  abstract  = {In aquatic ecosystems, light availability can significantly influence microbial turnover of terrestrial organic matter through associated metabolic interactions between phototrophic and heterotrophic communities. However, particularly in streams, microbial functions vary significantly with the structure of the streambed, that is the distribution and spatial arrangement of sediment grains in the streambed. It is therefore essential to elucidate how environmental factors synergistically define the microbial turnover of terrestrial organic matter in order to better understand the ecological role of photo-heterotrophic interactions in stream ecosystem processes. In outdoor experimental streams, we examined how the structure of streambeds modifies the influence of light availability on microbial turnover of leaf carbon (C). Furthermore, we investigated whether the studied relationships of microbial leaf C turnover to environmental conditions are affected by flow intermittency commonly occurring in streams. We applied leaves enriched with a 13C-stable isotope tracer and combined quantitative and isotope analyses. We thereby elucidated whether treatment induced changes in C turnover were associated with altered use of leaf C within the microbial food web. Moreover, isotope analyses were combined with measurements of microbial community composition to determine whether changes in community function were associated with a change in community composition. In this study, we present evidence, that environmental factors interactively determine how phototrophs and heterotrophs contribute to leaf C turnover. Light availability promoted the utilization of leaf C within the microbial food web, which was likely associated with a promoted availability of highly bioavailable metabolites of phototrophic origin. However, our results additionally confirm that the structure of the streambed modifies light-related changes in microbial C turnover. From our observations, we conclude that the streambed structure influences the strength of photo-heterotrophic interactions by defining the spatial availability of algal metabolites in the streambed and the composition of microbial communities. Collectively, our multifactorial approach provides valuable insights into environmental controls on the functioning of stream ecosystems.},

  abstract  = {Microbial processing of organic matter (OM) in the freshwater biosphere is a key component of global biogeochemical cycles. Freshwaters receive and process valuable amounts of leaf OM from their terrestrial landscape. These terrestrial subsidies provide an essential source of energy and nutrients to the aquatic environment as a function of heterotrophic processing by fungi and bacteria. Particularly in freshwaters with low in-situ primary production from algae (microalgae, cyanobacteria), microbial turnover of leaf OM significantly contributes to the productivity and functioning of freshwater ecosystems and not least their contribution to global carbon cycling. Based on differences in their chemical composition, it is believed that leaf OM is less bioavailable to microbial heterotrophs than OM photosynthetically produced by algae. Especially particulate leaf OM, consisting predominantly of structurally complex and aromatic polymers, is assumed highly resistant to enzymatic breakdown by microbial heterotrophs. However, recent research has demonstrated that OM produced by algae promotes the heterotrophic breakdown of leaf OM in aquatic ecosystems, with profound consequences for the metabolism of leaf carbon (C) within microbial food webs. In my thesis, I aimed at investigating the underlying mechanisms of this so called priming effect of algal OM on the use of leaf C in natural microbial communities, focusing on fungi and bacteria. The works of my thesis underline that algal OM provides highly bioavailable compounds to the microbial community that are quickly assimilated by bacteria (Paper II). The substrate composition of OM pools determines the proportion of fungi and bacteria within the microbial community (Paper I). Thereby, the fraction of algae OM in the aquatic OM pool stimulates the activity and hence contribution of bacterial communities to leaf C turnover by providing an essential energy and nutrient source for the assimilation of the structural complex leaf OM substrate. On the contrary, the assimilation of algal OM remains limited for fungal communities as a function of nutrient competition between fungi and bacteria (Paper I, II). In addition, results provide evidence that environmental conditions determine the strength of interactions between microalgae and heterotrophic bacteria during leaf OM decomposition (Paper I, III). However, the stimulatory effect of algal photoautotrophic activities on leaf C turnover remained significant even under highly dynamic environmental conditions, highlighting their functional role for ecosystem processes (Paper III). The results of my thesis provide insights into the mechanisms by which algae affect the microbial turnover of leaf C in freshwaters. This in turn contributes to a better understanding of the function of algae in freshwater biogeochemical cycles, especially with regard to their interaction with the heterotrophic community.},

Es wird gezeigt, dass im Beispiel der Kreisverwaltung Potsdam Mittelmark die subjektive Wahrnehmung der LOB durch den einzelnen Besch{\"a}ftigten dar{\"u}ber entscheidet, ob dessen Motivation verst{\"a}rkt oder verdr{\"a}ngt wird. Jene Besch{\"a}ftigten, die sich durch die LOB kontrolliert f{\"u}hlen, weisen eine signifikant geringere PSM und intrinsische Motivation als diejenigen auf, die die LOB als f{\"o}rdernd wahrnehmen. Als zentraler Faktor f{\"u}r das Urteil der Besch{\"a}ftigten wird die wahrgenommene Fairness des Systems identifiziert.},

  abstract  = {Military conflicts and wars affect a country's development in various dimensions. Rising inflation rates are a potentially important economic effect associated with conflict. High inflation can undermine investment, weigh on private consumption, and threaten macroeconomic stability. Furthermore, these effects are not necessarily restricted to the locality of the conflict, but can also spill over to other countries. Therefore, to understand how conflict affects the economy and to make a more comprehensive assessment of the costs of armed conflict, it is important to take inflationary effects into account. To disentangle the conflict-inflation-nexus and to quantify this relationship, we conduct a panel analysis for 175 countries over the period 1950-2019. To capture indirect inflationary effects, we construct a distance based spillover index. In general, the results of our analysis confirm a statistically significant positive direct association between conflicts and inflation rates. This finding is robust across various model specifications. Moreover, our results indicate that conflict induced inflation is not solely driven by increasing money supply. Furthermore, we document a statistically significant positive indirect association between conflicts and inflation rates in uninvolved countries.},

  abstract  = {In light of climate change mitigation efforts, revenues from climate policies are growing, with no consensus yet on how they should be used. Potential efficiency gains from reducing distortionary taxes and the distributional implications of different revenue recycling schemes are currently debated. To account for households heterogeneity and dynamic trade-offs, we study the macroeconomic and welfare performance of different revenue recycling schemes using an Environmental Two-Agent New-Keynesian model, calibrated on the German economy. We find that, in the long run, welfare gains are higher when revenues are used to reduce distortionary taxes on capital, but this comes at the cost of higher inequality: while all households prefer labor income tax reductions to lump-sum transfers, only financially unconstrained households are better off when reducing taxes on capital income. Interestingly, we find that over the transition period relevant to meet short-medium run climate targets, labor income tax cuts are the most efficient and equitable instrument.},

  abstract  = {Promoting the decarbonization of economic activity through climate policies raises many questions. From a macroeconomic perspective, it is important to understand how these policies perform under uncertainty, how they affect short-run dynamics and to what extent they have distributional effects. In addition, uncertainties directly associated with climate policies, such as uncertainty about the carbon budget or emission intensities, become relevant aspects. We study the implications of emission reduction schemes within a Two-Agent New-Keynesian (TANK) model. This quantitative exercise, based on data for the German economy, provides various insights. In the light of frictions and fluctuations, compared to other instruments, a carbon price (i.e. tax) is associated with lower volatility in output and consumption. In terms of aggregate welfare, price instruments are found to be preferable. Conditional on the distribution of revenues from climate policies, quantity instruments can exert regressive effects, posing a larger economic loss on wealth-poor households, whereas price instruments are moderately progressive. Finally, we find that unexpected changes in climate policies can induce substantial aggregate adjustments. With uncertainty about the carbon budget, the costs of adjustment are larger under quantity instruments.},

  abstract  = {Background: The concept self-compassion (SC), a special way of being compassionate with oneself while dealing with stressful life circumstances, has attracted increasing attention in research over the past two decades. Research has already shown that SC has beneficial effects on affective well-being and other mental health outcomes. However, little is known in which ways SC might facilitate our affective well-being in stressful situations. Hence, a central concern of this dissertation was to focus on the question which underlying processes might influence the link between SC and affective well-being. Two established components in stress processing, which might also play an important role in this context, could be the amount of experienced stress and the way of coping with a stressor. Thus, using a multi-method approach, this dissertation aimed at finding to which extent SC might help to alleviate the experienced stress and promotes the use of more salutary coping, while dealing with stressful circumstances. These processes might ultimately help improve one's affective well-being. Derived from that, it was hypothesized that more SC is linked to less perceived stress and intensified use of salutary coping responses. Additionally, it was suggested that perceived stress and coping mediate the relation between SC and affective well-being. Method: The research questions were targeted in three single studies and one meta-study. To test my assumptions about the relations of SC and coping in particular, a systematic literature search was conducted resulting in k = 136 samples with an overall sample size of N = 38,913. To integrate the z-transformed Pearson correlation coefficients, random-effects models were calculated. All hypotheses were tested with a three-wave cross-lagged design in two short-term longitudinal online studies assessing SC, perceived stress and coping responses in all waves. The first study explored the assumptions in a student sample (N = 684) with a mean age of 27.91 years over a six-week period, whereas the measurements were implemented in the GESIS Panel (N = 2934) with a mean age of 52.76 years analyzing the hypotheses in a populationbased sample across eight weeks. Finally, an ambulatory assessment study was designed to expand the findings of the longitudinal studies to the intraindividual level. Thus, a sample of 213 participants completed questionnaires of momentary SC, perceived stress, engagement and disengagement coping, and affective well-being on their smartphones three times per day over seven consecutive days. The data was processed using 1-1-1 multilevel mediation analyses. Results: Results of the meta-analysis indicated that higher SC is significantly associated with more use of engagement coping and less use of disengagement coping. Considering the relations between SC and stress processing variables in all three single studies, cross-lagged paths from the longitudinal data, as well as multilevel modeling paths from the ambulatory assessment data indicated a notable relation between all relevant stress variables. As expected, results showed a significant negative relation between SC and perceived stress and disengagement coping, as well as a positive connection with engagement coping responses at the dispositional and intra-individual level. However, considering the mediational hypothesis, the most promising pathway in the link between SC and affective well-being turned out to be perceived stress in all three studies, while effects of the mediational pathways through coping responses were less robust. Conclusion: Thus, a more self-compassionate attitude and higher momentary SC, when needed in specific situations, can help to engage in effective stress processing. Considering the underlying mechanisms in the link between SC and affective well-being, stress perception in particular seemed to be the most promising candidate for enhancing affective well-being at the dispositional and at the intraindividual level. Future research should explore the pathways between SC and affective well-being in specific contexts and samples, and also take into account additional influential factors.},

Der Zugang zu Verwaltungsprozessen wird auch zuk{\"u}nftig in erster Linie {\"u}ber Formulare erfolgen, allerdings in elektronischer Form.   abstract  = {This study investigates how tone at the top, implemented by top management, and tone at the bottom, in an employee's immediate work environment, determine noncompliance. We focus on the disallowed actions of employees that improve their own and, in turn, the company's performance, referred to as performance-improving noncompliant behavior (PINC behavior). We conduct a survey of German sales employees to investigate specifically how, on the one hand, (1) corporate rules and (2) performance pressure, both implemented by top management, and, on the other hand, (3) others' PINC expectations and (4) others' PINC behavior, both arising from the employee's immediate work environment, influence PINC behavior. When considered in isolation, we find that corporate rules, as top management's main instrument to guide employee behavior, decrease employee PINC behavior. However, this effect is negatively influenced by the employees' immediate work environment when employees are expected to engage in PINC or when others engage in PINC. In contrast, even though top management places great performance pressure on employees, that by itself does not increase PINC behavior. Overall, our study informs practitioners and researchers about whether and how the four determinants increase or decrease employees' PINC behavior, which is important to comprehend triggers and to counteract such misconduct.},

Das Konzept condominio scheint zun{\"a}chst die ideale Antwort auf zahlreiche Handlungsprobleme zu sein; das Wohnen im abgeschlossenen Wohnviertel gibt das Gef{\"u}hl der Sicherheit und Kontrolle der unmittelbaren Umgebung und ist durch seine Exklusivit{\"a}t gleichzeitig ein willkommenes Statussymbol. Erst auf den zweiten Blick wird sichtbar, was das condominio nicht leisten kann und welche weiteren Probleme mit dem Wohnen im abgeschlossenen Viertel entstehen. Im Laufe der Analyse wurde jedoch die trotz aller Problemlagen essentielle Bedeutung des condominios f{\"u}r ihre Bewohner erkennbar. Die neue Wohnform der unteren Mittelschicht ist nicht nur ein Produkt der sich in ihren Potentialen, Anspr{\"u}chen und Werten ver{\"a}ndernden Anwohner. Of particular interest are those structures—knots, links and weavings—which are composed locally of simple twisted strands and are globally symmetric. This paper considers the symmetric tangling of multiple 2-periodic honeycomb networks. We do this using a constructive methodology borrowing elements of graph theory, low-dimensional topology and geometry.   abstract  = {In vorliegender Arbeit werden die Gefahren und Chancen des gemeinschaftlichen Zusammenlebens im Exil am Beispiel der ehemaligen Colonia Dignidad in Chile analysiert. Die Colonia Dignidad (dt.: Kolonie der W{\"u}rde) wurde 1961 von Mitgliedern einer deutschen Sekte im Zentrum des Landes, ca. 400 km s{\"u}dlich von Santiago entfernt, gegr{\"u}ndet. Nach außen pr{\"a}sentierte sich die Gemeinschaft als gl{\"u}ckliche und zufriedene deutsche Enklave, die ihre heimatlichen Traditionen und Br{\"a}uche im Ausland weiterhin pflegt. Mit dem Ende der Milit{\"a}rdiktatur unter Augusto Pinochet 1990 und dem damit verbundenen Wegfall der politischen R{\"u}ckendeckung der Gemeinschaft, begann die chilenische Justiz die schon l{\"a}nger bestehenden Vorw{\"u}rfe gegen den damaligen Sektenf{\"u}hrer Paul Sch{\"a}fer, u. a. wegen Kindesmissbrauchs und Folter an chilenischen Oppositionellen w{\"a}hrend der Milit{\"a}rdiktatur, zu untersuchen. Dem chilenischen Haftbefehl acht Jahre sp{\"a}ter entzog sich Paul Sch{\"a}fer durch seine Flucht nach Argentinien. Die zur{\"u}ckbleibenden Mitglieder der Colonia Dignidad waren aufgrund des einsetzenden Zerfalls der alten Gemeinschaftsordnung gezwungen, sich ein neues Gemeinschaftskonzept zu erarbeiten, eines, in dem die bisher so dominante F{\"u}hrerfigur fehlte. Sowohl das Gemeinschaftsleben in der Colonia Dignidad zwischen 1961 und 1998 als auch das Zusammenleben in der heutigen Villa Baviera ab 1998 wird anhand der Theorien zur Gemeinschaftsforschung von Ferdinand T{\"o}nnies, Georg Vobruba, Zygmunt Baumann, Matthias Grundmann und Stephan Drucks analysiert. Im Findungsprozess eines neuen Gemeinschaftskonzeptes waren die Mitglieder der ehemaligen Colonia Dignidad gezwungen, sich mit der Vergangenheit auseinanderzusetzen. In diesem Zusammenhang wird der Frage nachgegangen, inwiefern eine Aufarbeitung der Vergangenheit (memoria) im kulturwissenschaftlichen und psychologischen Sinne stattfand bzw. stattfindet und wenn ja, wie sich diese gestaltete bzw. gestaltet. Hierzu wird untersucht, welche staatlichen Maßnahmen zur Unterst{\"u}tzung des Neuanfangs der Gemeinschaft getroffen wurden und welchen Erfolg diese Maßnahmen hatten. Basierend auf den daraus gewonnenen Resultaten und der aktuellen Selbstdarstellung der Villa Baviera in ihrer Webpr{\"a}senz, wird das neue Gemeinschaftskonzept der ehemaligen Colonia Dignidad auf die Chancen des Zusammenlebens hin analysiert. Weiterf{\"u}hrend werden Konzepte zum kollektiven Ged{\"a}chtnis untersucht, von dem „Familienged{\"a}chtnis" auf ein „Gemeinschaftsged{\"a}chtnis" {\"u}bertragen und mit der Frage nach der konstruktiven memoria innerhalb der Villa Baviera verbunden.   abstract  = {The Himalayan arc stretches >2500 km from east to west at the southern edge of the Tibetan Plateau, representing one of the most important Cenozoic continent-continent collisional orogens. Internal deformation processes and climatic factors, which drive weathering, denudation, and transport, influence the growth and erosion of the orogen. During glacial times wet-based glaciers sculpted the mountain range and left overdeepend and U-shaped valleys, which were backfilled during interglacial times with paraglacial sediments over several cycles. These sediments partially still remain within the valleys because of insufficient evacuation capabilities into the foreland. Climatic processes overlay long-term tectonic processes responsible for uplift and exhumation caused by convergence. Possible processes accommodating convergence within the orogenic wedge along the main Himalayan faults, which divide the range into four major lithologic units, are debated. In this context, the identification of processes shaping the Earth's surface on short- and on long-term are crucial to understand the growth of the orogen and implications for landscape development in various sectors along the arc. This thesis focuses on both surface and tectonic processes that shape the landscape in the western Indian Himalaya since late Miocene. In my first study, I dated well-preserved glacially polished bedrock on high-elevated ridges and valley walls in the upper of the Chandra Valley the by means of 10Be terrestrial cosmogenic radionuclides (TCN). I used these ages and mapped glacial features to reconstruct the extent and timing of Pleistocene glaciation at the southern front of the Himalaya. I was able to reconstruct an extensive valley glacier of ~200 km length and >1000 m thickness. Deglaciation of the Chandra Valley glacier started subsequently to insolation increase on the Northern Hemisphere and thus responded to temperature increase. I showed that the timing this deglaciation onset was coeval with retreat of further midlatitude glaciers on the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. These comparisons also showed that the post-LGM deglaciation very rapid, occurred within a few thousand years, and was nearly finished prior to the B{\o}lling/Aller{\o}d interstadial. A second study (co-authorship) investigates how glacial advances and retreats in high mountain environments impact the landscape. By 10Be TCN dating and geomorphic mapping, we obtained maximal length and height of the Siachen Glacier within the Nubra Valley. Today the Shyok and Nubra confluence is backfilled with sedimentary deposits, which are attributed to the valley blocking of the Siachen Glacier 900 m above the present day river level. A glacial dam of the Siachen Glacier blocked the Shyok River and lead to the evolution of a more than 20 km long lake. Fluvial and lacustrine deposits in the valley document alternating draining and filling cycles of the lake dammed by the Siachen Glacier. In this study, we can show that glacial incision was outpacing fluvial incision. In the third study, which spans the million-year timescale, I focus on exhumation and erosion within the Chandra and Beas valleys. In this study the position and discussed possible reasons of rapidly exhuming rocks, several 100-km away from one of the main Himalayan faults (MFT) using Apatite Fission Track (AFT) thermochronometry. The newly gained AFT ages indicate rapid exhumation and confirm earlier studies in the Chandra Valley. I assume that the rapid exhumation is most likely related to uplift over subsurface structures. I tested this hypothesis by combining further low-temperature thermochronometers from areas east and west of my study area. By comparing two transects, each parallel to the Beas/Chandra Valley transect, I demonstrate similarities in the exhumation pattern to transects across the Sutlej region, and strong dissimilarities in the transect crossing the Dhauladar Range. I conclude that the belt of rapid exhumation terminates at the western end of the Kullu-Rampur window. Therewith, I corroborate earlier studies suggesting changes in exhumation behavior in the western Himalaya. Furthermore, I discussed several causes responsible for the pronounced change in exhumation patterns along strike: 1) the role of inherited pre-collisional features such as the Proterozoic sedimentary cover of the Indian basement, former ridges and geological structures, and 2) the variability of convergence rates along the Himalayan arc due to an increased oblique component towards the syntaxis. The combination of field observations (geological and geomorphological mapping) and methods to constrain short- and long-term processes (10Be, AFT) help to understand the role of the individual contributors to exhumation and erosion in the western Indian Himalaya. With the results of this thesis, I emphasize the importance of glacial and tectonic processes in shaping the landscape by driving exhumation and erosion in the studied areas.},

  abstract  = {Die Vielf{\"a}ltigkeit des Winkelbegriffs ist gleichermaßen spannend wie herausfordernd in Hinblick auf seine Zug{\"a}nge im Mathematikunterricht der Schule. Ausgehend von verschiedenen Vorstellungen zum Winkelbegriff wird in dieser Arbeit ein Lehrgang zur Vermittlung des Winkelbegriffs entwickelt und letztlich in konkrete Umsetzungen f{\"u}r den Schulunterricht {\"u}berf{\"u}hrt. Dabei erfolgt zun{\"a}chst eine stoffdidaktische Auseinandersetzung mit dem Winkelbegriff, die von einer informationstheoretischen Winkeldefinition begleitet wird. In dieser wird eine Definition f{\"u}r den Winkelbegriff unter der Fragestellung entwickelt, welche Informationen man {\"u}ber einen Winkel ben{\"o}tigt, um ihn beschreiben zu k{\"o}nnen. So k{\"o}nnen die in der fachdidaktischen Literatur auftretenden Winkelvorstellungen aus fachmathematischer Perspektive erneut abgeleitet und validiert werden. Parallel dazu wird ein Verfahren beschrieben, wie Winkel - auch unter dynamischen Aspekten - informationstechnisch verarbeitet werden k{\"o}nnen, so dass Schlussfolgerungen aus der informationstheoretischen Winkeldefinition beispielsweise in dynamischen Geometriesystemen zur Verf{\"u}gung stehen. Unter dem Gesichtspunkt, wie eine Abstraktion des Winkelbegriffs im Mathematikunterricht vonstatten gehen kann, werden die Grundvorstellungsidee sowie die Lehrstrategie des Aufsteigens vom Abstrakten zum Konkreten miteinander in Beziehung gesetzt. Aus der Verkn{\"u}pfung der beiden Theorien wird ein grunds{\"a}tzlicher Weg abgeleitet, wie im Rahmen der Lehrstrategie eine Ausgangsabstraktion zu einzelnen Winkelaspekten aufgebaut werden kann, was die Generierung von Grundvorstellungen zu den Bestandteilen des jeweiligen Winkelaspekts und zum Operieren mit diesen Begriffsbestandteilen erm{\"o}glichen soll. Hierf{\"u}r wird die Lehrstrategie angepasst, um insbesondere den {\"U}bergang von Winkelsituationen zu Winkelkontexten zu realisieren. Explizit f{\"u}r den Aspekt des Winkelfeldes werden, anhand der Untersuchung der Sichtfelder von Tieren, Lernhandlungen und Forderungen an ein Lernmodell beschrieben, die Sch{\"u}lerinnen und Sch{\"u}ler bei der Begriffsaneignung unterst{\"u}tzen. Die T{\"a}tigkeitstheorie, der die genannte Lehrstrategie zuzuordnen ist, zieht sich als roter Faden durch die weitere Arbeit, wenn nun theoriebasiert Designprinzipien generiert werden, die in die Entwicklung einer interaktiven Lernumgebung m{\"u}nden. Hierzu wird u. a. das Modell der Artifact-Centric Activity Theory genutzt, das das Beziehungsgef{\"u}ge aus Sch{\"u}lerinnen und Sch{\"u}lern, dem mathematischen Gegenstand und einer zu entwickelnden App als vermittelndes Medium beschreibt, wobei der Einsatz der App im Unterrichtskontext sowie deren regelgeleitete Entwicklung Bestandteil des Modells sind. Gem{\"a}ß dem Ansatz der Fachdidaktischen Entwicklungsforschung wird die Lernumgebung anschließend in mehreren Zyklen erprobt, evaluiert und {\"u}berarbeitet. Dabei wird ein qualitatives Setting angewandt, das sich der Semiotischen Vermittlung bedient und untersucht, inwiefern sich die Qualit{\"a}t der von den Sch{\"u}lerinnen und Sch{\"u}lern gezeigten Lernhandlungen durch die Designprinzipien und deren Umsetzung erkl{\"a}ren l{\"a}sst. Am Ende der Arbeit stehen eine finale Version der Designprinzipien und eine sich daraus ergebende Lernumgebung zur Einf{\"u}hrung des Winkelfeldbegriffs in der vierten Klassenstufe.},

  abstract  = {Die Universit{\"a}t Potsdam verlieh am 22. Juni 2017 an die t{\"u}rkische Politologin Hilal Alkan erstmals den „Voltaire-Preis f{\"u}r Toleranz und V{\"o}lkerverst{\"a}ndigung und Respekt vor Differenz". Mit dem Preis ehrt die Universit{\"a}t k{\"u}nftig einmal j{\"a}hrlich eine Person, die sich f{\"u}r die Freiheit von Forschung und Lehre sowie f{\"u}r das Recht auf freie Meinungs{\"a}ußerung eingesetzt hat. Voltaire wurde Namensgeber des Preises, weil er als Vordenker f{\"u}r den gesellschaftlichen Toleranz-Gedankens z{\"a}hlt. Sein Pl{\"a}doyer f{\"u}r Toleranz zwischen den Religionen, gegen Fanatismus und Aberglauben ist heute so aktuell wie lange nicht. Die Stadt Potsdam und ihre Universit{\"a}t sind mit Voltaire, der Aufkl{\"a}rungsepoche und dem Toleranzgedanken eng verbunden. In Potsdam lebt der Geist der Aufkl{\"a}rung und Toleranz, was im Leitbild der Stadt {\"o}ffentlich dokumentiert ist. Gelebt wird dieser Geist in Projekten wie dem „Neuen Potsdamer Toleranzedikt von 2008" oder dem B{\"u}ndnis „Potsdam bekennt Farbe", an dem die Universit{\"a}t Potsdam beteiligt ist. Auch Ehemalige der Universit{\"a}t engagieren sich f{\"u}r Frieden, Toleranz und Demokratieentwicklung. Da liegt es nahe das Thema zum inhaltlichen Schwerpunkt des Ihnen hier vorliegenden Magazins zu machen. Auf unseren Aufruf zur Mitwirkung meldeten sich rund 50 Ehemalige aus aller Welt, die von ihren Engagements berichteten. Eine Auswahl von 12 Berichten pr{\"a}sentieren wir in diesem Heft. Mit dabei ist etwa Geo{\"o}kologe Sylvio Mannel, der in einem amerikanischen Indianerreservat gearbeitet und die Lakota bei der R{\"u}ckbesinnung auf ihre stolze Tradition unterst{\"u}tzt hat. Oder Nicole Erfurth, die afghanischen M{\"a}dchen eine gute Schulbildung erm{\"o}glichen will. Oder aber Ralf Wunderlich, der als Profitrainer f{\"u}r Fußball nach Finnland auswanderte und nun mit Fl{\"u}chtlingen trainiert. In diesem Heft stellen wir auch aktuelle Projekte Ihrer Alma Mater zu diesem Themenkomplex vor und berichten dar{\"u}ber hinaus von den H{\"o}hepunkten des Jahres 2017.},

  abstract  = {Der Aufsatz erschließt die Anf{\"a}nge, Ergebnisse und Erfolge der editionsphilologischen Arbeit im laufenden Projekt des BBAW-Langzeitvorhabens „Alexander von Humboldt auf Reisen - Wissenschaft aus der Bewegung" und gibt einen {\"U}berblick {\"u}ber die Zuk{\"u}nfte philologischen Arbeitens mit den Methoden der Digital Humanities. Dabei werden auch bibliophile Druckausgaben digitaler Publikationen und die kontinuierliche {\"O}ffentlichkeitsarbeit der Figur Alexander von Humboldts in den Blick genommen, was durch zahlreiche Vernetzungen zwischen Institutionen international gef{\"o}rdert und durch kontinuierliche Kooperationen insbesondere durch das neu gegr{\"u}ndete Humboldt Center for Transdisciplinary Studies (HCTS) in China/Changsha erweitert wird. Diskutiert wird die wissenschaftliche Bedeutung der graphischen und visuellen Dimension des Humboldt'schen Archivs, die durch die digitale Aufbereitung des Materials Forscher:innen weltweit miteinander verbindet und neue Forschungskonzepte er{\"o}ffnet.},

L'Histoire des deux Indes de Guillaume-Thomas Raynal, qui connaissait tr{\`e}s bien l'œuvre de Pauw, reprends avec des formulations presque inchang{\´e}es le discours sur la signification {\´e}minente pour l'histoire du monde de la d{\´e}couverte de l'Am{\´e}rique. Il {\´e}largit de fa{\c{c}}on programmatique la perspective des Indes occidentales avec celle des Indes orientales et donne au commerce - comme cela figure d{\´e}j{\`a} dans le titre m{\^e}me de l'œuvre - une place importante et m{\^e}me d{\´e}cisive pour les bouleversements qui avaient transform{\´e} le monde de fa{\c{c}}on si fondamentale depuis la fin du XVe si{\`e}cle. Le discours sur les r{\´e}gions extra-europ{\´e}ennes et en particulier sur l'Am{\´e}rique avait au seuil du XIXe si{\`e}cle commenc{\´e} {\`a} se transformer de fa{\c{c}}on fondamentale avec la Voyage dans les R{\´e}gions {\´e}quinoxiales du Nouveau Continent, publi{\´e} entre 1805 et 1838 comme un gigantesque livre de voyage avec trente in-folio grand format par Alexander von Humboldt. Humboldt avait d{\´e}velopp{\´e} dans ce cadre depuis 1805 une quantit{\´e} incroyable d'{\´e}tudes les plus diverses qui en tant que science globalis{\´e}e et globalisante discutaient sans cesse ses propres r{\´e}sultats de recherche dans une perspective transdisciplinaire et comparative {\`a} un niveau mondial. Thus, both in his person and in his creative work he combined different cultural worlds in a polylogical way. (1) Two painters boasted that very same Inca descent - they were the last two great masters of the Cuzco school of painting, which over several generations of artists had been an institution of excellent renown and prestige, and whose economic downfall and artistic marginalization was vividly described by the French traveller Paul Mancoy in 1837.(2) While, during the 18th century, Cuzco school paintings were still much cherished and sought after, by the beginning of the following century the elite of Lima regarded them as behind the times and provincial, committed to an 'indigenous' painting style.   abstract  = {Khal Torabully creates poetry and a poetics for those forgotten by history, a theorem and theory which construct a tangible and sensual landscape, allowing for an empathetically shared experience and expressing the dramatic climax of the third phase of accelerated globalization: a project that would be unthinkable without the cultural theory we now have at our disposal in the present surge of globalization. In his poetic and theoretical texts, he has paid a literary tribute to the Coolies, usually from India, but also China and many other countries. Given Torabully's Mauritian roots, but also the worldwide migration of the Coolies themselves, the world of Coolitude is culturally and linguistically extremely diverse, making the act of translation very relevant and giving it multiple meanings. Literature brings these forgotten lives back to life and allows us to share this experience thanks to its aesthetic force. However, he did not express his criticism in public during the expedition but entrusted it only to good friends and his diary.   abstract  = {Zweifellos war Paris mit seinen renommierten wissenschaftlichen Institutionen, seinen Verlagen und wissenschaftlichen Zirkeln, aber auch mit seinen Salons als großes europ{\"a}isches Zentrum f{\"u}r Alexander von Humboldt der ideale Ort, um seine wissenschaftlichen Arbeiten voranzutreiben und jene sich beschleunigende Zirkulation von Wissen zu beobachten, die seine eigenen Arbeiten befl{\"u}gelte. Und dennoch war die Entwicklung seines Lebens-Werkes weniger mit einem bestimmten konkreten Ort als vielmehr mit einer Vektorizit{\"a}t verkn{\"u}pft. Diese tritt in allen Schriften Humboldts in den {\"U}berlagerungen der unterschiedlichsten Orte und Landschaften zutage. Quer zu den bis heute in ihren Dimensionen wie in ihren Ergebnissen erstaunlichen Reisen Humboldts zeigt sich eine oszillierende Bewegung, die {\"u}ber einen Zeitraum von nahezu sechs Jahrzehnten Berlin, Potsdam und Paris mit der ‚Neuen Welt' und den Debatten um letztere verband.},

  abstract  = {Since 1793, Alexander von Humboldt had been dreaming of realizing a travel to Russia, leading him right into Central Asia. In 1829, he finally was able to see his dream fulfilled, although the contexts and conditions of his travel to Russia were totally different from those of his voyage to the Americas, realized some thirty years earlier. Severely controlled by the Russian monarchy, the travellers made it up to the Chinese border, rapidly crossing, within very few months and with the help of more than 12000 horses, more than 18000 kilometers. This article analizes the outstanding importance of Humboldt's Asian project in the context of Humboldtian Science, specially focussing the relevance of TransArea studies within its omnipresent AsiAmerican dimensions. Therefore, Asie centrale occupies a highly specific place within the complex cosmos of Humboldt's writings, highlighting a fascinating transdisciplinary and geoecological approach still of great importance today.},

Los fil{\´o}sofos franceses Bruno Latour y Philippe Descola supieron destacar, aunque por caminos diferentes, la importancia de este nexo para asegurar la supervivencia del hombre; Bruno Latour centra sus reflexiones en la pol{\´i}tica de la naturaleza y Philippe Descola destaca el car{\´a}cter ecol{\´o}gico de la naturaleza y la cultura. Sin embargo, ambos dejan de lado las literaturas del mundo y su capacidad de atesorar los diversos dise{\~n}os del saber convivir entre hombre y naturaleza y las nociones de sustentabilidad. Descuella adem{\´a}s la inspiraci{\´o}n que Descola encuentra en la figura del gran erudito Alexander von Humboldt, quien en el siglo XIX ya daba fe de la relaci{\´o}n inextricable entre naturaleza y cultura en innumerables testimonios, entre otros, el Chimborazo que, como cuadro global es representativo para entender que la naturaleza desde siempre ha sido cultura y la cultura es inimaginble sin la naturaleza.},

  abstract  = {From June 14 to June 16, 2023, Hasso Plattner Institute, Potsdam, hosted the eighth European MOOC Stakeholder Summit (EMOOCs 2023). The pandemic is fortunately over. It has once again shown how important digital education is. How well-prepared a country was could be seen in our schools, universities, and companies. In different countries, the problems manifested themselves differently. The measures and approaches to solving the problems varied accordingly. Digital education, whether micro-credentials, MOOCs, blended learning formats, or other e-learning tools, received a major boost. EMOOCs 2023 focusses on the effects of this emergency situation. How has it affected the development and delivery of MOOCs and other e-learning offerings all over Europe? Which projects can serve as models for successful digital learning and teaching? Which roles can MOOCs and micro-credentials bear in the current business transformation? Is there a backlash to the routine we knew from pre-Corona times? Or have many things become firmly established in the meantime, e.g. remote work, hybrid conferences, etc.? Furthermore, EMOOCs 2023 has a closer look at the development and formalization of digital learning. Micro-credentials are just the starting point. Further steps in this direction would be complete online study programs or full online universities. Another main topic is the networking of learning offers and the standardization of formats and metadata. Examples of fruitful cooperations are the MOOChub, the European MOOC Consortium, and the Common Micro-Credential Framework. The learnings, derived from practical experience and research, are explored in EMOOCs 2023 in four tracks and additional workshops, covering various aspects of this field. In this publication, we present papers from the conference's Research \& Experience Track, the Business Track and the International Track.},

  abstract  = {Financing entrepreneurship spurs innovation and economic growth. Digital financial platforms that crowdfund equity for entrepreneurs have emerged globally, yet they remain poorly understood. We model equity crowdfunding in terms of the relationship between the number of investors and the amount of money raised per pitch. We examine heterogeneity in the average amount raised per pitch that is associated with differences across three countries and seven platforms. Using a novel dataset of successful fundraising on the most prominent platforms in the UK, Germany, and the USA, we find the underlying relationship between the number of investors and the amount of money raised for entrepreneurs is loglinear, with a coefficient less than one and concave to the origin. We identify significant variation in the average amount invested in each pitch across countries and platforms. Our findings have implications for market actors as well as regulators who set competitive frameworks.},

In den 50er Jahren noch fl{\"a}chendeckend beobachtet, wurden f{\"u}r das Jahr 2000 nur noch 18 Individuen durch Bestandserfassungen registriert. Die vielfach diskutierten R{\"u}ckgangsursachen beziehen sich vor Allem auf die großfl{\"a}chige {\"A}nderung der Landschaftsstrukturen, die zum Verlust der Lebensgrundlagen des Steinkauzes f{\"u}hrten. So haben u.a. der Verlust an Brut- und Vorratsh{\"o}hlen und an ganzj{\"a}hrig kurzgehaltenen Gr{\"u}nlandfl{\"a}chen, sowie der zunehmende Einfluss von Pr{\"a}datoren erheblich zum R{\"u}ckgang beigetragen. Eingeleitete Schutzmaßnahmen, ehrenamtlich oder auf dem allgemeinen Naturschutzprogramm des Freistaates Th{\"u}ringen beruhend, wie das Anbringen von Nisthilfen mit Marderschutz oder Pflegevertr{\"a}ge f{\"u}r Streuobstwiesen, zeigen bisher keine sichtbare Wirkung. Als weitergehende Maßnahmen stehen die Reduzierung von F{\"u}chsen (Vulpes vulpes) und Steinmardern (Martes foina), Ausbreitungskorridore f{\"u}r Steink{\"a}uze und ein Auswilderungsprogramm zur Diskussion. Angesichts des Populationsr{\"u}ckgangs des Steinkauz war es Aufgabe dieser Arbeit durch ein Simulationsmodell Untersuchungen zum {\"U}berleben einer Steinkauzpopulation (Athene noctua) in Th{\"u}ringen durchzuf{\"u}hren. Die zusammengetragenen Bestandszahlen ergaben geringe Individuenzahlen in den th{\"u}ringischen Landkreisen Altenburger Land, Greiz und der Stadt Gera sowie in den s{\"a}chsischen Landkreisen Chemnitzer Land und Mittweida. Die Bestandszahlen der Jahre 1989-2001, sowie weitere der Literatur entnommene Daten zum populations{\"o}kologischen Hintergrund, wie auch Analysen des Gebietes in Th{\"u}ringen und Sachsen und dessen besetzter Reviere der Jahre 1989- 2001, wurden in ein stochastisches, r{\"a}umlich-explizites, auf Individuen basierendes Simulationsmodell eingebracht. Es wurde eine Sensitivit{\"a}tsanalyse durchgef{\"u}hrt, die beruhend auf den erfassten Populationsentwicklungen in Th{\"u}ringen und Sachsen und auf Literaturangaben, ausgew{\"a}hlte Parameterkonstellationen f{\"u}r die Untersuchungenergab. Die Untersuchungen zum {\"U}berleben vor dem Hintergrund m{\"o}glicher Gef{\"a}hrdungsfaktoren und zur Ermittelung des Nutzens von Managementoptionen, wurden mit Schwerpunkten auf „Pr{\"a}dation", „Habitatverbesserung" und „Auswilderung" durchgef{\"u}hrt. Als Ergebnis der Simulationen kam heraus, dass die Pr{\"a}dation keinen großen Einfluss auf das {\"U}berleben der Population hat, und Schutzmaßnahmen die Chancen f{\"u}r das {\"U}berleben der Population nicht erh{\"o}hen w{\"u}rden. Habitatverbesserungen, die die Juvenilen animieren sich im Umkreis von bis zu 5 km vom elterlichen Revier anzusiedeln, w{\"u}rden aber deutlich zum {\"U}berleben der Population, auch in l{\"a}ngerfristiger Perspektive, beitragen. Habitatverbesserungen, die zu weiter entfernteren Ansiedlungen animieren, k{\"o}nnten sich dagegen ung{\"u}nstig auf das {\"U}berleben der Population auswirken. F{\"u}r eine m{\"o}gliche Auswilderung als Schutzmaßnahme ergab sich im Modell, dass eine Auswilderung von 5 Individuen pro Jahr {\"u}ber einen Zeitraum von 5 Jahren, die {\"U}berlebenswahrscheinlichkeit kurzfristig deutlich verbessern w{\"u}rde. Es ergab sich allerdings kein Unterschied, ob 5, 10 oder 15 Individuen ausgewildert werden.   abstract  = {Fire prone Mediterranean-type vegetation systems like those in the Mediterranean Basin and South-Western Australia are global hot spots for plant species diversity. To ensure management programs act to maintain these highly diverse plant communities, it is necessary to get a profound understanding of the crucial mechanisms of coexistence. In the current literature several mechanisms are discussed. The objective of my thesis is to systematically explore the importance of potential mechanisms for maintaining multi-species, fire prone vegetation by modelling. The model I developed is spatially-explicit, stochastic, rule- and individual-based. It is parameterised on data of population dynamics collected over 18 years in the Mediterranean-type shrublands of Eneabba, Western Australia. From 156 woody species of the area seven plant traits have been identified to be relevant for this study: regeneration mode, annual maximum seed production, seed size, maximum crown diameter, drought tolerance, dispersal mode and seed bank type. Trait sets are used for the definition of plant functional types (PFTs). The PFT dynamics are simulated annual by iterating life history processes. In the first part of my thesis I investigate the importance of trade-offs for the maintenance of high diversity in multi-species systems with 288 virtual PFTs. Simulation results show that the trade-off concept can be helpful to identify non-viable combinations of plant traits. However, the Shannon Diversity Index of modelled communities can be high despite of the presence of 'supertypes'. I conclude, that trade-offs between two traits are less important to explain multi-species coexistence and high diversity than it is predicted by more conceptual models. Several studies show, that seed immigration from the regional seed pool is essential for maintaining local species diversity. However, systematical studies on the seed rain composition to multi-species communities are missing. The results of the simulation experiments, as presented in part two of this thesis, show clearly, that without seed immigration the local species community found in Eneabba drifts towards a state with few coexisting PFTs. With increasing immigration rates the number of simulated coexisting PFTs and Shannon diversity quickly approaches values as also observed in the field. Including the regional seed input in the model is suited to explain more aggregated measures of the local plant community structure such as species richness and diversity. Hence, the seed rain composition should be implemented in future studies. In the third part of my thesis I test the sensitivity of Eneabba PFTs to four different climate change scenarios, considering their impact on both local and regional processes. The results show that climate change clearly has the potential to alter the number of dispersed seeds for most of the Eneabba PFTs and therefore the source of the 'immigrants' at the community level. A classification tree analysis shows that, in general, the response to climate change was PFT-specific. In the Eneabba sand plains sensitivity of a PFT to climate change depends on its specific trait combination and on the scenario of environmental change i.e. development of the amount of rainfall and the fire frequency. This result emphasizes that PFT-specific responses and regional process seed immigration should not be ignored in studies dealing with the impact of climate change on future species distribution. The results of the three chapters are finally analysed in a general discussion. The model is discussed and improvements and suggestions are made for future research. My work leads to the following conclusions: i) It is necessary to support modelling with empirical work to explain coexistence in species-rich plant communities. ii) The chosen modelling approach allows considering the complexity of coexistence and improves the understanding of coexistence mechanisms. iii) Field research based assumptions in terms of environmental conditions and plant life histories can relativise the importance of more hypothetic coexistence theories in species-rich systems. In consequence, trade-offs can play a lower role than predicted by conceptual models. iv) Seed immigration is a key process for local coexistence. Its alteration because of climate change should be considered for prognosis of coexistence. Field studies should be carried out to get data on seed rain composition.},

We also study Humboldt's conceptions of text and of history, highlighting the place of the indigenous in the composition of his reasoning. Die vorliegende Arbeit bezieht die Naturalien konsequent mit ein. Nur so ist eine Analyse der Dom{\"a}nenwirtschaft in ihrer Bedeutung f{\"u}r die Staatsfinanzen m{\"o}glich. Der Erkenntnisfortschritt liegt in der konsequenten Ber{\"u}cksichtigung der Naturalien durch Umrechnung in Geldwerte. Nicht zu leisten ist der Anteil der dom{\"a}nenwirtschaftlichen Ertr{\"a}ge am Gesamthaushalt des hessischen Territorialstaates, auch ist die Vermarktung der {\"U}bersch{\"u}sse der {\"A}mter quellenbedingt nicht zu ermitteln. Die {\"A}mterfinanzen zeigen einen Rahmen f{\"u}r dom{\"a}nenwirtschaftliche Staatsfinanzierung auf, dass bei Verzicht auf milit{\"a}rische Aktionen der fr{\"u}hmoderne Territorialstaat dom{\"a}nenwirtschaftlich zu finanzieren war. Die vorliegende Untersuchung kann aufzeigen, dass der dom{\"a}nenwirtschaftliche Rahmen f{\"u}r die Finanzierung eines Territorialstaates ausreichte, wenn er auf milit{\"a}rische Aktivit{\"a}ten und Abenteuer verzichtete. In dieser Studie werden erstmalig umfassende statistische Erhebungen der unteren staatlichen Ebene, das Landbuch und das {\"A}mterbuch ausgewertet, die bisher nur von Kersten Kr{\"u}ger ediert waren. Die vorliegende Arbeit ist in die Staatsfinanzierung auf der Stufe der Dom{\"a}nenwirtschaft einzuordnen. Landgraf Wilhelm IV. von Hessen-Kassel war einer der letzten, der es geschafft hatte, seinen Staat dom{\"a}nenwirtschaftlich mit den Einnahmen aus den Naturalien zu finanzieren. Als Dom{\"a}nenstaat wird ein Staat bezeichnet, der auf den ordentlichen Eink{\"u}nften aus Liegenschaften und Landbesitz beruht. Es wird in dieser Arbeit der dom{\"a}nenwirtschaftliche Rahmen f{\"u}r die Staatsfinanzen berechnet. Das bedeutet, dass die Zentralfinanzen nicht ber{\"u}cksichtigt sind. Es konnte gezeigt werden, dass, obwohl Landgraf Wilhelm IV. {\"u}ber ein kleineres Territorium als sein Vater, Landgraf Philipp der Großm{\"u}tige, verf{\"u}gte, die Gesamt{\"u}bersch{\"u}sse h{\"o}her waren. Das war seiner klugen Politik zu verdanken und seinen Bem{\"u}hungen, st{\"a}ndig die {\"A}mterfinanzen zu verbessern. Wilhelm IV. konsolidierte seinen Staat und konnte {\"u}ber dom{\"a}nenwirtschaftliche Einnahmen aus den {\"A}mtern seinen Staat finanzieren. Das gelang ihm, da er erstens seinen Staat ordentlich verwaltete und zweitens keine Kriege f{\"u}hrte. Landgraf Wilhelm IV. verabscheute den Krieg. Er sagte {\"u}ber den Krieg: „es ist kain abscheulicher ding auf erden als ein krieg".},

  abstract  = {Aldehyde oxidases (AOXs) (E.C. 1.2.3.1) are molybdoflavo-enzymes belonging to the xanthine oxidase (XO) family. AOXs in mammals contain one molybdenum cofactor (Moco), one flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD) and two [2Fe-2S] clusters, the presence of which is essential for the activity of the enzyme. Human aldehyde oxidase (hAOX1) is a cytosolic enzyme mainly expressed in the liver. hAOX1is involved in the metabolism of xenobiotics. It oxidizes aldehydes to their corresponding carboxylic acids and hydroxylates N-heterocyclic compounds. Since these functional groups are widely present in therapeutics, understanding the behaviour of hAOX1 has important implications in medicine. During the catalytic cycle of hAOX1, the substrate is oxidized at Moco and electrons are internally transferred to FAD via the FeS clusters. An electron acceptor juxtaposed to the FAD receives the electrons and re-oxidizes the enzyme for the next catalytic cycle. Molecular oxygen is the endogenous electron acceptor of hAOX1 and in doing so it is reduced and produces reactive oxygen species (ROS) including hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and superoxide (O2.-). The production of ROS has patho-physiological importance, as ROS can have a wide range of effects on cell components including the enzyme itself. In this thesis, we have shown that hAOX1 loses its activity over multiple cycles of catalysis due to endogenous ROS production and have identified a cysteine rich motif that protects hAOX1 from the ROS damaging effects. We have also shown that a sulfido ligand, which is bound at Moco and is essential for the catalytic activity of the enzyme, is vulnerable during turnover. The ROS produced during the course of the reaction are also able to remove this sulfido ligand from Moco. ROS, in addition, oxidize particular cysteine residues. The combined effects of ROS on the sulfido ligand and on specific cysteine residues in the enzyme result in its inactivation. Furthermore, we report that small reducing agents containing reactive sulfhydryl groups, in a selective manner, inactivate some of the mammalian AOXs by modifying the sulfido ligand at Moco. The mechanism of ROS production by hAOX1 is another scope that has been investigated as part of the work in this thesis. We have shown that the ratio of type of ROS, i.e. hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and superoxide (O2.-), produced by hAOX1 is determined by a particular position on a flexible loop that locates in close proximity of FAD. The size of the cavity at the ROS producing site, i.e. the N5 position of the FAD isoalloxazine ring, kinetically affects the amount of each type of ROS generated by hAOX1. Taken together, hAOX1 is an enzyme with emerging importance in pharmacological and medical studies, not only due to its involvement in drug metabolism, but also due to ROS production which has physiological and pathological implications.},

In the era of sustainability for renewable energy systems, semiconductor-based photoactive materials have received great attention not only based on solar and/or hydrocarbon fuels generation from solar energy, but also successful stimulation of photocatalytic reactions such as water splitting, pollutant degradation and organic molecule synthesisThe turning point had been reached for water splitting with an electrochemical cell consisting of TiO2-Pt electrode illuminated by UV light as energy source rather than an external voltage, that successfully pursued water photolysis by Fujishima and Honda in 1972. Ever since, there has been a great deal of interest in research of semiconductors (e.g. metal oxide, metal-free organic, noble-metal complex) exhibiting effective band gap for photochemical reactions. In the case of environmental friendliness, toxicity of metal-based semiconductors brings some restrictions in possible applications. Regarding this, very robust and 'earth-abundant' organic semiconductor, graphitic carbon nitride has been synthesized and successfully applied in photoinduced applications as novel photocatalyst. Properties such as suitable band gap, low charge carrier recombination and feasibility for scaling up, pave the way of advance combination with other catalysts to gather higher photoactivity based on compatible heterojunction. This dissertation aims to demonstrate a series of combinations between organic semiconductor g-CN and polymer materials that are forged through photochemistry, either in synthesis or in application. Fabrication and design processes as well as applications performed in accordance to the scope of thesis will be elucidated in detail. In addition to UV light, more attention is placed on visible light as energy source with a vision of more sustainability and better scalability in creation of novel materials and solar energy based applications.},

  abstract  = {The microscopic origin of ultrafast demagnetization, i.e. the quenching of the magnetization of a ferromagnetic metal on a sub-picosecond timescale after laser excitation, is still only incompletely understood, despite a large body of experimental and theoretical work performed since the discovery of the effect more than 15 years ago. Time- and element-resolved x-ray magnetic circular dichroism measurements can provide insight into the microscopic processes behind ultrafast demagnetization as well as its dependence on materials properties. Using the BESSY II Femtoslicing facility, a storage ring based source of 100 fs short soft x-ray pulses, ultrafast magnetization dynamics of ferromagnetic NiFe and GdTb alloys as well as a Au/Ni layered structure were investigated in laser pump - x-ray probe experiments. After laser excitation, the constituents of Ni50Fe50 and Ni80Fe20 exhibit distinctly different time constants of demagnetization, leading to decoupled dynamics, despite the strong exchange interaction that couples the Ni and Fe sublattices under equilibrium conditions. Furthermore, the time constants of demagnetization for Ni and Fe are different in Ni50Fe50 and Ni80Fe20, and also different from the values for the respective pure elements. These variations are explained by taking the magnetic moments of the Ni and Fe sublattices, which are changed from the pure element values due to alloying, as well as the strength of the intersublattice exchange interaction into account. GdTb exhibits demagnetization in two steps, typical for rare earths. The time constant of the second, slower magnetization decay was previously linked to the strength of spin-lattice coupling in pure Gd and Tb, with the stronger, direct spin-lattice coupling in Tb leading to a faster demagnetization. In GdTb, the demagnetization of Gd follows Tb on all timescales. This is due to the opening of an additional channel for the dissipation of spin angular momentum to the lattice, since Gd magnetic moments in the alloy are coupled via indirect exchange interaction to neighboring Tb magnetic moments, which are in turn strongly coupled to the lattice. Time-resolved measurements of the ultrafast demagnetization of a Ni layer buried under a Au cap layer, thick enough to absorb nearly all of the incident pump laser light, showed a somewhat slower but still sub-picosecond demagnetization of the buried Ni layer in Au/Ni compared to a Ni reference sample. Supported by simulations, I conclude that demagnetization can thus be induced by transport of hot electrons excited in the Au layer into the Ni layer, without the need for direct interaction between photons and spins.},

  abstract  = {The spider mite Tetranychus urticae Koch and the aphid Myzus persicae (Sulzer) both infest a number of economically significant crops, including tomato (Solanurn lycopersicum). Although used for decades to control pests, the impact of green lacewing larvae Chrysoperla carnea (Stephens) on plant biochemistry was not investigated. Here, we used profiling methods and targeted analyses to explore the impact of the predator and herbivore(s)-predator interactions on tomato biochemistry. Each pest and pest -predator combination induced a characteristic metabolite signature in the leaf and the fruit thus, the plant exhibited a systemic response. The treatments had a stronger impact on non-volatile metabolites including abscisic acid and amino acids in the leaves in comparison with the fruits. In contrast, the various biotic factors had a greater impact on the carotenoids in the fruits. We identified volatiles such as myrcene and alpha-terpinene which were induced by pest -predator interactions but not by single species, and we demonstrated the involvement of the phytohormone abscisic acid in tritrophic interactions for the first time. More importantly, C. carnea larvae alone impacted the plant metabolome, but the predator did not appear to elicit particular defense pathways on its own. Since the presence of both C. carnea larvae and pest individuals elicited volatiles which were shown to contribute to plant defense, C. carnea larvae could therefore contribute to the reduction of pest infestation, not only by its preying activity, but also by priming responses to generalist herbivores such as T urticae and M. persicae. On the other hand, the use of C. carnea larvae alone did not impact carotenoids thus, was not prejudicial to the fruit quality. The present piece of research highlights the specific impact of predator and tritrophic interactions with green lacewing larvae, spider mites, and aphids on different components of the tomato primary and secondary metabolism for the first time, and provides cues for further in-depth studies aiming to integrate entomological approaches and plant biochemistry.},

Among the available natural materials, wood is one of the key candidates, because of its excellent mechanical properties. However, wood and wood-based materials in engineering applications suffer from various restraints, such as dimensional instability upon humidity changes. Several wood modification treatments increase water repellence, but the insertion of hydrophobic polymers can result in a composite material which cannot be considered as renewable anymore. In this study, we report on the grafting of the fully biodegradable poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) inside the wood cell walls by Sn(Oct)2 catalysed ring-opening polymerization (ROP). The presence of polyester chains within the wood cell wall structure is monitored by confocal Raman imaging and spectroscopy as well as scanning electron microscopy. Physical tests reveal that the modified wood is more hydrophobic due to the bulking of the cell wall structure with the polyester chains, which results in a novel fully biodegradable wood material with improved dimensional stability.},

Polymerization of hydrophobic monomers in the cell wall is one of the potential approaches to improve the dimensional stability of wood. A major challenge is to insert hydrophobic monomers into the hydrophilic environment of the cell walls, without increasing the bulk density of the material due to lumen filling. Here, we report on an innovative and simple method to insert styrene monomers into tosylated cell walls (i.e. -OH groups from natural wood polymers are reacted with tosyl chloride) and carry out free radical polymerization under relatively mild conditions, generating low wood weight gains. In-depth SEM and confocal Raman microscopy analysis are applied to reveal the distribution of the polystyrene in the cell walls and the lumen. The embedding of polystyrene in wood results in reduced water uptake by the wood cell walls, a significant increase in dimensional stability, as well as slightly improved mechanical properties measured by nanoindentation.},

  abstract  = {Wood is used for many applications because of its excellent mechanical properties, relative abundance and as it is a renewable resource. However, its wider utilization as an engineering material is limited because it swells and shrinks upon moisture changes and is susceptible to degradation by microorganisms and/or insects. Chemical modifications of wood have been shown to improve dimensional stability, water repellence and/or durability, thus increasing potential service-life of wood materials. However current treatments are limited because it is difficult to introduce and fix such modifications deep inside the tissue and cell wall. Within the scope of this thesis, novel chemical modification methods of wood cell walls were developed to improve both dimensional stability and water repellence of wood material. These methods were partly inspired by the heartwood formation in living trees, a process, that for some species results in an insertion of hydrophobic chemical substances into the cell walls of already dead wood cells, In the first part of this thesis a chemistry to modify wood cell walls was used, which was inspired by the natural process of heartwood formation. Commercially available hydrophobic flavonoid molecules were effectively inserted in the cell walls of spruce, a softwood species with low natural durability, after a tosylation treatment to obtain "artificial heartwood". Flavonoid inserted cell walls show a reduced moisture absorption, resulting in better dimensional stability, water repellency and increased hardness. This approach was quite different compared to established modifications which mainly address hydroxyl groups of cell wall polymers with hydrophilic substances. In the second part of the work in-situ styrene polymerization inside the tosylated cell walls was studied. It is known that there is a weak adhesion between hydrophobic polymers and hydrophilic cell wall components. The hydrophobic styrene monomers were inserted into the tosylated wood cell walls for further polymerization to form polystyrene in the cell walls, which increased the dimensional stability of the bulk wood material and reduced water uptake of the cell walls considerably when compared to controls. In the third part of the work, grafting of another hydrophobic and also biodegradable polymer, poly(ɛ-caprolactone) in the wood cell walls by ring opening polymerization of ɛ-caprolactone was studied at mild temperatures. Results indicated that polycaprolactone attached into the cell walls, caused permanent swelling of the cell walls up to 5\%. Dimensional stability of the bulk wood material increased 40\% and water absorption reduced more than 35\%. A fully biodegradable and hydrophobized wood material was obtained with this method which reduces disposal problem of the modified wood materials and has improved properties to extend the material's service-life. Starting from a bio-inspired approach which showed great promise as an alternative to standard cell wall modifications we showed the possibility of inserting hydrophobic molecules in the cell walls and supported this fact with in-situ styrene and ɛ-caprolactone polymerization into the cell walls. It was shown in this thesis that despite the extensive knowledge and long history of using wood as a material there is still room for novel chemical modifications which could have a high impact on improving wood properties.},
