We show that the shape and position of the Raman signals of the host molecules (H2O) also contain useful additional information. In this study, Raman spectra (200-4000cm(-1)) of (mixed) gas hydrates with variable compositions and different structures are presented. The bands in the O-H stretching region (3000- 3800cm(-1)), the O-H bending region (1600-1700cm(-1)) and the O-O hydrogen bonded stretching region (100-400cm(-1)) are compared with the corresponding bands in Raman spectra of ice Ih and liquid water. The interpretation of the differences and similarities with respect to the crystal structure and possible interactions between guest and host molecules are presented. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. Using ion-exchange resin, we measured variation of N deposition and soil N availability within Elk Island National Park in the ecotone between grassland and boreal forest in western Canada. The park receives regionally high amounts of atmospheric N deposition (22 kg ha(-1) yr(- 1)). N deposition was on average higher ton clay-rich luvisols than on brunisols, and areas burned 1-15 years previously received more atmospheric N than unburned sites. We suggest that the effects of previous fires and soil type on deposition rate act through differences in canopy structure. The magnitude of these effects varied with the presence of ungulate grazers (bison, moose, elk) and vegetation type (forest, shrubland, grassland). Available soil N (ammonium and nitrate) was higher in burned than unburned sites in the absence of grazing, suggesting an effect of deposition. On grazed sites, differences between fire treatments were small, presumably because the removal of biomass by grazers reduced the effect of fire. Aspen invades native grassland in this region, and our results suggest that fire without grazing might reinforce the expansion of forest into grassland facilitated by N deposition}, language = {en} } @book{StedeChiarcosGrabskietal.2005, author = {Stede, Manfred and Chiarcos, Christian and Grabski, Michael and Lagerwerf, Luuk}, title = {Salience in discurse : multidisciplinary approaches to discourse 2005}, series = {Uitgaven Stichting Neerlandistiek VU}, volume = {49}, journal = {Uitgaven Stichting Neerlandistiek VU}, publisher = {Nodus-Publ; Stichting Neerlandistiek VU}, address = {M{\"u}nster; Amsterdam}, isbn = {3-89323-749-6}, pages = {153 S.}, year = {2005}, language = {en} } @article{FriedrichSchneidenbachSchnor2005, author = {Friedrich, Sven and Schneidenbach, Lars and Schnor, Bettina}, title = {SLIBNet : Server Load Balancing for InfiniBand Networks}, year = {2005}, abstract = {Today, InfiniBand is an evolving high speed interconnect technology to build high performance computing clusters, that achieve top 10 rankings in the current top 500 of the worldwide fastest supercomputers. This information is often not directly available, especially not for natural populations, but can be inferred by using molecular markers such as allozymes. Several methods based on inferred relatedness from marker data have been developed to estimate heritabilities and genetic correlations in natural populations. Most methods use maximum-likelihood procedures to assign pairs or groups of individuals to predefined discrete relatedness classes (e.g., half sibs and unrelated individuals). The Ritland method, on the other hand, uses method of moments estimators to estimate pairwise relatedness among individuals as continuous values. We tested both the Ritland method and a maximum-likelihood method by applying them to a greenhouse population consisting of seed families of the herb Mimulus guttatus and comparing the results to the ones from a frequently used standard method based on half-sib families. Estimates of genetic correlations were far from accurate, especially when we used the Ritland method. Specifically we show that a line of one-dimensional logistic maps that are unidirectionally coupled can be controlled from the first oscillator whereas a ring of diffusively coupled maps cannot be controlled for more than 5 maps. We show that rings with more elements can be controlled if every third map is controlled. The dependence of unidirectionally coupled maps on noise is studied. Because many active chemical or biological processes occur in a fluid environment with mixing, we investigate here the interplay among noise, excitability, mixing and external forcing in excitable media advected by a chaotic flow, in a two-dimensional FitzHugh-Nagumo model described by a set of reaction- advection-diffusion equations. In the absence of external forcing, noise may generate sustained coherent oscillations of the media in a range of noise intensities and stirring rates. We find that these noise-sustained oscillations can be synchronized by external periodic signals much smaller than the threshold. Analysis of the locking regions in the parameter space of the signal period, stirring rate and noise intensity reveals that the mechanism underlying the synchronization behaviour is a matching between the time scales of the forcing signal and the noise-sustained oscillations. The results demonstrate that, in the presence of a suitable level of noise, the stirred excitable media act as self-sustained oscillatory systems and become much easier to be entrained by weak external forcing. First, we work with original bone images, obtained by computed tomography (CT); second, we use structural measures of complexity to evaluate bone resorption and to compare it with the data provided by CT. This gives us the possibility to test algorithms of bone resorption by comparing their results with experimentally found dependencies of structural measures of complexity, as well as to show efficiency of the complexity measures in the analysis of bone models. For two-dimensional images we suggest two algorithms, a threshold algorithm and a virtual slicing algorithm. The threshold algorithm simulates bone resorption on a boundary between bone and marrow, representing an activity of osteoclasts. The virtual slicing algorithm uses a distribution of the bone material between several virtually created slices to achieve statistically correct results, when the bone-marrow transition is not clearly defined. Models of Population Viability Analysis (PVA) provide a powerful tool to assess the risk of species extinction. Organisms might adapt to new environmental situations and thereby mitigate negative effects of climate change. To demonstrate such mitigation effects, we use an existing PVA model describing a population of the tawny eagle (Aquila rapax) in the southern Kalahari. This model does not include behavioural adaptations. We develop a new model by assuming that the birds enlarge their average territory size to compensate for lower amounts of precipitation. Here, we found the predicted increase in risk of extinction due to climate change to be much lower than in the original model. However, this "buffering" of climate change by behavioural adaptation is not very effective in coping with increasing interannual variances. The biovolume-specific carbon content, relative egg volume (a measure of per-offspring reproductive investment), growth and grazing rates, and the gross growth efficiency (GGE) of the rotifer Cephalodella hoodi, isolated from an extremely acidic habitat (pH 2.65), were determined and compared with literature values for rotifers living in circum-neutral habitats in order to reveal potential special features or adaptations related to the extreme habitat of C. hoodi. 2. Of the two dominant phytoflagellates (Ochromonas sp. and Chlamydomonas acidophila) that occur in the natural habitat of C. hoodi, only C. acidophila promoted positive growth and reproduction and, thus, the following results were obtained with C. acidophila as a food alga. 3. The body volume-specific carbon content of C. hoodi is in the range of that found in rotifers from circum-neutral lakes, suggesting that no costly carbon investment, brought about by the thickening of the lorica, for example, was required to withstand low pH. 4. The egg volume of C. hoodi exhibited no phenotypic plasticity dependent on the food concentration and, thus, C. hoodi allocated a constant, absolute amount of energy to each individual offspring. No adaptation to low food densities was found. 5. A dome-shaped type II functional response curve was found to describe the ingestion of Chlamydomonas as a source of food. 6. Compared with other rotifers, C. hoodi had a high threshold and half-saturating food concentration (=low affinity) but also a high maximum growth rate and a relatively high GGE, suggesting no severe adverse effect of low pH}, language = {en} } @article{WeberZetscheRybergetal.2005, author = {Weber, Michael H. and Zetsche, F. and Ryberg, Trond and Schulze, A. and Spangenberg, Erik and Huenges, Ernst}, title = {Seismic detection limits of small, deep, man-made reflectors : a test at a geothermal site in northern Germany}, issn = {0037-1106}, year = {2005}, abstract = {A key question for the development of geothermal plants is the seismic detection and monitoring of fluid injections at several kilometers depth. The detection and monitoring limits are controlled by several parameters, for example, the strength of seismic sources, number of receivers, vertical stacking, and noise conditions. For a known reference reflector at 2.66 km depth at a geothermal site in northern Germany the results of a simple surface seismic experiment were therefore combined with numerical forward modeling for different injection scenarios at 3.8 km depth. The underlying idea is that changes of reflectivity from the injection at 3.8 km must be larger than the variance of the measurements to be observable. Assuming that the injection at 3.8 km depth would produce a subhorizontal disklike target with a fracture porosity of 2\% or 5\% (the critical porosity) the water injection volume has to be at least 443 and 115 m(3), respectively, to be detectable from the surface. If the injection on the other hand does not create subhorizontal but subvertical pathways or only reduces the seismic velocities via the increased pore pressure in the immediate vicinity of the bore hole, the injection is undetectable from the surface. The most promising approach is therefore to move sources and/or receivers closer to the target, that is, the use of borehole instrumentation}, language = {en} } @article{Weiss2005, author = {Weiss, G.}, title = {Alienation of the self and aesthetic existence}, issn = {0044-3247}, year = {2005}, language = {en} }
