The present study (based on representative data sets from the US, N = 1,017, and Germany, N = 1030) addresses these issues by using a scenario-based experiment to analyze how satisfied voluntary simplifiers (people who voluntarily abstain from consumption) are with their purchase decisions in the case of a muesli brand. The research question is whether people who follow a sustainable, simple lifestyle are more satisfied with their daily consumption choices than people who have a more consumerist lifestyle. If so, it would be easier for many people to change their lifestyles and consume less. In addition, this scenario experiment manipulates consumer empowerment and decision complexity since both factors are supposed to influence purchase satisfaction. The results are consistent across both countries and indicate that voluntary simplifiers experience a higher level of purchasing satisfaction than non-simplifiers, whereby empowerment and decision complexity play different roles. Research has already shown that SC has beneficial effects on affective well-being and other mental health outcomes. However, little is known in which ways SC might facilitate our affective well-being in stressful situations. Hence, a central concern of this dissertation was to focus on the question which underlying processes might influence the link between SC and affective well-being. Two established components in stress processing, which might also play an important role in this context, could be the amount of experienced stress and the way of coping with a stressor. Thus, using a multi-method approach, this dissertation aimed at finding to which extent SC might help to alleviate the experienced stress and promotes the use of more salutary coping, while dealing with stressful circumstances. These processes might ultimately help improve one’s affective well-being. Derived from that, it was hypothesized that more SC is linked to less perceived stress and intensified use of salutary coping responses. Additionally, it was suggested that perceived stress and coping mediate the relation between SC and affective well-being. Method: The research questions were targeted in three single studies and one meta-study. To test my assumptions about the relations of SC and coping in particular, a systematic literature search was conducted resulting in k = 136 samples with an overall sample size of N = 38,913. To integrate the z-transformed Pearson correlation coefficients, random-effects models were calculated. All hypotheses were tested with a three-wave cross-lagged design in two short-term longitudinal online studies assessing SC, perceived stress and coping responses in all waves. The first study explored the assumptions in a student sample (N = 684) with a mean age of 27.91 years over a six-week period, whereas the measurements were implemented in the GESIS Panel (N = 2934) with a mean age of 52.76 years analyzing the hypotheses in a populationbased sample across eight weeks. Finally, an ambulatory assessment study was designed to expand the findings of the longitudinal studies to the intraindividual level. Thus, a sample of 213 participants completed questionnaires of momentary SC, perceived stress, engagement and disengagement coping, and affective well-being on their smartphones three times per day over seven consecutive days. The data was processed using 1-1-1 multilevel mediation analyses. Results: Results of the meta-analysis indicated that higher SC is significantly associated with more use of engagement coping and less use of disengagement coping. Considering the relations between SC and stress processing variables in all three single studies, cross-lagged paths from the longitudinal data, as well as multilevel modeling paths from the ambulatory assessment data indicated a notable relation between all relevant stress variables. As expected, results showed a significant negative relation between SC and perceived stress and disengagement coping, as well as a positive connection with engagement coping responses at the dispositional and intra-individual level. However, considering the mediational hypothesis, the most promising pathway in the link between SC and affective well-being turned out to be perceived stress in all three studies, while effects of the mediational pathways through coping responses were less robust. Conclusion: Thus, a more self-compassionate attitude and higher momentary SC, when needed in specific situations, can help to engage in effective stress processing. Considering the underlying mechanisms in the link between SC and affective well-being, stress perception in particular seemed to be the most promising candidate for enhancing affective well-being at the dispositional and at the intraindividual level. Future research should explore the pathways between SC and affective well-being in specific contexts and samples, and also take into account additional influential factors. N2 - Hintergrund: In den letzten zwei Jahrzehnten erregte das Konzept Selbstmitgefühl (SMG), eine besondere Art des Mitgefühls um sich im Umgang mit stressigen Lebensumständen zurechtzufinden, zunehmend Aufmerksamkeit in der Forschung. Zahlreiche Untersuchungen haben bereits gezeigt, dass SMG positive Auswirkungen auf das affektive Wohlbefinden sowie auf die psychische Gesundheit im Allgemeinen hat. Allerdings ist wenig darüber bekannt wie SMG unser affektives Wohlbefinden in Stresssituationen verbessern kann. Daher war es ein zentrales Anliegen dieser Dissertation, die Frage zu beantworten, welche zugrundeliegenden Prozesse den Zusammenhang zwischen SMG und affektivem Wohlbefinden beeinflussen können. Zwei etablierte Komponenten im Stressverarbeitungsprozess, die in diesem Zusammenhang ebenfalls eine wichtige Rolle spielen könnten, sind die Menge an erlebtem Stress sowie die Art und Weise, wie mit einem Stressor umgegangen wird (Coping). Unter Verwendung eines Multimethodenansatzes, war es demnach Ziel dieser Dissertation herauszufinden, inwieweit SMG dazu beitragen kann, den erlebten Stress abzumildern und eine heilsamere Bewältigung im Umgang mit stressigen Situationen zu fördern. Diese Prozesse könnten letztendlich dazu beitragen, das affektive Wohlbefinden zu verbessern. Die Daten wurden mithilfe von 1-1-1-Multilevel-Mediationsanalysen analysiert. Ergebnisse: Die Ergebnisse der Metaanalyse zeigten, dass eine Ausprägung in SMG signifikant mit mehr Einsatz von Annäherungscoping und weniger Einsatz von Vermeidungscoping verbunden ist. Sowohl die cross-lagged Pfade der Längstschnittstudien als auch die Pfade der Mehrebenenanalysen des Ambulanten Assessments zeigten erwartete Zusammenhänge zwischen SMG und allen relevanten Stressvariablen. Wie erwartet, zeigte sich ein signifikant negativer Zusammenhang zwischen SMG und wahrgenommenem Stress sowie Vermeidungscoping sowohl auf dispositioneller als auch intraindividueller Ebene. Des Weiteren wurde ein positiver Zusammenhang mit Annäherungscoping auf beiden Ebenen gefunden. Die Mediationshypothese konnte nur teilweise bestätigt werden. So erwies sich der Mediator wahrgenommener Stress als konsistent im Zusammenhang zwischen SMG und affektivem Wohlbefinden in allen drei Studien, während die Mediationspfade für Coping weniger robust waren. Fazit: Eine selbstmitfühlendere Haltung sowie höheres momentanes SMG kann in bestimmten Situationen dabei helfen, Stress effektiver zu bewältigen. Insbesondere weniger Stresswahrnehmung scheint ein vielversprechender Kandidat in der Vermittlung des Zusammenhangs zwischen SMG und affektivem Wohlbefinden auf dispositionell und auf intraindividueller Ebene zu sein. Personen mit mehr SMG erleben in anspruchsvollen Situationen weniger Stress, was schon von Beginn des stressigen Erlebnisses für das AWB förderlich sein kann, ohne dass weitere Bewältigungsreaktionen erforderlich werden. However, this approach to studying proactivity has not yet acknowledged its potential implications for the actor’s well-being. Drawing on the fact that resources at work are limited and that the workplace is a social system characterized by interdependencies, we proposed that daily proactivity could have a negative effect on daily well-being. We furthermore proposed that this effect should be mediated by work overload and negative affect. We conducted a daily diary study (N = 72) to test the potential negative effects of proactivity on daily well-being. Data was collected across 3 consecutive work days. During several daily measurement occasions, participants reported proactivity, work overload, negative affect, and fatigue. They also provided 4 saliva samples per day, from which cortisol was assayed. Based on the 4 samples, a measure of daily cortisol output was produced. Multilevel analyses showed that daily proactivity was positively associated with higher daily cortisol output. The positive association of daily proactivity with bedtime fatigue was marginally significant. There was no support for a mediating effect of work overload and negative affect. Implications for theory-building on the proactivity–well-being link are discussed. The present study aims to examine psychometric properties of the Coping with Cyberhate Questionnaire, the prevalence of coping strategies in Spanish adolescents, differences in coping strategies based in sex, age, and victim status, and the association between coping with cyberhate and adolescents' mental well-being. Method: The sample consisted of 1,005 adolescents between 12 and 18 years old (Mage = 14.28 years, SD = 1.63; 51.9% girls) who completed self-report measures on coping strategies, victimization status, and mental well-being. Results: The results of confirmatory factor analyses showed a structure for the Coping with Cyberhate Questionnaire composed of six factors, namely Distal advice, Assertiveness, Helplessness/Selfblame, Close support, Technical coping, and Retaliation. It demonstrated acceptable internal consistency. The three most frequently endorsed coping strategies were Technical coping, Close support, and Assertiveness. Empowering leadership enhances the meaningfulness of work by fostering participation in decision-making, expressing confidence in high performance, and providing autonomy in target setting (Cheong, 2016). I examine how empowering leadership affects followers’ reflection. I used data from 528 individuals across 172 teams and found a positive relationship between empowering leadership and followers’ reflection. Followers’ reflection, in turn, is negatively associated with followers’ withdrawal, which mediates the beneficial effect of empowering leadership on leaders’ emotional exhaustion. As for the leaders, I propose that empowering leadership is negatively related also to leaders’ emotional exhaustion. This research broadens our understanding of empowering leadership's effects on both followers and leaders. Moreover, it integrates empowering leadership, leader emotional exhaustion, and burnout literature. Overall, empowering leadership strengthens members’ reflective attitudes and behaviors, which result in reduced withdrawal (and increased presence and contribution) in teams. Because the members contribute to team effort more, the leaders experience less emotional exhaustion. Hence, my work not only identifies new ways through which empowering leadership positively affects followers but also shows how these positive effects on followers benefit the leaders’ well-being. Their functionalities allow users to connect and interact with others and weave complex social networks in which social information is continuously disseminated between users. Besides the social value SNSs are generating, they likewise attract companies and allow for new forms of marketing, thereby creating considerable economic value alike. However, as SNSs grew in popularity, so did concerns about the impact of their use on social interactions in general and the well-being of individual users in particular. While existing scientific evidence points to both risk as well as benefits of SNS use, research still lacks a profound understanding of which aspects of SNSs enable an impact on well-being and which psychological processes on the part of the users underly and explain this relationship. Therefore, this thesis is dedicated to an in-depth exploration of the relationship between SNS use and well-being and aims to answer how SNS use can impact well-being. Primarily, it focuses on the unique technological features that characterize SNSs and enable potential well- being alterations and on specific psychological processes on the part of the users, underlying and explaining the relationship. For this purpose, the thesis first introduces the concept of well- being. It continues by presenting SNSs’ unique technological features, divided into specifics of the content disseminated on SNSs and the network structure of SNSs. Further, the thesis introduces three classes of psychological processes assumed most relevant for the relationship between SNSs and well-being: other-focused, self-focused, and contrastive processes.. It is assumed that the course and quality of these common processes change in the SNS context and that a complex interplay between the unique features of SNSs and these processes determines how SNSs may ultimately affect users' well-being - both in positive and negative ways. The dissertation comprises seven research articles, each of which focusses on a particular set of SNS characteristics, their interplay with one or more of the proposed psychological processes, and ultimately the resulting effects on user well-being or its key resilience and risk factors. The seven articles investigate this relationship using different methodological approaches. Three articles are based on either systematic or narrative literature reviews, one applies an empirical cross-sectional research design, and three articles present an experimental investigation. Thematically, two articles revolve around SNS use’s effect on self-esteem. Three articles examine the specific role of the emotion of envy and its potential to establish and perpetuate a well-being-damaging social climate on SNSs. The two last articles of this thesis revolve around the established assumption that active and passive SNS use, as different modalities of SNS use, cause differential effects on users’ well-being due to the involvement of different psychological processes. The results of this thesis illustrate different ways how SNSs can affect users’ well-being. The results suggest that especially contrastive processes play a decisive role in explaining potential well-being risks for SNS users. Their interplay with certain SNS features seems to foster upward social comparisons and feelings of envy, potentially leading to a complex set of deleterious effects on users’ well-being. At the same time, the findings illuminate ways in which SNSs can benefit users and their self-esteem – especially when SNS use promotes self- focused and social-feedback-based other-focused processes. The thesis and their findings illustrate that the relationship between SNSs and well-being is complex. Therefore, a nuanced perspective, taking into consideration both the technological uniqueness of SNSs and the psychological processes they are enabling, is crucial to understand how these technologies affect their users in good and potentially harmful ways. On the one hand, the gathered insights contribute to research, providing novel insights into the complex relationship between SNS use and well-being. On the other hand, the results enable a focused and action-oriented derivation of recommendations for stakeholders such as individual users, policymakers, and platform providers. Prior to this, validity evidence was provided for the German version of the Basic Psychological Need Satisfaction and Frustration Scale (BPNSFS) based on Self-Determination Theory (SDT). The results of the validation analyses found the German BPNSFS to be a valid and reliable measurement. Further, structural equation modeling (SEM) showed that both need satisfaction and frustration yielded unique and opposing associations with well-being. Specifically, the dimension of psychological need frustration predicted adults’ ill-being. The study considers gender, socioeconomic status, and school form as potential confounders. The results of the structural equation model, analyzed with the statistical software R, indicate that perceived teacher support was positively related to students' self-worth and physical well-being, while peer support was related to psychological well-being. Darüber hinaus wurden die Annahmen über die Mediation dieser Einflüsse überwiegend gestützt. Hypothesenkonform wurde der Einfluss von Autonomie und Ganzheitlichkeit auf psychologisches Wohlbefinden seriell mediiert über folgende Pfade: (1) Autonomie und Ganzheitlichkeit führten zu mehr Empowerment, nachfolgend zu weniger Entfremdung und schließlich zu höherem psychologischem Wohlbefinden und (2) Autonomie und Ganzheitlichkeit führten zu mehr Empowerment, nachfolgend zu mehr proaktivem Verhalten und schließlich zu höherem psychologischem Wohlbefinden. Die ad-hoc Hypothese über die mediierende Rolle von affektivem Commitment wurde nicht bestätigt. Post-hoc Testungen von 3fach seriellen Mediationen wiesen jedoch auf einen schwachen indirekten Effekt von Autonomie und Ganzheitlichkeit auf psychologisches Wohlbefinden über Entfremdung, affektives Commitment und nachfolgend Entfremdung oder stattdessen proaktives Verhalten hin. Die Arbeit leistet einen Beitrag zur Klärung der Rolle der Self-Determination Theory als arbeitspsychologisches Modell der Entstehungsprozesse von Wohlbefinden durch Arbeit und erweitert das Wissen um Antezedenzien und Konsequenzen der Konzepte Empowerment, affektives Commitment, Entfremdung und proaktives Verhalten sowie sie deren Erklärbarkeit durch die Self-Determination Theory unterstreicht. Schließlich werden aus den Ergebnissen ableitend verschiedene theoretische Implikationen diskutiert und Empfehlungen für die Gestaltung von Arbeit mit dem Ziel einer besseren, humanistischeren Gesellschaft formuliert. N2 - There is no doubt that work, both from the perspective of the individual and society, is of significant relevance to human life. Therefore, research on this relation is of growing interest in the field of work and organizational psychology. This study analyzed a process model, in which need-supportive work conditions have positive effects on psychological well-being (eudaimonia) mediated by empowerment, affective commitment, alienation, and proactive behavior. The process model of this thesis was built on the self-determination theory (SDT) model in the workplace. For the analysis, I collected and assessed cross-sectional data from a convenience sample of 172 working adults from Western society. Hypotheses were tested using hierarchical regression analysis and the PROCESS macro for SPSS. Results show significant positive effects of autonomy and task identity on psychological well-being. Furthermore, the hypotheses about the mediation of these effects were supported. As hypothesized, the effects of autonomy and task identity on psychological well-being were serially mediated via the following paths: (1) Autonomy and task identity positively influenced empowerment, which in turn exercised a negative effect on alienation, which then negatively affected psychological well-being. (2) Autonomy and task identity positively influenced empowerment, which in turn exercised a positive effect on proactive behavior, which then positively affected psychological well-being. The data did not show the hypothesized mediating role of affective commitment. Yet, testing of post-hoc assumptions about three mediators operating in serial showed a weak, indirect effect of autonomy and task identity on psychological well-being via (1) empowerment, affective commitment, and alienation, and (2) empowerment, affective commitment, and proactive behavior. This thesis contributes to the clarification of SDT as a theory of work psychology. It supports the role of SDT as a useful theory of describing the formation process of well-being. Moreover, the thesis extends research about the antecedents and consequences of empowerment, affective commitment, alienation, and proactive behavior on the one hand, and it underlines the relation of those concepts with SDT on the other. At last, I discuss various theoretical implications and draw conclusions for practitioners of today and the society of tomorrow. However, the occurrence of the COVID-19 pandemic raises the question of whether society is going to continue down a path of increased awareness of sustainable consumption or whether the pandemic will move people to focus more on themselves. Based on data gathered before and near the end of the first pandemic lockdown in Germany in spring 2020, this research demonstrates that ecological, social, and voluntary simplicity consciousness deteriorated in the minds of sustainability-conscious consumers, with notable impacts on their willingness to spend sustainably and their shopping affinity. Furthermore, we identify segments that show particular vulnerability to the lockdown by reacting with a decrease in their ecological consumption consciousness. This study concludes with a discussion of the pandemic's implications for the spread of sustainable consumption styles and human well-being.
