In order to explain the reasons why people torture others, individualist approaches concentrate on individuals' motives or interests. Contrary to that, the article argues that torture should be understood as a social relation. Thus, it takes the social relations of the group of torturers as a starting point. Firstly, following Georg Simmel's analysis of the secret society the paper argues that the group of torturers can adequately be conceptualized as a secret society; secondly, against this background the article reconstructs the conditions which structure torturers' agency; finally, this article offers an outline of the processes and dynamics that allows for explaining the phenomenon of torture. The thesis of the article argues that a relational sociology helps better explain and understand the social phenomenon of torture.}, language = {de} } @article{DautzenbergFayGraf2011, author = {Dautzenberg, Kristi and Fay, Doris and Graf, Patricia}, title = {Wie geht es weiter}, isbn = {978-3-531-183252-7}, year = {2011}, language = {de} } @article{GrafSchmid2011, author = {Graf, Patricia and Schmid, Sylvia}, title = {Organisationsstrukturen und ihr Einfluss auf die Karriereentwicklung von Wissenschaftlerinnen}, isbn = {978-3-531-183252-7}, year = {2011}, language = {de} } @article{Graf2011, author = {Graf, Patricia}, title = {Erkl{\"a}rungsans{\"a}tze der außerhochschulischen Forschungseinrichtungen zur Unterrepr{\"a}sentation von Frauen}, isbn = {978-3-531-183252-7}, year = {2011}, language = {de} } @article{GrafDautzenbergBuettneretal.2011, author = {Graf, Patricia and Dautzenberg, Kristi and B{\"u}ttner, Nadja and Schmid, Sylvia}, title = {Frauenkarriere in der Wissenschaft : eine vergleichende Analyse des Status quo}, isbn = {978-3-531-183252-7}, year = {2011}, language = {de} } @article{HuettgesFay2011, author = {H{\"u}ttges, Annett and Fay, Doris}, title = {Geschlechterdifferente (Wissenschafts-)Karrieren - Fakten, Theorien und Denkanst{\"o}ße}, isbn = {978-3-531-183252-7}, year = {2011}, language = {de} } @article{DautzenbergFayGraf2011, author = {Dautzenberg, Kirsti and Fay, Doris and Graf, Patricia}, title = {Vorwort}, isbn = {978-3-531-183252-7}, year = {2011}, language = {de} } @book{OPUS4-33822, title = {Frauen in den Naturwissenschaften : Anspr{\"u}che und Widerspr{\"u}che}, editor = {Dautzenberg, Kirstin and Fay, Doris and Graf, Patricia}, publisher = {VS Verlag f{\"u}r Sozialwissenschaften / Springer Fachmedien Wiesbaden GmbH Wiesbaden}, address = {Wiesbaden}, isbn = {978-3-531-18352-7}, doi = {10.1007/978-3-531-94225-4}, pages = {119 S.}, year = {2011}, language = {de} }
