This paper looks into the history of German: Common knowledge has it that both the use of verbal mood as well as the quality of clause linkage undergo considerable changes giving rise to the question how these changes affect the manifestations of indirect reported speech in earlier stages of German. The historical record of the 16th century (with an outlook on the 17th century) shows that the distinction between direct and indirect reported speech is not yet grammaticalized in historical sources at the time. In particular with respect to dependent (in)direct reported speech, both types prefer V2-complements with only verbal mood differentiating between the types. Although present and past subjunctive have a much wider distribution in earlier stages of German, the occurrence of free indirect speech likewise testifies to its increasing use as a marker of indirect reported speech. The growing conventionalization of patterns of indirect reported speech in the course of Early Modern German may be considered as an example for an increase of subjectification in its development.}, language = {de} } @misc{OPUS4-44332, title = {The Diachrony of Infinitival Patterns}, series = {Journal of Historical Linguistics}, volume = {2015}, journal = {Journal of Historical Linguistics}, number = {5.1}, editor = {Demske, Ulrike and Jędrzejowski, Łukasz}, publisher = {Benjamins}, address = {Amsterdam}, issn = {2210-2116 print}, doi = {10.1075/jhl.5.1}, pages = {174}, year = {2015}, abstract = {According to Haider (2010), we have to distinguish three types of infinitival complements in Present-Day German: (i) CP complements, (ii) VP complements and (iii) verbal clusters. While CP complements give rise to biclausal structures, VP complements and verbal clusters indicate a monoclausal structure. Non-finite verbs in verbal clusters build a syntactic unit with the governing verb. It is only the last infinitival pattern that we address as a so-called coherent infinitival pattern, a notion introduced in the influential work of Bech (1955/57). Verbal clusters are bound to languages with an OV grammar, hence the well-known differences regarding infinitival syntax in German and English (Haider 2003, Bobaljik 2004). Because the spelling of some word forms can differ between texts, a language model trained on already annotated treebanks may fail to recognize known word forms due to differences in spelling. In the present work, we explore the feasibility of an unsupervised method for spelling-adjustment for the purpose of improved part of speech (POS) tagging. In order to address this question, the paper brings together linguistic observations on tense semantics and a literary analysis of >Wilhalm von Wenden< by Ulrich von Etzenbach. It shows that the present tense can refer to three different kinds of >now<, i. e. the >discourse now<, the >story now<, and the >recipient's now<. In all three contexts, the present tense is not used as a narrative tense but rather indicates a speaker's voice commenting on the events. This leads to the hypothesis that the development of the >narrative present< (as common in modern novels) is based on two requirements: The decoupling between the >discourse now< and the diegetic world as well as the decoupling between the author and the fictional instance of the narrator.}, language = {de} } @article{Philipowski2020, author = {Philipowski, Katharina}, title = {„Wer sich selbst erniedrigt, will erh{\"o}ht werden."}, series = {Zeitschrift f{\"u}r deutsches Altertum und deutsche Literatur (ZfdA), Beihefte = Rudolf von Ems : Beitr{\"a}ge zu Autor, Werk und {\"U}berlieferung / K{\"o}ssinger, Norbert; Manuwald, Henrike; M{\"u}ller, Stephan (Hrsg.)}, journal = {Zeitschrift f{\"u}r deutsches Altertum und deutsche Literatur (ZfdA), Beihefte = Rudolf von Ems : Beitr{\"a}ge zu Autor, Werk und {\"U}berlieferung / K{\"o}ssinger, Norbert; Manuwald, Henrike; M{\"u}ller, Stephan (Hrsg.)}, number = {29}, editor = {Krotz, Elke and K{\"o}ssinger, Norbert and Manuwald, Henrike and M{\"u}ller, Stephan}, publisher = {Hirtzel}, address = {Stuttgart}, isbn = {978-3-7776-2679-6}, pages = {63 -- 88}, year = {2020}, language = {de} } @article{Philipowski2019, author = {Philipowski, Katharina}, title = {Minne und Sang in lyrischen und narrativen Texten: Minnes{\"a}ngerballaden, Neithart Fuchs und Wartburgkrieg}, series = {S{\"a}ngerliebe - S{\"a}ngerkrieg : lyrische Narrative im {\"a}sthetischen Ged{\"a}chtnis des Mittelalters und der Neuzeit}, journal = {S{\"a}ngerliebe - S{\"a}ngerkrieg : lyrische Narrative im {\"a}sthetischen Ged{\"a}chtnis des Mittelalters und der Neuzeit}, editor = {Kropik, Cordula and Immer, Nikolas}, publisher = {Lang}, address = {Berlin}, isbn = {978-3-631-77211-9}, pages = {35 -- 64}, year = {2019}, language = {de} } @article{Philipowski2018, author = {Philipowski, Katharina}, title = {Die deiktische Poetik des Pr{\"a}sens, oder: Wie das ‚jetzt' ein ‚hier' erschafft}, series = {Narratologie und mittelalterliches Erz{\"a}hlen.
