We invert the corresponding first break arrival times for the P- and S-wave velocity structure and compare two different strategies to interpret these models in terms of pertinent lithological and geotechnical parameter variations. The first (common) approach is based on directly translating the tomographic velocity models into the parameters of interest (e.g., elastic moduli). The second (zonal) approach first reduces the tomographic parameter information to a limited number of characteristic velocity combinations via k-means cluster analysis. Then, for each zone (cluster) further parameters including uncertainties can be estimated. Analyses of horizontal and vertical fixation disparities indicated that the most prevalent type of disparate fixation is crossed (i.e., the left eye is located further to the right than the right eye) while the left eye frequently fixates somewhat above the right eye. The Gaussian distribution of the binocular fixation point peaked 2.6 cm in front of the plane of text, reflecting the prevalence of horizontally crossed fixations. Fixation disparity accumulates during the course of successive saccades and fixations within a line of text, but only to an extent that does not compromise single binocular vision. In reading, the version and vergence system interact in a way that is qualitatively similar to what has been observed in simple nonreading tasks. In this article, we elaborate upon an alternative approach to ASP that allows for incremental constructions. Our approach draws its basic intuitions from the area of default logics. We investigate the feasibility of the concept of semi-monotonicity known from default logics as a basis of incrementality. On the one hand, every logic program has at least one answer set in our alternative setting, which moreover can be constructed incrementally based on generating rules. On the other hand, the approach may produce answer sets lacking characteristic properties of standard answer sets, such as being a model of the given program. We show how integrity constraints can be used to re-establish such properties, even up to correspondence with standard answer sets. Furthermore, we develop an SLD-like proof procedure for our incremental approach to ASP, which allows for query-oriented computations. Also, we provide a characterization of our definition of answer sets via a modification of Clarks completion. Our spectroscopic follow-up observations confirmed the WR nature of this star (we named it WR 138a) and showed that it belongs to the WN8-9h subtype. We thereby add a new example to the known sample of late WN stars with circumstellar nebulae. We analysed the spectrum of WR 138a by using the Potsdam Wolf-Rayet (PoWR) model atmospheres, obtaining a stellar temperature of 40 kK. The stellar wind composition is dominated by helium with 20 per cent of hydrogen. The stellar spectrum is highly reddened and absorbed (EB- V = 2.4 mag, A(V) = 7.4 mag). Adopting a stellar luminosity of log L/L-circle dot = 5.3, the star has a mass-loss rate of 10-4.7 M- circle dot yr-1, and resides in a distance of 4.2 kpc. We measured the proper motion for WR 138a and found that it is a runaway star with a peculiar velocity of similar or equal to 50 km s-1. With new infrared instruments, this region is no longer obscured for the observer. Aims: For understanding these very massive clusters, it is essential to know their stellar inventory. We provide comprehensive spectroscopic data for the stellar population of the Quintuplet cluster that will form the basis of subsequent spectral analyses. Methods. Spectroscopic observations of the Quintuplet cluster were obtained with the Integral Field Spectrograph SINFONI-SPIFFI at the ESO-VLT. The inner part of the Quintuplet cluster was covered by 22 slightly overlapping fields, each of them of 8 '' x 8 '' in size. The spectral range comprises the near-IR K-band from 1.94 to 2.45 mu m. The 3D data cubes of the individual fields were flux-calibrated and combined to one contiguous cube, from which the spectra of all detectable point sources were extracted. Results: We present a catalog of 160 stellar sources in the inner part of the Quintuplet cluster. The flux-calibrated K-band spectra of 98 early-type stars and 62 late-type stars are provided as Online Material. Based on these spectra, we assign spectral types to all detected sources and derive synthetic Ks-band magnitudes. Our sample is complete to about the 13th K-magnitude. We report the detection of two hitherto unknown Wolf- Rayet stars of late WC type (WC9 or later). Radial velocities are measured and employed to assess the cluster membership. Being of spectral subtype WO2, WR 142 is a massive star in a very advanced evolutionary stage shortly before its explosion as a supernova or. gamma-ray burst. This is the first detection of X-ray emission from a WO- type star. We rule out any serendipitous X-ray sources within approximate to 1 '' of WR 142. WR 142 has an X- ray luminosity of L-X approximate to 7 x 10(30) erg s(-1), which constitutes only less than or similar to 10(-8) of its bolometric luminosity. The hard X-ray spectrum suggests a plasma temperature of about 100 MK. Commonly, X-ray emission from stellar winds is attributed to embedded shocks due to the intrinsic instability of the radiation driving. From qualitative considerations we conclude that this mechanism cannot account for the hardness of the observed radiation. There are no hints for a binary companion. Therefore the only remaining, albeit speculative explanation must refer to magnetic activity. Possibly related, WR 142 seems to rotate extremely fast, as indicated by the unusually round profiles of its optical emission lines. Our detection implies that the wind of WR 142 must be relatively transparent to X-rays, which can be due to strong wind ionization, wind clumping, or nonspherical geometry from rapid rotation.}, language = {en} }
