TY - JOUR A1 - Menne, Ulrich T1 - Weakly Differentiable Functions on Varifolds JF - Indiana University mathematics journal N2 - The present paper is intended to provide the basis for the study of weakly differentiable functions on rectifiable varifolds with locally bounded first variation. The concept proposed here is defined by means of integration-by-parts identities for certain compositions with smooth functions. In this class, the idea of zero boundary values is realised using the relative perimeter of superlevel sets. Results include a variety of Sobolev Poincare-type embeddings, embeddings into spaces of continuous and sometimes Holder-continuous functions, and point wise differentiability results both of approximate and integral type as well as coarea formulae. As a prerequisite for this study, decomposition properties of such varifolds and a relative isoperimetric inequality are established. Both involve a concept of distributional boundary of a set introduced for this purpose. As applications, the finiteness of the geodesic distance associated with varifolds with suitable summability of the mean curvature and a characterisation of curvature varifolds are obtained. T1 - Tropical peatland carbon storage linked to global latitudinal trends in peat recalcitrance T2 - Postprints der Universität Potsdam : Mathematisch-Naturwissenschaftliche Reihe N2 - Peatlands represent large terrestrial carbon banks. Given that most peat accumulates in boreal regions, where low temperatures and water saturation preserve organic matter, the existence of peat in (sub)tropical regions remains enigmatic. Here we examined peat and plant chemistry across a latitudinal transect from the Arctic to the tropics. Near-surface low-latitude peat has lower carbohydrate and greater aromatic content than near-surface high-latitude peat, creating a reduced oxidation state and resulting recalcitrance. This recalcitrance allows peat to persist in the (sub)tropics despite warm temperatures. Because we observed similar declines in carbohydrate content with depth in high-latitude peat, our data explain recent field-scale deep peat warming experiments in which catotelm (deeper) peat remained stable despite temperature increases up to 9 degrees C. We suggest that high-latitude deep peat reservoirs may be stabilized in the face of climate change by their ultimately lower carbohydrate and higher aromatic composition, similar to tropical peats. The resulting geophysical anomaly maps of, for example, magnetic or electrical parameters are usually interpreted to laterally delineate subsurface structures such as those related to the remains of past human activities, subsurface utilities and other installations, hydrological properties, or different soil types. To ease the interpretation of such data sets, we have developed a multiscale processing, analysis, and visualization strategy. Our approach relies on a discrete redundant wavelet transform (RWT) implemented using cubic-spline filters and the a trous algorithm, which allows to efficiently compute a multiscale decomposition of 2D data using a series of 1D convolutions. The basic idea of the approach is presented using a synthetic test image, whereas our archaeogeophysical case study from northeast Germany demonstrates its potential to analyze and process rather typical geophysical anomaly maps including magnetic and topographic data. Our vertical-gradient magnetic data show amplitude variations over several orders of magnitude, complex anomaly patterns at various spatial scales, and typical noise patterns, whereas our topographic data show a distinct hill structure superimposed by a microtopographic stripe pattern and random noise. Our results demonstrate that the RWT approach is capable to successfully separate these components and that selected wavelet planes can be scaled and combined so that the reconstructed images allow for a detailed, multiscale structural interpretation also using integrated visualizations of magnetic and topographic data. Because our analysis approach is straightforward to implement without laborious parameter testing and tuning, computationally efficient, and easily adaptable to other geophysical data sets, we believe that it can help to rapidly analyze and interpret different geophysical mapping data collected to address a variety of near-surface applications from engineering practice and research. The impact of these variables on the changes of the CO₂ emissions is not the same for all countries of the earth. Time series of carbon dioxide emissions from burning of fossil energies, population, gross domestic product and of primary energy supply of 121 countries were analyzed. The classes of countries according to their energy use profile can be regarded as representative of different states and of different paths of development. Most of these studies have found dissociations in how children apply regular and irregular inflection (Marcus et al. 1992, Weyerts & Clahsen 1994, Rothweiler & Clahsen 1993). These studies have considerably deepened our understanding of how linguistic knowledge is acquired and organised in the human mind. Their methodological procedures, however, do not involve measurements of how children process morphologically complex forms in real time. To date, little is known about how children process inflected word forms. The aim of this study is to investigate children’s processing of inflected words in a series of on-line reaction time experiments. We used a cross-modal priming experiment to test for decompositional effects on the central level. We used a speeded production task and a lexical decision task to test for frequency effects on access level in production and recognition. Children’s behaviour was compared to adults’ behaviour towards three participle types (-t participles, e.g. getanzt ‘danced’ vs. -n participles with stem change, e.g. gebrochen ‘broken’ vs.-n participles without stem change, e.g. geschlafen ‘slept’). For the central level, results indicate that -t participles but not -n participles have decomposed representations. For the access level, results indicate that -t participles are represented according to their morphemes and additionally as full forms, at least from the age of nine years onwards (Pinker 1999 and Clahsen et al. 2004). Further evidence suggested that -n participles are represented as full-form entries on access level and that -n participles without stem change may encode morphological structure (cf. Clahsen et al. 2003). Out data also suggests that processing strategies for -t participles are differently applied in recognition and production. These results provide evidence that children (within the age range tested) employ the same mechanisms for processing participles as adults. The child lexicon grows as children form additional full-form representations for -t participles on access level and elaborate their full-form lexical representations of -n participles on central level. These results are consistent with processing as explained in dual-system theories. N2 - Magnetic colloidal particles are attractive because of their possible application to ultra-high-density magnetic data storage media, sensors, electronic devices and medical diagnostics. The properties of small particles depend on their composition, shape, and method of preparation. The combination of 3d-metals (Fe, Co, Ni) with noble metals improves the stability of the colloids and leads to new properties of the magnetic systems, often distinct from those of the corresponding monometallic particles. Core-shell particles, where dia- or paramagnetic noble metal-cores are surrounded by a ferromagnetic Co-shell, are an interesting system to study surface and interfacial magnetism such as an induced polarization or a giant magnetoresistance effect. In this work, new synthetic routes for the preparation of monometallic (Pt, Pd, Ag) and bimetallic magnetic nanocrystals (Ag@Co, Pt@Co, Pd@Co) with core-shell structure are presented. Stable colloids with a narrow particle size distribution were obtained in organic solvents using methods of wet chemistry. The method of preparation of Ag@Co is based on the thermal decomposition of dicobalt octycarbonyl in combination with a transmetalation reaction with water free AgClO4. The cobalt amount in the Ag@Co system could be tuned from 5 to 73 at. %. The average diameter of the particles was varied from 5 to 15 nm. The reduction of platinum and palladium salts in organic solution using long chained alcohol as the reductant leads to stable metal nanostructures. Monodisperse Pd and Pt particles with average sizes of 1.7 to 7.0 nm were synthesized via thermal decomposition of metal-surfactant complexes too. Alkylamines and alkylphosphines were used in this procedure. The thickness of the Co-shell was controlled by a simple high-temperature thermolysis of dicobalt octacarbonyl at the presence of Pd and Pt seeds and was tunable from 0.5 to 2.5 nm. The crystalline structure of the samples was characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDX), UV-VIS and electron-energy loss spectroscopy (EELS). SQUID magnetometry, x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) and extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) measurements gave information about the magnetic properties of the bimetallic systems and revealed their dependency on the particle size and the chemical composition. A high spin to orbital moments ratio µL/µS of 0.26±0.06 for Ag@Co and 0.22±0.05 for Pt@Co nanocrystals was observed at XMCD measurements due to the lowered dimensionality the investigated systems. This is problematic because both theoretical and empirical evidence show that the position in the wealth and income distribution can significantly diverge. We measure ex-ante IOp in net wealth for Germany using data from the Socio-Economic Panel (SOEP). Ex-ante IOp is defined as the contribution of circumstances to the inequality in net wealth before effort is exerted. The SOEP allows for a direct mapping from individual circumstances to individual net wealth and for a detailed decomposition of net wealth inequality into a variety of circumstances; among them childhood background, intergenerational transfers, and regional characteristics. The ratio of inequality of opportunity to total inequality is stable from 2002 to 2019. This is in sharp contrast to labor earnings, where ex-ante IOp is declining over time. Our estimates suggest that about 62% of the inequality in net wealth is due to circumstances. The most important circumstances are intergenerational transfers, parental occupation, and the region of birth. In contrast, gender and individuals’ own education are the most important circumstances for earnings.
