The nanoparticles led to improvements in dielectric properties, however they also reinforced the elastomer matrix. Comparing dielectric spectra of composites with untreated and surface-treated particles showed a measurable influence of the surface on the dielectric loss behaviour for high filler amounts, strongly indicating an improved host-guest interaction for the surface-treated particles. Breakdown strength was measured using a test bench and was found to be in good agreement with the results from the actuation measurements. Actuation responses predicted by a model for prestrained actuators agreed well with measurements up to a filler amount of 20\%(vol). Strong improvements in actuation behaviour were observed, with an optimum near 15\%(vol) nanoparticles, corresponding to a reduction in electrical field of 27\% for identical actuation strains. The use of physically crosslinking elastomer ensured the mechanical properties of the matrix elastomer were unchanged by nanoparticles effecting the crosslinking reaction, contrary to similar experiments performed with chemically crosslinking elastomers. This allows for a firm conclusion about the positive effects of surface-treated nanoparticles on actuation behavior.}, language = {en} } @phdthesis{Stoyanov2011, author = {Stoyanov, Hristiyan}, title = {Soft nanocomposites with enhanced electromechanical response for dielectric elastomer actuators}, url = {http://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:kobv:517-opus-51194}, school = {Universit{\"a}t Potsdam}, year = {2011}, abstract = {Electromechanical transducers based on elastomer capacitors are presently considered for many soft actuation applications, due to their large reversible deformation in response to electric field induced electrostatic pressure. The high operating voltage of such devices is currently a large drawback, hindering their use in applications such as biomedical devices and biomimetic robots, however, they could be improved with a careful design of their material properties. The main targets for improving their properties are increasing the relative permittivity of the active material, while maintaining high electric breakdown strength and low stiffness, which would lead to enhanced electrostatic storage ability and hence, reduced operating voltage. Improvement of the functional properties is possible through the use of nanocomposites. These exploit the high surface-to-volume ratio of the nanoscale filler, resulting in large effects on macroscale properties. This thesis explores several strategies for nanomaterials design. The resulting nanocomposites are fully characterized with respect to their electrical and mechanical properties, by use of dielectric spectroscopy, tensile mechanical analysis, and electric breakdown tests. First, nanocomposites consisting of high permittivity rutile TiO2 nanoparticles dispersed in thermoplastic block copolymer SEBS (poly-styrene-coethylene-co-butylene-co-styrene) are shown to exhibit permittivity increases of up to 3.7 times, leading to 5.6 times improvement in electrostatic energy density, but with a trade-off in mechanical properties (an 8-fold increase in stiffness). The variation in both electrical and mechanical properties still allows for electromechanical improvement, such that a 27 \% reduction of the electric field is found compared to the pure elastomer. Second, it is shown that the use of nanofiller conductive particles (carbon black (CB)) can lead to a strong increase of relative permittivity through percolation, however, with detrimental side effects. These are due to localized enhancement of the electric field within the composite, which leads to sharp reductions in electric field strength. Hence, the increase in permittivity does not make up for the reduction in breakdown strength in relation to stored electrical energy, which may prohibit their practical use. Third, a completely new approach for increasing the relative permittivity and electrostatic energy density of a polymer based on 'molecular composites' is presented, relying on chemically grafting soft π-conjugated macromolecules to a flexible elastomer backbone. Polarization caused by charge displacement along the conjugated backbone is found to induce a large and controlled permittivity enhancement (470 \% over the elastomer matrix), while chemical bonding, encapsulates the PANI chains manifesting in hardly any reduction in electric breakdown strength, and hence resulting in a large increase in stored electrostatic energy. This is shown to lead to an improvement in the sensitivity of the measured electromechanical response (83 \% reduction of the driving electric field) as well as in the maximum actuation strain (250 \%). These results represent a large step forward in the understanding of the strategies which can be employed to obtain high permittivity polymer materials with practical use for electro-elastomer actuation.}, language = {en} } @article{StoofLeichsenringJungingerOlakaetal.2011, author = {Stoof-Leichsenring, Kathleen Rosemarie and Junginger, Annett and Olaka, Lydia A. and Tiedemann, Ralph and Trauth, Martin H.}, title = {Environmental variability in Lake Naivasha, Kenya, over the last two centuries}, series = {Journal of paleolimnolog}, volume = {45}, journal = {Journal of paleolimnolog}, number = {3}, publisher = {Springer}, address = {Dordrecht}, issn = {0921-2728}, doi = {10.1007/s10933-011-9502-4}, pages = {353 -- 367}, year = {2011}, abstract = {Lake Naivasha, Kenya, is one of a number of freshwater lakes in the East African Rift System. Since the beginning of the twentieth century, it has experienced greater anthropogenic influence as a result of increasingly intensive farming of coffee, tea, flowers, and other horticultural crops within its catchment. The water-level history of Lake Naivasha over the past 200 years was derived from a combination of instrumental records and sediment data. In this study, we analysed diatoms in a lake sediment core to infer past lacustrine conductivity and total phosphorus concentrations. We also measured total nitrogen and carbon concentrations in the sediments. Core chronology was established by (210)Pb dating and covered a similar to 186-year history of natural (climatic) and human-induced environmental changes. Three stratigraphic zones in the core were identified using diatom assemblages. There was a change from littoral/epiphytic diatoms such as Gomphonema gracile and Cymbella muelleri, which occurred during a prolonged dry period from ca. 1820 to 1896 AD, through a transition period, to the present planktonic Aulacoseira sp. that favors nutrient-rich waters. This marked change in the diatom assemblage was caused by climate change, and later a strong anthropogenic overprint on the lake system. Increases in sediment accumulation rates since 1928, from 0.01 to 0.08 g cm(-2) year(-1) correlate with an increase in diatom-inferred total phosphorus concentrations since the beginning of the twentieth century. The increase in phosphorus accumulation suggests increasing eutrophication of freshwater Lake Naivasha. This study identified two major periods in the lake's history: (1) the period from 1820 to 1950 AD, during which the lake was affected mainly by natural climate variations, and (2) the period since 1950, during which the effects of anthropogenic activity overprinted those of natural climate variation.}, language = {en} } @phdthesis{StoofLeichsenring2011, author = {Stoof-Leichsenring, Kathleen Rosemarie}, title = {Genetic analysis of diatoms and rotifers in tropical Kenyan lake sediments}, address = {Potsdam}, year = {2011}, language = {en} } @article{StojanovicMarkovicKleinpeteretal.2011, author = {Stojanovic, Milovan and Markovic, Rade and Kleinpeter, Erich and Baranac-Stojanovic, Marija}, title = {Endo-Mode cyclizations of vinylogous N-acyliminium ions as a route to the synthesis of condensed thiazolidines}, series = {Tetrahedron}, volume = {67}, journal = {Tetrahedron}, number = {49}, publisher = {Elsevier}, address = {Oxford}, issn = {0040-4020}, doi = {10.1016/j.tet.2011.10.011}, pages = {9541 -- 9554}, year = {2011}, abstract = {endo-Mode cyclizations of vinylogous N-acyliminium ions incorporating heteroatom-based nucleophiles have been examined as a route to the synthesis of condensed thiazolidines. This method reveals accurate and precise Si isotope data on bulk materials, and at high spatial resolution, on the mineral scale. The following Si pools have been investigated: a) the Si source to soils on all major silicate minerals on thin sections from bedrock fragments in the soil profiles; b) bulk soils (particle size <2 mm) after fusion to glass beads with an iridium-strip heater or pressed into powder pellets: c) separated clay fractions as pressed powder pellets and e) separated phytoliths as pressed powder pellets. Multiple analyses of three rock standards, BHVO-2, AGV-1 and RGM-1 as fused glass beads and as pressed powder pellets, reveal delta(30)Si values within the expected range of igneous rocks. The MPI-DING reference glass KL2-G exhibits the same Si isotope composition after remelting by an iridium-strip heater showing that this technique does not alter the isotope composition of the glass. We used this approach to investigated two immature Cambisols developed on sandstone and paragneiss in the Black Forest (Germany), respectively. Bulk soils show a largely uniform Si isotope signature for different horizons and locations, which is close to those of primary quartz and feldspar with delta(30)Si values around -0.4 parts per thousand. Soil clay formation is associated with limited Si mobility, which preserves initial Si isotope signatures of parental minerals. An exception is the organic horizon of the paragneiss catchment where intense weathering leads to a high mobility of Si and significant negative isotope signatures as low as to -1.00 parts per thousand in bulk soils. Biogenic opal in the form of phytoliths, exhibits negative Si isotope signatures of about -0.4 parts per thousand. These results demonstrate that UV femtosecond laser ablation MC-ICP-MS provides a tool to characterize the Si isotope signature of the principle Si pools left behind after weathering and Si transport have altered soils. The technique used is a statistical correlation of resistivity and velocity values in parameter space. Regions of high probability of a coexisting pair of values for the two parameters are mapped back into the spatial domain, illustrating the geographical location of lithological classes. In this study, four regions of enhanced probability have been identified, and are remapped as four lithological classes. That the fault acts as an impermeable barrier to fluid flow is unusual for large fault zone, which often exhibit a fault zone characterized by high conductivity and low seismic velocity. At greater depths it is possible to resolve the Precambrian basement into two classes characterized by vastly different resistivity values but similar seismic velocities. Remarkably, preventive detention of suspected terrorists fluctuates between various legal regimes: In Europe, criminal law is predominantly used but special security orders are occasionally issued as well; Israel applies in part the law of international armed conflicts; and in the United States, detention under a new war premise has been claimed. This Article analyzes the response of the U.S. Supreme Court, the Israeli Supreme Court, and the European Court of Human Rights to legislative and executive policies asserting the power of preventive detention in the aftermath of September 11, 2001. The comparison exposes significant differences with regard to the application of international law, and most prominently concerning the underlying question of whether the struggle against terrorism should be considered a "war," or, perhaps more traditionally, a fight against crime. Despite the substantial discrepancies in these three jurisdictions, this Article argues that the similarities are actually more striking. Whereas no court has accepted any attempt to fight terrorism outside the bounds of law, the judges have not hesitated to stretch and blur the pertinent frameworks by extensive interpretation. Ultimately, it is questionable whether on account of the individual's rights the resulting flexibilities and uncertainties are justifiable. "I don't know what you mean by 'glory'," Alice said. Humpty Dumpty smiled contemptuously. "Of course you don't till I tell you. I meant 'there's a nice knock-down argument for you!" "But 'glory' doesn't mean 'a nice knock-down argument" Alice objected. We report two experiments that aimed to study how real-time simulation is affected by simultaneous action execution under conditions of full, partial or no overlap between observed and executed actions. This overlap was analysed by comparing the body sides and the movement kinematics involved in the observed and the executed action. While performing actions, participants observed point-light (PL) actions that were interrupted by an occluder, followed by a test pose. The task was to judge whether the test pose depicted a continuation of the occluded action in the same depth angle. Using a paradigm proposed by Graf et al., we independently manipulated the duration of the occluder and the temporal advance of the test pose relative to occlusion onset (occluder time and pose time, respectively). This paradigm allows the assessment of real-time simulation, based on prediction performance across different occluder time/pose time combinations (i.e., improved task performance with decreasing time distance between occluder time and pose time is taken to reflect real-time simulation). The PL actor could be perceived as from the front or back, as indicated by task instructions. In Experiment 1 (front view instructions), evidence of action simulation was obtained for partial overlap (i.e., observed and performed action corresponded either in body side or movement kinematics), but not for full or no overlap conditions. The same pattern was obtained in Experiment 2 (back view instructions), ruling out a spatial compatibility explanation for the real-time pattern observed. Our results suggest that motor processes affect action prediction and real-time simulation. Our parsers are simple modifications of two well-known dependency parsers, the transition-based Malt parser and the graph-based MST parser. While previous work on parsing with incomplete data has typically couched the task in frameworks of unsupervised or semi-supervised machine learning, we essentially treat it as a supervised problem. In particular, we propose what we call agnostic parsers which hide all fragmentation in the training data from their supervised components. We present experimental results with training data that was obtained by means of annotation projection. Annotation projection is a resource-lean technique which allows us to transfer annotations from one language to another within a parallel corpus. However, the output tends to be noisy and incomplete due to cross-lingual non-parallelism and error-prone word alignments. This makes the projected annotations a suitable test bed for our fragment parsers. Our results show that (i) dependency parsers trained on large amounts of projected annotations achieve higher accuracy than the direct projections, and that (ii) our agnostic fragment parsers perform roughly on a par with the original parsers which are trained only on strictly filtered, complete trees. Finally, (iii) when our fragment parsers are trained on artificially fragmented but otherwise gold standard dependencies, the performance loss is moderate even with up to 50\% of all edges removed.}, language = {en} } @phdthesis{Spoerr2011, author = {Spoerr, Kathrin}, title = {Recht und Revolution : deutsche {\"O}konomen und ihr Einfluss auf das Recht der Weimarer Republik - eine Zeitschriftenschau 1917 - 1920}, series = {Rechtshistorische Reihe}, volume = {412}, journal = {Rechtshistorische Reihe}, publisher = {Lang}, address = {Frankfurt am Main}, isbn = {978-3-631-60327-7}, issn = {0344-290X}, pages = {282 S.}, year = {2011}, language = {de} } @article{SpijkermanWacker2011, author = {Spijkerman, Elly and Wacker, Alexander}, title = {Interactions between P-limitation and different C conditions on the fatty acid composition of an extremophile microalga}, series = {Extremophiles : life under extreme conditions}, volume = {15}, journal = {Extremophiles : life under extreme conditions}, number = {5}, publisher = {Springer}, address = {Tokyo}, issn = {1431-0651}, doi = {10.1007/s00792-011-0390-3}, pages = {597 -- 609}, year = {2011}, abstract = {The extremophilic microalga Chlamydomonas acidophila inhabits very acidic waters (pH 2-3.5), where its growth is often limited by phosphorus (P) or colimited by P and inorganic carbon (CO(2)). Because this alga is a major food source for predators in acidic habitats, we studied its fatty acid content, which reflects their quality as food, grown under a combination of P-limited and different carbon conditions (either mixotrophically with light + glucose or at high or low CO(2), both without glucose). The fatty acid composition largely depended on the cellular P content: stringent P-limited cells had a higher total fatty acid concentration and had a lower percentage of polyunsaturated fatty acids. An additional limitation for CO(2) inhibited this decrease, especially reflected in enhanced concentrations of 18:3(9,12,15) and 16:4(3,7,10,13), resulting in cells relatively rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids under colimiting growth conditions. The percentage of polyunsaturated to total fatty acid content was positively related with maximum photosynthesis under all conditions applied. The two factors, P and CO(2), thus interact in their effect on the fatty acid composition in C. acidophila, and colimited cells P-limited algae can be considered a superior food source for herbivores because of the high total fatty acid content and relative richness in polyunsaturated fatty acids.}, language = {en} } @article{SpijkermandeCastroGaedke2011, author = {Spijkerman, Elly and de Castro, Francisco and Gaedke, Ursula}, title = {Independent Colimitation for Carbon Dioxide and Inorganic Phosphorus}, series = {PLoS one}, volume = {6}, journal = {PLoS one}, number = {12}, publisher = {PLoS}, address = {San Fransisco}, issn = {1932-6203}, doi = {10.1371/journal.pone.0028219}, pages = {12}, year = {2011}, abstract = {Simultaneous limitation of plant growth by two or more nutrients is increasingly acknowledged as a common phenomenon in nature, but its cellular mechanisms are far from understood. We investigated the uptake kinetics of CO(2) and phosphorus of the algae Chlamydomonas acidophila in response to growth at limiting conditions of CO(2) and phosphorus. In addition, we fitted the data to four different Monod-type models: one assuming Liebigs Law of the minimum, one assuming that the affinity for the uptake of one nutrient is not influenced by the supply of the other (independent colimitation) and two where the uptake affinity for one nutrient depends on the supply of the other (dependent colimitation). In addition we asked whether the physiological response under colimitation differs from that under single nutrient limitation. We found no negative correlation between the affinities for uptake of the two nutrients, thereby rejecting a dependent colimitation. Kinetic data were supported by a better model fit assuming independent uptake of colimiting nutrients than when assuming Liebigs Law of the minimum or a dependent colimitation. Results show that cell nutrient homeostasis regulated nutrient acquisition which resulted in a trade-off in the maximum uptake rates of CO(2) and phosphorus, possibly driven by space limitation on the cell membrane for porters for the different nutrients. Hence, the response to colimitation deviated from that to a single nutrient limitation. In conclusion, responses to single nutrient limitation cannot be extrapolated to situations where multiple nutrients are limiting, which calls for colimitation experiments and models to properly predict growth responses to a changing natural environment. These deviations from single nutrient limitation response under colimiting conditions and independent colimitation may also hold for other nutrients in algae and in higher plants.}, language = {en} } @article{Spijkerman2011, author = {Spijkerman, Elly}, title = {The expression of a carbon concentrating mechanism in Chlamydomonas acidophila under variable phosphorus, iron, and CO2 concentrations}, series = {Photosynthesis research}, volume = {109}, journal = {Photosynthesis research}, number = {1-3}, publisher = {Springer}, address = {Dordrecht}, issn = {0166-8595}, doi = {10.1007/s11120-010-9607-z}, pages = {179 -- 189}, year = {2011}, abstract = {The CO2 acquisition was analyzed in Chlamydomonas acidophila at pH 2.4 in a range of medium P and Fe concentrations and at high and low CO2 condition. The inorganic carbon concentrating factor (CCF) was related to cellular P quota (Q(p)), maximum CO2-uptake rate by photosynthesis (V-max; O-2), half saturation constant for CO2 uptake (K-0.5), and medium Fe concentration. There was no effect of the medium Fe concentration on the CCF. The CCF increased with increasing Q(p) in both high and low CO2 grown algae, but maximum Q(p) was 6-fold higher in the low CO2 cells. In high CO2 conditions, the CCF was low, ranging between 0.8 and 3.5. High CCF values up to 9.1 were only observed in CO2-limited cells, but P- and CO2-colimited cells had a low CCF. High CCF did not relate with a low K-0.5 as all CO2-limited cells had a low K-0.5 (<4 mu M CO2). High Ci-pools in cells with high Qp suggested the presence of an active CO2-uptake mechanism. The CCF also increased with increasing V-max; O-2 which reflect an adaptation to the nutrient in highest demand (CO2) under balanced growth conditions. It is proposed that the size of the CCF in C. acidophila is more strongly related to porter density for CO2 uptake (reflected in V-max; O-2) and less- to high-affinity CO2 uptake (low K-0.5) at balanced growth. The northern margin of the Pamir salient indented northward by similar to 300 km during the late Cenozoic, accommodated by south-dipping intracontinental subduction along the Main Pamir Thrust (MPT) coupled to strike-slip faults on the eastern flank of the orogen and both strike-slip and thrust faults on the western margin. The Kashgar-Yecheng transfer system (KYTS) is the main dextral slip shear zone separating Tarim from the Eastern Pamir, with an estimated cumulative offset of similar to 280 km at an average late Cenozoic dextral slip rate of 11-15 mm/a (Cowgill, 2010). In order to better constrain the slip history of the KYTS, we collected thermochronologic samples along the eastward-flowing, deeply incised, antecedent Tashkorgan-Yarkand River, which crosses the fault system on the eastern flank of the orogen. We present 29 new biotite (40)Ar/(39)Ar ages, apatite and zircon (U-Th-Sm)/He ages, and apatite fission track (AFT) analysis, combined with published muscovite and biotite (40)Ar/(39)Ar and AFT data, to create a unique thermochronologic dataset in this poorly studied and remote region. We constrain the timing of four major N-trending faults: the latter three are strands of the KYTS. The westernmost, the Kuke fault, experienced significant dip-slip, west-side-up displacement between > 12 and 6 Ma. To the east, within the KYTS, our new thermochronologic data and geomorphic observations suggest that the Kumtag and Kusilaf dextral slip faults have been inactive since at least 3-5 Ma. Long-term incision rates across the Aertashi dextral slip fault, the easternmost strand of the KYTS, are compatible with slow horizontal slip rates of 1.7-5.3 mm/a over the past 3 to 5 Ma. In summary, these data show that the slip rate of the KYTS decreased substantially during the late Miocene or Pliocene. Furthermore, Miocene-present regional kinematic reconstructions suggest that this deceleration reflects the substantial increase of northward motion of Tarim rather than a significant decrease of the northward velocity of the Pamir. To cope with the complexity of these models, business process model abstraction has been introduced recently. Its goal is to derive from a detailed process model several abstract models that provide a high-level understanding of the process. While techniques for constructing abstract models are reported in the literature, little is known about the relationships between process instances and abstract models. In this paper we show how the state of an abstract activity can be calculated from the states of related, detailed process activities as they happen. The approach uses activity state propagation. With state uniqueness and state transition correctness we introduce formal properties that improve the understanding of state propagation. Algorithms to check these properties are devised. Finally, we use behavioral profiles to identify and classify behavioral inconsistencies in abstract process models that might occur, once activity state propagation is used.}, language = {en} } @phdthesis{Smirnov2011, author = {Smirnov, Sergey}, title = {Business process model abstraction}, url = {http://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:kobv:517-opus-60258}, school = {Universit{\"a}t Potsdam}, year = {2011}, abstract = {Business process models are used within a range of organizational initiatives, where every stakeholder has a unique perspective on a process and demands the respective model. As a consequence, multiple process models capturing the very same business process coexist. Keeping such models in sync is a challenge within an ever changing business environment: once a process is changed, all its models have to be updated. Due to a large number of models and their complex relations, model maintenance becomes error-prone and expensive. Against this background, business process model abstraction emerged as an operation reducing the number of stored process models and facilitating model management. Business process model abstraction is an operation preserving essential process properties and leaving out insignificant details in order to retain information relevant for a particular purpose. Process model abstraction has been addressed by several researchers. The focus of their studies has been on particular use cases and model transformations supporting these use cases. This thesis systematically approaches the problem of business process model abstraction shaping the outcome into a framework. We investigate the current industry demand in abstraction summarizing it in a catalog of business process model abstraction use cases. The thesis focuses on one prominent use case where the user demands a model with coarse-grained activities and overall process ordering constraints. We develop model transformations that support this use case starting with the transformations based on process model structure analysis. Further, abstraction methods considering the semantics of process model elements are investigated. First, we suggest how semantically related activities can be discovered in process models-a barely researched challenge. The thesis validates the designed abstraction methods against sets of industrial process models and discusses the method implementation aspects. Second, we develop a novel model transformation, which combined with the related activity discovery allows flexible non-hierarchical abstraction. Therefore, it is advisable to refer in end group analysis to the spectral parameters of low molar mass analogues of the active polymer chain ends, rather than to rely on the specific RAFT agent engaged in the polymerisation. When using appropriate conditions, the quantification of the thiocarbonyl end-groups via the pi-pi* band of the thiocarbonyl moiety around 300-310 nm allows a facile, sensitive and surprisingly precise estimation of the number average molar mass of the polymers produced, without the need of particular end group labels. This article presents two empirical studies that examine whether this property of focus is independent of contextual conditions. The syntactic operation at issue is object-fronting in German, Spanish, Greek, and Hungarian licensed by contexts involving focus on the object constituent. This operation evokes the intuition that the fronted referent excludes some or all relevant alternatives. The presented experiments deal with the question whether this interpretative property obligatorily accompanies the operation at issue or not. The empirical findings show that in German, Spanish, and Greek this intuition depends on properties of the context and is sensitive to the interaction with further discourse factors (in particular, the predictability of the referent). Hungarian displays a different data pattern: our data does not provide evidence that the syntactic operation at issue depends on the context or interacts with further discourse factors. Multiple time stepping schemes offer only modest improvements, and implicit integrators are costly and inaccurate. The best approach may be to actually remove the highest frequency oscillations by constraining bond lengths and bond angles, thus permitting perhaps a 4-fold increase in the step size. However, omitting degrees of freedom produces errors in statistical averages, and rigid angles do not bend for strong excluded volume forces. These difficulties can be addressed by an enhanced treatment of holonomic constrained dynamics using ideas from papers of Fixman (1974) and Reich (1995, 1999). In particular, the 1995 paper proposes the use of "flexible" constraints, and the 1999 paper uses a modified potential energy function with rigid constraints to emulate flexible constraints. Presented here is a more direct and rigorous derivation of the latter approach, together with justification for the use of constraints in molecular modeling. Therefore, a better understanding of the relation between these stresses and the socio-ecological systems is important for advancing dryland development. The concept of vulnerability as applied in this dissertation describes this relation as encompassing the exposure to climate, market and other stresses as well as the sensitivity of the systems to these stresses and their capacity to adapt. With regard to the interest in improving environmental and living conditions in drylands, this dissertation aims at a meaningful generalisation of heterogeneous vulnerability situations. A pattern recognition approach based on clustering revealed typical vulnerability-creating mechanisms at global and local scales. One study presents the first analysis of dryland vulnerability with global coverage at a sub-national resolution. The cluster analysis resulted in seven typical patterns of vulnerability according to quantitative indication of poverty, water stress, soil degradation, natural agro-constraints and isolation. Independent case studies served to validate the identified patterns and to prove the transferability of vulnerability-reducing approaches. Due to their worldwide coverage, the global results allow the evaluation of a specific system's vulnerability in its wider context, even in poorly-documented areas. Moreover, climate vulnerability of smallholders was investigated with regard to their food security in the Peruvian Altiplano. Four typical groups of households were identified in this local dryland context using indicators for harvest failure risk, agricultural resources, education and non-agricultural income. An elaborate validation relying on independently acquired information demonstrated the clear correlation between weather-related damages and the identified clusters. It also showed that household-specific causes of vulnerability were consistent with the mechanisms implied by the corresponding patterns. The synthesis of the local study provides valuable insights into the tailoring of interventions that reflect the heterogeneity within the social group of smallholders. The conditions necessary to identify typical vulnerability patterns were summarised in five methodological steps. They aim to motivate and to facilitate the application of the selected pattern recognition approach in future vulnerability analyses. The five steps outline the elicitation of relevant cause-effect hypotheses and the quantitative indication of mechanisms as well as an evaluation of robustness, a validation and a ranking of the identified patterns. The precise definition of the hypotheses is essential to appropriately quantify the basic processes as well as to consistently interpret, validate and rank the clusters. In particular, the five steps reflect scale-dependent opportunities, such as the outcome-oriented aspect of validation in the local study. Furthermore, the clusters identified in Northeast Brazil were assessed in the light of important endogenous processes in the smallholder systems which dominate this region. In order to capture these processes, a qualitative dynamic model was developed using generalised rules of labour allocation, yield extraction, budget constitution and the dynamics of natural and technological resources. The model resulted in a cyclic trajectory encompassing four states with differing degree of criticality. The joint assessment revealed aggravating conditions in major parts of the study region due to the overuse of natural resources and the potential for impoverishment. The changes in vulnerability-creating mechanisms identified in Northeast Brazil are well-suited to informing local adjustments to large-scale intervention programmes, such as "Avan{\c{c}}a Brasil". Overall, the categorisation of a limited number of typical patterns and dynamics presents an efficient approach to improving our understanding of dryland vulnerability. Here, we address these issues using the two closely related species Capsella grandiflora (the ancestral outbreeder) and red shepherd's purse (Capsella rubella, the derived selfer). In C. rubella, petal size has been decreased by shortening the period of proliferative growth. Using interspecific recombinant inbred lines, we show that differences in petal size and flower opening between the two species each have a complex genetic basis involving allelic differences at multiple loci. An intraspecific cross within C. rubella suggests that flower size and opening have been decreased in the C. rubella lineage before its extensive geographical spread. We propose that poly(ethylene imine) acts as a proton acceptor (weak buffer), which accelerates the transformation from brushite to HAP by taking up the protons that are released from the calcium phosphate precipitate during the phase transformation.}, language = {en} } @article{ShinZoellerHolschneideretal.2011, author = {Shin, Seoleun and Z{\"o}ller, Gert and Holschneider, Matthias and Reich, Sebastian}, title = {A multigrid solver for modeling complex interseismic stress fields}, series = {Computers \& geosciences : an international journal devoted to the publication of papers on all aspects of geocomputation and to the distribution of computer programs and test data sets ; an official journal of the International Association for Mathematical Geology}, volume = {37}, journal = {Computers \& geosciences : an international journal devoted to the publication of papers on all aspects of geocomputation and to the distribution of computer programs and test data sets ; an official journal of the International Association for Mathematical Geology}, number = {8}, publisher = {Elsevier}, address = {Oxford}, issn = {0098-3004}, doi = {10.1016/j.cageo.2010.11.011}, pages = {1075 -- 1082}, year = {2011}, abstract = {We develop a multigrid, multiple time stepping scheme to reduce computational efforts for calculating complex stress interactions in a strike-slip 2D planar fault for the simulation of seismicity. The key elements of the multilevel solver are separation of length scale, grid-coarsening, and hierarchy. In this study the complex stress interactions are split into two parts: the first with a small contribution is computed on a coarse level, and the rest for strong interactions is on a fine level. This partition leads to a significant reduction of the number of computations. The reduction of complexity is even enhanced by combining the multigrid with multiple time stepping. Computational efficiency is enhanced by a factor of 10 while retaining a reasonable accuracy, compared to the original full matrix-vortex multiplication. The accuracy of solution and computational efficiency depend on a given cut-off radius that splits multiplications into the two parts. This model is based on the hypothesis that the time delay before the onset of the power-law aftershock decay rate decreases as the level of stress and the seismogenic potential increase. Here, we estimate this time delay from < t(g)>, the time constant of the Omori-Utsu law. To isolate space-time regions with a relative high level of stress, the single local variable of our forecast model is the E-a value, the ratio between the long-term and short-term estimations of < t(g)>. When and where the E-a value exceeds a given threshold (i.e., the c value is abnormally small), an alarm is issued, and an earthquake is expected to occur during the next time step. Retrospective tests show that the EAST model has better predictive power than a stationary reference model based on smoothed extrapolation of past seismicity. The official prospective test for California started on 1 July 2009 in the testing center of the Collaboratory for the Study of Earthquake Predictability (CSEP). During the first nine months, 44 M >= 4 earthquakes occurred in the testing area. For this time period, the EAST model has better predictive power than the reference model at a 1\% level of significance. Because the EAST model has also a better predictive power than several time-varying clustering models tested in CSEP at a 1\% level of significance, we suggest that our successful prospective results are not due only to the space-time clustering of aftershocks.}, language = {en} } @article{ShaydukNavirianLeitenbergeretal.2011, author = {Shayduk, Roman and Navirian, Hengameh and Leitenberger, Wolfram and Goldshteyn, Jevgenij and Vrejoiu, Ionela and Weinelt, Martin and Gaal, Peter and Herzog, Marc and von Korff Schmising, Clemens and Bargheer, Matias}, title = {Nanoscale heat transport studied by high-resolution time-resolved x-ray diffraction}, series = {New journal of physics : the open-access journal for physics}, volume = {13}, journal = {New journal of physics : the open-access journal for physics}, number = {11}, publisher = {IOP Publ. Transient thermal lattice expansion was determined with an accuracy of 10(-7), corresponding to a sensitivity to temperature changes down to 0.01 K. We follow the heat flow within the SL and into the substrate after the impulsive laser heating leads to a small temperature rise of Delta T = 6 K. The transient lattice temperature can be simulated very well using the bulk heat conductivities. We show that such correspondences offer only a partial understanding of the relation between syllabic organisation and continuous indices of that organisation. We analyse the failure of the diagnostics and put forth a new approach in which different phonological organisations prescribe different ways in which phonetic indices change as phonetic parameters are scaled. In TAL and BTR, we found a specific haplotype at high frequency, which was absent elsewhere, indicating a genetically distinct population in these regions. Within the TAL region, there is some evidence for genetic isolation of the tiger populations west of river Ganges, i.e., in the western part of Rajaji National Park (RNP). Although the river itself might not constitute a significant barrier for tigers, recent human-induced changes in habitat and degradation of the Motichur-Chilla Corridor connecting the two sides of the tiger habitat of RNP might effectively prevent genetic exchange. A cohesive population is observed for the rest of the TAL. Even the more eastern BTR belongs genetically to this unit, despite the present lack of a migration corridor between BTR and TAL. However, so far no drugs have been approved for the treatment of acute kidney failure and only a few for the treatment of chronic kidney disease (CKD). We analysed the effect of SLV 338, a neutral endopeptidase (NEP)/endothelin converting enzyme (ECE)-inhibitor in animal models of acute kidney failure as well as chronic renal failure. Methods: Acute renal failure was induced in male Wistar rats by uninephrectomy and clamping of the remaining kidney for 55 minutes. SLV338 (total dose: 4.9 mg/kg) or vehicle was continuously infused for 2 hours (starting 20 minutes prior to clamping). Sham operated animals served as controls. Plasma creatinine was measured at baseline and day 2 and 8 after renal ischemia-reperfusion. Hypertensive renal damage was induced in male Sprague Dawley rats by nitric oxide deficiency using L-NAME (50 mg/kg per day, added to drinking water for 4 weeks). One group was treated over the same time period with SLV338 (30 mg/kg per day, mixed with food). Systolic blood pressure was monitored weekly. At study end, urine and blood samples were collected and kidneys were harvested. Results: Acute renal ischemia-reperfusion caused a 5-fold plasma creatinine elevation (day 2), which was significantly attenuated by more than 50 \% in animals treated with SLV338 (p < 0.05). Renal failure was accompanied by a 67 \% mortality in vehicle-treated rats, but only 20 \% after SLV338 treatment (p = 0.03 compared to sham controls). Chronic L-NAME administration caused hypertension, urinary albumin excretion, glomerulosclerosis, renal arterial remodelling, and renal interstitial fibrosis. Treatment with SLV338 did not significantly affect blood pressure, but abolished renal tissue damage (interstitial fibrosis, glomerulosclerosis, renal arterial remodelling (p < 0.05 versus L-NAME group in each case). Conclusions: The dual ECE/NEP inhibitor SLV338 preserves kidney function and reduces mortality in severe acute ischemic renal failure.
