Heimat
This research presents a transareal study of the autofictional series of the Austrian writer Thomas Bernhard and the Colombian Fernando Vallejo, two authors whose work is marked by a fierce critique of their homelands, their Heimaten, but also by a complex rootedness. The interpretative analyses show that in Die Autobiographie and El río del tiempo the Heimat is presented as a construct that encompasses not only blissful but also negative, dissolutive, destructive elements, thus distancing both authors from a traditional conception of Heimat as a necessarily harmonic territory to which the subject feels positively attached. Instead, it is conceived as a dissimilar set, to which the subject relates, necessarily, in an ambivalent and problematic way. In both authors, literary narration is configured as an act in which this ambivalence is not simply represented, but in which, above all, the forms of hostility that give the Heimat its inhospitable character are contested. To this end, the authors resort to the implementation of two fundamental resources: mimesis and movement. The research demonstrates how their literary works present the Heimat as a space of continuous movements, exchanges and interactions, in which structures of oppression are at work, but also opposition mechanisms, practices of intersubjective openness and aspirations of community integration.

Silenzio, immagini e parole. La costruzione del significato nella multimodalità digitale
Stille, Bilder und Wörter. Die Bedeutungskonstitution in der digitalen Multimodalität
SILENCE, IMAGES AND WORDS. The construction of meaning in digital multimodality.
What happens when different linguistic awareness, apart from being separated from the era, from the geographical area of origin or from social differentiation, is not only pertinent to different linguistic dimensions, but also to different semiotic domains? This is what occurs every time we communicate on a social network: digital interaction is, in fact, the hybrid field of communication par excellence, in which a mixture of different languages is superimposed on different codes. It is precisely the new expressive needs and the new communicative situations that push towards linguistic innovations; it therefore seems interesting to take into account the importance assumed by the visual repertoire in the spontaneous use of new media as well as the particular strategies of construction of the meaning that cannot be separated from these second dimensions. The role of digital communication has been addressed through research using different scientific perspectives: this project investigates how different research areas, apparently distant from each other, can productively interact with the scientific landscape of language sciences, of image and communication. We should be aware of these other functions of the language in digital use to be able to deal with all the innovations connected to it without prejudice. The indexical function of language has a crucial role in the use of verbal language on the Internet, which is associated with the presence of a shared archive of reference and determines a new kind of inferentiality in the receiver. Online Conversation, in fact, allows actions that are not necessarily present in the vis-a-vis verbal exchange, but which are instead specific to FB, Twitter, G +, Instagram, Flickr and other social networks: the sharing of various multimedia material, the option to retrieve messages related to a specific topic and the possibility to gloss it. The multimedia material thus becomes simultaneously an integral part of the communication and expressive modality, focus of the discourse and shared metaphorical language. We are faced with a metamorphosis of the media communication structure that overlaps written text and image. The digital dimension assumed by communication in recent years has made it possible to focus more clearly on the model of these conglomerates. Internet, especially social media, in fact, allows us to observe these conglomerates of language and image while speakers spontaneously create them. This research proposes a transversal path that considers all the semiotic domains normally involved in digital communication, proposing the formulation of an updated model of the dynamics of linguistic hybridization of the current digital dimension.

Words of founders, strangers and cachacos
The thesis analyzes the mentality of the bourgeois residents of Bogota from the XIX century. Insights into the external and internal perspectives of Bogotá are obtained by the analysis of travel literature. Methodologically, the work is based on the comparison between European travel reports from the XIX century, chronicles from the 16th century and two Colombian novels from the early XX. century. The different texts are treated historiographically; although they belong to different literary genres, they have a common autobiographical character. From the experiences and thoughts of travelers, the impact of geographic and social isolation is identified, as well as the influence of political and religious discourses on the formation of bourgeois ideology.

Writing travel, writing life
Reisen schreiben Leben
Écriture, le voyage ou la vie
The book compares the texts of three Swiss authors: Ella Maillart, Annemarie Schwarzenbach and Nicolas Bouvier. The focus is on their trip from Genève to Kabul that Ella Maillart and Annemarie Schwarzenbach made together in 1939/1940 and Nicolas Bouvier 1953/1954 with the artist Thierry Vernet. The comparison shows the strong connection between the journey and life and between ars vivendi and travel literature.
This book also gives an overview of and organises the numerous terms, genres, and categories that already exist to describe various travel texts and proposes the new term travelling narration. The travelling narration looks at the text from a narratological perspective that distinguishes the author, narrator, and protagonist within the narration.
In the examination, ten motifs could be found to characterise the travelling narration: Culture, Crossing Borders, Freedom, Time and Space, the Aesthetics of Landscapes, Writing and Reading, the Self and/as the Other, Home, Religion and Spirituality as well as the Journey. The importance of each individual motif does not only apply in the 1930s or 1950s but also transmits important findings for living together today and in the future.

Parlache as an evocative element of fictional orality in the novel Rosario Tijeras, by Jorge Franco
The present dissertation aims to analyse how the reality of spoken language is evoked in the novel Rosario Tijeras, by the Colombian writer Jorge Franco, and its German and English translations. In this thriller, Franco uses a colloquial language called parlache, which originated in a deprived socio-economic area of Medellín and has spread not only across the city but across the whole country. First of all, this study will focus on the description of diatopic and diastratic variation in fiction—specifically, typical expressions from the so-called parlache. Thus, this investigation aims to establish how some typical linguistic features of this variety of Spanish contribute to the construction of a believable spoken dialogue, as well as how this “local colour” evokes orality, and how it is depicted in the German and English translations. Therefore, this study will analyse translation divergences and the description of linguistic variation (diatopic and diastratic) in literary translation.

Was ist HipHop?
What is hip-hop?
The described dissertation is an investigative research paper, covering the dynamic and ever-changing phenomena of hip-hop. The author will explain the continued attraction drawn by the hip-hop culture and will attempt to explain its’ reproduceable impact in more detail. To achieve this, he starts with a historic discourse analysis of the hip-hop culture. In order to give a greater understanding of the subject he analyses the different forms, protagonists as well as the dialogue of hip-hop.
The author will show that hip-hop has multi-layered characteristics and through elaboration using scientific tools and media sources he will further qualify and criticize the subject. The research combines cultural and educational science literature with different time-relevant and historic presentations alongside graphic images. Especially self-staged photos of rap artists and personal testimonials from interviews, which the author personally conducted, with a variety of artists throughout Germany, will be analysed. Besides the accounts reflected in the interviews a large emphasis has been focused on imagery interpretation in line with Bohnsack, which will serve as the source to the multi-layering thesis.
In this connection two images of artists Lady Bitch Ray and Kollegah are interpreted according to Bohnsack (2014), to show that hip-hop does not only have a lyrical and musical component to it but is also visually staged and produced. This research work will conclude that it is possible in hip-hop culture to present contrasting viewpoints through the use of cultural traditions, such as ‘boasting’.
The ongoing open-mindedness of hip-hop will become clear through the analysis of ‘sampling’ and the ‘rap battle’, the author will proof how such traditional techniques create multi-layered hip-hop characteristics. With this conclusion he supports a type of modular theory, stating that principally anybody can take advantage of what hip-hop as to offer, regardless of their preferences, interests, or affections.
Through the diversity of opinions in hip-hop culture, which the author is presented with through the interpretation of the interviews, his proposition becomes clear and he is able to conclude that the phenomenon of hip-hop is more than just a temporary fad. Hip-hop has the fundamental potential to continuously change, and through its open-mindedness manages to keep increasing its’ popularity and demand over time. This research paper builds on the continuous interest into the research of hip-hop culture and asks important questions, which validates further research into the topic and aims to make hip-hop more accessible.

Subcultures creating culture
Subcultures creating culture
Subcultures creating culture
The purpose of this work is to apply the methods of textual semiotics to subcultures, in particular to the little known glam subculture. Subcultures have been the main research field of the Birmingham Centre for Contemporary Cultural Studies, known for its interdisciplinary approach, and for its focus on the creative aspects of subculture. Hebdige, in particular, introduced many semiotic elements in his work, as the aberrant decoding after Eco and the cultural creativity via bricolage after Lévi-Strauss. His definition of subculture as symbolic resistance has been criticized by the following post-subcultural researchers for its abstractness and lack of cohesion.
Semiotics eventually have been expelled from the set of tools used in sociology for the analysis of subcultures. Nowadays, the studies on subcultures have a strong ethnographic focus. Due to terminological proliferation and a descriptive approach, it is difficult to compare them on a common basis.
Textual semiotics, through the concept of semiosphere developed by Lotman, allows to go back to the intuitions of Hebdige, organizing the semiotic elements already present in his work into a wider system of interpretation. The semiosphere offers a coherent theoretical horizon as a basis for further analysis, and a new methodological perspective focusing on the cultural. In this thesis for the first time the work of Lotman is applied to the study of a subculture.

Apokalipsen Frauen
Apocalyptc Women
Mujeres del Apocalipsis address new readings on gender in Colonial Latin-American Culture. The study is based on inquisition records of Beatas: pious woman, commonly accused of heretical behaviour. Women who gained freedom and a partial share of power through religion imaginary. A citical approach to the reading of her life and imageneries shows the apperance of a new concept of womanhood in the era.

Myth and modernity in the work of Rosamel del Valle
The following research is about the relationship between myth and modernity in the literary work (poems, short stories, novels and chronicles) of the Chilean author Rosamel del Valle (Curacaví, 1901 - Santiago de Chile, 1965). In his diverse texts there is a tension between a poetic project based on a mythical worldview and a historical context that favors more rationalistic views, setting aside what is poetic and mythical. By the nineteenth century, the modernity and its correspondent associated phenomena of modernization caused a shift of poetry in terms of speech, and of the poet as the individual in a precarious situation inside the society, which is extended to the twentieth century. Due to this conflict Rosamel del Valle questions in his work the scope of his own principles both aesthetic and vital. This leads to a vacillation between the confirmation of his poetic-life project and the consciousness of failure. That is why the work of this Chilean poet contains a Lebenswissen, which conceives poetry as a privileged way of life. However, given the historical conditions difficulties it is possible to understand this Lebenswissen also as an ÜberLebenswissen (Ette).
The mythical conception of del Valle poetry is studied in the first part of the text, and also the different levels at which the myth appears in his literary work are analyzed either as thoughts, language and a traditional narration. The identification of poetry and myth shows the main features of his poetics: an ontological conception distinguishing between a visible and an invisible dimension of reality; the mystical tendency of poetry; a cyclical conception of time that establishes a relationship with the discourses of memory and death, and the idea of a utopian past, which through poetry would revive in the present; moreover, the figure of the woman as a symbol of love and poetry.
In the second part, the relationship and the consequences of this "mythical poetry" were investigated under the context of modernity. The effect of the Entzauberung der Welt (Weber) as the specific experience of those times on Rosamel del Valle’s poetics was especially discussed. For all the above mentioned, his impressions on New York were necessary to be pointed out since it was the city where he lived and worked between 1946 and 1963, which turned in his texts into a place where the “poetic dwelling of man” in modernity could be possible.
