  abstract  = {The fourth volume in the LAPASEC series (Landau-Paris Studies on the Eighteenth Century), this collection of essays is based on an international conference held in Landau, in June 2014. The symposium united scholars from the United States, Britain, France, Germany, and Spain. The best papers delivered at this occasion were augmented with additional contributions by scholars working on aspects of the (landscape) garden in the long eighteenth century. Focussing on some neglected aspects of the discourse on gardens in the Enlightenment and in early Romanticism, the book systematically unfolds the variety and importance of European garden culture in a comparative perspective. Particular attention is given to the special configuration of discourses concerned with the garden that actually had an impact on writing and planning. This configuration consisted of theory, praxis, and the metaphorical as well as concrete appropriation of both. This is the reason why the book is divided into three parts - the theory of gardens, the garden as utopos and eutopos between Cythera and pleasure garden, and the exotic (non-European) garden and its influence on the Old World. The assessment of the discourse on gardens of the long eighteenth century thus covers a relatively large area. What the three parts have in common is the fact that they focus especially on the rhizomatic connection of the discourses. Partly derived from botany, the idea of the rhizome, further developed and theorized by Deleuze and Guattari, seems to be a concept of thinking that is particularly well suited for the enterprise undertaken in this book. With the present collection of scholarly essays from five countries, the editors hope to make accessible important contemporary research on the garden in the spirit of Voltaire who famously urged his contemporaries: "il faut cultiver notre jardin". This book not only "cultivates" the garden in Voltaire's sense, it also demonstrates how the discourse on the garden affected.},

  abstract  = {Kaum eine Erfindung ver{\"a}nderte die Kriegf{\"u}hrung mehr als das Flugzeug. Vom ersten Motorflug bis zu den ersten Fl{\"a}chenbombardements vergingen nur wenige Jahre. In dieser Zeit richtete sich die englische Luftwaffe konzeptionell anhand ihrer Erfahrungen im Irak aus. Inwieweit pr{\"a}gten die Erfahrungen w{\"a}hrend der Aufstandsbek{\"a}mpfung an der Peripherie des Empire den strategischen Bombenkrieg gegen Deutschland? Es werden die Kampagnen im Irak der 1920er Jahre und der Luftkrieg gegen das »Dritte Reich« betrachtet, die sich in Umfang, Intensit{\"a}t und technischen Rahmenbedingungen zwar erheblich unterschieden. Allerdings bildeten die in beiden Kampagnen eingesetzten Soldaten der RAF das Bindeglied. Mit Hilfe kognitionspsychologischer Methoden und der Analyse von Akteursnetzwerken wird gezeigt, wie die Operationen im Irak die RAF-Offiziere pr{\"a}gten und die Bomberoffensive gegen das Deutsche Reich beeinflussten.},

  abstract  = {Auch in historischer Zeit waren Straßen, Wege und Verkehrsbahnen Orte innovativer Entwicklungen der Technik, der Mobilit{\"a}t sowie der Infrastruktur. Anders als die {\"a}ltere Forschung und popul{\"a}ren Vorstellungen meinen, w{\"a}hrten die Umgestaltungen der Kulturlandschaft seit dem 13. Jahrhundert bemerkenswert lange. Diese »etwas andere« Mittelalter-Geschichte mit ihrer epochen{\"u}bergreifenden Wirkung zeigt in vielen Details die vorliegende Studie. Sie sch{\"o}pft aus den bew{\"a}hrten Methoden der Altweg-, Binnenschifffahrts- und Infrastrukturgeschichtsforschung und entdeckt dabei auf innovative Weise »Straßen im Fluss« als Modell. Mit Blick auf den Verkehrsraum zwischen Elbe und Oder - vom Spreewald {\"u}ber Berlin-C{\"o}lln und Brandenburg an der Havel bis nach Havelberg - gelingt erstmals eine zwischen dem mittelalterlichen Landesausbau und dem 16. Jahrhundert angesiedelte Geschichte der beiden Hauptfl{\"u}sse Spree und Havel sowie ihrer Nebenl{\"a}ufe. Der Autor r{\"u}ckt das Leben der Menschen am und auf dem Fluss ins Licht und beschreibt quellennah, wie vor allem die St{\"a}dte, aber auch geistliche Institutionen wie Domstift oder Kl{\"o}ster an dem Wandel der Kulturlandschaft zu einem mannigfach »vernetzten« Verkehrsraum stark beteiligt waren. Die hier entwickelten Strukturen bew{\"a}hrten sich und besaßen Vorbildcharakter, so dass in sp{\"a}teren Jahrhunderten insbesondere St{\"a}dte an diese mittelalterlichen Verkehrswirtschaftsprojekte ankn{\"u}pften.},

  abstract  = {The patients of the Charité Psychiatry and Neurology clinic (East-Berlin, GDR) during the 1960s are at the center of this study. While taking into account the interpretation provided by the medical discourse, this research aims at reconstructing the experiences and the trajectories of these individuals by inscribing them in the context of the socialist society. Relying on patients' records - these records being the main source of this study - the goal of this research is to reach a better understanding of underlying tensions in the socialist society in relation to the political and ideological context. As these sources show, when they talk to the therapist, patients can speak according to rules which differ from the rules implemented in the socialist society. Because they may contain traces of speeches that would usually be silenced as a result of censorship or self-censorship, or of the unspeakable, shameful or delirious nature of this speech, the patients' records prove to be a valuable source for the historian. From marital tensions caused by ideological disagreements to the inner conflicts of an "ardent marxist", from the pain triggered by the exclusion from the party to the pain caused by the construction of the Berlin Wall, from the "reuniting delirium" to the delusions according to which the West appears as a threat, the individual and singular experiences of the patients allow to reconstruct, through a microhistorical approach, certain tensions inherent to the working of the socialist society.},
