Over time, riding techniques and the style of riding improved. Therefore, horses with the ability to perform comfortable gaits (e.g. ambling or pacing), so-called 'gaited' horses, have been highly valued by humans, especially for long distance travel. Recently, the causative mutation for gaitedness in horses has been linked to a substitution causing a premature stop codon in the DMRT3 gene (DMRT3_Ser301STOP) [1]. In mice, Dmrt3 is expressed in spinal cord interneurons and plays an important role in the development of limb movement coordination [1]. Genotyping the position in 4396 modern horses from 141 breeds revealed that nowadays the mutated allele is distributed worldwide with an especially high frequency in gaited horses and breeds used for harness racing [2]. Here, we examine historic horse remains for the DMRT3 SNP, tracking the origin of gaitedness to Medieval England between 850 and 900 AD. The presence of the corresponding allele in Icelandic horses (9th-11th century) strongly suggests that ambling horses were brought from the British Isles to Iceland by Norse people. Considering the high frequency of the ambling allele in early Icelandic horses, we believe that Norse settlers selected for this comfortable mode of horse riding soon after arrival. The absence of the allele in samples from continental Europe (including Scandinavia) at this time implies that ambling horses may have spread from Iceland and maybe also the British Isles across the continent at a later date.}, language = {en} } @misc{WuesthoffSohl2016, author = {Wuesthoff, Martin and Sohl, F.}, title = {Obliquity tides have an impact in diurnal tidal stresses on the Moon.}, series = {Macromolecules : a publication of the American Chemical Society}, volume = {51}, journal = {Macromolecules : a publication of the American Chemical Society}, publisher = {Wiley-Blackwell}, address = {Hoboken}, issn = {1086-9379}, pages = {A672 -- A672}, year = {2016}, language = {en} } @misc{WolffBrand2016, author = {Wolff, Wanja and Brand, Ralf}, title = {Editorial: Using Substances to Enhance Performance: A Psychology of Neuroenhancement}, series = {Frontiers in psychology}, volume = {7}, journal = {Frontiers in psychology}, publisher = {Frontiers Research Foundation}, address = {Lausanne}, issn = {1664-1078}, doi = {10.3389/fpsyg.2016.01741}, pages = {2}, year = {2016}, language = {en} } @misc{WischkeLendlein2016, author = {Wischke, Christian and Lendlein, Andreas}, title = {Functional nanocarriers by miniaturization of polymeric materials}, series = {Nanomedicine}, volume = {11}, journal = {Nanomedicine}, publisher = {Future Medicine}, address = {London}, issn = {1743-5889}, doi = {10.2217/nnm.16.45}, pages = {1507 -- 1509}, year = {2016}, language = {en} } @misc{WippertPuschmannSchiltenwolfetal.2016, author = {Wippert, Pia-Maria and Puschmann, Anne-Katrin and Schiltenwolf, Marcus and Wiebking, Christine and Mayer, Frank}, title = {BACK PAIN: THE STUDY OF MECHANISMS AND THE TRANSLATION IN INTERVENTIONS WITHIN THE MISPEX NETWORK}, series = {Psychosomatic medicine}, volume = {78}, journal = {Psychosomatic medicine}, publisher = {Elsevier}, address = {Philadelphia}, issn = {0033-3174}, pages = {A91 -- A91}, year = {2016}, language = {en} } @misc{WeskeSadiqSofferetal.2016, author = {Weske, Mathias and Sadiq, Shazia and Soffer, Pnina and Voelzer, Hagen}, title = {Preface to BPM 2014}, series = {Information systems}, volume = {56}, journal = {Information systems}, publisher = {Elsevier}, address = {Oxford}, issn = {0306-4379}, doi = {10.1016/j.is.2015.09.006}, pages = {233 -- 234}, year = {2016}, language = {en} } @misc{WawrzenitzKrohe2016, author = {Wawrzenitz, Nicole and Krohe, Alexander}, title = {Deformed monazite yields high-temperature tectonic ages}, series = {Geology}, volume = {44}, journal = {Geology}, publisher = {American Institute of Physics}, address = {Boulder}, issn = {0091-7613}, doi = {10.1130/G37394C.1}, pages = {E377 -- E377}, year = {2016}, language = {en} } @misc{WalzGretRegameyLavorel2016, author = {Walz, Ariane and Gret-Regamey, Adrienne and Lavorel, Sandra}, title = {Social valuation of ecosystem services in mountain regions}, series = {Regional environmental change}, volume = {16}, journal = {Regional environmental change}, publisher = {Springer}, address = {Heidelberg}, issn = {1436-3798}, doi = {10.1007/s10113-016-1028-x}, pages = {1985 -- 1987}, year = {2016}, language = {en} } @misc{VoellerHeidlerRiecketal.2016, author = {V{\"o}ller, Heinz and Heidler, Maria-Dorothea and Rieck, Angelika and Schikora, Martin and Haubold, Kathrin and Joebges, Michael and Salzwedel, Annett}, title = {Prevalence of mild cognitive impairment in patients after an acute coronary syndrome in cardiac rehabilitation}, series = {European heart journal}, volume = {37}, journal = {European heart journal}, publisher = {Oxford Univ.
