N2 - In the context of the Algerian independence, most French-Jewish citizens left the former colony in North Africa. According to algerian-born, French-Jewish historian Benjamin Stora, this migration is the last of three exiles into which Algeria’s Jewish population had entered during the 130-year long colonial period. Departing from Stora’s assumption, three novels by Jewish writers of Algerian origin are being presented in this paper, which are dealing with the issues of loss of home and exile: Gil Ben Aych’s Le livre d’Étoile, Annie Cohen’s Le marabout de Blida, and Rolland Doukhan’s Berechit. Beside Stora’s hypothesis, the terms nostalgérie and algériance, which were introduced by Jacques Derrida and Hélène Cixous, form the starting point for the present work. In the first theoretical sub-chapter, the author discusses several definitions and views of the term exile – by Elisabeth Bronfen, Edward Said, Hannah Arendt, Jean Améry, and André Aciman, among others – and demonstrates the multi-layerdness of this term. Following this examination, he develops a definition of exile, according to which exile represents a forced or voluntary, physical or mental change of one’s place or residence, and which has as its counterpoint the notion of home(land), which can be seen as a physical-geographical or as an ideal-abstract space. In the second chapter, based on the assumption that the theme of exile plays an important role in the collective memory of Judaism, the author presents three topoi to which Jewish as well as non-Jewish thinkers, literary writers and historians relate: the biblical story of Job, the motif of rootlessness or the "Eternal" or "Wandering Jew", the topos of the "People of the Book". The history of Algerian Jewry is being presented in the third theoretical sub-chapter, widely referring to Stora’s work. In the analytical part of the work, and based on the preceding theoretical reflections, the author examines the three novels. In all of the works, different forms of exile are being shown: geographical, social, and inner exile, which superimpose each other in the situation of the protagonists. Furthermore, strategies in dealing with the exile situation become visible, which can be associated with the Jewish tradition and origin of the characters. These include Jewish rituals of everyday life, the search for support in faith, the theme of rootlessness in contrast to settledness, finding home in writing, and the Jewish tradition of textual interpretation. To this end, each of the novels is associated with one of the three previously introduced topoi. City and state authorities have actively embraced issues around immigration and integration as well as the promotion of religious diversity and interreligious dialogue and have linked this to the agenda of rejuvenating the city’s religious heritage. For years, negotiations have been going on about the need of a mosque, the reconstructions of a synagogue and the so-called “Garrison Church,” a landmark military church building. These initiatives have been dominating the public space for different reasons. They implied, beyond religion, questions of memory, identity, immigration, and culture. This article puts these three cases into perspective to offer a nuanced understanding of the importance of religious spaces in secular contexts considering city politics. This essay reconsiders the affinity of Buber's late writings with Volkish ideology. It examines the allegations against Buber's Volkish thought in light of his later biblical and Hasidic writings. By illuminating the ideological affinity between these two modes of thought, the essay explains how Buber aims to depart from the dangers of myth without rejecting myth as such. I argue that Buber's relationship to myth can help us to explain his critique of nationalism. My basic argument is that in his struggle with hyper-nationalism, Buber follows the Baal Shem Tov and his struggle against Sabbateanism. Like the Besht, Buber does not reject myth, but seeks instead to repair it from within. Whereas hyper-nationalism uses myth to advance its political goals, Buber seeks to reposition ethics within a mythic framework. I view Buber's exegesis and commentaries on biblical and Hasidic myths as myth-activism. Hiyya bar Ashi and his wife JF - European Judaism N2 - The narrative in BT Kiddushin 81b about R. Hiyya bar Ashi tells of a sage who waged a battle with his Urge after he refrained from engaging in sexual relations with his wife. He, however, did not reveal to her the battle being waged within him, but rather pretended to be an ‘angel’. When his wife incidentally found it, she disguised herself as a harlot and set out to seduce him. After they had engaged in sexual relations, the rabbi wanted to commit suicide. The traditional readings view R. Hiyya as the hero of the tale. This article claims that the aim of the narrative is to present the rabbi as being carried away by dualistic-Christian conceptions. The article further argues that the topic of the narrative is not sexual relations, but dialogue.
