  abstract  = {In a letter dated August 6, 1797 to his friend Christian Gottfried K{\"o}rner, Friedrich Schiller characterized Alexander von Humboldt as a person of limited imagination, who, in spite of his numerous activities, would never be able to achieve greatness in his scientific pursuits. Yet, only in 1849 did Humboldt learn of Schiller's opinion from the published correspondence between Schiller and K{\"o}rner. Nonetheless, Humboldt declared that this basically unjust characterization of himself by Schiller would never prevent him from admiring the great German playwright and poet; moreover, Humboldt looked for comfort in a similarly harsh opinion of Johann Gottfried Herder also expressed by Schiller. In the end, Humboldt could barely conceal his feelings of disappointment regarding Schiller's opinion, especially because Humboldt had considered Schiller to be his friend.},

  abstract  = {La relaci{\´o}n de viaje de Alejandro de Humboldt sobre Am{\´e}rica desaf{\´i}a las definiciones gen{\´e}ricas: es un complejo h{\´i}brido de diversos discursos cient{\´i}ficos, documentaciones de datos emp{\´i}ricos, diario personal y formas tradicionales de la narrativa de viaje. La po{\´e}tica de Humboldt socava espec{\´i}ficamente el formato convencional de una relaci{\´o}n de viaje. Todos sus elementos centrales, aqu{\´e}llos que podr{\´i}an otorgar coherencia al texto, est{\´a}n cargados de m{\´u}ltiples significados que lo desestabilizan: (1) el sujeto (viajero, autor, narrador, firma, pronombres personales), (2) el objeto (los pa{\´i}ses que, supuestamente, la relaci{\´o}n de viaje debe tematizar, las formas variadas y contradictorias de la descripci{\´o}n y la denominaci{\´o}n en el texto), (3) el destinatario (tanto lo expl{\´i}citamente narrado como el lector impl{\´i}cito y la comunidad de interpretaci{\´o}n) y, finalmente, (4) el texto en s{\´i} mismo (como g{\´e}nero literario o fen{\´o}meno discursivo, su formato, su polifon{\´i}a, su autorreferencialidad y su autorreflexi{\´o}n). Un an{\´a}lisis narratol{\´o}gico y una lectura estructural del texto nos llevan a preguntarnos c{\´o}mo la po{\´e}tica de Humboldt refleja su aproximaci{\´o}n a la diferencia cultural. El modo espec{\´i}fico de la deconstrucci{\´o}n de la relaci{\´o}n de viaje que funciona aqu{\´i}, desautoriza las formas imperiales de la escritura colonial. No hay "identidades" ni "diferencias" que puedan ser definidas inequ{\´i}vocamente desde una perspectiva privilegiada.},
