  abstract  = {Als Alexander von Humboldt im Juni 1802 von Quito aus zum Rest seiner lateinamerikanischen Forschungsreise aufbrach, begleitete ihn, abgesehen von Aim{\´e} Bonpland, Carlos Mont{\´u}far bis nach Europa zur{\"u}ck begleitet, u.a. auch auf beim Versuch, den Chimborazo zu ersteigen. Bis kurz vor der Stadt Cajamarca im heutigen Peru schrieb Mont{\´u}far ein relativ unbekanntes Tagebuch zur Reise. Nach einem kurzen Ausflug in das Leben von Humboldts Begleiter steht im Zentrum der weiteren Ausf{\"u}hrungen die Frage, ob sein Tagebuch ein anderes Licht auf Humboldt und speziell auf den Aufstiegsversuch wirft. Das l{\"a}uft auf einen Vergleich der Tageb{\"u}cher der beiden Reisegef{\"a}hrten hinaus und auf den Versuch, die scheinbaren Widerspr{\"u}che aufzul{\"o}sen.},

Humboldt tuvo numerosos ayudantes indios que le prestaron servicios indispensables, entre otros, como porteadores, remeros, gu{\´i}as de monta{\~n}a e int{\´e}rpretes. S{\´o}lo conocemos a unos pocos de esos acompa{\~n}antes por sus nombres: uno de ellos es Carlos del Pino, que acompa{\~n}{\´o} al grupo de viajeros durante diecis{\´e}is meses. Los conocimientos ling{\"u}{\´i}sticos de Zerepe resultaron extremadamente {\´u}tiles a los exploradores durante la traves{\´i}a del Orinoco. Felipe Aldas comparti{\´o} con Humboldt los peligros de la ascensi{\´o}n a los Andes. Un indio o mulato le acompa{\~n}{\´o} incluso en su traves{\´i}a a Europa. Los indicios se{\~n}alan que se trataba de Jos{\´e} de la Cruz, mencionado varias veces en los diarios de viaje. Humboldt sab{\´i}a que ten{\´i}a que agradecer a sus compa{\~n}eros el feliz desenlace de su c{\´e}lebre viaje.},

Humboldt zahlreiche indianischer Helfer, die ihm als Tr{\"a}ger, Ruderer, Bergf{\"u}hrer, Dolmetscher u.a. unentbehrliche Dienste leisteten. Nur wenige dieser Begleiter sind uns namentlich bekannt: Einer von ihnen ist Carlos del Pino, der die Reisegesellschaft sechzehn Monate lang begleitete. Die Sprachkenntnisse von Zerepe waren den Forschern w{\"a}hrend der Orinocofahrt {\"u}beraus n{\"u}tzlich. Die Gefahren des Bergsteigens in den Anden teilte Philippe Aldas mit Humboldt. Ein Indianer oder Mulatte machte sogar die Seereise nach Europa mit. Indizien sprechen daf{\"u}r, dass dies der in den Reisejournalen mehrfach erw{\"a}hnte Jos{\´e} de la Cruz war. Humboldt wusste, dass er seinen Gef{\"a}hrten den gl{\"u}cklichen Ausgang der ber{\"u}hmten Reise mit zu verdanken hatte.},

  abstract  = {Whilst the notebook belongs to the imagery of the enlightened scientist's persona (an auxiliary tool kept by his side to be hastily scribbled with data, when at the bench or in the field), it has been given little attention by historians of science, who are used to consider its manuscript pages as a documentary resource to complement the printed text, but rarely take the notebook as a material and cultural object by itself, the history and epistemology of which is to be explored. Only recently have new trends in the historiography, by historians of printed books and reading practices, and by social and cultural historians of knowledge, called for a fresh look and opened the way for new approaches. Taking Alexander von Humboldt as a paramount example, who expressly devoted his life to "observing and recording" the world, pen in hand, this paper explores the note-taking practices at work in his travel diaries and notebooks from the perspective of the history of scientific observation and cognitive practices. Four themes are successively considered : the question of method and apprenticeship ; the timing of note-taking practices ; the nature and status of the data jotted down on the page ; finally, their uses in the production of scientific knowledge. In the back and forth movement between the observation of the world and the writing of science, the notebook stood as a crucial intellectual step and cognitive tool.},

  abstract  = {The difficult publication history and expensive editions of Alexander von Humboldt's volumes on the expedition to the Americas have resulted in incomplete library holdings which has limited scholarly access and sometimes caused unbalanced scholarship. A plan for a Humboldt Digital Library examines the structures and features of this representational system in print and proposes models for converting these materials to electronic form. Several issues posed by Humboldt's works include: establishing authoritative standard editions in several languages, creating high-resolution access to the many visual innovations in the works, and using software to restore the grand concept that all of the separate disciplines of study can be seen as interrelated parts of the whole. Using techniques of geographic visualization, a prototype is planned which will connect this historical body of knowledge with modern scientific databases.},

  abstract  = {During his American expedition Humboldt grappled intensively with the iniquities of colonialism. In the year 1803, for example, he noted "that the idea of a colony is itself an immoral idea, this idea of a land which is obliged to pay dues to another country." The colonial powers, wrote Humboldt, support intolerance, repression and slavery. However, he did not express his criticism in public during the expedition but entrusted it only to good friends and his diary. The lecture treats Humboldt's political stance during the expedition, based on human rights and his communicative role as a research traveller who, having returned to Europe, made his criticism public. Central to the lecture are examples of Humboldt's criticism of representatives of the colonial system. These make clear which important impulses the researcher gave to the independence movement and to the politicians of the young American states.},
