This Thesis is embedded within the general framework of future forest growth under climate change and its implications for the ongoing forest conversion. My objective is to investigate the future forest productivity at different spatial scales (from a single specific forest stand to aggregated information across Germany) with focus on oak-pine forests in the federal state of Brandenburg. The overarching question is: how are the oak-pine forests affected by climate change described by a variety of climate scenarios. I answer this question by using a model based analysis of tree growth processes and responses to different climate scenarios with emphasis on drought events. In addition, a method is developed which considers climate change uncertainty of forest management planning. As a first 'screening' of climate change impacts on forest productivity, I calculated the change in net primary production on the base of a large set of climate scenarios for different tree species and the total area of Germany. Temperature increases up to 3 K lead to positive effects on the net primary production of all selected tree species. But, in water-limited regions this positive net primary production trend is dependent on the length of drought periods which results in a larger uncertainty regarding future forest productivity. One of the regions with the highest uncertainty of net primary production development is the federal state of Brandenburg. To enhance the understanding and ability of model based analysis of tree growth sensitivity to drought stress two water uptake approaches in pure pine and mixed oak-pine stands are contrasted. The first water uptake approach consists of an empirical function for root water uptake. The second approach is more mechanistic and calculates the differences of soil water potential along a soil-plant-atmosphere continuum. I assumed the total root resistance to vary at low, medium and high total root resistance levels. For validation purposes three data sets on different tree growth relevant time scales are used. Results show that, except the mechanistic water uptake approach with high total root resistance, all transpiration outputs exceeded observed values. On the other hand high transpiration led to a better match of observed soil water content. The strongest correlation between simulated and observed annual tree ring width occurred with the mechanistic water uptake approach and high total root resistance. The findings highlight the importance of severe drought as a main reason for small diameter increment, best supported by the mechanistic water uptake approach with high root resistance. However, if all aspects of the data sets are considered no approach can be judged superior to the other. I conclude that the uncertainty of future productivity of water-limited forest ecosystems under changing environmental conditions is linked to simulated root water uptake. Finally my study aimed at the impacts of climate change combined with management scenarios on an oak-pine forest to evaluate growth, biomass and the amount of harvested timber. The pine and the oak trees are 104 and 9 years old respectively. Three different management scenarios with different thinning intensities and different climate scenarios are used to simulate the performance of management strategies which explicitly account for the risks associated with achieving three predefined objectives (maximum carbon storage, maximum harvested timber, intermediate). I found out that in most cases there is no general management strategy which fits best to different objectives. The analysis of variance in the growth related model outputs showed an increase of climate uncertainty with increasing climate warming. Interestingly, the increase of climate-induced uncertainty is much higher from 2 to 3 K than from 0 to 2 K.}, language = {en} } @phdthesis{Papendiek2015, author = {Papendiek, Franka}, title = {Fodder legumes for Green Biorefineries}, url = {http://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:kobv:517-opus4-87198}, school = {Universit{\"a}t Potsdam}, pages = {XI, 111}, year = {2015}, abstract = {Peak oil is forcing our society to shift from fossil to renewable resources. However, such renewable resources are also scarce, and they too must be used in the most efficient and sustainable way possible. Biorefining is a concept that represents both resource efficiency and sustainability. This approach initiates a cascade use, which means food and feed production before material use, and an energy-related use at the end of the value-added chain. However, sustainability should already start in the fields, on the agricultural side, where the industrially-used biomass is produced. Therefore, the aim of my doctoral thesis is to analyse the sustainable feedstock supply for biorefineries. In contrast to most studies on biorefineries, I focus on the sustainable provision of feedstock and not on the bioengineering processing of whatever feedstock is available. Grasslands provide a high biomass potential. They are often inefficiently used, so a new utilisation concept based on the biorefining approach can increase the added value from grasslands. Fodder legumes from temporary and permanent grasslands were chosen for this study. Previous research shows that they are a promising feedstock for industrial uses, and their positive environmental impact is an important byproduct to promote sustainable agricultural production systems. Green Biorefineries are a class of biorefineries that use fresh green biomass, such as grasses or fodder legumes, as feedstock. After fractionation, an organic solution (press juice) forms; this is used for the production of organic acids, chemicals and extracts, as well as fertilisers. A fibre component (press cake) is also created to produce feed, biomaterials and biogas. This thesis examines a specific value chain, using alfalfa and clover/grass as feedstock and generating lactic acid and one type of cattle feed from it. The research question is if biomass production needs to be adapted for the utilisation of fodder legumes in the Green Biorefinery approach. I have attempted to give a holistic analysis of cultivation, processing and utilisation of two specific grassland crops. Field trials with alfalfa and clover/grass at different study sites were carried out to obtain information on biomass quality and quantity depending on the crop, study site and harvest time. The fresh biomass was fractionated with a screw press and the composition of press juices and cakes was analysed. Fermentation experiments took place to determine the usability of press juices for lactic acid production. The harvest time is not of high importance for the quality of press juices as a fermentation medium. For permanent grasslands, late cuts, often needed for reasons of nature conservation, are possible without a major influence on feedstock quality. The press cakes were silaged for feed-value determination. Following evidence that both intermediate products are suitable feedstocks in the Green Biorefinery approach, I developed a cost-benefit analysis, comparing different production scenarios on a farm. Two standard crop rotations for Brandenburg, producing either only market crops or market crops and fodder legumes for ruminant feed production, were compared to a system that uses the cultivated fodder legumes for the Green Biorefinery value chain instead of only feed production. Timely processing of the raw material is important to maintain quality for industrial uses, so on-site processing at the farm is assumed in Green Biorefinery scenario. As a result, more added value stays in the rural area. Two farm sizes, common for many European regions, were chosen to examine the influence of scale. The cost site of farmers has also been analysed in detail to assess which farm characteristics make production of press juices for biochemical industries viable. Results show that for large farm sizes in particular, the potential profits are high. Additionally, the wider spectrum of marketable products generates new sources of income for farmers. The holistic analysis of the supply chain provides evidence that the cultivation processes for fodder legumes do not need to be adapted for use in Green Biorefineries. In fact, the new utilisation approach even widens the cultivation and processing spectrum and can increase economic viability of fodder legume production in conventional farming.}, language = {en} } @article{ZimmermannElsenbeer2008, author = {Zimmermann, Beate and Elsenbeer, Helmut}, title = {Spatial and temporal variability of soil saturated hydraulic conductivity in gradients of disturbance}, issn = {0022-1694}, doi = {10.1016/j.jhydrol.2008.07.027}, year = {2008}, language = {en} } @article{GermerElsenbeerdeMoraes2006, author = {Germer, Sonja and Elsenbeer, Helmut and de Moraes, Jorge M.}, title = {Throughfall and temporal trends of rainfall redistribution in an open tropical rainforest, south-western Amazonia (Rond{\^o}nia, Brazil)}, issn = {1027-5606}, doi = {10.5194/hess-10-383-2006}, year = {2006}, language = {en} } @article{ZimmermannWilckeElsenbeer2007, author = {Zimmermann, Alexander and Wilcke, Wolfgang and Elsenbeer, Helmut}, title = {Spatial and temporal patterns of throughfall quantity and quality in a tropical montane forest in Ecuador}, issn = {0022-1694}, doi = {10.1016/j.jhydrol.2007.06.012}, year = {2007}, language = {en} } @article{SzaramowiczJessel2006, author = {Szaramowicz, Martin and Jessel, Beate}, title = {Regionale Fl{\"a}chenpools in der Praxis}, year = {2006}, language = {de} } @article{BlumensteinVanRensburgKruegeretal.2006, author = {Blumenstein, Oswald and Van Rensburg, L. and Kr{\"u}ger, Wolfgang and Schachtzabel, Hartmut}, title = {Preface}, year = {2006}, language = {en} } @article{SchatzabelMeyer2006, author = {Schatzabel, Hartmut and Meyer, S.}, title = {Reality, system, model, prediction : the modeling approach}, year = {2006}, language = {en} } @article{Jessel2006, author = {Jessel, Beate}, title = {Die Hintert{\"u}r seelischer Bed{\"u}rfnisse : Vertrautheit und Sehnsucht als Motive des Naturschutzes}, isbn = {3-86581-019-5}, year = {2006}, language = {de} } @book{BlumensteinVanRensburgKruegeretal.2006, author = {Blumenstein, Oswald and Van Rensburg, L. and Kr{\"u}ger, Wolfgang and Schachtzabel, Hartmut}, title = {Basics for modelling of heavy metal dynamics in tailing dam systems}, series = {Stoffdynamik in Geosystemen}, volume = {11}, journal = {Stoffdynamik in Geosystemen}, publisher = {Selbstverl. der Arbeitsgruppe Stoffdynamik in Geosystemen}, address = {Potsdam}, issn = {0949-4731}, pages = {109 S.}, year = {2006}, language = {en} } @book{Geldmacher2006, author = {Geldmacher, Karl}, title = {Landschaftsentwicklung und Landnutzungswandel im Pazifischen Nordwesten der USA seit 1850}, series = {Stoffdynamik in Geosystemen}, volume = {12}, journal = {Stoffdynamik in Geosystemen}, publisher = {Selbstverl. der Arbeitsgruppe Stoffdynamik in Geosystemen}, address = {Potsdam}, issn = {0949-4731}, pages = {113 S.}, year = {2006}, language = {de} } @article{BorkGeldmacherRoepkeetal.2006, author = {Bork, Hans-Rudolf and Geldmacher, Karl and R{\"o}pke, Bj{\"o}rn and Schaphoff, Sibyll and Schnur, Tilo and Berdel, Franka and Bork, Helga and Dalchow, Claus and Faust, Berno}, title = {Die goldene Gans wird zu Tode gerupft : Bodenzerst{\"o}rung in der L{\"o}sslandschaft des Palouse (Washington und Idaho, USA)}, isbn = {978-3-89678-584-8}, year = {2006}, language = {de} } @article{BorkGeldmacherSchaphoffetal.2006, author = {Bork, Hans-Rudolf and Geldmacher, Karl and Schaphoff, Sibyll and Dalchow, Claus and Faust, Berno}, title = {Der halbierte Brunnen am East Fork Cottonwood Creek in Oregon (USA)}, isbn = {3-89678-584-2}, year = {2006}, language = {de} } @article{WiggeringDalchowGlemnitzetal.2006, author = {Wiggering, Hubert and Dalchow, Claus and Glemnitz, Michael and Helming, Katharina and M{\"u}ller, Klaus and Schultz, Alfred and Stachow, Ulrich and Zander, Peter}, title = {Indicators for multifunctional land use : linking socio-economic requirements with landscape potentials}, year = {2006}, abstract = {Indicators to assess sustainable land development often focus on either economic or ecologic aspects of landscape use. The concept of multifunctional land use helps merging those two focuses by emphasising on the rule that economic action is per se accompanied by ecological utility: commodity outputs (CO, e.g., yields) are paid for on the market, but non-commodity outputs (NCO, e.g., landscape aesthetics) so far are public goods with no markets. Agricultural production schemes often provided both outputs by joint production, but with technical progress under prevailing economic pressure, joint production increasingly vanishes by decoupling of commodity from non-commodity production. Simultaneously, by public and political awareness of these shortcomings, there appears a societal need or even demand for some non-commodity outputs of land use, which induces a market potential, and thus, shift towards the status of a commodity outputs. An approach is presented to merge both types of output by defining an indicator of social utility (SUMLU): production schemes are considered with respect to social utility of both commodity and non-commodity outputs. Social utility in this sense includes environmental and economic services as long as society expresses a demand for them. For each combination of parameters at specific frame conditions (e.g., soil and climate properties of a landscape) a production possibility curve can reflect trade-offs between commodity and non-commodity outputs. On each production possibility curve a welfare optimum can be identified expressing the highest achievable value of social utility as a trade-off between CO and NCO production. When applying more parameters, a cluster of welfare optimums is generated. Those clusters can be used for assessing production schemes with respect to sustainable land development. Examples of production possibility functions are given on easy applicable parameters (nitrogen leaching versus gross margin) and on more complex ones (biotic integrity). Social utility, thus allows to evaluate sustainability of land development in a cross-sectoral approach with respect to multifunctionality. (C) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. Along continuous forest-savanna transects in the Comoe National Park, the change in the amount and composition of non-woody phytomass was investigated from savanna to forest interior. This was correlated with the cover of vegetation strata above, soil depth, and the occurrence of seasonal surface fires. Phytomass mainly consisted of leaf litter in the forests (about 400 g m(-2) at the end of the rainy season, and about 600 g m(-2) at the end of the dry season) and of grasses in the savanna (about 900 g m(-2)). Low grass biomass appeared to be primarily the result of suppression by competing woody species and not of shallow soil. The occurrence of early dry-season fires seemed to be determined mainly by the amount of grass biomass as fuel because fires occurred in almost all savanna plots while forest sites remained unaffected. However, late dry-season fires will encounter higher amounts of leaf litter raising fire probability in forests. The paper demonstrates how scenario analysis can be applied to investigate the impacts of land use changes and how stakeholder interviews can be used to evaluate the results of the scenarios. The study was carried out in the Havel Basin in the northeast of Germany. "Landscape-ecological spatial units" were derived from similar characteristics of soil and groundwater conditions, ground relief and inundation to enable spatial allocation of potential land use and link different scales when describing possible changes in land use. As a first step, in three sub-catchments of the Havel river (distinguished by different physical characteristics) detailed surveys were carried out to investigate the various interests of the stakeholders. The interviews were used to identify the key problems of each area with respect to water quality and quantity and facilitated stakeholder engagement with the catchment planning issues in the Havel river basin. The information from the stakeholder interviews was used to determine the initial conditions for the land use scenarios which were developed to demonstrate possible changes to land use for achieving better water quality. The land use scenarios also were required as an input into the hydrological modelling of their effects on water quality and to calculate their socio-economic effects. In a second survey the results of the scenarios and the hydrological modelling were presented to the stakeholders. The consultation process identified the priorities of the stakeholders which could then be taken into account when developing management options. In this paper, an attempt was made to determine the CSC with both batch and column experiments. Two types of sediments were tested: (a) homogeneous quartz sand and (b) mineralogically heterogeneous sediment, taken from the Hanford formation in southeast Washington. Stepwise decreasing concentrations of NaNO3 solution were applied until fine particles were released from the sediments and the CSC was determined. Two methods were used to minimize the interference of particle release due to physical forces (shear stress) in the batch experiments: (a) postexperimental correction for mechanical effects, and (b) minimization of shear stress on the sediments during the experiment. CSCs from batch experiments were compared to those obtained from column experiments. It was found that both the amount of particles released and the CSC were an order of magnitude higher for the Hanford sediment than for the Sand. Moreover, particle detachment above the CSC was observed for the Hanford sediment. This suggests that the concept of sharp CSCs could be problematic in natural heterogeneous sediments where fine particles may mobilize at salt concentrations significantly above the CSC, thus unexpectedly enhancing colloid-facilitated transport of contaminants. For that purpose intensive hydrometeorological, hydrogeological and geotechnical observations as well as surveying of surface movement rates were conducted during 1998-2001. Subsurface water dynamics at the creeping slope turned out to be dominated by a three-dimensional pressure system. The pressure reaction is triggered by fast infiltration of surface water and subsequent lateral water flow in the south-western part of the hillslope. The related pressure signal was shown to propagate further downhill, causing fast reactions of the piezometric head at 5.5 m depth on a daily time scale. The observed pressure reactions might belong to a temporary hillslope water body that extends further downhill. The related buoyancy forces could be one of the driving forces for the mass movement. A physically based hydrological model was adopted to model simultaneously surface and subsurface water dynamics including evapotranspiration and runoff production. It was possible to reproduce surface runoff and observed pressure reactions in principle. However, as soil hydraulic functions were only estimated on pedotransfer functions, a quantitative comparison between observed and simulated subsurface dynamics is not feasible. Since 1992, when the Habitats Directive (92/43/EWG) came into effect, all EU member states are obligated to contribute to the establishment of a coherent ecological framework of special protection areas, called Natura 2000. The guideline states both protection objects and protection aims more precisely but its implementation is, to a large extent, left to the member states. In the neighbouring states Germany and France the organisation report strategy, and area management of the Natura 2000 areas differ significantly. Based on these conditions, in both countries two exemplary regions (mountain range and low mountain range) with 3 Natura 2000-areas were selected. In exemplary municipalities the local decision-makers and other relevant activists were interviewed regarding their acceptance of Natura 2000. The results showed altogether a higher acceptance in the 12 German municipalities than in the 12 French but at the same time an extensive insecurity regarding the new obligations on order to implement the protection system. In the French examples the lack of public participation organised by the state government contributed to a reduced acceptance during the first years of the implementation of the Habitats Guideline. Besides, crucial elements for a local acceptance of the Natura 2000 system in both states were the land owners, existing plans and development aims of the municipality, land use and a possibly existing protection status of the area. Additionally the study showed that a transparent establishment of a management plan offers the opportunity to co-ordinate different land use and protection interests. The designation of a separate area co-ordinator for each Natura 2000-area, at the same time contact for the local community like in France, can provide a valuable, confidence-building measure.}, language = {de} } @article{Jessel2004, author = {Jessel, Beate}, title = {Die Integration von Umweltbelangen in die Entscheidungsfindung in der Bauleitplanung}, issn = {0721-7390}, year = {2004}, abstract = {Mit dem zum 20. The underlying philosophy is to use a physically based hydrological model named CATFLOW as a virtual landscape, assuming perfect knowledge of the processes. The model, which in particular conceptualizes preferential flow as threshold process, was developed based on intensive process and parameter studies and has already been successfully applied to simulate flow and transport at different scales and catchments. Study area is the intensively investigated Weiherbach catchment. Numerous replicas of spatially variable initial soil moisture or spatially variable precipitation with the same geostatistical properties are conditioned to observed soil moisture and precipitation data and serve as initial and boundary conditions for the model during repeated simulations. The effect of spatially soil moisture on modeling catchment runoff response was found to depend strongly on average saturation of the catchment. Different realizations of initial soil moisture yielded strongly different hydrographs for intermediate initial soil moisture as well as in dry catchment conditions; in other states the effect was found to be much lower. This is clearly because of the threshold nature of preferential flow as well as the threshold nature of Hortonian production of overland flow. It was shown furthermore that the spatial pattern of a key parameter (macroporosity) that determined threshold behavior is of vast importance for the model response. The estimation of these patterns, which is mostly done based on sparse observations and expert knowledge, is a major source for predictive model uncertainty. Finally, it was shown that the usage of biased, i.e. spatially homogenized precipitation, input during parameter estimation yields a biased model structure, which gives poor results when used with highly distributed input. If spatially highly resolved precipitation was used during model parameter estimation. the predictive uncertainty of the model was clearly reduced. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. The EU Water Framework Directive (WFD) issued different regulations in the context of flodplains although not listing them directly as target areas to be dealt with. This makes clear that flodplains are assed as functional areas and therefore also need concrete requirements for their protection and development from a water management point of view. Additionally measures along rivers and streams necessary to reach the environmental aims of the WFD can result in changed conditions in floodplains. This is illustrated by examples of the Lower HAvel River. This may lead to conflicts with the aims and tasks of nature conservation. Particularly the definition of development aims needs an early identification of agreements and possible conflicts. Therefore the water management authorities have to consider the influence of the floodplains on the condition of the water bodies in an early stage: as soon as reference conditions are described, for the assessment of the risks to achieve the environmental aims as well as for the development of measurement programmes. In this area strategies for the sustainable management of landscape water resources are tested in a development and testing project, funded by the German Federal Agency for Nature Conservation. For monitoring of environmental change, the scientifical accompaniment of the project established a network of gauges, measuring ground water levels, water levels in ditches and in the River Havel itself. Data is gathered in areas that are potentially endangered by flood and areas that are protected by embankments. Until now, data from this network is available for more than two hydrological years since autumn 2001. It shows that water level dynamics are mainly influenced by precipitation and evaporation. Only in areas, which are under the potential influence of floods, ground water levels reach water levels in the river during winter term. In areas that are protected by embankments and additionally drained, surface and ground water levels are actually lower than water levels in the river. Abstract Late Holocene Landscape Development in Western China ; Two Case Studies from Qinghai Province Recent archaeological research results show that an intensive cultural as well as economic exchange took place between Western and South-Eastern China since early Bronze Age. It can be assumed, that the exchange based on comparatively well developed land use activities. Geo-archaeological investigations concerning the environmental impact of Bronze Time land use in Western China are missing so far. Two case studies about the archaeological sites Lajia and Fengtai located in Qinghai Province show, that the creation of economic value based on comparatively intensive land use. The associated clearing of natural vegetation caused disastrous erosion events, which led to the decline of both settlements.}, language = {de} } @article{Bronstert2004, author = {Bronstert, Axel}, title = {Rainfall-runoff modelling for assessing impacts of climate and land-use change}, year = {2004}, language = {en} } @article{Kuehling2004, author = {K{\"u}hling, Matthias}, title = {Heimliche Gesellen - Zipfelfalter in der D{\"o}beritzer Heide : D{\"o}beritzer Heide mit Ferbitzer Bruch}, issn = {1611-2601}, year = {2004}, language = {de} } @article{PepplerLisbachSchroederEsselbach2004, author = {Peppler-Lisbach, Cord and Schr{\"o}der-Esselbach, Boris}, title = {Predicting the species composition of Nardus stricta communities by logistic regression modelling}, year = {2004}, language = {en} } @book{OPUS4-14632, title = {Habitatmodelle : Methodik, Anwendung, Nutzen ; Tagungsband zum Workshop, 8. - 10.
