Lösungen in heterogene Betriebsumgebungen, wie sie in der System Biologie vorherrschen. For our discussion we have chosen a different point of departure: The fascination of science arises from its investigative nature, which allows us to relate to our world in novel ways. Accordingly, we should teach how to inquire nature, rather than giving canonical answers. What would be the practical consequences of such an approach, and what would the theoretical framework look like? These collected essays investigate a number of approaches toward this issue: phenomenological optics and its rejection of kinematic pictures, the distinction between mathematical reasoning and scientific evidence, the potential of non-conventional interpretations of science teaching, the meaning of "understanding" etc. This discussion merges into the current discourse about competence, while illustrating a kind of physics teaching that encourages "expeditions" into the realm of physics. RBP4 serum levels were analyzed in 110 subjects (50 with T2DM) using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Based on a cut-off estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) of 60 ml/min per 1.73 m(2) (calculated according the abbreviated MDRD formula which uses serum creatinine level, age and gender) and on the T2DM status, subjects were assigned to four subgroups: Group A - controls with an eGFR > 60 ml/min per 1.73 m(2), Group B - controls with an eGFR < 60 ml/min per 1.73 m(2), Group C- T2DM subjects with an eGFR>60 ml/min per 1.73 m(2), and Group D - T2DM subjects with an eGFR <60 ml/ mm per 1.73 m(2). In both the T2DM and control groups, RBP4 levels were higher in subjects with an eGFR < 60 ml/min per 1.73 m(2) than in subjects with an eGFR >60 ml/min per 1.73 m(2). However, the difference was only significant between the control groups (p <0.05). After adjusting for age, gender, BMI, eGFR and the presence of T2DM, eGFR, not T2DM, was associated with plasma RBP4 levels (p<0.05). These results suggest among Asians the eGFR, but not the presence of T2DM, is a major determinant of RBP4 serum levels. T1 - Absorption signatures of warm-hot gas at low redshift o vi JF - Monthly notices of the Royal Astronomical Society N2 - We investigate the origin and physical properties of O vi absorbers at low redshift (z = 0.25) using a subset of cosmological, hydrodynamical simulations from the OverWhelmingly Large Simulations (OWLS) project. Intervening O vi absorbers are believed to trace shock-heated gas in the warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM) and may thus play a key role in the search for the missing baryons in the present-day Universe. When compared to observations, the predicted distributions of the different O vi line parameters (column density, Doppler parameter, rest equivalent width W-r) from our simulations exhibit a lack of strong O vi absorbers, a discrepancy that has also been found by Oppenheimer & Dave. This suggests that physical processes on subgrid scales (e.g. turbulence) may strongly influence the observed properties of O vi systems. We find that the intervening O vi absorption arises mainly in highly metal enriched (10-1 < Z/Z(circle dot) less than or similar to 1) gas at typical overdensities of 1 < /<<>> less than or similar to 102. One-third of the O vi absorbers in our simulation are found to trace gas at temperatures T < 105 K, while the rest arises in gas at higher temperatures, most of them around T = 105.3 +/- 0.5 K. These temperatures are much higher than inferred by Oppenheimer & Dave, probably because that work did not take the suppression of metal-line cooling by the photoionizing background radiation into account. While the O vi resides in a similar region of (, T)-space as much of the shock-heated baryonic matter, the vast majority of this gas has a lower metal content and does not give rise to detectable O vi absorption. As a consequence of the patchy metal distribution, O vi absorbers in our simulations trace only a very small fraction of the cosmic baryons (< 2 per cent) and the cosmic metals. Instead, these systems presumably trace previously shock-heated, metal-rich material from galactic winds that is now mixing with the ambient gas and cooling. The common approach of comparing O vi and H i column densities to estimate the physical conditions in intervening absorbers from QSO observations may be misleading, as most of the H i (and most of the gas mass) is not physically connected with the high-metallicity patches that give rise to the O vi absorption. This work deals with the synthesis of (block co-)polymers, the creation of complex and stimuli-responsive aggregates by self-assembly, and the cross-linking of these structures. Also the higher-order self-assembly of the aggregates is investigated. The formation of poly-2-oxazoline based micelles in aqueous solution and their simultaneous functionalization and cross-linking using thiol-yne chemistry is e.g. presented. By introducing pH responsive thiols in the core of the micelles the influence of charged groups in the core of micelles on the entire structure can be studied. The charging of these groups leads to a swelling of the core and a decrease in the local concentration of the corona forming block (poly(2-ethyl-2-oxazoline)). This decrease in concentration yields a shift in the cloud point temperature to higher temperatures for this Type I thermoresponsive polymer. When the swelling of the core is prohibited, e.g. by the introduction of sufficient amounts of salt, this behavior disappears. Similar structures can be prepared using complex coacervate core micelles (C3Ms) built through the interaction of weakly acidic and basic polymer blocks. The advantage of these structures is that two different stabilizing blocks can be incorporated, which allows for more diverse and complex structures and behavior of the micelles. Using block copolymers with either a polyanionic or a polycationic block C3Ms could be created with a corona which contains two different soluble nonionic polymers, which either have a mixed corona or a Janus type corona, depending on the polymers that were chosen. Using NHS and EDC the micelles could easily be cross-linked by the formation of amide bonds in the core of the micelles. The higher-order self-assembly behavior of these core cross-linked complex coacervate core micelles (C5Ms) was studied. Due to the cross-linking the micelles are stabilized towards changes in pH and ionic strength, but polymer chains are also no longer able to rearrange. For C5Ms with a mixed corona likely network structures were formed upon the collapse of the thermoresponsive poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm), whereas for Janus type C5Ms well defined spherical aggregates of micelles could be obtained, depending on the pH of the solution. Furthermore it could be shown that Janus micelles can adsorb onto inorganic nanoparticles such as colloidal silica (through a selective interaction between PEO and the silica surface) or gold nanoparticles (by the binding of thiol end-groups). Asymmetric aggregates were also formed using the streptavidin-biotin binding motive. This is achieved by using three out of the four binding sites of streptavidin for the binding of one three-arm star polymer, end-functionalized with biotin groups. A homopolymer with one biotin end-group can be used to occupy the last position. This binding of two different polymers makes it possible to create asymmetric complexes. This phase separation is theoretically independent of the kind of polymer since the structure of the protein is the driving force, not the intrinsic phase separation between polymers. Besides Janus structures also specific cross-linking can be achieved by using other mixing ratios. N2 - In den letzten Jahrzehnten war die Herstellung von komplizierten Polymerstrukturen ein wichtiges Forschungsthema für Polymerchemiker. Diese Arbeit behandelt die Synthese von (Blockco-)Polymere, die Herstellung von komplexen und stimulus-responsiven Aggregaten (Mizellen) durch Selbstorganisation, sowie die Vernetzung dieser Strukturen. Auch die Anordnung dieser Mizellen zu Aggregaten mit höherer Ordnung wurde untersucht. Zum Beispiel wird die Bildung von Poly(2-oxazolin) basierter Mizellen in wässriger Lösung und die gleichzeitige Funktionalisierung und Vernetzung dieser Mizellen mittels Thiol-In-Chemie beschrieben. Durch die Einführung von pH-responsiven Gruppen in den Kern der Mizellen konnte der Einfluss von geladenen Gruppen im Kern auf das gesamte Aggregat untersucht werden. Das Einführen von Ladung führt zum Quellen des Mizellkerns und damit zu einer niedrigeren lokalen Konzentration von wasserlöslichem Poly(2-ethyl-2-oxazolin) (PEtOx). Diese niedrigere Konzentration ergibt eine Verschiebung des Trübungspunkt dieses Typ I thermoresponsiven Polymers zu höheren Temperaturen. Wenn die Ausdehnung des Kerns nicht erfolgt, z.B. in Anwesenheit einer hohen Salzkonzentration, findet dieser Effekt nicht statt. Ähnliche Strukturen können mithilfe von Mizellen mit komplexen Koazervatkern (English: Complex Coacervate Core Micelles, C3Ms) durch die Interaktion zwischen Polymeren mit negativ und positiv geladenen Blöcken hergestellt werden. Der Vorteil dieser Strukturen ist, dass zwei verschiedene stabilisierende Polymerblöcke in einem Aggregat vereint werden können, was zur Bildung einer Vielzahl noch komplizierterer Strukturen und zu mehr Responsivität führen kann. Mithilfe von Blockcopolymeren, bestehend aus jeweils einen polyionischen Block und einem neutralen Block (z.B. PEtOx, PEO oder poly(N-isopropylacrylamid) (PNIPAAm)), konnten C3Ms hergestellt werden, in denen zwei neutrale Polymere vereint wurden. Es konnte gezeigt werden, dass diese Polymere sowohl gemischt als auch phasensepariert vorliegen können (letzteres ergibt Janus Mizellen), abhängig welche Polymere gewählt werden. Durch Vernetzung im Kern konnten die Mizellen stabilisiert und fixiert werden (C5Ms). Die Selbstanordnung dieser vernetzten Mizellen zu größeren Aggregaten wurde untersucht. Wenn eine Lösung mit vernetzten Mizellen über den Trübungspunkt von PNIPAAm erhitzt wurde, bildeten sich Netzwerke aus Mizellen mit einer gemischten Korona, während Janus Mizellen sich zu wohldefinierten Aggregaten höherer Ordnung anordneten. Weiterhin konnte gezeigt werden, dass Janus Mizellen sich auf der Oberfläche von anorganischen Nanopartikeln anlagern können; z.B. durch die selektive Wechselwirkung zwischen PEO und Silica oder durch die Adsorption von Thiolgruppen auf Gold-Nanopartikeln. Asymmetrische Aggregate konnten auch mithilfe des Streptavidin-Biotin Komplexes erhalten werden. Durch das Binden der Biotin-Endgruppen eines dreiarmigen Sternpolymeren an eine Streptavidin-Einheit und anschließende Belegung der verbliebenen Bindungsstelle mit der Biotin-gruppe eines Homopolymers, können sehr spezifisch zwei verschiedene Polymere in einem Janus Aggregat vereint werden. Auch die Vernetzung des Streptavidins kann erzielt werden, indem andere Mischverhältnisse gewählt werden. The ability to efficiently process rapid changes in auditory information is important for decoding speech and thereby crucial during language acquisition. Investigating functional networks of speech perception in infancy might elucidate neuronal ensembles supporting perceptual abilities that gate language acquisition. Interhemispheric specializations for language have been demonstrated in infants. How these asymmetries are shaped by basic temporal acoustic properties is under debate. We recently provided evidence that newborns process non-linguistic sounds sharing temporal features with language in a differential and lateralized fashion. The present study used the same material while measuring brain responses of 6 and 3 month old infants using simultaneous recordings of electroencephalography (EEG) and near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). NIRS reveals that the lateralization observed in newborns remains constant over the first months of life. While fast acoustic modulations elicit bilateral neuronal activations, slow modulations lead to right-lateralized responses. Additionally, auditory-evoked potentials and oscillatory EEG responses show differential responses for fast and slow modulations indicating a sensitivity for temporal acoustic variations. Oscillatory responses reveal an effect of development, that is, 6 but not 3 month old infants show stronger theta-band desynchronization for slowly modulated sounds. Whether this developmental effect is due to increasing fine-grained perception for spectrotemporal sounds in general remains speculative. Our findings support the notion that a more general specialization for acoustic properties can be considered the basis for lateralization of speech perception. Presently, polymers which can undergo a physical change when heat is applied at a certain temperature (cloud point) in water are well-studied for this property in areas of separation chemistry, gene and drug delivery and as surface modifiers. One example of such a polymer is the poly (N-isopropylacrylamide) PNIPAAM, where it is dissolved well in water below 32 oC, while by increasing the temperature further leads to its precipitation. In this work, an alternative polymer poly (2-(2-methoxy ethoxy)ethyl methacrylate-co- oligo(ethylene glycol) methacrylate) (P(MEO2MA-co-OEGMA)) is studied due to its biocompatibility and the ability to vary its cloud points in water. When a layer of temperature responsive polymer was attached to a single continuous porous piece of silica-based material known as a monolith, the thermoresponsive characteristic was transferred to the column surfaces. The hybrid material was demonstrated to act as a simple temperature ‘switch’ in the separation of a mixture of five steroids under water. Different analytes were observed to be separated under varying column temperatures. Furthermore, more complex biochemical compounds such as proteins were also tested for separation. The importance of this work is attributed to separation processes utilizing environmentally friendly conditions, since harsh chemical environments conventionally used to resolve biocompounds could cause their biological activities to be rendered inactive. N2 - Polymere, welche empfindlich gegenüber externen physikalischen, chemischen und elektrischen Einflüssen sind, werden „intelligente Materialien“ genannt. Diese werden weitverbreitet in medizinischen und technischen Anwendungen eingesetzt. Auf diesem Gebiet ausführlich erforschte Materialien sind Polymere, welche durch Hitze bei einer bestimmten Temperatur (Trübungspunkt) eine physikalische Veränderung eingehen können, genannt thermoresponsive Polymere. Eingesetzt werden diese z.B. in chromatographischen Trennverfahren, in Gen- und Wirkstofftransport Vorgängen und zur Oberflächenmodifikation. Ein Beispiel für so ein Polymer ist das poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) PNIPAAM, welches unter 32 °C in Wasser gelöst vorliegt und mit Erhöhung der Temperatur als Niederschlag ausfällt. In dieser Arbeit wurde ein alternatives Polymer, das poly(2-(2-methoxyethoxy)ethylmethacrylate-co-oligo(ethyleneglycol) methacrylate) (P(MEO2MA-co-OEGMA)), untersucht, in Bezug auf Biokompatibilität und der Änderung des Trübungspunktes in Wasser. Wenn eine Schicht eines temperaturempfindlichen Polymers auf einen Monolithen (einteiliger, poröser und auf Silika-basierendes Material) aufgebracht wird, werden die thermoresponsiven Eigenschaften auf die Oberfläche dieses Monolithen übertragen. Der Monolith dient hier als Säule in einer HPLC-Anlage. Es wurde gezeigt, dass das Hybrid-Material als einfacher „Temperaturschalter“ in der Trennung von fünf verschiedenen Steroiden in Wasser agieren kann. Untersucht wurde die Separation verschiedener Analyten mit dem Variieren der Säulentemperatur. Zusätzlich wurden mehr komplexe biochemische Stoffe, wie Proteine, getestet. Die Bedeutung dieser Arbeit ist zurückzuführen auf Separationsprozesse, welche umweltfreundlichen Bedingungen nutzen, da die rauen chemischen Bedingungen in konventionellen Separationsprozessen die biologische Inaktivität der Verbindungen zur Folge haben können. Der zweite Teil der Arbeit beschäftigte sich mit der Entwicklung eines alternativen Trägermaterials als Ersatz zu den Silika-basierende Trennungssäulen. Kohlenstoffmaterialien sind aufgrund ihrer ausgezeichneten mechanischen Härte und chemischen Stabilität eine vielversprechend Alternative. Die Synthese von Kohlenstoffkugeln als Trägermaterial kann als „grüner“ Prozess in meiner Arbeit angesehen werden, da milde Synthesebedingungen in purem Wasser verwendet wurden. Die Leistungsfähigkeit des Materials wurde mit einer Serie von Separationsreaktionen gezeigt. First the PTFE films were patterned and then fusion-bonded with the FEP films. The laminates were subjected to either corona or contact charging in order to obtain the desired piezoelectricity. The build-up of the "macro-dipoles" in the laminated films was studied by recording the electric hysteresis loops. The resulting electro-mechanical properties were investigated by means of dielectric resonance spectroscopy (DRS) and direct measurements of the stress-strain relationship. Moreover, the thermal stability of the piezoelectric d (33) coefficient was investigated at elevated temperatures and via thermally stimulated discharge (TSD) current measurements in short circuit. For 150 mu m thick laminated films, consisting of one 25 mu m thick PTFE layer, two 12.5 mu m thick FEP layers, and a void of 100 mu m height, the critical voltage necessary for the build-up of the "macro-dipoles" in the inner voids was approximately 1400 V, which agrees with the value calculated from the Paschen Law. A quasi-static piezoelectric d (33) coefficient up to 300 pC/N was observed after corona charging. The mechanical properties of the film systems are highly anisotropic. At room temperature, the Young's moduli of the laminated film system are around 0.37 MPa in the thickness direction and 274 MPa in the lateral direction, respectively. Using these values, the theoretical shape anisotropy ratio of the void was calculated, which agrees well with experimental observation. Compared with films that do not exhibit structural regularity, the laminates showed improved thermal stability of the d (33) coefficients. The thermal stability of d (33) can be further improved by pre-aging. E.g., the reduction of the d (33) value in the sample pre-aged at 150A degrees C for 5 h was less than 5% after annealing for 30 h at a temperature of 90A degrees C. Our result demonstrates that merely via white-noise-based coupling lag synchronization could be achieved between the coupled systems (chaotic or not). And it is also demonstrated that a conventional lag synchronous regime can be enhanced by white noise. Sufficient conditions are further proved mathematically for noise-inducing and noise-enhancing lag synchronization, respectively. Additionally, the influence of parameter mismatch on the proposed lag synchronous regime is studied, by which we announce the robustness and validity of the new strategy. Two numerical examples are provided to illustrate the validity and some possible applications of the theoretical result. A robust annelid phylogeny would shape our understanding of animal body-plan evolution and shed light on the bilaterian ground pattern. Traditionally, Annelida has been split into two major groups: Clitellata (earthworms and leeches) and polychaetes (bristle worms), but recent evidence suggests that other taxa that were once considered to be separate phyla (Sipuncula, Echiura and Siboglinidae (also known as Pogonophora)) should be included in Annelida(1-4). However, the deep-level evolutionary relationships of Annelida are still poorly understood, and a robust reconstruction of annelid evolutionary history is needed. Here we show that phylogenomic analyses of 34 annelid taxa, using 47,953 amino acid positions, recovered a well-supported phylogeny with strong support for major splits. Our results recover chaetopterids, myzostomids and sipunculids in the basal part of the tree, although the position of Myzostomida remains uncertain owing to its long branch. The remaining taxa are split into two clades: Errantia (which includes the model annelid Platynereis), and Sedentaria (which includes Clitellata). Ancestral character trait reconstructions indicate that these clades show adaptation to either an errant or a sedentary lifestyle, with alteration of accompanying morphological traits such as peristaltic movement, parapodia and sensory perception. Finally, life history characters in Annelida seem to be phylogenetically informative. This makes simulations of complex source geometries expensive, requiring separate evaluations of many point dipole fields, and thus limits the practical applicability of such schemes for simulating and interpreting field data. We present a novel 2.5D CSEM modeling scheme that overcomes this limitation and permits efficient simulations of sources with general shape and orientation by evaluating fields for the entire source at once. We accommodate general sources by using a secondary field approach, in which primary fields are computed for the general source and a 1D background conductivity model. To carry out the required Fourier transforms between space and wavenumber domain using the same fast cosine and sine transform filters as in conventional algorithms, we split the primary and secondary fields into their symmetric and antisymmetric parts. For complex 3D source geometries, this approach is significantly more efficient than previous 2.5D algorithms. Our finite-difference algorithm also includes novel approaches for divergence correction at low frequencies and EM field interpolation across conductivity discontinuities. We describe the modeling scheme and demonstrate its accuracy and efficiency by comparisons of 2.5D-simulated data with 1D and 3D results. Nevertheless, simulations of CSEM data often approximate these sources as point dipoles. Although this is justified for sufficiently large source-receiver distances, many real surveys include frequencies and distances at which the dipole approximation is inaccurate. For 1D layered media, electromagnetic (EM) fields for point dipole sources can be computed using well-known quasi-analytical solutions and fields for sources of finite length can be synthesized by superposing point dipole fields. However, the calculation of numerous point dipole fields is computationally expensive, requiring a large number of numerical integral evaluations. We combine a more efficient representation of finite-length sources in terms of components related to the wire and its end points with very general expressions for EM fields in 1D layered media. We thus obtain a formulation that requires fewer numerical integrations than the superposition of dipole fields, permits source and receiver placement at any depth within the layer stack and can also easily be integrated into 3D modelling algorithms. Complex source geometries, such as wires bent due to surface obstructions, can be simulated by segmenting the wire and computing the responses for each segment separately. We first describe our finite-length wire expressions and then present 1D and 3D examples of EM fields due to finite-length sources for typical land and marine survey geometries and discuss differences to point dipole fields. Sensitivity calculations are also a principal building block of EM inversion schemes. Sensitivities are formally given by the derivatives of the EM field components with respect to conductivity. For horizontally layered media, these derivatives can be evaluated analytically, offering advantages in computational efficiency and accuracy over numerical evaluation. We present a complete set of explicit analytic expressions for the EM field sensitivities in 1-D VTI-anisotropic media for horizontal and vertical electric and magnetic dipole sources, and also for finite horizontal electric sources. Since our derivations are based on a formulation for EM fields that is quite general in allowing for sources and receivers at any depth, our sensitivity expressions exhibit the same generality. We verify our expressions by comparison to numerical solutions, and finally present application examples that demonstrate the utility and versatility of these expressions for CSEM feasibility studies.
