First the PTFE films were patterned and then fusion-bonded with the FEP films. The laminates were subjected to either corona or contact charging in order to obtain the desired piezoelectricity. The build-up of the "macro-dipoles" in the laminated films was studied by recording the electric hysteresis loops. The resulting electro-mechanical properties were investigated by means of dielectric resonance spectroscopy (DRS) and direct measurements of the stress-strain relationship. Moreover, the thermal stability of the piezoelectric d (33) coefficient was investigated at elevated temperatures and via thermally stimulated discharge (TSD) current measurements in short circuit. For 150 mu m thick laminated films, consisting of one 25 mu m thick PTFE layer, two 12.5 mu m thick FEP layers, and a void of 100 mu m height, the critical voltage necessary for the build-up of the "macro-dipoles" in the inner voids was approximately 1400 V, which agrees with the value calculated from the Paschen Law. A quasi-static piezoelectric d (33) coefficient up to 300 pC/N was observed after corona charging. The mechanical properties of the film systems are highly anisotropic. At room temperature, the Young's moduli of the laminated film system are around 0.37 MPa in the thickness direction and 274 MPa in the lateral direction, respectively. Using these values, the theoretical shape anisotropy ratio of the void was calculated, which agrees well with experimental observation. Compared with films that do not exhibit structural regularity, the laminates showed improved thermal stability of the d (33) coefficients. The thermal stability of d (33) can be further improved by pre-aging. E.g., the reduction of the d (33) value in the sample pre-aged at 150A degrees C for 5 h was less than 5\% after annealing for 30 h at a temperature of 90A degrees C.}, language = {en} } @article{SunYang2011, author = {Sun, Zhongkui and Yang, Xiaoli}, title = {Generating and enhancing lag synchronization of chaotic systems by white noise}, series = {Chaos : an interdisciplinary journal of nonlinear science}, volume = {21}, journal = {Chaos : an interdisciplinary journal of nonlinear science}, number = {3}, publisher = {American Institute of Physics}, address = {Melville}, issn = {1054-1500}, doi = {10.1063/1.3623440}, pages = {10}, year = {2011}, abstract = {In this paper, we study the crucial impact of white noise on lag synchronous regime in a pair of time-delay unidirectionally coupled systems. Traditionally, Annelida has been split into two major groups: Clitellata (earthworms and leeches) and polychaetes (bristle worms), but recent evidence suggests that other taxa that were once considered to be separate phyla (Sipuncula, Echiura and Siboglinidae (also known as Pogonophora)) should be included in Annelida(1-4). However, the deep-level evolutionary relationships of Annelida are still poorly understood, and a robust reconstruction of annelid evolutionary history is needed. Here we show that phylogenomic analyses of 34 annelid taxa, using 47,953 amino acid positions, recovered a well-supported phylogeny with strong support for major splits. Our results recover chaetopterids, myzostomids and sipunculids in the basal part of the tree, although the position of Myzostomida remains uncertain owing to its long branch. This makes simulations of complex source geometries expensive, requiring separate evaluations of many point dipole fields, and thus limits the practical applicability of such schemes for simulating and interpreting field data. We present a novel 2.5D CSEM modeling scheme that overcomes this limitation and permits efficient simulations of sources with general shape and orientation by evaluating fields for the entire source at once. We accommodate general sources by using a secondary field approach, in which primary fields are computed for the general source and a 1D background conductivity model. To carry out the required Fourier transforms between space and wavenumber domain using the same fast cosine and sine transform filters as in conventional algorithms, we split the primary and secondary fields into their symmetric and antisymmetric parts. For complex 3D source geometries, this approach is significantly more efficient than previous 2.5D algorithms. Nevertheless, simulations of CSEM data often approximate these sources as point dipoles. Although this is justified for sufficiently large source-receiver distances, many real surveys include frequencies and distances at which the dipole approximation is inaccurate. For 1D layered media, electromagnetic (EM) fields for point dipole sources can be computed using well-known quasi-analytical solutions and fields for sources of finite length can be synthesized by superposing point dipole fields. However, the calculation of numerous point dipole fields is computationally expensive, requiring a large number of numerical integral evaluations. We combine a more efficient representation of finite-length sources in terms of components related to the wire and its end points with very general expressions for EM fields in 1D layered media. We thus obtain a formulation that requires fewer numerical integrations than the superposition of dipole fields, permits source and receiver placement at any depth within the layer stack and can also easily be integrated into 3D modelling algorithms. Complex source geometries, such as wires bent due to surface obstructions, can be simulated by segmenting the wire and computing the responses for each segment separately. The high operating voltage of such devices is currently a large drawback, hindering their use in applications such as biomedical devices and biomimetic robots, however, they could be improved with a careful design of their material properties. The main targets for improving their properties are increasing the relative permittivity of the active material, while maintaining high electric breakdown strength and low stiffness, which would lead to enhanced electrostatic storage ability and hence, reduced operating voltage. Improvement of the functional properties is possible through the use of nanocomposites. These exploit the high surface-to-volume ratio of the nanoscale filler, resulting in large effects on macroscale properties. This thesis explores several strategies for nanomaterials design. The resulting nanocomposites are fully characterized with respect to their electrical and mechanical properties, by use of dielectric spectroscopy, tensile mechanical analysis, and electric breakdown tests. First, nanocomposites consisting of high permittivity rutile TiO2 nanoparticles dispersed in thermoplastic block copolymer SEBS (poly-styrene-coethylene-co-butylene-co-styrene) are shown to exhibit permittivity increases of up to 3.7 times, leading to 5.6 times improvement in electrostatic energy density, but with a trade-off in mechanical properties (an 8-fold increase in stiffness). The variation in both electrical and mechanical properties still allows for electromechanical improvement, such that a 27 \% reduction of the electric field is found compared to the pure elastomer. Second, it is shown that the use of nanofiller conductive particles (carbon black (CB)) can lead to a strong increase of relative permittivity through percolation, however, with detrimental side effects. These are due to localized enhancement of the electric field within the composite, which leads to sharp reductions in electric field strength. Hence, the increase in permittivity does not make up for the reduction in breakdown strength in relation to stored electrical energy, which may prohibit their practical use. Third, a completely new approach for increasing the relative permittivity and electrostatic energy density of a polymer based on 'molecular composites' is presented, relying on chemically grafting soft π-conjugated macromolecules to a flexible elastomer backbone. Polarization caused by charge displacement along the conjugated backbone is found to induce a large and controlled permittivity enhancement (470 \% over the elastomer matrix), while chemical bonding, encapsulates the PANI chains manifesting in hardly any reduction in electric breakdown strength, and hence resulting in a large increase in stored electrostatic energy. This is shown to lead to an improvement in the sensitivity of the measured electromechanical response (83 \% reduction of the driving electric field) as well as in the maximum actuation strain (250 \%). These results represent a large step forward in the understanding of the strategies which can be employed to obtain high permittivity polymer materials with practical use for electro-elastomer actuation.}, language = {en} } @article{StoofLeichsenringJungingerOlakaetal.2011, author = {Stoof-Leichsenring, Kathleen Rosemarie and Junginger, Annett and Olaka, Lydia A. and Tiedemann, Ralph and Trauth, Martin H.}, title = {Environmental variability in Lake Naivasha, Kenya, over the last two centuries}, series = {Journal of paleolimnolog}, volume = {45}, journal = {Journal of paleolimnolog}, number = {3}, publisher = {Springer}, address = {Dordrecht}, issn = {0921-2728}, doi = {10.1007/s10933-011-9502-4}, pages = {353 -- 367}, year = {2011}, abstract = {Lake Naivasha, Kenya, is one of a number of freshwater lakes in the East African Rift System. Since the beginning of the twentieth century, it has experienced greater anthropogenic influence as a result of increasingly intensive farming of coffee, tea, flowers, and other horticultural crops within its catchment. The water-level history of Lake Naivasha over the past 200 years was derived from a combination of instrumental records and sediment data. In this study, we analysed diatoms in a lake sediment core to infer past lacustrine conductivity and total phosphorus concentrations. We also measured total nitrogen and carbon concentrations in the sediments. Core chronology was established by (210)Pb dating and covered a similar to 186-year history of natural (climatic) and human-induced environmental changes. Three stratigraphic zones in the core were identified using diatom assemblages. There was a change from littoral/epiphytic diatoms such as Gomphonema gracile and Cymbella muelleri, which occurred during a prolonged dry period from ca. 1820 to 1896 AD, through a transition period, to the present planktonic Aulacoseira sp. that favors nutrient-rich waters. This marked change in the diatom assemblage was caused by climate change, and later a strong anthropogenic overprint on the lake system. Increases in sediment accumulation rates since 1928, from 0.01 to 0.08 g cm(-2) year(-1) correlate with an increase in diatom-inferred total phosphorus concentrations since the beginning of the twentieth century. The increase in phosphorus accumulation suggests increasing eutrophication of freshwater Lake Naivasha. This study identified two major periods in the lake's history: (1) the period from 1820 to 1950 AD, during which the lake was affected mainly by natural climate variations, and (2) the period since 1950, during which the effects of anthropogenic activity overprinted those of natural climate variation.}, language = {en} } @phdthesis{StoofLeichsenring2011, author = {Stoof-Leichsenring, Kathleen Rosemarie}, title = {Genetic analysis of diatoms and rotifers in tropical Kenyan lake sediments}, address = {Potsdam}, year = {2011}, language = {en} } @article{StojanovicMarkovicKleinpeteretal.2011, author = {Stojanovic, Milovan and Markovic, Rade and Kleinpeter, Erich and Baranac-Stojanovic, Marija}, title = {Endo-Mode cyclizations of vinylogous N-acyliminium ions as a route to the synthesis of condensed thiazolidines}, series = {Tetrahedron}, volume = {67}, journal = {Tetrahedron}, number = {49}, publisher = {Elsevier}, address = {Oxford}, issn = {0040-4020}, doi = {10.1016/j.tet.2011.10.011}, pages = {9541 -- 9554}, year = {2011}, abstract = {endo-Mode cyclizations of vinylogous N-acyliminium ions incorporating heteroatom-based nucleophiles have been examined as a route to the synthesis of condensed thiazolidines. This method reveals accurate and precise Si isotope data on bulk materials, and at high spatial resolution, on the mineral scale. The following Si pools have been investigated: a) the Si source to soils on all major silicate minerals on thin sections from bedrock fragments in the soil profiles; b) bulk soils (particle size <2 mm) after fusion to glass beads with an iridium-strip heater or pressed into powder pellets: c) separated clay fractions as pressed powder pellets and e) separated phytoliths as pressed powder pellets. Multiple analyses of three rock standards, BHVO-2, AGV-1 and RGM-1 as fused glass beads and as pressed powder pellets, reveal delta(30)Si values within the expected range of igneous rocks. The MPI-DING reference glass KL2-G exhibits the same Si isotope composition after remelting by an iridium-strip heater showing that this technique does not alter the isotope composition of the glass. We used this approach to investigated two immature Cambisols developed on sandstone and paragneiss in the Black Forest (Germany), respectively. Bulk soils show a largely uniform Si isotope signature for different horizons and locations, which is close to those of primary quartz and feldspar with delta(30)Si values around -0.4 parts per thousand. Soil clay formation is associated with limited Si mobility, which preserves initial Si isotope signatures of parental minerals. An exception is the organic horizon of the paragneiss catchment where intense weathering leads to a high mobility of Si and significant negative isotope signatures as low as to -1.00 parts per thousand in bulk soils. Biogenic opal in the form of phytoliths, exhibits negative Si isotope signatures of about -0.4 parts per thousand. These results demonstrate that UV femtosecond laser ablation MC-ICP-MS provides a tool to characterize the Si isotope signature of the principle Si pools left behind after weathering and Si transport have altered soils. These results can now serve as a fingerprint of the residual solids that can be used to explain the isotope composition of dissolved Si in soil solutions and river water, which is mostly enriched in the heavy isotopes.}, language = {en} } @article{Stehl2011, author = {Stehl, Thomas}, title = {Sprachen und Diskurse als Tr{\"a}ger und Mittler mobiler Kulturen}, series = {Mobilisierte Kulturen}, journal = {Mobilisierte Kulturen}, number = {2}, issn = {2192-3019}, url = {http://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:kobv:517-opus-53646}, pages = {39 -- 55}, year = {2011}, language = {de} } @article{Stehl2011, author = {Stehl, Thomas}, title = {Mobilit{\"a}t, Sprachkontakte und Integration}, series = {Mobilisierte Kulturen}, journal = {Mobilisierte Kulturen}, number = {1}, issn = {2192-3019}, url = {http://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:kobv:517-opus-57321}, pages = {33 -- 52}, year = {2011}, language = {de} } @article{Stehl2011, author = {Stehl, Thomas}, title = {Sprachen und Diskurse als Tr{\"a}ger und Mittler mobiler Kulturen ; kommunikative Aspekte der Migrationslinguistik}, isbn = {978-3-86956-091-5}, year = {2011}, language = {de} } @book{Stehl2011, author = {Stehl, Thomas}, title = {Sprachkontakte, Sprachvariation und Sprachwandel : Festschrift f{\"u}r Thomas Stehl zum 60.
