Humboldt „orientaliza" a Am{\´e}rica por medio de numerosas met{\´a}foras estereotipadas, de comparaciones cient{\´i}ficas y analog{\´i}as econ{\´o}mico-coloniales, y perpet{\´u}a a su vez un „Orientalismo" filol{\´o}gico como el que ha analizado Edward Said. Sin embargo, de manera gradual, la cr{\´i}tica autorreflexiva y una serie de sutiles inversiones erosionan las oposiciones binarias y las construcciones coloniales. El texto de Humboldt emplea primeramente patrones eurocentristas para luego deconstruirlos.   abstract  = {My essay attends to a number of passages in Alexander von Humboldt's Personal Narrative in which the Prussian explorer expresses anxiety about the apparent dangers posed by the overwhelmingly productive tropical landscapes he observes. In these passages, the excesses of an "exotic nature" threaten European identity and modes of civilization—and they trouble the accuracy of Humboldt's own observational project. I also explore Humboldt's related worry that South American vegetable (and visual) overload will exert a destabilizing effect on his aesthetic sensibility, disrupting his ability to represent the "New Continent" accurately in writing. Finally, I sketch the influence of Humboldt's representations of tropical excess on nineteenth-century British cultural thought and literary practice. Studying the instabilities experienced by Personal Narrative's expatriates and colonists promises to draw out important tensions latent in Humboldt's treatment of tropical landscape and to illuminate broader epistemological and aesthetic shifts being worked out during the period.},

  abstract  = {During his American expedition Humboldt grappled intensively with the iniquities of colonialism. In the year 1803, for example, he noted "that the idea of a colony is itself an immoral idea, this idea of a land which is obliged to pay dues to another country." The colonial powers, wrote Humboldt, support intolerance, repression and slavery. However, he did not express his criticism in public during the expedition but entrusted it only to good friends and his diary. The lecture treats Humboldt's political stance during the expedition, based on human rights and his communicative role as a research traveller who, having returned to Europe, made his criticism public. Central to the lecture are examples of Humboldt's criticism of representatives of the colonial system. These make clear which important impulses the researcher gave to the independence movement and to the politicians of the young American states.},

  abstract  = {Die Sicht, die Alexander von Humboldt von indianischer Kunst hatte, kann man an den Notizen in den Reisetageb{\"u}chern erkennen, die dank des unerm{\"u}dlichen Wirkens von Margot Faak zug{\"a}nglich sind, und an vielen Bemerkungen in seinen Publikationen. Man kann beobachten, dass der deutsche Gelehrte Probleme hatte, arch{\"a}ologische Objekte des vorspanischen Amerika als Kunstwerke zu verstehen. Ursache dessen war seine humanistische Erziehung, welche die klassische griechisch-r{\"o}mische Antike als {\"a}sthetischen Maßstab favorisierte. Ettes Analyse des Begriffs Humboltian writing wird unter Betonung des bibliographischen Hintergrunds die vernetzte Struktur des amerikanischen Reisewerks Alexander von Humboldts dargestellt. Die Komplexit{\"a}t seines Schreibens zeigt sich in mehreren Dimensionen: disziplin{\"a}re Aufsplittung, Hypertextstruktur der einzelnen Texte selbst, Multilingualit{\"a}t, Vernetzung mit anderen Werken Humboldts und seinem epistolarischen Nachlaß, sein wissenschaftliches Netzwerk in der scientific community. Diese Struktur wird bei einer rein linearen Lesart (die ein normales Buch nur zul{\"a}ßt) nicht vollst{\"a}ndig wahrgenommen, zumal es bisher keine mit Registern versehene Neuedition seines Reisewerks gibt, so daß eine digitale Bibliothek ein ad{\"a}quates Medium f{\"u}r die Darstellung des Humboldtschen Schreibstils und gleichzeitig der f{\"u}r ihn typischen Organisation des Wissens sein k{\"o}nnte.},

La forma de presentaci{\´o}n de Humboldt de sus investigaciones en la Pen{\´i}nsula es bastante curiosa, ya que a pesar del tono estrictamente cient{\´i}fico de su escrito, gu{\´i}a al lector a trav{\´e}s de una carta a su editor el profesor Berghaus, con la intercalaci{\´o}n de notas de su Diario y con datos obtenidos de sus corresponsales espa{\~n}oles.},

  abstract  = {Whilst the notebook belongs to the imagery of the enlightened scientist's persona (an auxiliary tool kept by his side to be hastily scribbled with data, when at the bench or in the field), it has been given little attention by historians of science, who are used to consider its manuscript pages as a documentary resource to complement the printed text, but rarely take the notebook as a material and cultural object by itself, the history and epistemology of which is to be explored. Only recently have new trends in the historiography, by historians of printed books and reading practices, and by social and cultural historians of knowledge, called for a fresh look and opened the way for new approaches. Taking Alexander von Humboldt as a paramount example, who expressly devoted his life to "observing and recording" the world, pen in hand, this paper explores the note-taking practices at work in his travel diaries and notebooks from the perspective of the history of scientific observation and cognitive practices. Four themes are successively considered : the question of method and apprenticeship ; the timing of note-taking practices ; the nature and status of the data jotted down on the page ; finally, their uses in the production of scientific knowledge. In the back and forth movement between the observation of the world and the writing of science, the notebook stood as a crucial intellectual step and cognitive tool.},

  abstract  = {The difficult publication history and expensive editions of Alexander von Humboldt's volumes on the expedition to the Americas have resulted in incomplete library holdings which has limited scholarly access and sometimes caused unbalanced scholarship. A plan for a Humboldt Digital Library examines the structures and features of this representational system in print and proposes models for converting these materials to electronic form. Several issues posed by Humboldt's works include: establishing authoritative standard editions in several languages, creating high-resolution access to the many visual innovations in the works, and using software to restore the grand concept that all of the separate disciplines of study can be seen as interrelated parts of the whole. Using techniques of geographic visualization, a prototype is planned which will connect this historical body of knowledge with modern scientific databases.},

Die Bedeutung der Reise Humboldts f{\"u}r Europa und Lateinamerika" behandelt der preußischen emprischen Universalgelehrten, in {\"U}bereinstimmung mit dem von Ottmar Ette entwickelten Konzept, als einen, wenn nicht den wichtigsten Begr{\"u}nder der westlichen Moderne. Im Gegensatz zu den bekannten Gr{\"u}ndern der Moderne (Descartes, Kant, Buffon, Schiller, Hegel, Marx ... etc.) war Humboldt Empiriker und Globaldenker und er tat dies auf transkulturelle Weise, manchmal auch schon auf interkulturelle Weise; allerdings meist auf Basis der r{\"o}misch-klassizistischen Denktradition und {\"A}sthetik Europas. Der Beitrag arbeitet drei Wissenstypen Humboldts heraus und versucht zu zeigen, dass der Universalismus Humboldt wichtige interkulturelle Grundlagen in der Kommunikation mit amerikanischen Gelehrten und im amerikanischen Empirismus ("lokales Wissen") hat. Die Bedeutung einer solchen Konzeption der Humboldt-Reise zeigt sich - in der Negierung - in den gegenw{\"a}rtigen Debatten um Diasporas und "Race" im atlantischen Westen ("Black Atlantic"). Humboldt Kenntnisse der amerikanischen Sklavereien und seine absolute Verurteilung der Sklaverei ist dabei nicht pr{\"a}sent.
