  abstract  = {Die K{\"o}niglich Preußische Seehandlung, nach der heute die „Stiftung Preußische Seehandlung" benannt ist, besitzt eine lange und vielseitige Geschichte. Der anl{\"a}sslich des Stiftungsjubil{\"a}ums erscheinende Band wirft einen Blick auf die Gr{\"u}ndungskonstellation 1772, als K{\"o}nig Friedrich II. die Gewerbe in Preußen f{\"o}rdern wollte. Er zeichnet die Aktivit{\"a}ten von M{\"a}nnern an der Spitze der Seehandlung nach, wie Finanzminister Carl August von Struensee und dem unternehmerisch denkenden Karrierebeamten Christian Rother. Das Geb{\"a}ude der Seehandlung wurde nach 1900 neu erbaut und ist heute in der Berlin-Brandenburgischen Akademie am Gendarmenmarkt lebendige Gegenwart. Die Seehandlung erhielt von ihren Zeitgenossen im 19. Jahrhundert ambivalente Urteile. Ein Ausblick auf die Geschichte der Stiftung Preußische Seehandlung seit 1983 zeigt das Bem{\"u}hen um Kunst- und Kulturf{\"o}rderung als zentrale Aufgabe.},

  abstract  = {The field of American Jewish studies has recently trained its focus on the transnational dimensions of its subject, reflecting in more sustained ways than before about the theories and methods of this approach. Yet, much of the insight to be gained from seeing American Jewry as constitutively entangled in many ways with other Jewries has not yet been realized. Transnational American Jewish studies are still in their infancy. This issue of PaRDeS presents current research on the multiple entanglements of American with Central European, especially German-speaking Jewries in the 19th and 20th centuries. The articles reflect the wide range of topics that can benefit from a transnational understanding of the American Jewish experience as shaped by its foreign entanglements.},
