Several issues posed by Humboldt's works include: establishing authoritative standard editions in several languages, creating high-resolution access to the many visual innovations in the works, and using software to restore the grand concept that all of the separate disciplines of study can be seen as interrelated parts of the whole. Dieser Zeitmesser ging, wie HUMBOLDT durch astronomische Vergleichsmessungen in Frankreich und Spanien auf der Anreise zum Einschiffungshafen La Corunna 1799 feststellte, außerordentlich genau. HUMBOLDTs L{\"a}ngenbestimmungen mit Hilfe dieses "time-keepers" auf der Atlantik-{\"U}berfahrt und sonstigen Seefahrten waren deshalb immer besser als die der Nautiker. Er konnte dadurch exakte Beschreibungen der Meeresstr{\"o}mungen machen und durch Vergleich mit der Schiffsversetzung durch diese konkrete Angaben zu deren Richtung und St{\"a}rke berechnen. Zudem brauchte er die BERTHOUD-Uhr f{\"u}r zahlreiche astronomische Ortsbestimmungen, geod{\"a}tische Messungen auf Land. Die Uhr geh{\"o}rte vorher dem bekannten franz{\"o}sischen Seefahrer, Mathematiker und Geod{\"a}ten Jean Louis BORDA (1733-1799), mit dem HUMBOLDT 1798 kurz vor dessen Tod in Paris wissenschaftlichen und instrumentenkundlichen Austausch pflegte. Aus zahlreichen Abschnitten der Reisebeschreibung und Hinweisen in Briefen und anderen Werken geht hervor, daß HUMBOLDT gerade an diesem Zeitmesser, neben Thermometer und Barometer sein drittes Basisinstrument, wegen der Vorgeschichte der Uhr, ihrer Zuverl{\"a}ssigkeit und N{\"u}tzlichkeit f{\"u}r alle seine wissenschaftlichen Arbeiten geradezu liebevoll gehangen hat.
