  abstract  = {Reversible assembly of the V0V1 holoenzyme from V-0 and V-1 subcomplexes is a widely used mechanism for regulation of vacuolar-type H+-ATPases (V-ATPases) in animal cells. in the blowfly (Calliphora vicina) salivary gland, V- ATPase is located in the apical membrane of the secretory cells and energizes the secretion of a KCl-rich saliva in response to the hormone serotonin. We have examined whether the CAMP pathway, known to be activated by serotonin, controls V-ATPase assembly and activity. Fluorescence measurements of pH changes at the luminal surface of isolated glands demonstrate that CAMP, Sp-adenosine-3',5'-cyclic monophosphorothioate, or forskolin, similar to serotonin, cause V-ATPase-dependent luminal acidification. In addition, V-ATPase-dependent ATP hydrolysis increases upon treatment with these agents. Immunofluorescence microscopy and pelleting assays have demonstrated further that V, components become translocated from the cytoplasm to the apical membrane and V-ATPase holoenzymes are assembled at the apical membrane during conditions that increase intracellular cAMP. Because these actions occur without a change in cytosolic Ca2+, our findings suggest that the cAMP pathway mediates the reversible assembly and activation of V-ATPase molecules at the apical membrane upon hormonal stimulus},

Die vorliegende Studie {\"u}berpr{\"u}ft die Validit{\"a}t des autobiographischen Ged{\"a}chtnisses anhand der Daten einer prospektiven epidemiologischen L{\"a}ngsschnittstudie, die in vier Untersuchungswellen 399 achtj{\"a}hrige Kinder bis zum Alter von 25 Jahren begleitete. Im Alter von 25 Jahren wurden die Erinnerungsleistungen der Probanden an Kernfakten, Erziehungsstil der Eltern, eigene psychische Probleme sowie Lebensereignisse aus Kindheit und Jugend mit Hilfe eines voll strukturierten Fragebogens erhoben. Mit Ausnahme der Kernfakten waren die Erinnerungsleistungen durchweg schlecht, intelligente Probanden zeigten insgesamt bessere Erinnerungsleistungen, junge Erwachsene mit psychischen St{\"o}rungen berichteten vermehrt auch fr{\"u}her nicht vorhandene Symptome. Die retrospektive Erfassung fr{\"u}herer Lebensereignisse, der Beziehung zu den Eltern und psychischer Auff{\"a}lligkeiten im Rahmen von Risikostudien und klinischen Studien ist sehr bedenklich.   abstract  = {Die in Deutschland gegenw{\"a}rtig durch N{\"a}hrstoffeintr{\"a}ge und ausbleibenden N{\"a}hrstoffentzug stark im R{\"u}ckgang begriffenen Flechten-Kiefernw{\"a}lder werden als Biotoptyp wie auch als Lebensraumtyp "Mitteleurop{\"a}ische Flechten-Kiefernw{\"a}lder" (Code 91T0) diskutiert. Die bisherige, sehr uneinheitliche Differenzierung von Flechten-Kiefernw{\"a}ldern auf der Ebene von Biotoptypen wird dargestellt. Auf der Grundlage neuerer vegetationskundlicher {\"u}bersichten werden Vorschl{\"a}ge f{\"u}r eine einheitliche Abgrenzung des Biotoptyps "Flechten-Kiefernwald" und des Lebensraumtyps 91T0 unterbreitet. Im nieders{\"a}chsischen Naturwaldreservat "Kaarßer Sandberge" (Niedersachsen) wurde die Anwendung des Konzeptes erfolgreich erprobt. Nicht nur hier, sondern auch deutschlandweit wird der R{\"u}ckgang der Erdflechten in den Kieferw{\"a}ldern zugunsten von Drahtschmiele und/ oder pleurokarpen Moosen deutlich. Nach der derzeitigen Definition des Lebensraumtyps 91T0 besteht auf der Grundlage der FFH-Richtlinie nicht f{\"u}r alle Flechten-Kiefernw{\"a}lder eine Chance der Verbesserung. Der Ausschluss von außerhalb des nat{\"u}rlichen Verbreitungsgebietes der Wald-Kiefer gelegenen sowie von durch Aufforstung angepflanzten Best{\"a}nden bringt Probleme mit sich, die diskutiert werden. F{\"u}r den Erhalt und die Wiederherstellung der gr{\"o}ßtenteils nutzungsbedingt entstandenen Flechten-Kiefernw{\"a}lder sind praktikable Pflegemaßnahmen notwendig, die im Rahmen von Streunutzungsversuchen erprobt werden m{\"u}ssen.},

  abstract  = {Near edge X-ray absorption. ne structure and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy have been employed to follow the reversible trans to cis isomerization of tetra-tert-butyl-azobenzene (TBA) adsorbed on Au(111). For one monolayer the molecules adopt an adsorption geometry characteristic of the trans-TBA isomer. The azo-bridge (N = N) is aligned nearly parallel to the surface and the phenyl rings exhibit a planar orientation with a small tilt angle <= 4 degrees with respect to the surface normal. Illumination of the molecular layer at 455 nm triggers the trans to cis isomerization which is associated with a pronounced change of the geometrical and electronic structure. The N1s to pi* transition of the central azo-bridge shifts by 0.45 +/- 0.05 eV to higher photon energy and the transition dipole moment (TDM) is tilted by 59 +/- 5 degrees with respect to the surface normal. The pi-system of one phenyl ring is tilted by about 30 degrees with respect to the surface normal, while the second ring plane is oriented nearly perpendicular to the surface. This reorientation is supported by a shift and broadening of the C-H resonances associated with the tert-butyl legs of the molecule. These findings support a configuration of the photo-switched TBA molecule on Au(111) which is comparable to the cis-isomer of the free molecule. In the photo-stationary state 53 +/- 5\% of the TBA molecules are switched to the cis configuration. Thermal activation induces the back reaction to trans-TBA.},

  abstract  = {We present a new autoclave that enables in situ characterization of hydrothermal fluids at high pressures and high temperatures at synchrotron x-ray radiation sources. The autoclave has been specifically designed to enable x-ray absorption spectroscopy in fluids with applications to mineral solubility and element speciation analysis in hydrothermal fluids in complex compositions. However, other applications, such as Raman spectroscopy, in high-pressure fluids are also possible with the autoclave. First experiments were run at pressures between 100 and 600 bars and at temperatures between 25 degrees C and 550 degrees C, and preliminary results on scheelite dissolution in fluids of different compositions show that the autoclave is well suited to study the behavior of ore-forming metals at P-T conditions relevant to the Earth's crust.},

  abstract  = {Animal movement is fundamental for ecosystem functioning and species survival, yet the effects of the anthropogenic footprint on animal movements have not been estimated across species. Using a unique GPS-tracking database of 803 individuals across 57 species, we found that movements of mammals in areas with a comparatively high human footprint were on average one-half to one-third the extent of their movements in areas with a low human footprint. We attribute this reduction to behavioral changes of individual animals and to the exclusion of species with long-range movements from areas with higher human impact. Global loss of vagility alters a key ecological trait of animals that affects not only population persistence but also ecosystem processes such as predator-prey interactions, nutrient cycling, and disease transmission.},
