La chiave di lettura è un unicum con una marcata impronta ideologica che ne determina prima la fortuna e poi l'isolamento. Al Gattopardo nella Germania Est Bernardina Rago dà per la prima volta voce.

N2  - The present study approaches the Spanish postposed constructions creo Ø and creo yo ‘[p], [I] think’ from a cognitive-constructionist perspective. It is argued that both constructions are to be distinguished from one another because creo Ø has a subjective function, while in creo yo, it is the intersubjective dimension that is particularly prominent. The present investigation takes both a qualitative and a quantitative perspective. With regard to the latter, the problem of quantitative representativity is addressed. The discussion posed the question of how empirical research can feed back into theory, more precisely, into the framework of Cognitive Construction Grammar. The data to be analyzed here are retrieved from the corpora Corpus de Referencia del Español Actual and Corpus del Español.

O ser humano não apenas empregou técnicas cada vez mais sofisticadas para a violência, como também transmitiu, através dos séculos, técnicas de conservação e uso de seu saberconviver. Nesse sentido móvel da história, e em consonância com as literaturas do mundo, a partir de suas diversas origens, é possível dizer que existe um “Homo migrans” desde que existe o “Homo sapiens”. Assim, é possível afirmar que as ideias territoriais ou territorializantes com proveniência histórico-espacial permitem, vez ou outra, reconhecer seus esforços para filtrar e isolar a dimensão histórico-móvel e vetorial da história como narrativa, para tentar construir, com a ajuda de ideias estáticas, novos lugares da promessa ou da perda, da abundância ou da queda.

N2  - Directive Speech Acts (dsas) are a major feature of historical pragmatics, specifically in research on historical (im)politeness. However, for Classical French, there is a lack of research on related phenomena. In our contribution, we present two recently constructed corpora covering the period of Classical French, sermo and apwcf. We present these corpora in terms of their genre characteristics on a communicative-functional and socio-pragmatic level. Based on the observation that, both in sermo and apwcf, dsas frequently occur together with terms of address, we analyse and manually code a sample based on this co-occurrence, and we compare the results with regard to special features in the individual corpora. The emerging patterns show a clear correspondence between socio-pragmatic factors and the linguistic means used to realise dsas. We propose that these results can be interpreted as signs of an underlying "grammar of authority".

Special Issus: Early Modern 'New Sciences': Inquiries into Ibn Khaldun and Giambattista Vico
N2  - In the nineteenth century, the reception of Giambattista Vico’s writings came along with nationalist interpretations of his Scienza Nuova as an ‘Italian Science’. This tendency was based upon an increased examination of the role that the philosopher Pythagoras and his Italian school of Croton played in Vico’s hierarchical conception of the ancient Greek and Italian civilizations. Writers, archaeologists and historians used the New Science as a metonymic reference work for their own nationalist concepts by updating the Pythagorean myth in accordance with relevant narratives of exclusive genealogies concerning an ancient Italian wisdom. These narratives follow tendencies in Vico’s own writings that were quoted strategically and mixed with further interpretations of the Scienza Nuova as reliable testimonial for a glorious Italian history. A theological poet characterized by deeper insight into the secrets of nature and some parts of the divine providence, Pythagoras gains his special position in Vico’s general conception of knowledge.

Als politische Institution, in der es nur sprachliche und kulturelle Minderheiten gibt und geben wird, folgt die Europäische Union einer plurilinguistischen Orientierung, womit ein erheblicher Bedarf an Sprach- und Kulturkenntnissen (und deren Erwerb) verbunden ist. Grosso modo umfasst die EU drei große indoeuropäische Sprachfamilien: die romanische, slawische und germanische. Innerhalb jeder dieser Sprachgruppen gibt es etymologisch bedingte Gemeinsamkeiten, die v.a. die Phonologie, Morphologie, Lexik und Syntax betreffen. Die Kenntnis dieser synchron erkennbaren gemeinsamen Elemente bzw. ihrer einzelsprachlich äquivalenten Varianten ermöglicht transferhaftes Lernen im Sinne der Interkomprehension in Sprachfamilien. Grundlage der romanischen Interkomprehension ist das „Vulgärlatein“, dessen Spezifik v.a. gegenüber den heutigen Sprachen der Romania herausgestellt wird. Den lerntheoretischen Hintergrund der Interkomprehension bilden die Interlanguage-Hypothese, die Annahme mentaler Netzwerke sowie die verschiedenen Verarbeitungsstadien des interkomprehensiven Spracherwerbs: Spontangrammatik, Mehrsprachenspeicher und didaktischer Monitor. Zudem wird die Rolle mutter- und fremdsprachlicher Transferbasen sowie die der einzelnen Transferdomänen (Form, Inhalt, Funktion, Pragmatik, Didaktik) erläutert. Schwerpunkte der vorliegenden Arbeit bilden die Motivation und die einzelnen Verarbeitungsstadien beim interkomprehensiven Lesen, wobei dem sprachlichen Vorwissen der Lesenden besondere Bedeutung zukommt. Der vorgeschlagene Leitfaden für das erschließende Lesen umfasst drei Gesamtlektüren und berücksichtigt dabei sowohl sprachsystematische als auch textlinguistische Kriterien. Zur Illustration dient ein aktueller Text in Nissart, der auch verschiedenen Probanden vorgelegt wurde. Die Analyse ergab, dass ein globales Textverständnis durch die Kenntnis einer romanischen Sprache spontan gegeben ist, dieses Globalverständnis im Einzelnen jedoch deutlich differieren kann. Am Ende der Arbeit werden mit der Darstellung der strukturellen Besonderheiten des Rumänischen die Grenzen interkomprehensiven Leseverständnisses gezeigt, aber auch der erleichterte Einstieg in die Sprachproduktion dargelegt.
N2  - Plurilinguism or “English only”? As a political institution consisting of linguistic and cultural minorities only, the European Union prefers plurilinguism creating a significant need for specific cultural and language knowledge (and acquisition). The EU is divided into three big Indoeuropean language families: the Romance, the Slavic and the German. Within each of them there are etymological based equivalences concerning e.g. phonological, morphological, lexical and syntactic characteristics. Knowing these synchronic discernible elements and their specific equivalences enables language acquisition by transfer-based learning. The basis of Romance intercomprehension is “Vulgarlatin”, whose characteristics are compared to those of the modern romance languages. The theoretical background of intercomprehension is formed by the Interlanguage-Hypothesis, concepts of mental networks and several processes of intercomprehensive language-acquisition: spontaneous grammar, multilingual memory and didactic monitor. The role of transfer-bases (mother-tongue and foreign language(s)) and of each one of the transfer-domains (form, content, function, pragmatic, didactic) is explained. The focus in this paper is on motivation and the specific steps of the intercomprehensive reading process, whereby special emphasis is placed on the reader´s previous knowledge. The suggested guide to “reading by intellectual guessing” encompasses three readings and takes into consideration not only criteria of the language-system, but also those of textual linguistics. To illustrate the whole process, a contemporary text in Nissart is analysed. This text also was analysed by several test-persons. Result: By knowing one romance language a spontaneous global comprehension of another one is possible, but there can be significant differences in the details of this global comprehension. The paper concludes by using the structural characteristics of Romanian to illustrate the limits of spontaneous intercomprehensive reading comprehension on the one hand, but the facilitation of language production on the other.

N2  - Die Tötung Osama bin Ladens durch ein US-Sonderkommando Anfang Mai 2011, wenige Monate vor dem zehnten Jahrestag der verheerenden Terroranschläge vom 11. September, erhielt ein großes Maß an medialer Aufmerksamkeit. Der Tod des Mannes, der für die Terroranschläge verantwortlich gemacht wurde, führte zu einer erneuten Auseinandersetzung mit diesem Ereignis und dessen individuellen und globalen Folgen. Ausgangspunkt der Untersuchung dieses Pressediskurses ist die Annahme, dass eine solche gedankliche und sprachliche Auseinandersetzung, wie sie in der Presse kreiert und reflektiert wird, insbesondere auch von Metaphern bestimmt wird. Die Untersuchung stützt sich auf die Erkenntnisse kognitiver Metapherntheorien. Sie orientiert sich aber vor allem auch an jüngeren Untersuchungen innerhalb der Metaphernforschung, die speziell die sprachliche Dimension der Metapher wieder mehr in den Vordergrund rücken. Der Arbeit liegt daher ein multidimensionales Verständnis der Metapher zugrunde. Die kognitive Funktion der Metapher ermöglicht das Begreifbarmachen abstrakter bzw. unbekannter Phänomene. Metaphern können aber zugleich auch Indikatoren für die bewusste wie auch unbewusste Bewertung von Ereignissen, Handlungen und Personen sein. Die Untersuchung verfolgt einen vergleichenden Ansatz, der auf der Grundlage eines Arbeitskorpus aus US-amerikanischen und französischen Pressetexten zur Tötung bin Ladens den Metapherngebrauch in den beiden Ländern anhand ausgewählter Themenaspekte gegenüberstellt. Ziel der Untersuchung ist es, Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede zwischen den beiden Landespressen zu identifizieren und diesbezüglich mögliche Interpretationen anzugeben. Dabei wird der Sprachgebrauch im Terror-Diskurs nach 9/11 einer kritischen Betrachtung unterzogen, um ein Bewusstsein für möglicherweise unbewusste metaphorische Konzeptualisierungen zu entwickeln. Im Vergleich des Metapherngebrauchs in der US-amerikanischen und französischen Presse werden deutliche Gemeinsamkeiten festgestellt. Die analysierten Unterschiede sind häufig sprachlich bedingt. Teilweise können sie aber auch im Hinblick auf Differenzen in der Positionierung der beiden Länder in Bezug auf bin Ladens Tötung interpretiert werden. Die weitgehende Übereinstimmung in den Metaphern lässt sich zum einen auf die Nähe der beiden Sprachen, zum anderen auf den ähnlichen politischen Hintergrund der beiden westlichen Länder zurückführen. Darüber hinaus wird die Hypothese aufgestellt, dass der verstärkt stattfindende internationale Austausch von Nachrichten, vor allem über Presseagenturen, auch zunehmend zu einer Globalisierung auf dem Gebiet der Metapher führt.
N2  - The killing of Osama bin Laden by a US special task force in early May 2011, only a few months before the tenth anniversary of the devastating terror attacks of September 11, received a great deal of media attention. The death of the man who had been made responsible for the terror attacks triggered a fresh discussion of the events of 9/11 and both the individual and global consequences thereof. The starting point for an analysis of the relevant press discourse lies in the assumption that such a discussion taking place in language and thought, as it is created and reflected by the press, is to a great extent also determined by metaphors. The analysis draws on the insights of cognitive metaphor theories. It is, however, also primarily influenced by recent studies within metaphor research that aim to bring the linguistic dimension of metaphors back to the forefront. Therefore, a multidimensional understanding of metaphors forms the basis of the present study. The cognitive function of metaphors allows us to grasp abstract or unknown phenomena. Yet metaphors may further serve as indicators of conscious as well as unconscious evaluations of events, acts and people. The analysis follows a comparative approach: A study corpus of US and French press texts on the subject of bin Laden’s killing is analyzed with regard to selected aspects of the topic in order to compare the use of metaphors in the two countries. The aim of the study is to identify similarities and differences in the two countries’ press coverage and give possible interpretations for the results obtained. At the same time, the language used in the post-9/11 terror discourse is subjected to a critical examination in order to provide an understanding of metaphorical conceptualizations that are possibly unknown. In the comparison of metaphor use by the US and the French press clear similarities can be observed. The dissimilarities are often due to differences between the two languages. In some cases, however, they may be interpreted as the result of differences in the positions of the two countries on the subject of bin Laden’s killing. The extensive consistency in metaphor usage can be attributed to the closeness of the two languages as well as to the comparable political background of the two Western countries. Furthermore, it is hypothesized that the growing international exchange of news, especially via press agencies, may increasingly also lead to globalization in the field of metaphor.

Diskutiert wird die wissenschaftliche Bedeutung der graphischen und visuellen Dimension des Humboldt’schen Archivs, die durch die digitale Aufbereitung des Materials Forscher:innen weltweit miteinander verbindet und neue Forschungskonzepte eröffnet.

And how can we explain the »Kehlmann phenomenon« from a greater distance?
