  abstract  = {Gomułka's harsh criticism of the Stalinist past and the introduction of liberal elements into the public life of Poland was not welcomed by the East German leadership. Ulbricht demanded full support for the sovereignty of the GDR and tried to prevent any independent Polish moves to come to terms with the Federal Republic. The Polish leadership strived towards a closer economic integration with the GDR and Czechoslovakia to foster industrial development in Poland and to bind the East German state more closely into the "socialist camp". These ideas were flatly rejected by the GDR. The level of economic interdependence between the two German states and the advantages of the GDR resulting from the "intra-German" status of trade and transfer of technologies provoked Gomułka's distrust. Relations worsened even more when, towards the end of his time in power, Ulbricht moved towards a rapprochement with the FRG and showed some readiness to question the G{\"o}rlitz treaty on the German-Polish border line.},

The recently launched White Paper represents a new reflection upon Australia's national interests and a soft relativisation of the strong emphasis on regional and multilateral foreign policy performances of former governments. According to a least the author's judgement, the fundamental legacy of Australia's international relations remain: a certain (a definite?) contradiction between the country's predominant cultural and ethnic (!) heritage on the one hand and its geographical location on the other.},

Es geht um die Liebesgeschichte, aber auch den kleinen Machtkampf zwischen einem verwitweten Bauern mit vier Kindern und seiner Haush{\"a}lterin, die f{\"u}r den Geschmack des angehenden Ehemannes zu viel Wert auf {\"A}ußerlichkeiten legt. „Staken und Bretter dienen dazu, das Fassungsverm{\"o}gen eines Leiterwagens zu steigern." Der Ausdruck wird in Baasdorf im {\"u}bertragenen Sinn f{\"u}r Anzeichen eines {\"u}bertriebenen Geltungsbed{\"u}rfnisses gebraucht. Ber{\"u}hmt ist die zu der Erz{\"a}hlung geh{\"o}rende Episode aus der "Baasd{\"o}rper Kr{\"o}nk" wegen des Ausspruchs von Johann-Detlef: „Dar fohrt Puls [hier: Thun] mit Tante l{\"a}ngs." (Kr{\"o}nk, S. 67, Staken und Bretter, S. 8). In der "Kr{\"o}nk" folgen sprachsoziologisch interessante Ausf{\"u}hrungen des Erz{\"a}hlers zu den vier Gr{\"u}nden, warum der Ausspruch von Johann-Detlef, der die Geziertheit der Haush{\"a}lterin parodiert, im Dorf zu einem Lacherfolg wird. Nach Baasdorfer Meinung heißt es „f{\"o}hrt" und nicht „fahrt", außerdem „lang" und nicht „l{\"a}ngs". Zu allem {\"U}berfluss l{\"a}sst sich die Haush{\"a}lterin von den Kindern „Tante" nennen, „wat ok dumm T{\"u}{\"u}ch weer" und schließlich nennt sie Hansj{\"o}rn Puls (hier: Ehler Thun) beim Nachnamen. Johann-Detlef macht also mit seinem Spott mobil gegen die Haush{\"a}lterin, denn der Gebrauch des Hochdeutschen wird in Baasdorf als ein Zeichen von Hochn{\"a}sigkeit gewertet: „So'n L{\"o}, de - mit een Woort geseggt - {\"u}mmer h{\"o}ger schieten w{\"u}llt, as se den Mors hebbt, de nehmt wi erst mal en betjen in'e Maak; de m{\"o}{\"o}t erstmal wat {\"u}mlehren." (Kr{\"o}nk, S. 67). In der "Kr{\"o}nk" geht der sich sp{\"a}ter fortsetzende eheliche Kampf um „Staken und Bretter" anders und weniger harmonisch aus als in der Erz{\"a}hlung.},

  abstract  = {In the last two years, CS as a school subject has gained a lot of attention worldwide, although different countries have differing approaches to and experiences of introducing CS in schools. This paper reports on a study comparing current trends in CS at school, with a major focus on two countries, Germany and UK. A survey was carried out of a number of teaching professionals and experts from the UK and Germany with regard to the content and delivery of CS in school. An analysis of the quantitative data reveals a difference in foci in the two countries; putting this into the context of curricular developments we are able to offer interpretations of these trends and suggest ways in which curricula in CS at school should be moving forward.},

  abstract  = {National Action Plans (NAPs) have been increas-ingly adopted world-wide after the Vienna Dec-laration in 1993, where it was urged to consider the improvement and promotion of Human Rights. In this paper, we discuss their usefulness and success by analysing the challenges present-ed during NAP processes as well as the benefits this set of actions entails: The challenges for their implementation outweigh its actual benefits. Nevertheless, NAPs have great potential. Based on new research, we elaborate a set of recom-mendations for improving the design and imple-mentation of national action planning. In order to effectively bring NAP into practice, we consider it crucial to plan and analyse every state local circumstances in detail. The latter is important, since the implementation of a concrete set of actions is intended to directly transform and improve the local living conditions of the people. In a long-term perspective, we defend the benefit of NAP's implementation for complying obliga-tions set up by HR treaties.},

Three methods based on a power relationship between rainfall amount and erosivity were then applied to estimate event and daily rainfall erosivities from the respective rainfall amounts. A test of the resulting regression equations against an independent data set proved all three methods equally adequate in predicting rainfall erosivity from daily rainfall amount. We recommend the Richardson model for testing in the Amazon Basin, and its use with the coefficient from La Cuenca in western Amazonia.},

  abstract  = {We examined individual differences in masked repetition priming by re-analyzing item-level response-time (RT) data from three experiments. Using a linear mixed model (LMM) with subjects and items specified as crossed random factors, the originally reported priming and word-frequency effects were recovered. In the same LMM, we estimated parameters describing the distributions of these effects across subjects. Subjects' frequency and priming effects correlated positively with each other and negatively with mean RT. These correlation estimates, however, emerged only with a reciprocal transformation of RT (i.e., -1/RT), justified on the basis of distributional analyses. Different correlations, some with opposite sign, were obtained (1) for untransformed or logarithmic RTs or (2) when correlations were computed using within-subject analyses. We discuss the relevance of the new results for accounts of masked priming, implications of applying RT transformations, and the use of LMMs as a tool for the joint analysis of experimental effects and associated individual differences.},

  abstract  = {Informatics as a school subject has been virtually absent from bilingual education programs in German secondary schools. Most bilingual programs in German secondary education started out by focusing on subjects from the field of social sciences. Teachers and bilingual curriculum experts alike have been regarding those as the most suitable subjects for bilingual instruction - largely due to the intercultural perspective that a bilingual approach provides. And though one cannot deny the gain that ensues from an intercultural perspective on subjects such as history or geography, this benefit is certainly not limited to social science subjects. In consequence, bilingual curriculum designers have already begun to include other subjects such as physics or chemistry in bilingual school programs. It only seems a small step to extend this to informatics. This paper will start out by addressing potential benefits of adding informatics to the range of subjects taught as part of English-language bilingual programs in German secondary education. In a second step it will sketch out a methodological (= didactical) model for teaching informatics to German learners through English. It will then provide two items of hands-on and tested teaching material in accordance with this model. The discussion will conclude with a brief outlook on the chances and prerequisites of firmly establishing informatics as part of bilingual school curricula in Germany.},

It shows how he opposed the assumption that the United States' social order was based on a "Judeo-Christian tradition." By constructing pluralism as a civil religion and carving out space for secular self-understandings in midcentury America, Kallen attempted to preserve the integrity of his earlier political visions, developed during World War I, of pluralist societies in the United States and Palestine within an internationalist global order. While his perspective on the State of Israel was largely shaped by his American experiences, he revised his approach to politically functionalizing religious traditions as he tested his American understanding of a secular, pluralist society against the political theology effective in the State of Israel. The trajectory of Kallen's thought points to fundamental questions about the compatibility of American and Israeli understandings of religion's function in society and its relation to political belonging, especially in light of their transnational connection through American Jewish support for the recently established state.},

  abstract  = {How does a shared lexicon arise in population of agents with differing lexicons, and how can this shared lexicon be maintained over multiple generations? In order to get some insight into these questions we present an ALife model in which the lexicon dynamics of populations that possess and lack metacommunicative interaction (MCI) capabilities are compared. We ran a series of experiments on multi-generational populations whose initial state involved agents possessing distinct lexicons. These experiments reveal some clear differences in the lexicon dynamics of populations that acquire words solely by introspection contrasted with populations that learn using MCI or using a mixed strategy of introspection and MCI. The lexicon diverges at a faster rate for an introspective population, eventually collapsing to one single form which is associated with all meanings. This contrasts sharply with MCI capable populations in which a lexicon is maintained, where every meaning is associated with a unique word. We also investigated the effect of increasing the meaning space and showed that it speeds up the lexicon divergence for all populations irrespective of their acquisition method.},

  abstract  = {Im neunten Band der Reihe geht Ansgar Martins kabbalistischen Spuren in der Philosophie Theodor W. Adornos (1903-1969) nach. Der Frankfurter Gesellschaftskritiker griff im Rahmen seines radikalen materialistischen Projekts gleichwohl auch auf ‚theologische' Deutungsfiguren zur{\"u}ck. Vermittelt durch den gemeinsamen Freund Walter Benjamin (1892-1940) stieß Adorno dabei auf das Werk des Kabbala-Forschers Gershom Scholem (1897-1982). Zwischen Frankfurt und Jerusalem entwickelte sich eine lebenslange Korrespondenz. F{\"u}r Adorno erscheint vor dem Hintergrund l{\"u}ckenloser kapitalistischer Vergesellschaftung jede religi{\"o}se Sinngebung in der Moderne als unm{\"o}glich. Der Tradition der j{\"u}dischen Mystik schreibt er hingegen eine innere Affinit{\"a}t zu dieser hoffnungslosen Logik des ‚Verfalls' zu. Sie scheint ihm zur unumg{\"a}nglichen S{\"a}kularisierung religi{\"o}ser Gehalte aufzufordern. Adornos kabbalistische Marginalien beziehen einen breiten Horizont j{\"u}disch-messianischer Ideen ein. Er verleugnet dabei nie, dass es ihm um eine sehr diesseite Verwirklichung geoffenbarter Heilsversprechen zu tun ist: Transzendenz sei als erf{\"u}llte Immanenz, als verwirklichte Utopie zu denken. In diesem Anliegen sieht Adorno selbst jedoch gerade seine {\"U}bereinstimmung mit der Kabbala. Adornos kabbalistische Motive, die auf Scholems Forschungen zur{\"u}ckgehen, werden hier ausf{\"u}hrlich an seinen Schriften und Vorlesungen untersucht. In seinem Verst{\"a}ndnis der philosophischen Tradition sowie im Modell der Metaphysischen Erfahrung suchte er etwa explizit Anschluss an Deutungen der Kabbala: Das unerreichbare Urbild der Philosophie sei die Interpretation der geoffenbarten Schrift. Wie s{\"a}kularisierte heilige Texte wurden Werke von Beethoven, Goethe, Kafka oder Sch{\"o}nberg so zum Anlass f{\"u}r ‚mystische' Interpretationen. We critically test our predictions against a range of observed massloss rates - in light of the recent discussions on wind clumping. We also present a model to compute the clumping-induced polarimetric variability of hot stars and we compare this with observations of Luminous Blue Variables, for which polarimetric variability is larger than for O and Wolf-Rayet stars. Luminous Blue Variables comprise an ideal testbed for studies of wind clumping and wind geometry, as well as for wind strength calculations, and we propose they may be direct supernova progenitors.},

  abstract  = {The optical density of human macular pigment was measured for 50 observers ranging in age from 10 to 90 years. The psychophysical method required adjusting the radiance of a 1°, monochromatic light (400-550 nm) to minimize flicker (15 Hz) when presented in counterphase with a 460 nm standard. This test stimulus was presented superimposed on a broad-band, short-wave background. Macular pigment density was determined by comparing sensitivity under these conditions for the fovea, where macular pigment is maximal, and 5° temporally. This difference spectrum, measured for 12 observers, matched Wyszecki and Stiles's standard density spectrum for macular pigment. To study variation in macular pigment density for a larger group of observers, measurements were made at only selected spectral points (460, 500 and 550 nm). The mean optical density at 460 nm for the complete sample of 50 subjects was 0.39. Substantial individual differences in density were found (ca. 0.10-0.80), but this variation was not systematically related to age.},

Historians have similarly cast the kinds of Judaism Americans created as both unique to America and uniquely American. These characterizations are accurate to an extent. The authors counsel strongly against scare mongering and short-term symbolic politics. Any attempt to deal with the complex problem of terrorism has to include long-term political and social policies aimed at the reduction of conflict and sources of political extremism in the Middle Eastern region.   abstract  = {We launched an original large-scale experiment concerning informatics learning in French high schools. We are using the France-IOI platform to federate resources and share observation for research. The first step is the implementation of an adaptive hypermedia based on very fine grain epistemic modules for Python programming learning. We define the necessary traces to be built in order to study the trajectories of navigation the pupils will draw across this hypermedia. It may be browsed by pupils either as a course support, or an extra help to solve the list of exercises (mainly for algorithmics discovery). By leaving the locus of control to the learner, we want to observe the different trajectories they finally draw through our system. These trajectories may be abstracted and interpreted as strategies and then compared for their relative efficiency. Our hypothesis is that learners have different profiles and may use the appropriate strategy accordingly. This paper presents the research questions, the method and the expected results.},

Since the conceptual model of a relational database is often specified as an entity-relationship (ER) model, we propose to use the ER model to generate a complete implementation in the declarative programming language Curry. This implementation contains operations to create and manipulate entities of the data model, supports authentication, authorization, session handling, and the composition of individual operations to user processes. Furthermore and most important, the implementation ensures the consistency of the database w.r.t. the data dependencies specified in the ER model, i.e., updates initiated by the user cannot lead to an inconsistent state of the database. In order to generate a high-level declarative implementation that can be easily adapted to individual customer requirements, the framework exploits previous works on declarative database programming and web user interface construction in Curry.},

  abstract  = {In this paper, we discuss the design and implementation of our first version of the database "ANNIS" ("ANNotation of Information Structure"). For research based on empirical data, ANNIS provides a uniform environment for storing this data together with its linguistic annotations. A central database promotes standardized annotation, which facilitates interpretation and comparison of the data. ANNIS is used through a standard web browser and offers tier-based visualization of data and annotations, as well as search facilities that allow for cross-level and cross-sentential queries. The paper motivates the design of the system, characterizes its user interface, and provides an initial technical evaluation of ANNIS with respect to data size and query processing.},

  abstract  = {Christian (von) Rother, Chef der Preußischen Seehandlung 1820-1848, ist vermutlich die pr{\"a}gendste Gestalt der Institution im 19. Jahrhundert. Seine Lebensgeschichte als Sohn eines schlesischen Bauern zeugt von sozialem Aufstieg und einer eindrucksvollen Beamtenkarriere. Rother formte die Seehandlung zu einem Konglomerat von gewerblichen Unternehmen, die durch Bankengesch{\"a}fte, Chausseebauprogramme und das Engagement des Staates in der Wirtschaftsf{\"o}rderung leistungsstark gemacht werden sollten. Der Erfolg blieb allerdings unterschiedlich. In den 1840er Jahren stießen diese Bem{\"u}hungen dar{\"u}ber hinaus auf Kritik von unternehmerischen Konkurrenten. Bleibende Bedeutung behauptete eine von Rother gegr{\"u}ndete soziale Einrichtung, die in Berlin ans{\"a}ssige Rother-Stiftung f{\"u}r arme und unverheiratete T{\"o}chter von Beamten und Offizieren.},
