Objective: The present study evaluates the long-term effects of a preschool training stimulating phonological awareness and letter-sound correspondence in children at risk for dyslexia under conditions tending more to the kindergarten routine than in the context of an intervention study with controlled conditions. Method: The children at risk for dyslexia of the experimental group (n = 20) were trained with Hören, Lauschen, Lernen 1 und 2 (Küspert & Schneider, 2008; Plume & Schneider, 2004) by their kindergarten teachers. They were compared with an untrained control group of children at risk (n = 43) with regard to their reading and spelling achievement and the percentage of dyslexia in 1st, 2nd and 3rd grades. For statistical analyses data of children with a regular and a postponed enrolment at primary school were used. Results: The preschool intervention indicated long-term effects in the 1st and 2nd grade: The trained children at risk tended to outperform the untrained children at risk in their average reading and spelling competences. Furthermore the percentage of children suffering from dyslexia was significantly lower in the training group compared to the control group. Conclusion: In summary, results indicate long-term efficacy of the preschool training and point to the potential of preventing children at risk to develop severe reading and writing problems.

Towards identifying dyslexia in Standard Indonesian
With its transparent orthography, Standard Indonesian is spoken by over 160 million inhabitants and is the primary language of instruction in education and the government in Indonesia. An assessment battery of reading and reading-related skills was developed as a starting point for the diagnosis of dyslexia in beginner learners. Founded on the International Dyslexia Association’s definition of dyslexia, the test battery comprises nine empirically motivated reading and reading-related tasks assessing word reading, pseudoword reading, arithmetic, rapid automatized naming, phoneme deletion, forward and backward digit span, verbal fluency, orthographic choice (spelling), and writing. The test was validated by computing the relationships between the outcomes on the reading-skills and reading-related measures by means of correlation and factor analyses. External variables, i.e., school grades and teacher ratings of the reading and learning abilities of individual students, were also utilized to provide evidence of its construct validity. Four variables were found to be significantly related with reading-skill measures: phonological awareness, rapid naming, spelling, and digit span. The current study on reading development in Standard Indonesian confirms findings from other languages with transparent orthographies and suggests a test battery including preliminary norm scores for screening and assessment of elementary school children learning to read Standard Indonesian.

Entwicklung und empirische Überprüfung eines Lesetrainings auf Silbenbasis
Development and empirical evaluation of a syllable-based reading program
A syllable-based training program for reading disabled children was developed on the basis of psycholinguistic, educational and linguistic research results. The program teaches explicit strategies to visually segment words in larger functional linguistic units (syllables, prefixes, single words (in compound words)). It is assumed that children with reading difficulties process words in linguistic units that are too small to make use of the linguistic structure of words. The training program, Potsdamer Lesetraining, emphasizes the role of the orthographical syllable as a functional unit in reading development. The program is based on a training program developed by Scheerer-Neumann (1981) that aimed at improving reading accuracy in reading disabled elementary school children. The aim of the empirical test was to check if the training program had a positive effect on the decoding speed and accuracy of elementary school children with reading disabilities (3rd and 4th grade). The program was carried out by the author with a relatively small sample of children (N=11) and without further staff. This procedure made it possible to react intensively and flexible to the children's individual needs. A control group was not implemented for ethical and organizational reasons. The validity of the training program was tested with a pretest-posttest-follow-up-test design. The program consisted of 18 training units (45 minutes each) and took place twice a week. The training groups consisted of one group with three children, another group with two children; the remaining six children were trained individually. The posttests which were carried out immediately after training ended, showed significant effects of training for decoding speed and an increase of accuracy for several subtests. Follow-up tests carried out three months after the training had ended showed further improvement in decoding speed and an increase in accuracy; several subtests revealed significant effects. The results indicate that the training program is suitable to improve the decoding speed and accuracy of dyslexic elementary school children in 3rd and 4th grade. A transfer of this conclusion to the general dyslexic population, however, is limited due to the small number of participants. A replication of the study with a larger sample of reading disabled children trained in groups of two and three children and a matched control group would therefore seem necessary.
