  abstract  = {In terms of historiographical potential and literary value, depictions of the lives of others are considered inferior to autobiographies. One finds autobiographies, which promise to provide exclusive insights into the historical inner worlds, epistemically more revealing. While their study has become a very important part of Jewish Studies, investigations into the life stories of others represent a notable research gap. This issue takes this remarkable bias in the perception of the two genres within Jewish Studies as its starting point. The contributions gathered here interrogate historical examples of biographical narrative with the aim of unlocking its historiographical potentials and thus highlighting the relevance of biographical writing for the study of Jewish cultures.},

  abstract  = {Transcripts of repair and/or problem handling sequences from natural conversations are presented and analyzed with special reference to the role of intonation in the interactive organization of these sequences. It is shown that (a) in the initiation of so-called repair or local problem handling sequences, intonation is used as a type-distinctive device, and (b) in the handling of a global problem handling sequence, intonation is systematically used as a means to constitute and control participant cooperation. In general, intonation is analyzed as one contextualization cue cooccurring with specific syntactic, semantic and discourse organizational devices to signal the status of an utterance in conversational context. It is hypothesized that especially in the global problem handling sequence, different categories of intonation, i.e. different accent and contour types, are systematically used to signal and control participants' interactive problem handling in different, indexically relevant ways simultaneously.},

During sentence interpretation, especially unambiguous accusative and dative case markers (den 'the-ACC' and dem 'the-DAT') weaken the N1-bias and help building up sentence interpretation strategies on the basis of morphological cues. Still, the N1-bias prevails beyond the age of five (Brandt et al. 2016, Cristante 2016, Dittmar et al. 2008) and remains until puberty (Lidzba et al. 2013). This paper investigates whether prototypical case-animacy coalitions (denACC + N INANIMATE and demDAT + N ANIMATE ) strengthen a morphologically based sentence interpretation strategy in German. The experiment discussed in this paper tests for effects of such case-animacy coalitions in mono- and bilingual primary school children. 20 German monolinguals, 12 Dutch-German and 17 Russian-German bilinguals with a mean age of 9;6 were tested in a forced-choice off-line experiment. Results indicate that case-animacy coalitions weaken the N1-bias in OVS-conditions in German monolinguals and Dutch-German bilinguals, while no effects were found for Russian-German bilinguals. Together with an analysis of individual differences, these group-specific effects are discussed in terms of a developmental approach that represents a gradual cue strength adjustment process in mono- and bilingual children.},

  abstract  = {Linking elements in German are generally assumed to have developed either from suffixes indicating the genitive singular or from plural markers. In this paper it is argued that only the linking element -(e)s- evolved from an inflectional suffix, that of the genitive case, but not the syllabic linking elements -e-, -er- and -(e)n- homophonous with plural markers. For these linking elements the explanation is doubtful for a number of reasons. The present paper proposes an alternative explanation for the development of such interfixes, according to which both linking elements and plural markers have been grammaticalized from the same old Indo-European stem suffixes which indicated the declension class of the noun.. Their homophony is due to the fact that they both evolved from the same source. After the decline of the original endings, the indicators of moribund inflectional classes became afunctional 'junc' and were then reanalysed either as plural markers or as linking elements. This development of linking elements can thus be shown as a case of exaptation or regrammaticalization.},

  abstract  = {According to Haider (2010), we have to distinguish three types of infinitival complements in Present-Day German: (i) CP complements, (ii) VP complements and (iii) verbal clusters. While CP complements give rise to biclausal structures, VP complements and verbal clusters indicate a monoclausal structure. Non-finite verbs in verbal clusters build a syntactic unit with the governing verb. It is only the last infinitival pattern that we address as a so-called coherent infinitival pattern, a notion introduced in the influential work of Bech (1955/57). Verbal clusters are bound to languages with an OV grammar, hence the well-known differences regarding infinitival syntax in German and English (Haider 2003, Bobaljik 2004). On the widespread assumption that German has been an OV language throughout its history (Axel 2007), we expect all three types of infinitival complements to be present from the earliest attestions of German.},

Als Ans{\"a}tze interlingualer Textanalyse stellt er das bi-bzw. multilaterale Verfahren, das ein {\"u}bereinzelsprachliches tertium comparationis voraussetzt, dem meist praktikableren unilateralen Verfahren gegen{\"u}ber, das ausgehend von den Merkmalen einer Textsorte einer Sprache diejenigen Mittel zu erfassen sucht, die bei vergleichbaren Texten in einer anderen Sprache verwendet werden. An Ebenen des Vergleichs werden anhand von Beispielen die Architektonik (formaler Aufbau), die Komposition (aktionaler und semantischer Gehalt) und formulative Aspekte besprochen, bei denen die Bedeutung von Formulierungsstereotypen hervorgehoben wird.   abstract  = {Besides their function as one of the main contact points, websites of hospitals serve as medical information portals. All patients should be able to understand medical information texts; regardless of their literacy skills and educational level. Online texts should thus have an appropriate structure to ease their comprehension. Patient information texts on every German nonuniversity ENT hospital website (n = 125) were systematically analysed. For ten different ENT topics a representative medical information text was extracted from each website. Using objective text parameters and five established readability indices, the texts were analysed in terms of their readability and structure. Furthermore, we stratified the analysis in relation to the hospital organisation system and geographical region in Germany. Texts from 142 internet sites could be used for the definite analysis. On average, texts consisted of 15 sentences and 237 words. Readability indices congruously showed that the analysed texts could generally only be understood by a well-educated or even academic reader. The majority of patient information texts on German hospital websites are difficult to understand for most patients. In order to fulfil their goal of adequately informing the general population about disease, therapeutic options and the particular focal points of the clinic, a revision of most medical texts on the websites of German ENT hospitals is recommended.},

  abstract  = {Language can strongly influence the emotional state of the recipient. In contrast to the broad body of experimental and neuroscientific research on semantic information and prosodic speech, the emotional impact of grammatical structure has rarely been investigated. One reason for this might be, that measuring effects of syntactic structure involves the use of complex stimuli, for which the emotional impact of grammar is difficult to isolate. In the present experiment we examined the emotional impact of structural parallelisms, that is, repetitions of syntactic features, on the emotion-sensitive "late positive potential" (LPP) with a cross-modal priming paradigm. Primes were auditory presented nonsense sentences which included grammatical-syntactic parallelisms. Visual targets were positive, neutral, and negative faces, to be classified as emotional or non-emotional by the participants. Electrophysiology revealed diminished LPP amplitudes for positive faces following parallel primes. Thus, our findings suggest that grammatical structure creates an emotional context that facilitates processing of positive emotional information.},

  abstract  = {In this chapter, the author argues that Herder's theory of sympathy is informed by his educational practices as a teacher and preacher in Riga (1764 to 1769). In his Riga sermons, Herder develops a model of sympathy that transforms classical rhetorics insofar as it describes the sermon as a mutual interaction between preacher and congregation, thus emphasizing the decisive role of the listening public. This model is informed not only by Herder's theological, but also by his anthropological and aesthetic reflections in the Riga constellation: Sermon and service are conceptualized as the ideal sphere of observing the 'modus operandi' of human feeling and cognition—and of cultivating it at the same time. Within the overarching framework of sympathy, the preacher has to develop specific techniques of "pathos" to activate the senses of his audience and particular ways of empathy to understand its feelings. Most explicitly, Herder develops this model of preaching in his farewell-sermon from Riga in 1769. At the same time, this sermon shows that homiletics are embedded within the specific social and cultural milieus that Herder encounters in German and Latvian congregations in Riga. Last but not least, his farewell-sermon is a medium to defend himself and his concept of preaching against antipathy-driven attacks from local Orthodox-Lutheran clergy.},

  abstract  = {Multilingualism and the alternate history genre have something in common: both phenomena are based on the construction of alternatives, in the case of multilingualism on the alternatives between different languages and communication systems, and in the case of the alternate history genre on the alternatives between real-world facts and the variation thereof within fictional worlds. This article investigates the interconnections between these two forms of thinking in alternatives by looking specifically at Quentin Tarantino's counterfactual war film Inglourious Basterds (2009) and Christian Kracht's alternate history novel Ich werde hier sein im Sonnenschein und im Schatten (2008). I argue that the consideration of language alternatives forms part of the meta-reflection of the alternate history genre in these works while at the same time opening up a political perspective: in Tarantino's film and Kracht's novel, multilingualism serves as a means for the critique of ideology by rendering palpable the political threats of a worldview based on clear-cut alternatives. In the article's final section, I plead for the establishment of stronger links between the research on literary multilingualism and the theory of fiction.},

  abstract  = {Die vorliegende Masterarbeit hat in einer Einstellungsstudie untersucht, welchen Einfluss Einstellungen gegen{\"u}ber sprachlichen Variet{\"a}ten und gegen{\"u}ber der wahrgenommenen ethnischen Herkunft von Sprecher*innen auf die Leistungsbewertung von Schulaufs{\"a}tzen haben. In Anlehnung an die Debatte um Sprachideologien wurden Einstellungen gegen{\"u}ber den sprachlichen Variet{\"a}ten Kiezdeutsch und dominantes Deutsch sowie, aufbauend auf Studien zur Wahrnehmung von sozialer Information {\"u}ber Sprecher*innen, Einstellungen gegen{\"u}ber t{\"u}rkisch und deutsch markierten Vornamen miteinander verglichen. 157 Lehramtsstudierenden der Universit{\"a}t Potsdam wurde je ein fiktiver Schulaufsatz vorgelegt, der die jeweiligen Einstellungsobjekte sprachliche Variet{\"a}t und ethnisch markierter Vorname enthielt. Durch einen Vergleich der individuellen Leistungsbewertung der Aufs{\"a}tze wurde untersucht, welche Unterschiede sich im schulischen Kontext in der Bewertung und damit der Einstellung gegen{\"u}ber bestimmten Sprecher*innen und ihrem Sprachgebrauch feststellen ließen. Die Studie ergab, dass in den fiktiven Schulaufs{\"a}tzen Kiezdeutsch st{\"a}rker sanktioniert wurde als dominantes Deutsch. Dieses Ergebnis konnte verst{\"a}rkt beobachtet werden, wenn der Schulaufsatz vermeintlich von einer*m Sprecher*in mit t{\"u}rkisch markiertem Vornamen stammte. Die Ergebnisse der Studie lassen vermuten, dass eine Bewertung von Sch{\"u}ler*innen von einer Vorstellung dar{\"u}ber abh{\"a}ngt, wie weit oder nah entfernt der oder die betreffende Sch{\"u}ler*in zur sprachlichen und sozialen Norm steht.},
