TY - JOUR A1 - Blaum, Niels A1 - Engeman, Richard M. A1 - Wasiolka, Bernd A1 - Rossmanith, Eva T1 - Indexing small mammalian carnivores in the southern Kalahari, South Africa N2 - Monitoring animal populations in changing environments is crucial to wildlife conservation and management, but restrictions in resources are a recurring problem for wildlife managers and researchers throughout Africa. Land-use- induced shrub encroachment in Kalahari savannah rangelands has led to fragmentation of the landscape. Mammalian carnivores are particularly vulnerable to local extinction in fragmented landscapes, but their low numbers and their often nocturnal and secretive habits make them difficult to monitor. In this study, we tested the applicability of a passive tracking method and compared two measurement methods and index calculations for monitoring small carnivores across a grazing gradient in the southern Kalahari. During the four years of monitoring in a five-year period, we used the knowledge of indigenous Khoisan Bushmen for the identification of carnivore tracks on 640 sand transects (5 m x 250 m). Our results showed that this simple and inexpensive observation method enabled detailed monitoring of 10 small carnivore species across the grazing gradient. A binary index calculated an index based on presence/absence of a species' tracks on each transect, whereas the track intrusion index used the number of track intrusions to each transect for each species in its calculations. For less common species, the two indices were similar in trend and magnitude, because the number of intrusions to each transect was typically 1 or 0. Usually, the two indices showed relatively strong correlations. However, species with patchy distributions of higher numbers presented difficulties for the binary index to monitor trends, but not for the track intrusion index. The majority of the recorded macromycetes were decomposers of dead stems and logs of different trees and shrubs, especially of the dominating tree species Fagus orientalis and Abies nordmanniana. Bondarzewia montana, Hericium alpestre and Phellinus hartigii are typical colonisers of old Abies trunks and therefore of special interest. They were recorded several times, especially in the primeval forests of the excursion area. Some of the collected taxa like Daldinia petriniae, Hypoxylon cercidicola, H. liviae, Ophiostoma polyporicola, Pezoloma marchantiae, Ramsbottomia macracantha, Symphyosyria angelicae, Auriporia aurulenta, Flagelloscypha pilatii, Hymenochaete carpatica, Marasmius cf. rhododendrorum and Pellidiscus pallidus are discussed in detail. Some of the recorded taxa are probably new for the western Caucasus and in some cases also for Russia. Fibronectin, collagen I, bovine serum albumin and laminin were used to coat NUNC and COSTAR cell culture plates. Cell number and antibody concentration in culture fluids were quantified as indicators for cell viability, proliferation and productivity. Adhesive behaviour, morphology, expression of surface receptors of hybridoma cells and the presence of tyrosine-phosphorylated proteins in cell lysates were characterized by cell adhesion experiments, microscopy, flow cytometry and Western Blot analysis. It was shown that coatings with fibronectin (0.2 ;g/ml) lead to a substantial improvement of cell growth by 50-70% and an increase of monoclonal antibody production by 100-120%. Collagen I coatings showed an improvement in cell growth by 30-70% and by 60% for the production of monoclonal antibodies. Coatings with BSA and laminin had minor effects on these parameters. It was found that the hybridoma cell lines used in this study did not express the ;2-chain of the ;2;1-integrin, which is responsible for binding to collagen and laminin. However, the presence of ;1- integrin on the cell surface was shown, which should enable hybridoma cells to bind fibronectin. We propose, therefore, that fibronectin adsorption to cell culture materials may be a promising approach to enhance the production of monoclonal antibodies by cultivated hybridoma cells. It is the period where children learn to persist in a sitting posture for a longer time and to use furniture like chairs or other body supporting systems. The growing body shows a special sensitivity for the manifestation of inappropriate postures. In this study the development of body measurements and sitting behaviour of preschool age children is investigated as a precondition for an optimal adjustment of seats and desks to the growing body. Accordingly to the instructions of Knußmann (1988) and Jürgens (1988) 6 body measurements were taken from 122 German children aged 3 to 7 years from Potsdam, Province Brandenburg. Additionally, every child was videotaped for 10 minutes while crayoning in a sitting position of its own choice using a chair and a desk. To analyse the tapes, the software Noldus Observer was used and examined, picture by picture, to define the different types of sitting postures as well as the duration of persistence in a posture and the number of changes of postures. The used chairs and desks were also measured. Furthermore, the data of the furniture guideline DIN ISO 5970 (DIN, 1981), which regulates the dimensions of furniture for sitting in educational institutions, were compared with the results of the body measurements and with the dimensions of the furniture used by the children. In a first application, we analyze the effects of sustainable and intensive grazing land management in the Jordan River region. For this purpose, we adapt and use the regional version of the spatially explicit modeling framework LandSHIFT. Our simulation experiments indicate that the modeled feedback mechanism has a strong effect on the spatial extent of grazing land. Consequently, the results of our study underline that the inclusion of such feedback mechanisms in land- use models can help to represent and analyze the complex interactions between humans and the environment in a more differentiated and realistic way, but they also identify the demand for more detailed empirical data on grazing land degradation in order to further improve the explanatory power of the model. In anaerobic solutions, reversible oxidation and reduction is obtained with a formal potential between -0.292 and - 0.305 V vs Ag/AgCl 1 M KCl depending on the preparation of the biosensor. In air-saturated solution, bio-electrocatalytic reduction currents can be obtained with the CYP2B4-modified electrode on addition of typical substrates such as aminopyrine and benzphetamine. T1 - Variation in nitrogen deposition and available soil nitrogen in a forest? Grassland ecotone in Canada N2 - Regional variation in nitrogen (N) deposition increases plant productivity and decreases species diversity, but landscape- or local -scale influences on N deposition are less well-known. Using ion-exchange resin, we measured variation of N deposition and soil N availability within Elk Island National Park in the ecotone between grassland and boreal forest in western Canada. The park receives regionally high amounts of atmospheric N deposition (22 kg ha(-1) yr(- 1)). N deposition was on average higher ton clay-rich luvisols than on brunisols, and areas burned 1-15 years previously received more atmospheric N than unburned sites. We suggest that the effects of previous fires and soil type on deposition rate act through differences in canopy structure. The magnitude of these effects varied with the presence of ungulate grazers (bison, moose, elk) and vegetation type (forest, shrubland, grassland). Available soil N (ammonium and nitrate) was higher in burned than unburned sites in the absence of grazing, suggesting an effect of deposition. On grazed sites, differences between fire treatments were small, presumably because the removal of biomass by grazers reduced the effect of fire. Aspen invades native grassland in this region, and our results suggest that fire without grazing might reinforce the expansion of forest into grassland facilitated by N deposition Y1 - 2005 UR - http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s10980-004-2264-x SN - 0921-2973 ER - TY - THES A1 - Schmitz, Jennifer T1 - Die Funktion von Ubiquitin- und E1-ähnlichen Proteinen in der Molybdäncofaktor-Biosynthese und in Protein-Konjugations-Systemen Y1 - 2007 CY - Potsdam ER - TY - THES A1 - Nagel, Thomas T1 - Funktionelle Immobilisierung von Proteinen in dünnen elektropolymerisierten Schichten von Cumarin- Derivaten : Charakterisierung und biosensorische Anwendungen Y1 - 2008 CY - Potsdam ER - TY - JOUR A1 - Apio, Ann A1 - Plath, Martin A1 - Wronski, Torsten T1 - Localised defecation sites : a tactic to avoid re-infection by gastro-intestinal tract parasites in bushbuck, Tragelaphus scriptus? In a population of bushbuck in Queen Elizabeth National Park, Uganda, seven radio-collared individuals were observed. We recorded feeding behaviour inside and outside LDS. Furthermore, pasture contamination with gastro-intestinal tract parasites inside and outside LDS was examined. There were significant differences between the expected and the observed feeding rates inside LDS, but, contrary to our prediction, the bushbuck increased their feeding rate inside LDS. There was no significant difference in the parasite contamination of pastures inside and outside LDS. We discuss the hypothesis that LDS mainly serve a social function in bushbuck communities, whereas parasite avoidance seems to play a minor or no role Y1 - 2006 UR - http://www.springerlink.com/content/105357 U6 - https://doi.org/10.1007/s10164-005-0166-2 SN - 0289-0771 ER - TY - JOUR A1 - Fischer, Markus A1 - Winkler, Eckart A1 - Schmid, Bernhard T1 - Modelling the competitiveness of clonal plants by complementary analytical and simulation approaches Y1 - 1999 ER - TY - JOUR A1 - Grimm, Volker A1 - Revilla, Eloy A1 - Groeneveld, Jürgen A1 - Kramer-Schadt, Stephanie A1 - Schwager, Monika A1 - Tews, Jörg A1 - Wichmann, Matthias A1 - Jeltsch, Florian T1 - Importance of buffer mechanisms for population viability analysis Y1 - 2005 ER - TY - GEN A1 - Gzik, Axel T1 - Gefäßversuche zur Beurteilung von Korrelation zwischen Standortfaktoren und vitalitätsbestimmenden Stoffwechselparametern in charakteristischen Pflanzenarten typischer Feuchtwiesengesellschaften.
