We report on the results of similar to 230 hours of observations of five dwarf galaxies and the joint statistical analysis of four of the dwarf galaxies. Here, we report the results of our Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) survey for dark galaxies fluorescently illuminated by quasars at z > 3. Compared to previous studies which are based on deep narrowband (NB) imaging, our integral field survey provides a nearly uniform sensitivity coverage over a large volume in redshift space around the quasars as well as full spectral information at each location. Thanks to these unique features, we are able to build control samples at large redshift distances from the quasars using the same data taken under the same conditions. By comparing the rest-frame equivalent width (EW0) distributions of the Ly alpha sources detected in proximity to the quasars and in control samples, we detect a clear correlation between the locations of high-EW0 objects and the quasars. This correlation is not seen in other properties, such as Ly alpha luminosities or volume overdensities, suggesting the possible fluorescent nature of at least some of these objects. Among these, we find six sources without continuum counterparts and EW0 limits larger than 240 angstrom that are the best candidates for dark galaxies in our survey at z > 3.5. The volume densities and properties, including inferred gas masses and star formation efficiencies, of these dark galaxy candidates are similar to those of previously detected candidates at z approximate to 2.4 in NB surveys. Moreover, if the most distant of these are fluorescently illuminated by the quasar, our results also provide a lower limit of t - 60 Myr on the quasar lifetime.}, language = {en} } @misc{Wagner2012, author = {Wagner, Stefanie}, title = {Dario Fos "Morte accidentale di un anarchico" und seine Adaptationen in Frankreich und Deutschland}, url = {http://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:kobv:517-opus-60279}, year = {2012}, abstract = {Dario Fo (Nobelpreis 1997) ist einer der herausragendsten Erneuerer des italienischen Theaters des 20. A comparison of daphnid biomass and production with those of other herbivorous groups (i. e. ciliates, rotifers, herbivorous crustaceans) reveals that in early spring daphnids play a minor role in relative and absolute values as compared to small fast growing ciliates. During this time, small algae and ciliates dominate which gives rise to a decreasing Sheldon-type size spectrum, low predator-prey weight ratios, and a low transfer efficiency along the size gradient. Around June, daphnids reach maximum abundances and become keystone species for the shape of the biomass size distribution, the food web structure, and the energy flow. They accumulate biomass in their size range one order of magnitude above the average. The slope of the normalized biomass size spectrum is less negative and positively correlated with daphnid biomass if the latter exceeds about 200 mg C/m2. This indicates a more efficient transfer along the size gradient with high predator-prey weight ratios and high trophic transfer efficiencies. The coefficients of determination of regression lines fitted to size distributions decrease with daphnid abundance, i. e. the size spectra become more irregular when daphnids dominate. In midsummer, daphnids lose their dominance and coexist with other herbivores (especially ciliates) in a highly diverse plankton community. The latter gives rise to a relatively smooth and almost flat Sheldon-type size distribution, lower predator-prey weight ratios, and a slightly reduced transfer efficiency along the size gradient. In late spring/early summer, negative relationships are found between daphnid biomass and the biomasses in the size ranges of autotrophic picoplankton, small phytoplankton, heterotrophic flagellates, and small and medium sized ciliates (0.06 - 32 pg C and 100-30,000 pg C). In mid- and late summer or on annual average, hardly any of these relationships existed. This cannot solely be attributed to lower daphnid abundance but points also to a more diverse control of small plankton organisms including nutrient limitation in summer. Ciliates influence the slope and shape of the size distribution much less than daphnids although they are at least of equal importance as daphnids in respect to herbivory and related fluxes in Lake Constance on annual average. The findings on the impact of daphnids on the energy flow within the plankton food web derived from size distributions are compared to, and are consistent with results obtained by mass-balanced carbon flow diagrams.}, language = {en} } @article{LukasWacker2014, author = {Lukas, Marcus and Wacker, Alexander}, title = {Daphnia's dilemma: adjustment of carbon budgets in the face of food and cholesterol limitation}, series = {The journal of experimental biology}, volume = {217}, journal = {The journal of experimental biology}, number = {7}, publisher = {Company of Biologists Limited}, address = {Cambridge}, issn = {0022-0949}, doi = {10.1242/jeb.094151}, pages = {1079 -- 1086}, year = {2014}, abstract = {We studied the carbon (C) metabolism in Daphnia when the amount of C (food quantity) and/or the content of biochemical nutrients (food quality) was limiting. Growth performances and C budgets of Daphnia magna (assimilation, faeces egestion, excretion and respiration measured by [C-14]-tracing) were analysed when animals were raised on different food quantities and concentrations of cholesterol, an essential biochemical food compound. Cholesterol is of special interest because it not only acts as limiting nutrient but also contributes to the overall C pool of the animals. As the tissue cholesterol concentration in Daphnia is quite low, we hypothesized the selective exclusion of cholesterol from C budgeting and tested this using radiolabelled cholesterol. Somatic growth rates of D. magna were highest at high quantity and quality and were reduced to a moderate value if either the food quantity or the cholesterol concentration was low. Growth was lowest at low food quantity and quality. The measurements of C budgets revealed high regulative response to low food quality at high food quantity only. Here, low dietary cholesterol caused bulk C assimilation efficiency (AE) to decrease and assimilated (excess) C to be increasingly respired. Additionally, Daphnia enhanced efficient adjustment of C budgets when facing cholesterol limitation by (1) increasing the AE of the cholesterol itself and (2) not changing cholesterol respiration, which was still not detectable. In contrast, at low food quantity, Daphnia is unable to adjust for low food quality, emphasizing that food limitation could overrule food quality effects.}, language = {en} } @misc{Menke1999, author = {Menke, Christoph}, title = {Danto, A. As a result of higher precipitation intensities, flash floods might occur more frequently in future. In combination with changing land use patterns and urbanisation, damage mitigation, insurance and risk management in flash-flood-prone regions are becoming increasingly important. However, a better understanding of damage caused by flash floods requires ex post collection of relevant but yet sparsely available information for research. At the end of May 2016, very high and concentrated rainfall intensities led to severe flash floods in several southern German municipalities. The small town of Braunsbach stood as a prime example of the devastating potential of such events. Eight to ten days after the flash flood event, damage assessment and data collection were conducted in Braunsbach by investigating all affected buildings and their surroundings. To record and store the data on site, the open-source software bundle KoBoCollect was used as an efficient and easy way to gather information. Since the damage driving factors of flash floods are expected to differ from those of riverine flooding, a post-hoc data analysis was performed, aiming to identify the influence of flood processes and building attributes on damage grades, which reflect the extent of structural damage. Data analyses include the application of random forest, a random general linear model and multinomial logistic regression as well as the construction of a local impact map to reveal influences on the damage grades. Further, a Spearman's Rho correlation matrix was calculated. The results reveal that the damage driving factors of flash floods differ from those of riverine floods to a certain extent. The exposition of a building in flow direction shows an especially strong correlation with the damage grade and has a high predictive power within the constructed damage models. Additionally, the results suggest that building materials as well as various building aspects, such as the existence of a shop window and the surroundings, might have an effect on the resulting damage. To verify and confirm the outcomes as well as to support future mitigation strategies, risk management and planning, more comprehensive and systematic data collection is necessary.}, language = {en} } @article{PrahlBoettleCostaetal.2018, author = {Prahl, Boris F. and Boettle, Markus and Costa, Lu{\´i}s F{\´i}l{\´i}pe Carvalho da and Kropp, J{\"u}rgen and Rybski, Diego}, title = {Damage and protection cost curves for coastal floods within the 600 largest European cities}, series = {Scientific Data}, volume = {5}, journal = {Scientific Data}, publisher = {Nature Publ. Hydrological impacts of recent changes in climate are usually investigated by trend analyses applied on annual, seasonal, or monthly time series. None of these detect sub-seasonal changes and their underlying causes. This study investigated sub-seasonal changes in streamflow, rainfall, and snowmelt in 61 and 51 catchments respectively in Western (Vestlandet) and Eastern (ostlandet) Norway by applying the Mann-Kendall test and Theil-Sen estimator on 10-day moving averaged daily time series over a 30-year period (1983-2012). The relative contribution of rainfall versus snowmelt to daily streamflow and the changes therein have also been estimated to identify the changing relevance of these driving processes over the same period. Detected changes in 10-day moving averaged daily streamflow were finally attributed to changes in the most important hydro-meteorological drivers using multiple-regression models with increasing complexity. Earlier spring flow timing in both regions occur due to earlier snowmelt. ostlandet shows increased summer streamflow in catchments up to 1100 m a.s.l. and slightly increased winter streamflow in about 50\% of the catchments. Trend patterns in Vestlandet are less coherent. The importance of rainfall has increased in both regions. Attribution of trends reveals that changes in rainfall and snowmelt can explain some streamflow changes where they are dominant processes (e.g., spring snowmelt in ostlandet and autumn rainfall in Vestlandet). Overall, the detected streamflow changes can be best explained by adding temperature trends as an additional predictor, indicating the relevance of additional driving processes such as increased glacier melt and evapotranspiration.}, language = {en} } @article{PugaAlcaldeBarrenaetal.2001, author = {Puga, E. and Alcalde, D. and Barrena, R. and Mediavilla, E. and Motta, V. and Munoz, J.
