  abstract  = {This article treats Alexander von Humboldt as an Atlantic intellectual, not only as an european intellectual. The article tries to analize also the "Ensayo pol{\´i}tico sobre la Isla de Cuba" as a key text of the second globalization ("industrial revolution"). Against the background of our knowledge about the reality at the beginnings of the 19th century the article analizes the humboldtian presentation of this reality during his stay in Cuba (1801/1804), confronting it with his "Essay" about Cuba (1826-1831), as well tries to demonstrate the position of Humboldt in the historical thinking. The third part explains the relations of Humboldt to the network of Cuban intellectuals and with some important personalities of the Cuban elite (Arango, Calvo) in the development of his work.},

  abstract  = {Der Artikel verfolgt zwei Ziele, die beide mit dem Fund des bisher unbekannten humboldtschen Kuba-Tagebuchs von 1804 (in der Biblioteka Jagiellonska Krak{\´o}w durch Ulrike Leitner) zusammenh{\"a}ngen. Einmal will er die zwar diskontinuierliche, aber zusammenh{\"a}ngende Entwicklung von Humboldts Sklavereibild darlegen (die im Tagebuch von 1804 in gewissem Sinne kulminiert und in nuce den Essay {\"u}ber Kuba bildet) und zum zweiten die wissenschaftsgeschichtliche Sensation, dass Humboldt wesentliche Elemente der Methode des Vergleichs systematisch auf soziale, historische und sozio{\"o}konomische Verh{\"a}ltnisse der Sklaverei anzuwenden begann, als er Anfang 1804 in Veracruz oder Havanna von der Proklamation des Staates „Haity" auf der Insel Santo Domingo h{\"o}rte. Diese beiden Erkenntnisse {\"a}ndern die Einsch{\"a}tzung von Humboldts politischem Verh{\"a}ltnis zu zwei Gruppen der spanisch-amerikanischen Bev{\"o}lkerung (die Teile der kreolische Elite, die plante „eine weiße Republik" nach dem Vorbild Frankreichs zu gr{\"u}nden, und die Gruppe oder „Kaste" der „pardos") am „Vorabend der Unabh{\"a}ngigkeitsrevolution".},

  abstract  = {El Ensayo Pol{\´i}tico sobre la isla de Cuba de Humboldt constituye un importante estudio sobre el pensamiento de los hacendados y de los funcionarios coloniales de La Habana, quienes fueron sus principales colaboradores durante el per{\´i}odo 1801-1826. En correspondencia con sus ideas de progreso humano, Humboldt critic{\´o} la influencia del pensamiento, basado en la explotaci{\´o}n de la fuerza de trabajo esclava, en los problemas de car{\´a}cter cient{\´i}fico, social y econ{\´o}mico de la Isla. Por eso Humboldt se preocup{\´o} por las aspiraciones pol{\´i}ticas de los hacendados. Sin embargo, casi no se{\~n}ala el programa reformista efectuado por el Intendente Alejandro Ram{\´i}rez. Por otra parte, Humboldt desconoci{\´o} el pensamiento de progreso de un grupo de profesores y estudiantes del Colegio Seminario de San Carlos en La Habana. Sus primeros contactos con este pensamiento ocurrieron en Europa despu{\´e}s de haberse publicado su Ensayo en 1826.},
