N2  - Dieser Beitrag zeigt anhand von Canettis autobiographischem Werk Aspekte des interreligiösen Zusammenlebens in Wien anfangs des 20. Jahrhunderts. Canetti beschreibt in seiner mehrbändigen Autobiographie den Stolz der Sepharden auf ihre Abstammung und Abgrenzungsstrategien gegenüber anderen Gruppen. Wien wird bei Canetti als Schwelle zu einer anderen Welt dargestellt, das in Opposition zu einer traditionellrückständischen Heimat in Bulgarien steht. Symbolhaft steht die Stadt für Fortschritt und bildet einen Teil von Canettis neuem Leben, in dem das Judenspanische als Sprache des Ausdrucks und der Zugehörigkeit vom Deutschen abgelöst wird. Gleichzeitig wird Wien als Ort inszeniert, wo durch das Zusammentreffen einer Vielfalt der Kulturen Integration innerhalb eines intellektuellen Umfelds größere Bedeutung erhält. Die Auswirkungen pluralistischer Einflüsse innerhalb einer multikulturellen Gesellschaft auf Selbst- und Fremdbilder stehen im Fokus des Artikels.
N2  - This paper offers insights into aspects of the multireligious society in Vienna at the beginning of the 20th century, described by Elias Canetti in his autobiography. In the three tomes of his autobiography, the author shows the pride of Sephardic Jews concerning their descendance and indicates strategies of dissociation from other groups. From the perspective of the Bulgarian Sephardic Jews, Vienna fills the position of a threshold to a modern, progressive world, in opposition to the traditional life in Bulgaria. The city turns into the symbol of progress and is plugged into Canetti’s „new“ life, in which he uses the German language to express himself. Besides, the choice of language marks Canetti‘s affiliation to an intellectual sphere, where the diversity of cultures and the analysis or the integration of the alien are important driving forces. The focus of this paper lies on the results of pluralistic influences within a multicultural society on self-image and the conception of the other.

Daneben dient die Zeitschrift als Forum zur Positionierung der Fächer Jüdische Studien und Judaistik innerhalb des wissenschaftlichen Diskurses sowie zur Diskussion ihrer historischen und gesellschaftlichen Verantwortung.
N2  - The journal aims at documenting the fruitful and multifarious culture of Judaism as well as its relations to its environment within diverse areas of research. In addition, the journal is meant to promote Jewish Studies within academic discourse and discuss its historic and social responsibility.
