His works include his diaries, the Essai politique sur le royaume de la Nouvelle-Espagne, the Tablas g{\´e}ograficas, the Vues des Cordill{\`e}res and a geographic atlas. Concerning the scientific aspect, the lack of a section on Mexico in the Relation historique is not a real deficit, since this can be found in the Essai. But only the diaries and letters from the journey, both published by the Alexander-von-Humboldt Research Centre, Berlin, can be considered an adequate substitute. The following will show the origin of Humboldt's writings on Mexico, offer historical and bibliographical facts and present the publications "Beitr{\"a}ge zur Alexander von Humboldt-Forschung", as well as Humboldt's handwritten estate as far as they are available to us.}, language = {en} } @article{Kroeger2013, author = {Kr{\"o}ger, Bj{\"o}rn}, title = {Remarks on a scene, depicting the primeval world}, series = {HIN : Alexander von Humboldt im Netz ; international review for Humboldtian studies}, volume = {XIV}, journal = {HIN : Alexander von Humboldt im Netz ; international review for Humboldtian studies}, number = {27}, publisher = {Universit{\"a}tsverlag Potsdam}, address = {Potsdam}, issn = {1617-5239}, url = {http://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:kobv:517-opus-69848}, pages = {7 -- 35}, year = {2013}, abstract = {The Prussian geologist Leopold von Buch was a lifelong friend of Alexander von Humboldt and had a significant influence on Humboldt's geological ideas. In a talk, held in Berlin in 1831, which is published here for the first time, von Buch presented the Duria Antiquior of 1830 by the English geologist Henry De La Beche. The Duria Antiquior is widely regarded as the earliest depiction of a scene of prehistoric life from deep time. The print raised new questions about the processes of geohistorical change. The talk reveals that Leopold von Buch was a true scientist of the Romantic Age. His descriptions of geohistorical organismic transformations are taken from pictorial examples of organismic transformation from the classical literature. The talk also illustrates how influential English geologists were for geo-historical reconstructions in Germany.}, language = {en} } @article{Kraft2012, author = {Kraft, Tobias}, title = {Textual Differences in Alexander von Humboldt's Essai politique sur l'{\^i}le de Cuba}, series = {Alexander von Humboldt im Netz ; international review for Humboldtian studies}, volume = {XIII}, journal = {Alexander von Humboldt im Netz ; international review for Humboldtian studies}, number = {24}, publisher = {Universit{\"a}tsverlag Potsdam}, address = {Potsdam}, issn = {2568-3543}, url = {http://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:kobv:517-opus-61435}, pages = {75 -- 85}, year = {2012}, abstract = {Die vorliegende Studie basiert auf einem Editionsbericht, der 2009 im Rahmen der Konferenz »Alexander von Humboldt and the Hemisphere« an der Vanderbilt University (Nashville, TN) vorgestellt wurde. In the use of certain means of expression and in certain contexts, both evidentiality and (inter-) subjectivity may be conveyed simultaneously. I thereby differentiate between two meanings of intersubjectivity, namely 'intersubjectivity1' and 'intersubjectivity2'. Intersubjectivity1 refers to the notion of common or general knowledge: certain means of expression are seen as being intersubjectively used when the speaker shares or assumes sharing knowledge with the interlocutor. Intersubjectivity2 is related to particular discourse functions of certain means of expression in interactional settings, paying attention to the speaker-hearer constellation. The article is based upon the hypothesis that the study of the use of these linguistic devices has to be highly context-sensitive, as it is not always (only) the sentence level that has to be looked at if one wants to find out whether a certain adverb or verb of cognitive attitude is used evidentially or epistemically. In this article, therefore, the context is used to determine which meaning aspects of an element are encoded and which are contributed by the context. The data were retrieved from the daily newspaper El Pa{\´i}s. Nevertheless, the present study is not a quantitative one, but rather a qualitative study. My corpus analysis indicates that it is not possible to differentiate between the linguistic categories of evidentiality and epistemic modality in every case, although it indeed is possible in the vast majority of cases. In verbs of cognitive attitude, evidentiality and epistemic modality seem to be two interwoven categories, while concerning modal adverbs it is usually possible to separate the categories and to distinguish between the different subtypes of evidentiality such as visual evidence, hearsay and inference.}, language = {en} } @misc{Hennemann2016, author = {Hennemann, Anja}, title = {A cognitive-constructionist approach to Spanish creo {\O} and creo yo '[I] think'}, series = {Postprints der Universit{\"a}t Potsdam : Philosophische Reihe}, journal = {Postprints der Universit{\"a}t Potsdam : Philosophische Reihe}, number = {121}, issn = {1866-8380}, url = {http://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:kobv:517-opus4-397485}, pages = {26}, year = {2016}, abstract = {The present study approaches the Spanish postposed constructions creo {\O} and creo yo '[p], [I] think' from a cognitive-constructionist perspective. It is argued that both constructions are to be distinguished from one another because creo {\O} has a subjective function, while in creo yo, it is the intersubjective dimension that is particularly prominent. The present investigation takes both a qualitative and a quantitative perspective. With regard to the latter, the problem of quantitative representativity is addressed.
