Im Angesicht ihrer kolonialen Sklavereiwirtschaft ger{\"a}t die optimistische Geschichtsphilosophie der europ{\"a}ischen Aufkl{\"a}rung in eine Krise, und die Widerspr{\"u}che des Humboldtschen Diskurses treten zutage. Dieses Ph{\"a}nomen l{\"a}ßt sich insbesondere literaturwissenschaftlich analysieren: Alexander von Humboldt entwirft Cuba als einen poetischen Raum, in dem alles mehrdeutig wird. Der Text gestaltet bereits die Ann{\"a}herung w{\"a}hrend der {\"U}berfahrt aus Venezuela dramaturgisch als Irritation der Wahrnehmung; der Landgang in Havanna wird inszeniert als Kontrast gegens{\"a}tzlicher Eindr{\"u}cke; die symbolisch-topographische Funktion Cubas in Humboldts geographischer Imagination ist eine in verschiedener Hinsicht intermedi{\"a}re; und sogar Humboldts philosophisch-{\"a}sthetische Terminologie erf{\"a}hrt in Cuba eine semantische Aufladung mit einem {\"o}konomisch-politischen Doppelsinn.},

It was feared that increasing deforestation would lead to continuous decrease in rainfall. This first scientific discussion about climate change as the result of human intervention was strongly influenced by the research Alexander von Humboldt and Jean-Baptiste Boussingault had undertaken when they investigated the falling water levels of Lake Valencia in Venezuela. This essay aims to clarify the question whether Alexander von Humboldt can be counted among the leading figures of modern environmentalism on account of this research as is being claimed by Richard H. Grove in his influential book Green Imperialism. Colonial Expansion, Tropical Island Edens and Origins of Environmentalism, 1600-1860 (1995).},

In the context of recent reflections upon global ethics (Hans K{\"u}ng), global democracy (Otfried H{\"o}ffe) and a new cultural situation after the end of the Cold War (Clifford Geertz), Alexander von Humboldt's concept of global consciousness (Weltbewußtsein) marks a decisive point in the ungoing process of the construction of a new ethics of globalization. This article tries to show how Humboldt's transdisciplinary and intercultural conception of sience as WorldWideWeb integrates Kant's philosophical visions of global political institutions and formulates a critique of the non-empirical foundations of Hegel's teleological Weltanschauung. From his Visions of Nature and his Personal Narrative to his Cosmos, Humboldt's theory and practice of science help us to find a new ethos and new answers to the contemporary questions of divergent modernities.},

  abstract  = {Humboldt wrote about Mexico from the perspective of a scientific explorer and naturalist. His works include his diaries, the Essai politique sur le royaume de la Nouvelle-Espagne, the Tablas g{\´e}ograficas, the Vues des Cordill{\`e}res and a geographic atlas. Concerning the scientific aspect, the lack of a section on Mexico in the Relation historique is not a real deficit, since this can be found in the Essai. But only the diaries and letters from the journey, both published by the Alexander-von-Humboldt Research Centre, Berlin, can be considered an adequate substitute. The following will show the origin of Humboldt's writings on Mexico, offer historical and bibliographical facts and present the publications "Beitr{\"a}ge zur Alexander von Humboldt-Forschung", as well as Humboldt's handwritten estate as far as they are available to us.},

  abstract  = {On the 17th of July 1800 Alexander von Humboldt was elected as an extraordinary member of the Prussian Acad{\´e}mie royale des sciences et belles-lettres at Berlin. The paper first deals with Humboldt's scientific activities before his election and then goes into detail as far as his integration into the work of the Academy is concerned. Humboldt was elected as a chimiste c{\´e}l{\`e}bre, but as a member of the Academy he did not work as a chemist. When Humboldt proposed in 1837 to classify the members of each class in special fields, he chose for himself the field of "mineralogy-geology".},

  abstract  = {The present paper investigates the conceptual development of Alexander on Humboldt. The point of reference is his relation to Schelling and to a series of investigators of nature and of physicians closely connected to Naturphilosophie. It is shown that in the correspondence of Humboldt with this group the content underwent a transformation. Scientific exchanges and a general interpretative consensus were over the years more and more replaced by social cooperation over academic appointments, and collaboration over other political problems within the scientific establishment. Humboldt fit Schelling and other partners with whom he cooperated into a network of relationships that rested on mutual social support.},
