So lautet die Aussage eines ecuadorianischen Akademikers {\"u}ber Alexander von Humboldt. Eine Aussage, die sich freilich nur erkl{\"a}ren l{\"a}sst, wenn die Rezeption des deutschen Universalgelehrten im Zusammenhang mit dem ecuadorianischen Nationsbildungsprozess kritisch betrachtet wird. Der Artikel greift diesen Ansatz auf und untersucht den direkten und indirekten Einfluss des Naturforschers auf den diskursiven Prozess, in dem der nationale Raum wissenschaftlich, visuell und literarisch bearbeitet wurde. Illustriert wird dies anhand des geographischen Werkes von Manuel Villavicencio (1804-1871) und des Werks des Malers Juan August{\´i}n Guerrero (1818-1886). Gegenstand der Analyse wird schliesslich auch, wie durch das Humboldt-Bild einige zentrale Aspekte der „offiziellen" nationalen Identit{\"a}t gest{\"u}tzt werden konnten. Nach einem kurzen Ausflug in das Leben von Humboldts Begleiter steht im Zentrum der weiteren Ausf{\"u}hrungen die Frage, ob sein Tagebuch ein anderes Licht auf Humboldt und speziell auf den Aufstiegsversuch wirft.
